    After years of using a different brand chainsaw exclusively, I was taken aback at how different the Husqvarna was. One of the better tutorials I've seen; concise, thorough, and linear. Thank you.

    The video was a good reminder since I was out of country for a few years and my chainsaw was in storage for all of the time away. Both mine needed a good cleaning and that was a chore as well.

    This is a great tutorial on how to change the chain. One thing I did incorrectly that was not mentioned, is set the chain clutch to open before pulling the side cover off. Be sure the clutch is open and the chain moves freely, otherwise, that side cover is a pain to remove. If it requires any real effort to pull it off, then the clutch is closed and you need to push the lever forward to release the clutch.
    I also appreciate the info on lubing the bar sprocket, I would have easily overlooked this. Great job!

      I made this error too and now I'm not able to put it back together :/
      edit: Just when I wrote this I got it back together. Just needed to use some force to get "clutch lock" open again :)

      Nathan Hladky Thank You, I made the fatal error of not releasing the clutch and had to take it in to put my cover back on! Good Video but he should re-make adding in the clutch.

      How do you make a tutorial without mentioning this most important action item?

    For those that have the cover off without releasing the chain brake as this vid so famously missed, here's a simple fix:
    Remove the brake lever (2 allen screws). Then use the removed lever to release (pull back) the brake band. Then Reassemble. Your welcome!

      Thanks for help and for watching. That's why I say this is how "I fixed" whatever it is...It might not be how you wanna fix it😂, but I'm pretty close the majority of the time.

    Thanks for the video. I had to do my first chain replacement, and it was nice to see it happen before I tried it. Yours sure fell into place a lot easier than mind did, but with a little persuasion, I got the job done. How did people learn how to do this stuff before youtube? Maybe back then they printed manuals using a font larger than 0.05 points, and it wasn't so much work sifting through the endless warnings and cautions to get to the actual instructions.

    U forgot the most important step: make sure the chain brake is dis-engaged before you remove the clutch/brake cover. Otherwise, it's off to the shop for fixing (for many). Dis-engage the chain brake, if engaged, by pulling it back towards the grip handle. Then remove the cover nut.

      Exactly. I made this mistake the first time. A helpful hint though, if you find yourself in the same situation, just put the cover back in place and press hard on the top right corner (where the chain-brake switch is located. I was able to press it back in far enough to disengage the brake and save myself some serious headaches.

    Dr. Shankopotamus, thanks for this video! This helped me as I was trying to change and clean my chain this morning. This might seem like a silly question since I use my husqvarna 450 quite a bit, but what is the best oil/gas mixture do you use?

    • @dkhill27
      @dkhill27 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Best I use is 50:1 premium non ethanol gas and Husqvarna synthetic 2 stroke mix.

    • @DrShankopotamus
      @DrShankopotamus  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually use the Husqvarna oil. It's 50:1 mixture. Always use Ethanol free gas... If you can get it. 2.5 fl oz of 2-stroke oil to 1 gal gas.

    I'm a chainsaw rookie, so was not aware of that last step of putting in grease at that small hole at the end of the bar (and on both sides of the bar). I just looked at that on my Husqvarna and the hole is very small. Doesn't look like it could hold much grease. What exactly is that grease lubricating?

    have you had trouble with the bar getting enough oil? mine (also a 450) is TERRIBLE. the bar turned blue/black from lack of oil. it goes through the usual 1/2 tank of oil per tank of fuel. had probably 35 tanks of fuel through it. what do I do? I know the oilers are not adjustable. I like the video

    • @DrShankopotamus
      @DrShankopotamus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never had the oil problem with mine. Are you lubing the holes for the gears on the end of the bar? If not you could be creating more resistance and more heat causing the bluing. Also, if you chain is too tight you can get the same heat/bluing problem? Thanks for the support.

      Check the bar length. The specs for the bar are stamped on the side. On the Husqvarna bar its near the slit on the end of the bar attached to the motor.

    God willing Doc you'll see this comment today I am at my wits end trying and failing after 8 hours now to get chain and bar onto my 450 which is this || close to being thrown in pond in disgust. Sooooo frustrated.
    When j get chain and bar on the chain **will not** rotate the like at all even with proper slack. There is a little white grommet that fell out and I don't know which orientation or aide of bar it goes on. The bar is 100% straight but when installed the back of back "channels" for chain grippers are nowhere close to in love with the chain drive gears s chain will not feed into bar and this chain will not rotate. It's the ^
