Just played a game with a few buddies vs. a hardest AI with Ivan's Slavtastic Adventure on the chokepoint meat-grinder deathfest referred to as "Black Forest." Due to our compulsive nature to build defenses and the AI's compulsive nature to carelessly send entire armies to be massacred by said defenses WW1 style, we were there for a while. By the end, my humble peasant farmers had amassed nearly 70,000 food overall. The Druzhina Halb/Boyardee armies I fielded where glorious and, fueled by chebureks and kvass provided by the gentle workers, squatted over the corpses of the blayts who dared to attack the dearest Motherland. Overall I give the Slavs a 5 outta 5, a slavstapeice.

I love how you can’t have too much knowledge of Age Of Empires 2. One of the greatest games of my life.
I just started playing AoE 2 a lot recently with my friends and I am really enjoying myself trying to find the perfect civ for me. I always find your videos entertaining and admire that you still are so passionate about all of your research in this game, and that a large amount of people still watch this stuff. I have been binge watching your civ guides, unit performance etc. and I've taken a lot of your advice to heart and felt that all of your videos have improved my game knowledge by a tenfold! Keep making these wonderful videos :)

Probably. Several people have studied Starcraft and written papers on it (mainly regarding Artificial Intelligence designed to play it). I know some people have made custom AIs for AoE2 as well, so there's some useful material you could study.
I'm a Starcraft AI developer (not at any formal level, but in my spare time), and I think that more RTS AI research can only be a good thing for everyone trying to find the best solutions to problems.
Nathan Gamble tbh that the hardest difficulty AI was just cheating instead of playing better was pretty lame. It would have been great if they changed that.

Hi Spirit Of The Law, I love your videos ^^ There is a thing that always confuse me about attack animation and actual hit by units. I saw that sometimes a spearman doesn't have to complete his attack animation before damage applies, and has to do like 2 attack animations before damage resets, while scouts has to complete the animation before applying damage. Could you explain it? Nice work anyway ^^
EDIT: I actually looked into the editor, some times the damage applies after 1 attack animation, while other times goes for 2-3 animations. My question is: is it based on the matchup? Like having a Scout hit a villager applies damage as soon as animation ends, while with spearman after being damaged needs more animations to apply the same damage. How do attack animations work? Firing rate is not always the same.
He already said something about it in a video, but i cant find it right now... it has nothing to do with the matchup, its just that the animation and the attack speed dont match each other. for example the animation for japanese infantry is the same as for other infantry, but their attack speed is different. The most obvious it gets when you watch rams, the moment when they actually do damage is basically never the moment it attacks in the animation. Thats only true for melee attacks, for ranged attacks the attack speed and animation are correct.
Arpy459y I know it was not addressed to me but based on your experience described and mine over the years the animation has nothing to do with the actual damage cycle (if I can call it like that, sry im not native speaker) maybe im wrong but I always had this feeling for example when I watch rams in duty, the damage happens completely off-sync compared to the animation :D

We need a mod that puts adidas stripes in the Castles and Town Centers, turns the farms into beets, the Mill into a vodka still and the villagers squat down to work, all while a Hardbass midi plays in the background.
For a game from 1999 it looks alot nicer than alot of newer potentialy higher buget games.

Might sound a bit dumb to ask this here, but do you get the Slavs when buying the African DLC or do they only come in the forgotten empires dlc? And do you get the balance updates for the base Game or only depending on which DLC you own?

They should just make it affect all parts of farming. 15% faster gather and 15% faster movement when moving around and dropping off.

As an agricultural people, they constantly sought an outlet for the population surplus. Suppressed for over a millennium by foreign rule of Scythians, Sarmatians and Goths, they had been restricted to a small territory; now the barriers were down and they poured out".[88] In addition to their growth, the depopulation of eastern Europe (due, in part, to Germanic migration) and the lack of imperial defences encouraged Slavic expansion.
The Slavs managed to keep up their agriculture (and a rather efficient kind of agriculture, by the standards of the time), even in times when they took their part in plundering Roman provinces. The booty they won apparently did not (at least initially) create a new military class with the greed for more and a contempt for peasant's work, as it did with the Germans. Thus the Slavic model proved an attractive alternative ... which proved practically indestructible. Could you do a video on how important is the Elite Upgrade for the Castle Units vs it's cost on units (maybe in a situation of an imminent battle) I know it sounds kinda silly but I'd like to know when it's better to invest in the upgrade (be it right away and keep your units or have an increased number of units and if it'd make a difference in both cases)

Age of Empires 3 isn't a bad game, I am playing through it again right now, actually. The reason it got such a bad rap was because it was such a departure from the traditional Age of Empires formula that it probably should have not been associated with Age of Empires name. If it hadn't, it wouldn't have gotten so much crap.

Slavs shouldnt have an effective extra wood cost on farms compared to other civs. They just use their farms faster, but they still get the same amount of food. Basically the other civs would have needed to sow extra farms to get the same food output, which offsets the slavs having to reseed theirs more often.
