    Those "elephants facts" blurbs were adorable. Though in the case of the monks, you could argue that the mahout (elephant tamer) is being converted.

    • @caracaes
      @caracaes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +128

      Actually, the "conversion" aspect of elephants in the game is quite representative of real elephants being used in battle. There are many reported cases of war elephants attacking the army they were supposed to help.
      One of the strategies used to counter elephants in real life was to force them to turn around so they would attack their own army. Mahouts often carried a chisel and a hammer to kill the elephant in case that happened.

    • @sauravtripathi4128
      @sauravtripathi4128 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Well, I totally agree with you. Probably, they could be made the only civilization with all 4 stable options (lacking Paladin and Imperial camel). As per the game (Prithviraj), we Indians did not have camels (for warfare, probably, but for trading). We had good horsemen and the best Elephants (the persians derive their elephants from India, written in history section). And Indians get the silly Elephant Archer, without Trample or Splash damage, and slower ROF than archers.
      Edit: no gunpowder also at that time. Maybe give the Imperial Camel to the Saracens, who lack the Cavaliers. The higher HP of Imperial Camel + Zeolatry is balanced by lack of basic armor.

    There is nothing more fun than managing to get about 10 really early Malay elephants out, and let your opponent watch in horror as they trample over their small defense force and proceed to flatten their town center. It is crazy how much damage they can dish AND take compared to knights of equal cost.

    Re; humans outrunning elephants:
    Humans are actually one of the few creatures capable of running their prey to death. Human legs are designed for energy efficient running, and humans' ability to sweat from almost everywhere on their body allows them to quickly dissipate heat. Humans aren't the fastest runners, but we can run for longer and farther than most other animals before needing to rest.
    Look up the Man versus Horse Marathon, the 22 mile/35 km race that pits runners against riders (it's in Wales). Those riding horses have won most of the time, but a few times the runner on foot has managed to win, and it's usually when the race happens on a hot day (dat heat dissipation yo). If the race were much longer, it's likely the humans would beat the horses more often.

    • @lucaswinsor4469
      @lucaswinsor4469 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Humans outrunning elephants? elephants charge faster than humans run, and if the elephant is trying to kill you, stamina becomes irrelevant because you're NOT going to stay ahead of it long enough for the elephant to gas out.

    • @aksuited4471
      @aksuited4471 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      An elephant chasing you is not going to end up in a marathon though. It would be a matter of a few minutes at most. Your only chance is to hide somewhere, because outrunning it is impossible for a human.

    I'm glad you talked about elephant facts. As someone who has spent quite a bit of time in Africa, it's frustrating how slow elephants are in AOE2. They are generally not aggressive, but they are territorial. I've been chased by elephants and if I was not in a vehicle I would be dead. They can run a LOT faster than humans.

      historically, elephants mostly weren't rode. At least not in ancient times. What you would do is have them go into panic mode and unleash them on the enemy army, hoping that they would trample the enemies to death. But they would kill many of your own soldiers in the process as well.

    Another elephant fact, during Vietnam at least one recorded event took place where a long range recon team was stalked by an elephant and then attacked, with one member being stomped on and requiring helicopter med evac (he lived, and other recon teams reported being stalked by curious elephants but this is the only incident I can find as a researcher where an elephant was out for blood, which sometimes we had to kill elephants from the air if they were carrying enemy equipment, so maybe that spread about the community and that one was taking revenge)

    Great video as always. From this video it seems like battle elephants are pretty useful in a lot of situations. I wonder why though, in the recent AoE2 HD tournaments with expert players, why battle elephants were hardly used at all. Daut went for them in a couple of games in the first tournament but ended up losing and then they weren't used at all after that, if I recall correctly.
    It's easy to think of them as a slower but stronger version of the knight line. After all, they are created at the stable and have the same two counters: pikes/halbs and monks. But because of their slow speed, they are countered much harder. For example, monks can be great against knights, but you have to be alert and have the numbers because the knights run in quickly and shred the monks once they get close.Battle elephants are so slow that the monks can convert one elephant and then get away, ready to recover their faith and convert again. Against halbs, knights do badly. But they are easier to keep alive because they can run around and avoid bad engagements. If your army of elephants runs into an army of halbs, they are dead. They can't escape and will be very costly to replenish. Even if the elephants win against the halbs, you will have spent gold to kill trash, giving your enemy an advantage.
    Perhaps it's better to think of the battle elephants as a kind of siege unit rather than an alternative to knights. Maybe they could work mixed in with archers to soak up arrow fire and put pressure on walls and castles.

  • @Corcky54
    @Corcky54 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Spirit! It's not the elephant being converted. It's the RIDER, silly!
    Honestly though, keep up the good work. I love your videos and I hope people that have never heard of AoE before (I feel bad for those poor souls) get converted into the WOOWOOWOO religion by your videos :)

    There's a certain mod on the Workshop that also grants Battle Elephants to the Ethiopians, Indians and Persians that's absolutely wonderful.

    • @jondeoliveira8248
      @jondeoliveira8248 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      AGT88 I don't see the point of giving them to Persians, since Persians rarely used them and have a superior version anyway, but giving them to Indians and Ethiopians is a good idea.

  • @nemosgaze

    • @mmaa-wc2bx

      Game's balance is more important than historical accuracy, I'm afraid, but we can still be glad that those two civs do get elephants in their armies.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      why Persian need battle elephant when they already have war elephant? Indian get access to battles elephant is nice idea tho, make up for their shitty elephant archer and enrich their stable 🐘

      @davidvondoom2853 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'd gladly swap Imperial Camels for Battle Elephants, for the Indians. It fits better.

    • @Chenla
      @Chenla 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Giving Persians or Indians the Battle Elephants, would be off charts.
      The Persians are too strong already, with their unique tech their Battle Elephants would be the fastest in the game, no need for Knight line to take out siege then.
      About Indians, as proven in the tournaments, they have already strong eco with big savings on food (villagers cost less), giving them Battle Elephants would make them even stronger against non-monk civs.
      Sure for for historical they should have them, but here we talk about the game balance.
      I could say right now, why some African civs dont have Elephants, when they are literally in Africa XD.
      Also ppl dont like when original civs are changed too mush and Persians are part of the original civ pool.

    • @Chenla
      @Chenla 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indians have already Imperial Camels, good Archers and Hand Cannoneers with +1 range.
      Giving them additional meat in the front as the Battle Elephant could mean very strong combo.

    Is anyone else bothered by how the Battle Elephant and War Elephant model doesn't seem to be scaled properly compared to each other? War Elephant seems like it should be a bit bigger but actually looks smaller. Really obvious when they are side by side at 1:00.

    another fun fact, which is totally not reflected in the game, is that elephants cry whenever they pass near a person's grave. They really remember everything. And that's why it's so sad to know that they have been hunted for centuries. Such noble animals

    I think one of the main advantages of Battle Elephants over the War Elephants is that they are produced at the stable, which makes them much easier to mass. Plus I don't think they do that bad population space wise, because it takes so many vills to keep up the food production to make War Elephants

  • @darkdill

    Shouldn't you have mentioned how well Vietnamese Elephants do against Pikes/Halbs? I think that 30 extra HP allows them to survive 1 more attack from a Halb.

    How do throwing axemen do against battle elephants? They do melee damage from a short range so might be able to minimise trample damage, but they don't have the anti-cavalry bonus damage that mamelukes do.
