My sister's husband proposed by taking a walk with her in the forest they walk in all the time (it was autumn, so extra pretty), getting down on one knee, offering a relatively inexpensive ring (they were both in school at the time so not much extra spending money) and asking her to marry him. She loved it! He knew her well and gave her a proposal he knew she'd like. He didn't spend any money on it besides the ring.

Since I didn’t, I worked full-time, had a part-time job and went to school full-time all year around, after I left. What was most valuable, even within that time, was my peace. I think we as women, often underestimate how much we’re actually contributing financially and losing, in these shituationships. If we actually sat down and did the math, we would see, their contribution is many times negligible.

Nah, I disagree with that. Ten years is a very long time, yes, but there are plenty of good reasons to wait before proposing, including your financial situation, waiting for your kids to grow up (which is what some people do), etc. Now, my partner and I knew we WANTED to marry each other after about a year or two of dating, but we're still not officially engaged. Won't be till I am out of college.
So, I will say, there SHOULD be genuine love and dedication after three years. Proposal and marriage should be discussed and on the table by then, or you need to question the relationship. That I can agree with.

I know a girl who got strung along for 8 years. we're 22 now but the guy wasted her adolescent, teenaged, and some young adult years until after they hooked up. then he left her. he had also cheated in the past. now I know they couldn't have gotten married as children but now all those years are supposed to be happy but they are tainted by his memory. he also knowingly have her cold sores which is a form of herpes virus. that shit is for life.
So true! We're barely scraping the 3 month mark and he's already starting his research. Caught me by surprise at first but honestly it was very refreshing to see how a man treats you when marriage to you is _his_ dream as well. My ex would always talk about it and say I'm "his fiance" in front of friends/ family but I hated it because he never even asked me! Luckily we met when I was 24 and I left at 28 but those were still very precious as I do want a family. This one now isn't just talking about it, he's actually setting it in motion and looking forward to our future! Hope she's finally at peace, sometimes leaving is just heading toward what you needed all along 💜
