      If buying a corvette is a midlife crises car I'm dying in two years at 50. I bought my first C5 brand new at 25 in Y2K. I still have it and picked up and flipped two others along the way. The C5 and C6 (or any Corvette for that matter) are midlife crises cars if you wait until your 40's to buy one. Life's too short to buy and enjoy your sports cars when you're already putting on the back 9. If you're still waiting and debating stop. Pull the trigger and enjoy one as soon as you can..

      100% correct on the above. The center front air dam is exponentially more critical than the side pieces. Under normal and spirited road driving scenarios additional cooling for the brakes is not necessary. However, remove that center air dam and watch your engine temps skyrocket due to the missing deflector not feeding air to the bottom fed radiator..

    Hi Leo, I've measured my alternator output with a high accuracy voltmeter and see about 14.5V-14.7V at idle. My volt meter in the cluster reads exactly 1V higher; both the guage and the DIC reading. Any idea how to calibrate them? 14.5V is fine, so I don't worry that I have a charging system issue, but I would really like to have an accurate DIC and gauge reading especially since the car sits a lot.. I look at the volts every time I start the car and it drives me crazy that it's incorrect.
    BTW: thanks for this video. I agree with everything you point out. One more "don't do" tip: If your hood or trunk lid doesn't shut all the way when you close it or only latches on one side, DON"T push on it! Re-open it and try again. Fiberglass is flexible, but you don't want to stress or over flex it, and possibly crack it, or crack the paint. Also, yeah, rad supports are not meant for wheels which have to support a bunch of weight and or impact!

    • @midlifecrisis1979
      @midlifecrisis1979  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike, I have used so many different brands of volt meters on cars, motorcycles, boats, and houses. Each brand of volt meter tends to vary just a little. If a friend has a different volt meter brand, try it. You might be surprised. I have measured the same battery with a cheap meter and a medium priced meter. I got a bit of a different reading. I think this is the same situation. There is no recalibration you can do on stock gauges on your car without a special code reader/programming tool that mechanics might have. Not all mechanics would even have that tool because it is thousands of dollars. I think my buddy paid $20k for his, but he owned a shop back in the day.

      @@midlifecrisis1979 Thanks Leo. The voltmeter (multimeter) I use is handheld Fluke 77 which is accurate +/- .3% I guess I'm just going to have to live with it being wrong on this car. My C5 was dead-on and it looks like your car is closer to 14V too. It's odd that mine would be so far off.

    • @gotmylk
      @gotmylk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your car is a C5 or a C6 that sees the inside of your garage more than the street you need to use a trickle charger during its downtime. These cars have parasitic draws that deplete the battery when not on use. Trickle charging is the #1 best thing you can do for them to ensure you don't have sporadic charging issues at every next startup.

      My corvette was lower than stock due to the added weight of the supercharger. So I had to remove it, cut from 1 side of the car to the other side, but on the air apron. Then I put it back. The video talks about how you should not remove it permanently. It helps deflect air from under the car, up into the radiator for cooling.

    The short throw shifter mod seems like fixing something that is not broken on the C6. Yes, the C5 had a bit of a long throw, and you should have seen my 2000 Camaro. Total school bus shifting there. The Hurst shifter in the Camaro was a total game changer. Best engineered product I have ever seen. In the C5's we all went with just putting in a C6 shifter, GM product. All that said, I would stay away from it. It could void your warrantee, and like I said, the C6 shifter IS a short throw. Just like the exhaust IS a performance exhaust made out of the finest steel with flaps that open at the right times. People never learn, even changing the exhaust on the C8. More fixes for non-broken things. I do run a ZR-1 air filter in my C6Z, just because it's paper, cost the same so it's not really a mod. Bigger wheels and tires so the car is actually drivable. Oh, and a catch can, because why we are made to breath oil into our intakes, I will never understand. Thanks.

    What do you think about adding a K&N air filter?

    • @midlifecrisis1979
      @midlifecrisis1979  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that is a good idea. I would add the K&N cold air intake, not just filter replacements. That way you get the best air flow. I have an aftermarket supercharger so it already has the cold air intake as part of the kit.

    • @gotmylk
      @gotmylk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't waste your money on a K&N just for the sake of buying a K&N. A Wicks paper filter is a fraction of the price, doesn't require cleaning & oiling and will not hinder or improve performance exactly like the K&N. The caveat being the Wicks is disposable and over time will cost more if you keep your car long enough.

    • @midlifecrisis1979
      @midlifecrisis1979  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gotmylk I don't know the validity of that statement, but I do know that K&N claims performance increase with their cold air intakes. If they were lying, they would have been sued a long time ago. So I have to give it some validity. I personally have done cold air intakes on other vehicles. Cars, Trucks, and motorcycles when I owned a performance shop. I did notice a huge change. I did a cold air intake on a Suzuki M109R, along with an exhaust and power commander. I did a test ride and it almost tossed me off the motorcycle. I was accustomed to riding a Suzuki Hayabusa with nitrous, so I am not an inexperienced rider. I think K&N is a very reputable company and they do alot of research. Perhaps more research into their research will open your eyes to how they do benefit. At the end of the day, your car is your choice. So long as you are happy, be well.

      I am 5'9" and 296lbs. Getting in and out is not fun, but does get easier after a few times. Just remember when getting in: right foot, then butt, watch your head (duck), and then left foot. Once in the car, it is very comfortable. I am very comfortable, but with a winter jacket I feel weird. With a light jacket, hoodie, or just a shirt, I am comfortable. Give it a try once. I know getting into a convertible with the top down wouldn't be an issue for you. Just remember that you will have to drive reclined back a bit in order to see out the windshield due to the sloping angle and how tall you are. Targa top and hard top might be ok. Convertible top up sucks for even me getting in at only 5'9".

      I'm 6'3 275 lbs as well. With broad shoulders and wide back. I've owned 3 C5s and one since new in Y2k. The C5 and C6 have similar seat room.
      The C5 has a half inch more hip room (54.2" vs. 53.7") and only 1/10 of an inch more shoulder room (55.3" vs. 55.2"). The C6 has 3/10 of an inch more leg room at 43.1" vs. 42.7" vs. the C5.
      I fit just fine and have done many 6 hour road trips comfortably in the C5. At the track with my helmet on its not great with my helmet hitting the roof panel. But the lexon top vs. the body matched lined roof gives some extra wiggle room for the helmet. The C6 is slightly tighter for a big bodied person. But I fit just fine in them as well. I've not driven a C6 with a helmet on. So can't comment on that..

      @@midlifecrisis1979 alot of people have also gotten used to the lights on vehicles now that are way too bright amd actually blind people going the opposite direction too. So i guess it depends on the individual. For 2009 id say they are up to par with headlights that were in the 2015 range. Not the best. Not poor but very good for the year that they come from. My other vehicle is an 16 escalade with the diamond lights in the housing. Those light up the entire roadway in front of you. So coming from that to jumping in my first c6 i was actually impressed by how much light the corvette had for the age of the vehicle. My only thing i dont like about the c6 is the interior in some spots. I think they could have did more to the interior than they did. 90% of electrical gremlins in the C5 and C6 stem from corrossion on the ground connectors. Maintain your car, keep your grounds clean and use dialectic grease. Park your car in a garage or covered car port not outside to battle the elements and your C5 or C6 will remain tip top. Unless of course you bought the only ratted out one you could afford. If so clean grounds and maintain the car batter than the previous owners did.
