  • In this weeks video, we get out new Delkevic exhaust installed and fire it up for the first time in months. It didn't go without any issues but overall we're moving in the right direction!

    I’ve got same exhaust setup on my 74 CB550K. The Delkevic and shorty Dime city muffler sounds amazing on the 550. Can’t help but winding out the revs to hear it! I’m sure most my neighbors hate it.. either way nice bike!

      Did you have to reject your bike to use this exhaust? I'm looking for the same setup for my 78 550 with 4 into 4 exhaust but didn't know if I needed new jets for switching into 4 into 1?

    I found out the easiest and safest way to remove the old exhaust donut gaskets.
    •spray PB Blaster around them, let sit for a few minutes. Wipe away excess.
    •heat up with a torch for about 15 seconds. Obviously make sure there is no fuel or anything near to catch on fire.
    •pry out with a cheap 99¢ paint can opener between the seal and the head. Use something against the head to protect it from bending the fins.
    Also the seam in the donut gasket faces the front wheel I noticed (and yes they were factory) 😉

    Another great video Taylor! I can’t wait to start up my 550 motor...I have no idea how long it’s stood for, it came over to the UK in a container from the US it turns over, oil looks good and seems to have been loved.. but who knows, but that’s part of the fun right? By far the part of my build I’m most looking forward to! And that exhaust looks and sounds awesome dude!!!

    I used Harpic Max 10 to clean the engine on a CB400 recently and was happily surprised at how good a job it did.
    I not sure if you can it in the states but would recommend giving it or something similar a try.

    I would suggest some stainless pop rivets on the muffler to hold it on. If you space them even it would look great! Best wishes!

    15ft of quarter inch or 3/8ths clear hose mounted to a board add a little oil and you can sync the carbs...

    I had the same issue with my cb650 not charging. It ran OK with a fully charged battery but as the battery slowly discharged the running became poor. I changed the rotor and the stator and it solved the problem. Good luck 🤞

    Hi Taylor, I am a huge fan of your videos. awesome video. I picked up a 1978 honda cb550 that has the original 4 into 4 exhaust, but its completely rotted out, possibly all 4 pipes, at least the 2 left ones for sure. Do you think it affects the health of the engine? I read that the airflow might make the engine run lean and hence hot, and can result in valves being fried. how do these bikes with rusted exhausts run? I believe the carbs are not rejetted. thank you in advance

      your sound is always crisp, Do you record on your phone separately and sync it in post or use a wifi receiver transmitter? By the way I did like the part of your video where you pressure wash the engine and you had the GoPro attached to the stick, That was a cool little close-up, :) My wife pressure washed our driveway last week and came inside coverd in shit lol, she got undressed in the garage and left her dripping wet cloths on the ground and went for a shower, me being the good husband I am lol I decided to put her cloths in the wash, 10 minutes later I realised my garage door remote that I gave her off my keys was not back on my key but insted it was 2 foot under water in the washing machine 🙊oops. At least the drive was looks clean tho lmao

    Maybe late in the series to ask, but with an older bike like this, is it not worth breaking down the heads to check the condition of the cylinders, rings and pistons? I'm assuming it will be kept long term and not just trashed I guess.
    He might have already said this but I missed it...

    gap goes out - follow the path of the exhaust gasses... you don't want it pushing against that gap.

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Keep it on two wheels. No, really I would just get it running and learn all the maintenance procedures. This will give you a really good understanding of all the systems in the bike. Then you can upgrade and customize from there.

  • @rrz464
    @rrz464 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking and sounding good. Wanted to drop this note on the charging system: I know on the Cb650sc my wife has, it does not charge till about 2500rpm. Maybe something else to look at? I know others have the same findings from the various Nighthawk Owners Groups on Facebook.

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was down to reading 6.5 volts before I shut the bike off. It should be over 12V even at idle then go up to 14+. Haven't had a chance to look at it closely yet to see what the issue is.

    I'm having trouble with my CB350. She barely runs and idles and when I turn the idle screw up it idles fine but runs terribly. When I run up 1st and shift to second, it revs way up even when I'm off the throttle! I doubt a hairline crack in the boots is to blame.

    • @TheOxbowCabin
      @TheOxbowCabin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sounds like could be a vacuum leak, worth a check...
      maybe its lean so turn out the fuel/air screw a turn at idle then tone down the idle screw?

    How do you protect the exhaust ports and carb intakes while you are cleaning?

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the pressure washer, you have good control over the water so I just make sure not to spray it directly into them. Yoy could always tape them off as well.

    • @davidlandis
      @davidlandis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Classic Octane awesome! I've got a bunch of gunk built up on mine, but it's hard to get to with the headers on. I don't have a pressure washer, so I'll try taping them off. Thanks!

    • @ClassicOctane

      I got the header from 4into1.com and the muffler from Dime City Cycles.

      Other question, how do i know if my carburetor need to be replaced, my local mechanic told me that it may have some internal wear, but i did some research and all i found was carburetor rebuild with sets of jet fuel, needles and gasket, also change the float, nothing about replace the hole carburetor.
      I have a honda cb750 1981, and i know the needle and the float need to be replace, also the main jetfuil for one 140 (i guess), that was what he recommend (as you said in one video, that you prefer the fuel jet 110 for the whether in texas). But in all the information i looked up, i did see anything about replace the hole carburetor.
      Other think, how do you fine tune the carburetor, besides the float calibration?

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 110s on my CB550s. The bigger 750s might need more fuel. I personally have never had to replace the cards on one of these old Hondas. These carbs have a tone of adjustments (Float height, jets, mixture screws, and synchronization) just to name a few.

    • @henrryvilleta9136
      @henrryvilleta9136 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, i know, while more research i do, more things to calibrate i find, that is why i believe that the carb doesn't need to be replaced just a very deep cleaning and new parts. Where i can buy the rebuild set? mine is the original Keihin (i guess).
      And in any case, do you offer the rebuild and tunning services? The thing is that i live in Dominican Republic, i would have to send the carb to your location.

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't offer those services at the moment. I always buy my kits from 4into1.com I encourage you to try to do it yourself. It's a good skill to learn.
