How to Fix a Stuck Chainsaw Brake

  • Step by Step!
Today we'll be looking at a chainsaw that has a stuck chain brake.
The reason they usually get seized up is because the spring track gets filled with sawdust.
It's usually a quick fix, and you can complete this using basic tools!
I'll 1st explain the fundamentals of how the brake system works, and then show you how it gets seized in the 1st place.
We'll then clean and lubricate it, so it doesn't seize again.
Once chain brake has been cleaned and the spring track has been lubricated, I'll show you how to reset the chain brake spring. We'll then reinstall it onto the chainsaw.
I'll then show you how to properly adjust the tension of the chain, so we can start up the chainsaw and engage and disengage the chain brake!
Simply follow the steps in this video, and your chainsaw will be back up and running in no time!

Mr. Eliminator, you saved my day. My brake seized cutting a large tree for firewood. My saw is not a Husqua Varna, but it was identical brake system. Carb aerosol cleaner worked great on cleaning the gunk and when cleaned I used small amount of Liquid Wrench aerosol. The 9/16 wrench and screwdriver snapped the seized brake open. Thanks again. - Bob in Arkansas Woods.

I agree with other people who have posted: this was an excellent demonstration and explanation of the chain brake, how to maintain it and how to fix multiple variables to why it might not work properly. Great addition if repair with caution being explained. Great video- just what we needed to hear; no extra chatter (Ha!). Thank you so much.

Thank you for an informative and well presented video on the workings of a chain saw brake. I had a couple of problems trying to get a new saw chain on my Echo CS400. After watching your video I ran up to my garage and followed the steps you presented. Yesterday I was in tears. Today I'm all smiles looking forward to cutting more firewood. Thanks again. Well done! 👏

I was trying to put my cap on for an hour. I knew that the inner lock was to small to fit over the clutch but didn't know how to expand it. As soon as I seen you turn that 3 pronged dial with the 9/16 wrench and screw driver I knew that's what I needed to do. I did that and my cap fit right back on just like it should. Thanks a million..... It's great that you took the time to show others how to fix this problem. Thanks again.............

I have a Poulan 5020V saw. A few years ago something happened, the brake spring triggered, and I couldn't put the cover back.
I didn't understand how the brake worked and so I removed the brake assembly and used the saw that way. I know.... not very smart move.
Anyway, since I saved the parts, I thought I'd give it a shot to fix it today.
Your video, as so many have commented, was perfect! The trick to use the 9/16ths open-end/ closed-end wrench worked perfectly.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences!

And then waisted hours trying feebly to get it back on, all the while I could have walked 50 yards back to my camp and watched your video!!!! Now I’ll try to get the spring back in place after it went shooting into the woods , waistline more time 😖😖😖 Thanx and subscribed!

Trapped two bars with new chains in a tree. Thought they were pinched but I removed the saw (455 Rancher) and saw the brake ring compressed… so stuck on. I’m going to clean it all up and reattach to the bar still in the tree (mid plunge cut) to see if I can get it turning and get the bar and chain out! Thanks for the vid… will let you know how it goes!

Thanks!

AWWWW, I spent two hours trying to get the cover back on the saw and I failed. After I watched your video and it showed me about locking the spring back on the brake. it all made sense. Should have watched before starting . I expect successful reassembly. who would have known that I have to reset the spring to release tension on the brake spring. . Oh well lesson learned.
