I use a small dremmel, as that does exactly the same job, although the onboard rechargeable battery pack, is of extremly low quality, lossing it's charge (mostly) before the chain is even sharp, meaning a recharge is needed halfway through. I discovered that fault, when away out on a farmer's paddock, just after I had bought it, and charged it before driving away from the house power. Not thinking, I didn't take another chain with me, assuming the new chainsaw dremmel, would suffice (but at least I still had an old handfile, that I used to finish the sharpening. Now, I only use it to do odd-job grindings (mainly of plastic components) when around the house, or in the workshop - well away from any chain.
Arborist here - with a good simple round file (we use Stihl ones) you should be able to do a chain in five minutes with practice and you should also be able to get it to cut better than brand new. The ideal raker depth depends what timber you're cutting and also how powerful your saw is, so I don't recommend any sharpening system that sets the raker depth automatically. Just use a plain flat file and then use a raker gauge to check how high the raker is - most of the time you won't need to adjust them, they don't need to be the perfect depth just reasonably close. Also, get yourself a saw with much shorter bar than the one in your video. Short bar means less teeth to sharpen, a lighter saw for easier/safer operation, less friction on the bar (effectively more cutting power) and for 99% of cuts the shortest bar you can get will be plenty long enough. Leave the big saw in the shed unless you actually need one. We have about a dozen saws - and everyone's favourite by far is the Stihl MSA 300 with a 16" bar. We take three of them to every job. The only other saw we use regularly is a tiny climbing saw and a pole saw.
Have owned the Stihl sharpener for years. It’s fantastic. The fact that it files down the raker is a game changer. You can sharpen the chain many times before needing to replace.
After years of sharpening chains with round files, I figured out the secret is lifting the file upward against the cutting edge as you stroke. Thanks for the videos.
im down here about to leave a comment saying exactly this. i worked for an arborist and learned the same thing EDIT: the tool i used had a square file that also calibrated the depth gauge, and was attached to the handle, allowing me to do both jobs at once
I love your videos, i just want to say as a chainsaw enthusiast i use the Stihl sharpener and if you put the bar in a bench vise that is mounted at a comfortable work height and position you can get an extremely precise hold and push on the sharpener a shrarpen sharper than new is possible. keep making the great videos thank you we love them.

@@ProjectFarm Can you do a test on woodworking bar clamps? I use Bessey but they're expensive. Tried some cheaper ones but the 'teeth' on the bar wore out & failed to grip in no time.

That sliding Stihl sharpener is spectacular. I spent several days non-stop cutting with an MS360 saw removing a couple of enormous trees and that thing was a life saver. After some practice, it only takes a few minutes to put a new edge on the entire chain. If you do it every time you fill the saw with gas it really keeps things moving. It was $40 when I bought it on Amazon, but it was worth every penny.
That's the one that caught my eye, as well. The dual action, the simplicity and the solid compact form, easily make up for it not producing the absolute sharpest results.
Agree. Easy, portable, no batteries or plug in and sharpens really well. Only down side is listening to knuckle draggers go on and on and ON about how they can do it freehand and you'd be laughed outta the woods using it and you've gotta hand in your 'man card'......🙄🥱
I have the Pferd with the blue handles. It's about $9 less than the Stihl. Husqvarna sells something similar that os only $34. Then there are the Chinese Pferd knockoffs for about $23 I think. Not saying these all need to be tested but......

?? It's fast and easy to file a saw, you don't even need to take the chain off the bar and you get scary sharp results and smooth and fast cutting. Just learn to hold a file in your hand. =)
when you put a new chain on, just do "maintenance" files with the stihl file every tank or two of gas. just real quick 1-2 swipes on each cutter. takes 3minutes and it stays sharp all day.
I have been using the Timberline system for the past 6 years. I am 64 years old and run seven saws. I can do my 20" Rancher under 15 min. My chains last 3 times longer and tooth consistency is second to none. I have found using a 3/16 cutter on a 7/32 chain improves cutting performance. The Timberline cutters are Tungsten steel and will do 50 plus sharpenings. Best money I have ever spent. Sharpenings can be done in the woods, tailgate or benchtop.
I also use the Timberline system, and have found it to produce the best results of any sharpener I have tried. I also like the Stihl, but dislike having to put my saws in a vice to use it accurately. The Timberline can be used anywhere, and once you are used to it, the time to sharpen is greatly reduced.

I cut about six cord of wood per year. For the last two years I have used the EZZDOO. I free hand without the guide. Great results. Very happy. Tip: When you order the EZZDOO also order three or four boxes of stones the right size for your particular chain. The EZZDOO only comes with three stones, one each, three different sizes. You will need spare stones in your size. Great video.
I would be interested in a comparison between wire splice methods, especially for automotive use. There are a lot of opinions on the internet about soldering. crimp connectors, solder and heat shrink, special heat-shrink that contains solder (genuine TE and knock-off) etc. My personal favorite is soldering manually and then using the solder sleeves, which nobody else seems to do, but I use soldering and generic heat-shrink as well. Strength, weather resistance and vibration resistance are the most important tests I guess, but size of the splice and ease of use (especially in tight spaces) are also relevant. Maybe a little bit outside of your usual themes but I think you are the right person to nail this once and for all.
I worked professionally with car audio, remote starts, and GPS installs before switching careers (IT now). You won't believe it, but myself and the majority of colleagues over the year just twist and tape wires together, even data wires. You can call it "military splice" for pictures online, but I generally fray the ends in two directions, twist them together, then wrap them around the wires backwards each side. If it's one loose wire connecting to an existing wire, strip away the plastic and poke a hole and kinda do the same thing twisting it each side and taping the wire to the existing one. Tape it tight and if you did it right you can't even pull them apart no matter how hard you pull. I have done my entire Jeep Wrangler build like this starting a decade ago and the amount of heavy off-roading and movement not a single wire has came loose or apart, inside the cab or under the hood. Most professionals agree on absolutely not anything T-Tap style, that stuff will eventually fail on you. Anything else you mentioned works fine if done correctly though.
It's worth noting that no OEM harness in any modern vehicle has any soldered joints. Ideal solution is to get the appropriate crimp terminals and replace the entire wire, but we all know that's simply not feasible when adding accessories or making inline repairs. Your idea for a comparison video is a good one.
Stihl sharpener is supposed to by PUSHED only, not pushed and pulled (as you appear to be doing at the 11:00 mark). I own 4 different sizes and it's all I use. Takes care of sharpening and adjusting the depth at the same time. Excellent tool.

He’s not cutting while pulling. Maybe turn the volume up on your device. There is little to no sound when he comes back to him meaning he is not actually grinding anything but just getting the sharpener back to him to PUSH forward for sharpening.
He actually has a test on the effect of dragging a file the wrong way. I'll save you half an hour, it really doesn't matter. Regardless if you listen he's barely dragging while he uses it. It'll be fine
Some guys I was clearing trails with showed me the Stihl sharpener a few years ago. They let me try it. I purchased one the next weekend, and I have been using it ever since. I can sharpen the chain on my 180C in less than 5 minutes and everyone who I show it to wants one. Love your anything to do with chain saw reviews!!!!!!!!
I help run a tree trimming service and we use the stihl sharpener that knocks down the rakers at the same time. Great sharpener that does it all with correct angle markings on it so you know you're sharpening it right. Great video as always
When I purchased my Stihl chainsaw a few years ago I also purchased the manual sharpener. I was impressed with how well it worked. I have manually sharpened my chainsaw for decades. I tried the adapter to my dremel tool several years ago, but felt it didn’t make a long lasting edge. I now use the Stihl sharpener on all of my saws. Love it and have recommended it to several people.
Normally I would just buy a new chain for my chainsaw, but just as you said, the prices have gone way up so it pays to sharpen them. Thank you for another fantastic testing video!
Have used a Stihl sharpener for years. Easy to use in the paddock. Spent a couple of years cutting decades-dried Australian hardwood on an outback property. Brutal on chains but the Stihl did a brilliant job rejuvenating them.
My family has cut all kinds of wood in all kinds of situations for decades, and we all use stihl. Dad's saws are over 30 years old and still work awesome. Good ol pmcs and these have always lasted and just plain work. We always have used plain ol files. Might switch to the fancy stihl sharpener lol. Awesome review as always.
I managed a company back in the 90s that made all of the abrasive points for Granberg. Their quality requirements were rigid and our product was quality checked upon receipt. One of the best customers/companies I have worked with. I left manufacturing in the early 2000s I saw the Granberg test and expected them to finish first or second. They did not disappoint me.

It gets better pretty quick. If you were dealing with tooth pain before you got them like I was, you’ll be so thankful in a couple weeks when you’re all healed up. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was getting mine. I had tooth pain for decades but ever since I got them I’ve had no pain, and unlike the image that some people think when they hear someone has dentures, I can eat absolutely anything I want with no issues or pain. I can bite an apple or eat a steak no problem. The only thing I don’t like to deal with is gum or gummy candy cause it gets under the dentures and I have to take em out and clean em or it’ll annoy me feeling the candy stuck in there, but I can eat it if I want to and I still do sometimes. I had a couple weeks of discomfort when I got them and I lost a couple pounds from not being able to eat as much, but most of us can afford to lose a couple pounds anyway lol. When I got mine I wish I had someone to tell me it was gonna be a great decision after a short period of discomfort, so I’m telling you that right now. I guess you can call me old school as I like to sharpen my chainsaw chain the old fashioned way: by hand with a file. Todd, I have a video suggestion: A showdown between electric wood splitters. @@athhudI didn't know they made handles for them untill I was in my late teens. I grew up in a family of in the woods sawmillers and when you broke out a new file be it a saw file or a millbastard you either put the piece of limb wood from the old worn out file on the new or you cut a limb and made a new handle. One thing for sure, you put a handle of some sort on that file because it was an accident waiting to happen.imnot talking about sticking it through your hand even though that was the most likely scenario. Falling with a file could get a man killed. We had one fall and stab a bare file under his tongue and into his neck. Before I went into the woods regular at 12 years old they told of several getting files in their legs and one guy that took a file through his thigh and bled to death. Ofcourse these accidents happened over a 70 year period but it wasn't uncommon for someone to put in 50 years in the woods back then.
@@martyadams3915 yeah, my tree cutting doesn’t get far enough away from the truck or tractor for me to carry a file while stumbling through the woods. If it is far enough away that I would need to take a file with me, that means it is not on the fence and is not my problem. I have always wondered why the saw manufacturers couldn’t incorporate a saw file or wrench slot onto the saw chassis. I despise keeping tools like that on me, they destroy pockets.

I bought the Stihl sharpener, two sizes, about three years ago. Best I have EVER used. It's a little "clunky" to replace the files but I have only had to replace two files in the three years I have owned them. It is amazing how many companies still don't understand that the raker has to be reduced as you sharpen the blades. The Stihl is the only sharpener I have found that addresses that.
I have owned the timberline for years and the one thing that keeps me coming back to it is that it doesn’t heat up the chain. Yes it takes a little longer but the edge is very sharp and I’m happy with that in the end. Feels as good as a new chain. But to each their own. Thanks for the video!
Stihl 2in1 Chain sharpener is the best sharpening tool EVER!! It's very important to get the correct one for the chain your chainsaw uses. The chain sizes for Stihl are: Picco, 3/8 Picco, ,325 and 3/8. I have two chainsaws and two tools. MS230 uses the same chain like your MS250 which is 3/8 Picco and my new chainsaw is MS311 which uses 3/8.
This might finally explain why I was unable to get the baffling Stihl to work with any of my chains! There are different sizes?? Is there any way to find out which Stihl sharpener to buy? I use Oregon 90PX (⅜” pitch .043 gauge low profile) on my small saw and Oregon 20LPX (.325 pitch .050 gauge) for bigger saw. Can anyone tell me which Stihl sharpener I could buy that would work with either of these chains?
@@BenDiscoe Go to Stihl dealer, take your chains and they will give you correct tools. The firt one I'm not sure because you mentioned low profile so I'm not sure if it's 3/8 or 3/8 picco, but the other one is certainly ,325
I’ve found that just doing it by hand works the best with a properly sized Oregon file. Buckin Billy Ray has a bunch of very good videos on hand sharpening 👍
Exactly. Bucking Billy does best sharpening video's. I only use hand files and will never use any of the toys tested here. With proper technique you make chains as sharp as new if not better using just a file. I can also recommend Husqvarna roller style file guide.
Buckin is quite the character isn't he !, hes very passionate about his saws and how to sharpen a chain to perform and square ground/filing which is on a whole other level of proficiency. Me personally, I've watched friends etc struggling with gimmicks because they had no idea what they were supposed to be looking at on the chain tooth and ended up with a saw that performed horribly, took off to the side etc. I like using the simple method, a proper sized file for the particular chain and put my saw in the vice which makes it so much easier and less awkward to do the job. So as Buckin says, "Get The Gullet" !.
@@factsnotfeelingssendit5961 I assume the tool is not capable of being adjusted to fine tune the raker height, where as doing it by hand one can use a gauge that has a hard or soft wood depth set. Also one would need a different tool for every chain size being used ( different saws ).
Another great unbiased video. I have been using the same Stihl sharpener for several year and it has held up very good and I am still happy with it. One thing I really like about the stihl is that it works on the job site. I use it every time i put gas and bar oil in the chain saw. Its easy to use and if you use it frequently its fast and does a great job!
I've owned the Stihl sharpener for years. It was recommended on Steves Small Engine Saloon about 6 years ago. I bought one. I've had so many others. They were junk compared to this. They got it right. As long as you follow the directions it'll sharpen that chain to just about a razor if you're good with it and take your time. So far I haven't had to replace any chains since. I have one that is finally getting close to being worn out. I used it last week to take out some pine trees, which it did easily. Still has life left. First trees this spring season.
The fact that you are adjusting your rakers while sharpening the chain makes the Stihl the overall fastest and easiest to use. It is my favorite. Thanks for another great video.
I have been cutting wood for 55 years or so and I found a dremil tool with a diamond bit works fine and fast for me. I don't need the guide tools at this point but I do use the lines on the chain. It may not be the best but for me it is the most useful with the sharpness and speed needed to do the job. I use a much slower speed on the dremil tool to grind the chain and the bit lasts much much longer. It is nice to see how they test and how sharp they are when done. As a mechanical engineer, I can confirm that your test procedure is precise and on point. As a STIHL sharpener owner, I can confirm, that that's a nice thing to have. It's one of few sharpeners that also reduce the depth guide. Big thanks for your work!

I personally bought the timberline sharpener a year ago and I LOVE IT!! Don’t get me wrong, the other two (Stihl, Granberg) seem like decent sharpeners as well, but I work on my dad’s old farm cutting firewood sometimes and he lived out on a big plot of land in the middle of nowhere! One thing I learned is when you’re out in the middle of those woods and you’re almost as good as a mile from your home or garage when you find out that you need to sharpen your chainsaw: #1, electricity ain’t exactly and necessarily available out there in the woods. #2, You don’t want to be using anything that’s gonna be draining the battery on your vehicle… that’s a good way to get stranded and askin’ for trouble in my book. #3, you need a reliable and effective sharpening tool that’s going to get the job done fast. So I spent a little more dough getting all five sizes and bits, but I’ve gotta say the timberline sharpener was definitely and by far worth every bit that I paid for! Whether it was for my monster size chainsaws, or even my pole saw pruners, it had them razor sharp in a matter of minutes!
Just an FYI the PFERD brand sharpener is the original unit that the stihl sharpeners are based off of. They are cheaper and are IDENTICAL minus the handle color. You can get a box of files to replace the ones in the unit. I usually get 5-8 sharpening out of a 20" bar.. If they don't seem to bite when you file, change the file. They are about a dollar a pop. Out of all the sharpeners, the 2 in one sharpeners really do work the best if you are doing touch up or small repairs, if they are really torn up, you'll want an electric sharpener. Certified sawyer, with a decade of experience. Also, recommend putting the saw in a vise to sharpen. Just keep 2-3 sharp chains in a small bag with your tools, sharpen when you get home.

I've had 2-3 chainsaws for decades; 3 years ago I got a Makita electric - it surprised me with the quality of the unit. For years I bought multiple chains from an outfit in the NW (Baileys) at greatly reduced prices.Or I get them from a local shop for a bit more. Your presentation is well done, I compliment you. For my needs the manual Stihl unit looks like it would work fine, much better than a single handled unit. Not related to your presentation, but 4 years ago I got a Milwaukee Sawzill (reciprocating saw) & for roots or close to the ground wood cuts I use it over the chainsaw, as just a small 'dip' in the dirt or rock with a CS can dull the blade. Master Farm: Yet another valuable review. Well done. LOL I absolutely love it when my less than scientific trial and error method yield the same results as yours. But my method MUCH more expensive than just following your guidance. My old-ish Stihl 026 is an amazing saw. That is when the chain is sharp. Wouldn't sell it for $750. A few years back I put it up for the winter draining the gas w/o running saw till it quit. I know better - big no no. To boot I was out of Moto Mix and it had ethanol fuel mix. Just didnt act right that spring. For the first time ever took it to the Stihl dealer. Of course they wanted to replace the carb. I went ahead and let them "tune" it up best they could. I removed carb, dismantled 80% and ultrasonic cleaned it. Now works just fine. While at dealer owner came out hearing me complain about chain sharpening time AND results. He asked if I ever tried the Stihl manual sharpener. Feeling guilty about cheating out on the OEM carb, for 1/3 the price of an OEM carb I bought it. YES it works great and can take it with you in the field easily. Sorry for long comment

@@ProjectFarmI'm trying to kill Moss in the pnw... Tried iron sulfate this year, used moss killer from Costco/hd before, wondering if baking soda is best option. Might be hard to test though if you don't have any moss issues on your yard.
I have been using the Stihl sharpener for a few years now. I like how quick and easy it is to use in the field if needed (no need to hunt up power or fiddle with gizmos). The files have also held up very well and towards the end of a chain's life I really think filing the depth gauge at the same time helps. Glad to see you had good results with it as well.
Yep I’m sold on that Stihl manual one. Filing down the depth as the chain wears to keep a consistent cut is important and was overlooked by all other sharpeners tested.

Been using the Timberline for years, works great for me. You can order different sized bits to fit the chainsaw you have. Tried using a file, but the chainsaw was duller when I did. The ware is also very even with the timberline.

Great video!! I hit a rock that grew into the trunk of a bush with my chainsaw and dulled the chain today. Could not have had better timing for a chain sharpener comparison video! After watching the video Im gonna go with the stihl sharpener for the following reasons: 1. The price is very reasonable. 2. German made by stihl vs China, so better quality as demonstrated in the video. 3. There is virtually no set up time to begin sharpening. 4. The portability vs a power tool sharpener is better for on the job use. 5. Time to complete sharpening isn't terrible for a manual tool.
I've had the Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener for years and love it. So quick and easy and absolutely produces a sharp chain every time. Glad to see it did so well in your test!
Made me feel better about my Timberline purchase. I purposely went w the OG vs the knockoff. Going to try the Granberg now bc it does take me about half an hour for me to do the Timberline & it’s very hard on my thumb cranking the thing. It desperately needs knurled texture added to the knob. Kills my thumb & needs constant readjusting
After your last video about sharpeners, I bought an off brand version of the Stihl sharpener from amazon, under $30 with tax when I bought it, now around $25 with tax. It came with a spike foot clamp which helps hold the saw when I'm out in the field and can't use a clamp or have someone hold it for me. Definitely like using it, especially since I can leave it in my kit that comes with me to the field.
I've owned the Timberline, Stihl hand sharpener and the granberg. The Stihl is great for in the field sharpening if I need a quick fix, the Timberline if I'm sharpening multiples and the Granberg in my garage when I'm getting 5+ chains ready to work.
I also have tried several chainsaw sharpening methods and the one I always use now is the Stihl hand sharpener. It cuts down the rakes and sharpens the teeth at the same time and the best thing is taking it with you to wherever you are working! It is also the least expensive of the three.
You should do a follow up… drive around to a logging site and let several of the guys (of different experience levels) sharpen a few chains and compare their hand file work to the sharpening systems. I get the feeling with enough experience/practice the hand file will probably outperform any of the sharpening systems. I only sharpen like 25 chains per year and after a few years of that I can easily get mine sharper with a hand file and depth gauge than the stihl dealership guys can do with their bench grinding system. I’d love to see how these stack up against the old fashion file in the hands of somebody who uses their saw to bring home the bacon.
I own both the Timberline and the Stihl. Love both. I usually use the Stihl in the field for a quick touch up then at the end of the day resharpen with the Timberline to get ready for my next time I have to cut.

I use a small dremmel, as that does exactly the same job, although the onboard rechargeable battery pack, is of extremly low quality, lossing it's charge (mostly) before the chain is even sharp, meaning a recharge is needed halfway through.
I discovered that fault, when away out on a farmer's paddock, just after I had bought it, and charged it before driving away from the house power.
Not thinking, I didn't take another chain with me, assuming the new chainsaw dremmel, would suffice (but at least I still had an old handfile, that I used to finish the sharpening.
Now, I only use it to do odd-job grindings (mainly of plastic components) when around the house, or in the workshop - well away from any chain.
Arborist here - with a good simple round file (we use Stihl ones) you should be able to do a chain in five minutes with practice and you should also be able to get it to cut better than brand new. The ideal raker depth depends what timber you're cutting and also how powerful your saw is, so I don't recommend any sharpening system that sets the raker depth automatically. Just use a plain flat file and then use a raker gauge to check how high the raker is - most of the time you won't need to adjust them, they don't need to be the perfect depth just reasonably close.
Also, get yourself a saw with much shorter bar than the one in your video. Short bar means less teeth to sharpen, a lighter saw for easier/safer operation, less friction on the bar (effectively more cutting power) and for 99% of cuts the shortest bar you can get will be plenty long enough. Leave the big saw in the shed unless you actually need one.
We have about a dozen saws - and everyone's favourite by far is the Stihl MSA 300 with a 16" bar. We take three of them to every job. The only other saw we use regularly is a tiny climbing saw and a pole saw.

Have owned the Stihl sharpener for years. It’s fantastic. The fact that it files down the raker is a game changer. You can sharpen the chain many times before needing to replace.
Indeed it is the best besides a good hand file but for in the field can't be beat.
There was another TH-cam guy, home star something or other, but he did the Stihl sharpener and said he'd ONLY use that Stihl all in one sharpener.

Yes! A little flick. I use an electric stihl and it's five steady forward strokes (as if using a file) and a little upwards on the last stroke
But if you use the correct size file you shouldn't have to lift the file.

I love your videos, i just want to say as a chainsaw enthusiast i use the Stihl sharpener and if you put the bar in a bench vise that is mounted at a comfortable work height and position you can get an extremely precise hold and push on the sharpener a shrarpen sharper than new is possible. keep making the great videos thank you we love them.

That sliding Stihl sharpener is spectacular. I spent several days non-stop cutting with an MS360 saw removing a couple of enormous trees and that thing was a life saver. After some practice, it only takes a few minutes to put a new edge on the entire chain. If you do it every time you fill the saw with gas it really keeps things moving. It was $40 when I bought it on Amazon, but it was worth every penny.

Stihl sharpener is also known as a Pferd sharpener, and in my opinion, it is the easiest, very effective, and my personal favorite.
The Stihl is ideal for resharpening in the field and the Timberline for example is good for sharpening done at home.
I have the Pferd with the blue handles. It's about $9 less than the Stihl. Husqvarna sells something similar that os only $34. Then there are the Chinese Pferd knockoffs for about $23 I think. Not saying these all need to be tested but......

when you put a new chain on, just do "maintenance" files with the stihl file every tank or two of gas. just real quick 1-2 swipes on each cutter. takes 3minutes and it stays sharp all day.
I have been using the Timberline system for the past 6 years. I am 64 years old and run seven saws. I can do my 20" Rancher under 15 min. My chains last 3 times longer and tooth consistency is second to none. I have found using a 3/16 cutter on a 7/32 chain improves cutting performance. The Timberline cutters are Tungsten steel and will do 50 plus sharpenings. Best money I have ever spent. Sharpenings can be done in the woods, tailgate or benchtop.

I have hand filed beginning at the grand old age of 12 under the stern supervision of my Grandfather, he did me well!
I also use the Timberline system, and have found it to produce the best results of any sharpener I have tried. I also like the Stihl, but dislike having to put my saws in a vice to use it accurately. The Timberline can be used anywhere, and once you are used to it, the time to sharpen is greatly reduced.
Timberline is awesome. I wouldn’t go back to a hand file, and yes I would be getting about 3 times the life from a chain

I cut about six cord of wood per year. For the last two years I have used the EZZDOO. I free hand without the guide. Great results. Very happy. Tip: When you order the EZZDOO also order three or four boxes of stones the right size for your particular chain. The EZZDOO only comes with three stones, one each, three different sizes. I would be interested in a comparison between wire splice methods, especially for automotive use. There are a lot of opinions on the internet about soldering. crimp connectors, solder and heat shrink, special heat-shrink that contains solder (genuine TE and knock-off) etc. My personal favorite is soldering manually and then using the solder sleeves, which nobody else seems to do, but I use soldering and generic heat-shrink as well.
Strength, weather resistance and vibration resistance are the most important tests I guess, but size of the splice and ease of use (especially in tight spaces) are also relevant.
Maybe a little bit outside of your usual themes but I think you are the right person to nail this once and for all.

I worked professionally with car audio, remote starts, and GPS installs before switching careers (IT now). You won't believe it, but myself and the majority of colleagues over the year just twist and tape wires together, even data wires. You can call it "military splice" for pictures online, but I generally fray the ends in two directions, twist them together, then wrap them around the wires backwards each side. If it's one loose wire connecting to an existing wire, strip away the plastic and poke a hole and kinda do the same thing twisting it each side and taping the wire to the existing one. Tape it tight and if you did it right you can't even pull them apart no matter how hard you pull. I have done my entire Jeep Wrangler build like this starting a decade ago and the amount of heavy off-roading and movement not a single wire has came loose or apart, inside the cab or under the hood.
Most professionals agree on absolutely not anything T-Tap style, that stuff will eventually fail on you. Anything else you mentioned works fine if done correctly though.
It's worth noting that no OEM harness in any modern vehicle has any soldered joints. Ideal solution is to get the appropriate crimp terminals and replace the entire wire, but we all know that's simply not feasible when adding accessories or making inline repairs.

Stihl sharpener is supposed to by PUSHED only, not pushed and pulled (as you appear to be doing at the 11:00 mark). I own 4 different sizes and it's all I use. Takes care of sharpening and adjusting the depth at the same time. Excellent tool.

He’s not cutting while pulling. Maybe turn the volume up on your device. There is little to no sound when he comes back to him meaning he is not actually grinding anything but just getting the sharpener back to him to PUSH forward for sharpening.
He has also done testing on files; your beans and technique. He knows.
He actually has a test on the effect of dragging a file the wrong way. I'll save you half an hour, it really doesn't matter. Regardless if you listen he's barely dragging while he uses it. It'll be fine
Some guys I was clearing trails with showed me the Stihl sharpener a few years ago. They let me try it. I purchased one the next weekend, and I have been using it ever since. I can sharpen the chain on my 180C in less than 5 minutes and everyone who I show it to wants one. Love your anything to do with chain saw reviews!!!!!!!!

When I purchased my Stihl chainsaw a few years ago I also purchased the manual sharpener. I was impressed with how well it worked. I have manually sharpened my chainsaw for decades. I tried the adapter to my dremel tool several years ago, but felt it didn’t make a long lasting edge. I now use the Stihl sharpener on all of my saws. Love it and have recommended it to several people.

Have used a Stihl sharpener for years. Easy to use in the paddock. Spent a couple of years cutting decades-dried Australian hardwood on an outback property. Brutal on chains but the Stihl did a brilliant job rejuvenating them.

My family has cut all kinds of wood in all kinds of situations for decades, and we all use stihl. Dad's saws are over 30 years old and still work awesome. Good ol pmcs and these have always lasted and just plain work. We always have used plain ol files. Might switch to the fancy stihl sharpener lol. Awesome review as always.

I managed a company back in the 90s that made all of the abrasive points for Granberg. Their quality requirements were rigid and our product was quality checked upon receipt. One of the best customers/companies I have worked with. I left manufacturing in the early 2000s I saw the Granberg test and expected them to finish first or second. They did not disappoint me.

It gets better pretty quick. If you were dealing with tooth pain before you got them like I was, you’ll be so thankful in a couple weeks when you’re all healed up. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was getting mine. I had tooth pain for decades but ever since I got them I’ve had no pain, and unlike the image that some people think when they hear someone has dentures, I can eat absolutely anything I want with no issues or pain. I can bite an apple or eat a steak no problem. The only thing I don’t like to deal with is gum or gummy candy cause it gets under the dentures and I have to take em out and clean em or it’ll annoy me feeling the candy stuck in there, but I can eat it if I want to and I still do sometimes. I had a couple weeks of discomfort when I got them and I lost a couple pounds from not being able to eat as much, but most of us can afford to lose a couple pounds anyway lol. When I got mine I wish I had someone to tell me it was gonna be a great decision after a short period of discomfort, so I’m telling you that right now. Good luck and hope they work out for you as well as they have for me

I guess you can call me old school as I like to sharpen my chainsaw chain the old fashioned way: by hand with a file. Todd, I have a video suggestion: A showdown between electric wood splitters. @@athhudI didn't know they made handles for them untill I was in my late teens. I grew up in a family of in the woods sawmillers and when you broke out a new file be it a saw file or a millbastard you either put the piece of limb wood from the old worn out file on the new or you cut a limb and made a new handle. One thing for sure, you put a handle of some sort on that file because it was an accident waiting to happen.imnot talking about sticking it through your hand even though that was the most likely scenario. Falling with a file could get a man killed. We had one fall and stab a bare file under his tongue and into his neck. Before I went into the woods regular at 12 years old they told of several getting files in their legs and one guy that took a file through his thigh and bled to death. Ofcourse these accidents happened over a 70 year period but it wasn't uncommon for someone to put in 50 years in the woods back then.
@@martyadams3915 yeah, my tree cutting doesn’t get far enough away from the truck or tractor for me to carry a file while stumbling through the woods. If it is far enough away that I would need to take a file with me, that means it is not on the fence and is not my problem. I have always wondered why the saw manufacturers couldn’t incorporate a saw file or wrench slot onto the saw chassis. I despise keeping tools like that on me, they destroy pockets.

I bought the Stihl sharpener, two sizes, about three years ago. Best I have EVER used. It's a little "clunky" to replace the files but I have only had to replace two files in the three years I have owned them. It is amazing how many companies still don't understand that the raker has to be reduced as you sharpen the blades. The Stihl is the only sharpener I have found that addresses that.

I have owned the timberline for years and the one thing that keeps me coming back to it is that it doesn’t heat up the chain. Yes it takes a little longer but the edge is very sharp and I’m happy with that in the end. Feels as good as a new chain. But to each their own. Thanks for the video!

Stihl 2in1 Chain sharpener is the best sharpening tool EVER!! It's very important to get the correct one for the chain your chainsaw uses. The chain sizes for Stihl are: Picco, 3/8 Picco, ,325 and 3/8.
I have two chainsaws and two tools.
MS230 uses the same chain like your MS250 which is 3/8 Picco and my new chainsaw is MS311 which uses 3/8.

This might finally explain why I was unable to get the baffling Stihl to work with any of my chains! There are different sizes?? Is there any way to find out which Stihl sharpener to buy? I use Oregon 90PX (⅜” pitch .043 gauge low profile) on my small saw and Oregon 20LPX (.325 pitch .050 gauge) for bigger saw. Can anyone tell me which Stihl sharpener I could buy that would work with either of these chains?

I’ve found that just doing it by hand works the best with a properly sized Oregon file. Buckin Billy Ray has a bunch of very good videos on hand sharpening 👍

Exactly. Bucking Billy does best sharpening video's. I only use hand files and will never use any of the toys tested here. With proper technique you make chains as sharp as new if not better using just a file. I can also recommend Husqvarna roller style file guide.
Buckin is quite the character isn't he !, hes very passionate about his saws and how to sharpen a chain to perform and square ground/filing which is on a whole other level of proficiency. Me personally, I've watched friends etc struggling with gimmicks because they had no idea what they were supposed to be looking at on the chain tooth and ended up with a saw that performed horribly, took off to the side etc. I like using the simple method, a proper sized file for the particular chain and put my saw in the vice which makes it so much easier and less awkward to do the job. So as Buckin says, "Get The Gullet" !.
I love the 2/1 sharpener. Give it a shot. No reason to resist technology. gets the rakers too. Will make a chain like brand new in minutes
@@factsnotfeelingssendit5961 I assume the tool is not capable of being adjusted to fine tune the raker height, where as doing it by hand one can use a gauge that has a hard or soft wood depth set. Also one would need a different tool for every chain size being used ( different saws ).

Another great unbiased video. I have been using the same Stihl sharpener for several year and it has held up very good and I am still happy with it. One thing I really like about the stihl is that it works on the job site. I use it every time i put gas and bar oil in the chain saw. Its easy to use and if you use it frequently its fast and does a great job!

I've owned the Stihl sharpener for years. It was recommended on Steves Small Engine Saloon about 6 years ago. I bought one. I've had so many others. They were junk compared to this. They got it right. As long as you follow the directions it'll sharpen that chain to just about a razor if you're good with it and take your time. So far I haven't had to replace any chains since. I have one that is finally getting close to being worn out. I used it last week to take out some pine trees, which it did easily. Still has life left. First trees this spring season.

I have been cutting wood for 55 years or so and I found a dremil tool with a diamond bit works fine and fast for me. I don't need the guide tools at this point but I do use the lines on the chain. It may not be the best but for me it is the most useful with the sharpness and speed needed to do the job. I use a much slower speed on the dremil tool to grind the chain and the bit lasts much much longer. It is nice to see how they test and how sharp they are when done. I personally bought the timberline sharpener a year ago and I LOVE IT!! Don’t get me wrong, the other two (Stihl, Granberg) seem like decent sharpeners as well, but I work on my dad’s old farm cutting firewood sometimes and he lived out on a big plot of land in the middle of nowhere! One thing I learned is when you’re out in the middle of those woods and you’re almost as good as a mile from your home or garage when you find out that you need to sharpen your chainsaw: #1, electricity ain’t exactly and necessarily available out there in the woods. #2, You don’t want to be using anything that’s gonna be draining the battery on your vehicle… that’s a good way to get stranded and askin’ for trouble in my book. #3, you need a reliable and effective sharpening tool that’s going to get the job done fast. So I spent a little more dough getting all five sizes and bits, but I’ve gotta say the timberline sharpener was definitely and by far worth every bit that I paid for! Whether it was for my monster size chainsaws, or even my pole saw pruners, it had them razor sharp in a matter of minutes!

Just an FYI the PFERD brand sharpener is the original unit that the stihl sharpeners are based off of. They are cheaper and are IDENTICAL minus the handle color. You can get a box of files to replace the ones in the unit. I usually get 5-8 sharpening out of a 20" bar.. If they don't seem to bite when you file, change the file. They are about a dollar a pop. Out of all the sharpeners, the 2 in one sharpeners really do work the best if you are doing touch up or small repairs, if they are really torn up, you'll want an electric sharpener. Certified sawyer, with a decade of experience. Also, recommend putting the saw in a vise to sharpen. Just keep 2-3 sharp chains in a small bag with your tools, sharpen when you get home.

I've had 2-3 chainsaws for decades; 3 years ago I got a Makita electric - it surprised me with the quality of the unit. For years I bought multiple chains from an outfit in the NW (Baileys) at greatly reduced prices.Or I get them from a local shop for a bit more. Your presentation is well done, I compliment you. For my needs the manual Stihl unit looks like it would work fine, much better than a single handled unit. Not related to your presentation, but 4 years ago I got a Milwaukee Sawzill (reciprocating saw) & for roots or close to the ground wood cuts I use it over the chainsaw, as just a small 'dip' in the dirt or rock with a CS can dull the blade. Master Farm: Yet another valuable review. Well done. LOL I absolutely love it when my less than scientific trial and error method yield the same results as yours. But my method MUCH more expensive than just following your guidance.
My old-ish Stihl 026 is an amazing saw. That is when the chain is sharp. Wouldn't sell it for $750. A few years back I put it up for the winter draining the gas w/o running saw till it quit. I know better - big no no. To boot I was out of Moto Mix and it had ethanol fuel mix. Just didnt act right that spring. For the first time ever took it to the Stihl dealer. Of course they wanted to replace the carb. I went ahead and let them "tune" it up best they could. I removed carb, dismantled 80% and ultrasonic cleaned it. Now works just fine. While at dealer owner came out hearing me complain about chain sharpening time AND results. He asked if I ever tried the Stihl manual sharpener. Feeling guilty about cheating out on the OEM carb, for 1/3 the price of an OEM carb I bought it. YES it works great and can take it with you in the field easily.

@@ProjectFarmI'm trying to kill Moss in the pnw... Tried iron sulfate this year, used moss killer from Costco/hd before, wondering if baking soda is best option. Might be hard to test though if you don't have any moss issues on your yard.
And add cut off volunteer trees to that. Silver maple and mulberry can really get going if you let them

I have been using the Stihl sharpener for a few years now. I like how quick and easy it is to use in the field if needed (no need to hunt up power or fiddle with gizmos). The files have also held up very well and towards the end of a chain's life I really think filing the depth gauge at the same time helps. Glad to see you had good results with it as well.

Yep I’m sold on that Stihl manual one. Filing down the depth as the chain wears to keep a consistent cut is important and was overlooked by all other sharpeners tested.

Been using the Timberline for years, works great for me. You can order different sized bits to fit the chainsaw you have. Tried using a file, but the chainsaw was duller when I did. The ware is also very even with the timberline.

Perfect timing! I have to finish cutting down a tree and my chainsaw chain is dull and needs a sharpening. Now I know which one to get and which ones to avoid. I'll try to find a Stihl sharpener - good performance and reasonable price!

Great video!! I hit a rock that grew into the trunk of a bush with my chainsaw and dulled the chain today. Could not have had better timing for a chain sharpener comparison video! After watching the video Im gonna go with the stihl sharpener for the following reasons:
1. The price is very reasonable.
2. German made by stihl vs China, so better quality as demonstrated in the video.
3. There is virtually no set up time to begin sharpening.
4. The portability vs a power tool sharpener is better for on the job use.
5. Time to complete sharpening isn't terrible for a manual tool.

Made me feel better about my Timberline purchase. I purposely went w the OG vs the knockoff. Going to try the Granberg now bc it does take me about half an hour for me to do the Timberline & it’s very hard on my thumb cranking the thing. It desperately needs knurled texture added to the knob. Kills my thumb & needs constant readjusting

After your last video about sharpeners, I bought an off brand version of the Stihl sharpener from amazon, under $30 with tax when I bought it, now around $25 with tax. It came with a spike foot clamp which helps hold the saw when I'm out in the field and can't use a clamp or have someone hold it for me. Definitely like using it, especially since I can leave it in my kit that comes with me to the field.

I've owned the Timberline, Stihl hand sharpener and the granberg. The Stihl is great for in the field sharpening if I need a quick fix, the Timberline if I'm sharpening multiples and the Granberg in my garage when I'm getting 5+ chains ready to work.

I also have tried several chainsaw sharpening methods and the one I always use now is the Stihl hand sharpener. It cuts down the rakes and sharpens the teeth at the same time and the best thing is taking it with you to wherever you are working! It is also the least expensive of the three.

You should do a follow up… drive around to a logging site and let several of the guys (of different experience levels) sharpen a few chains and compare their hand file work to the sharpening systems. I get the feeling with enough experience/practice the hand file will probably outperform any of the sharpening systems. I only sharpen like 25 chains per year and after a few years of that I can easily get mine sharper with a hand file and depth gauge than the stihl dealership guys can do with their bench grinding system. I’d love to see how these stack up against the old fashion file in the hands of somebody who uses their saw to bring home the bacon.
I own both the Timberline and the Stihl. Love both. I usually use the Stihl in the field for a quick touch up then at the end of the day resharpen with the Timberline to get ready for my next time I have to cut.
