    I am currently going through the stress of having Thrips. It began with seeing just one adult and they do extensive damage very quickly. On inspecting every plant, including my adansonii, I have found that the place where they hide is right down in the base of where the petiole meets the stem and where the stem meets the base of the plant or under sheaths of leaves. You have to try to pull the stem away as far as you can without damaging it and make sure you spray right into these with systemic or horticultural/organic insecticide otherwise they will just keep multiplying. Also if a stem has a groove down it they will hide there too plus there's the eggs in the leaf tissue which I have found to look like little bubbles with a line through them, so they really are sneaky and destructive blighters. I'm glad you showed your Thrips damage as sometimes the brown marks can look like water droplet damage or sunburn and the leaf yellowing can be mistaken for overwatering issues and you don't always get the silvering on the leaf that people may associate with Thrips being present. Luckily I had black Thrips with black juveniles (eggs are pale) so were easier to see on the leaves and in their hiding places.
    I have found with my adansonii that it took a while to find the right spot in my home but when you find somewhere where it is happy it grows like a beast. also they can be temperamental with watering so I put mine in a self-watering planter and have had no issues since. I have been looking at the variegated ones and I do like the look of the Aurea over the Albo so there's another one to add to my long list...oops. I'm looking forward to see what the next review plant is as I love this series, so thanks again Memo 👏👏

      oh no I am so sorry to hear you are currently dealing with thrips Carey, I know it can be quite stressful! Good luck, I hope you get under control soon 🤞🤞🤞 Ohh good tips on where to find them, I will, sooooo be using that in the future. Yeah I am the same with you, normally I would go for the Albo, but the Aurea spoke to me more this time 😉 sorrrrrrry, i feel like such an enabler sometimes 😅😅😅😅😅
      no problem at all, glad you are still enjoying.

    I had mine on a moss pole to begin with and didn't notice much size increase in the leaves. Switched to a wood plank and the new growth which is growing wild is huge. It's definitely one of the more beautiful of the 'common' houseplants. I've also got cuttings growing in pon (mother is still in soil) and have given cuttings away. I love these review videos.

    Thank you for sharing! I only have wide form “normal” Adansonii. It’s easy care sizes up quickly when climbing. Had some fails moss propping but I think I wet moss too much. I water propped in winter and it took forever maybe too cold. No pest pressures and spider mites adjacent. Aroid mix, lower humidity tolerant, drought tolerant. I would say they like less light than I would think. They get washed out easily. Maybe truly medium light not bright indirect. Very easy plant I love them climbing with big leaves!

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely agree with you on the light aspect, I was shocked when I first got them on how they truly did prefer the more medium light situation for sure. I had similar failures with moss propagating, but then someone told me to think of the wet moss like a kitchen sponge, squeeze all the water out of it, like you would wring a sponge and then there is enough moisture for the propagation, but not too much to lead to rot. This has never failed me, maybe if you want for one of your next props attempt it that way and see if you have good success in your conditions 😊

    Just losing my Adansonii at the moment, wasnt sure why till I watched another of your recent vids where you mention you let them dry out quite a bit. We have had constant rain for weeks and although the plant was in my grow tent outside, its solid plastic and the humidity sometimes was almost 100% so the plant could never dry out and decided it was root rot. Have replanted it in your Aroid mix as the soil was also too compact. Fingers crossed. Thankyou for your vids, they have become my bible.

    I love mine. I originally purchased 2. I found out later that one is narrow and one was round form. I had wondered why they looked different. The narrow grew like crazy right from the start. I have it on a plank and it has attached to the plank and is almost 4 feet tall in one growing season. In the US here so its summer. The round form was a larger pot in big box soil so I repotted as soon as I got it home. Seems like that one didnt take to well to the quick repot. The larger one of the two i split it into has done better. Has reached the top of its plank. The smaller one has just this month started pushing out new leaves. I assume it was making roots but it took its time. But i love them all! And yes its not an obliqua!!!!!

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely, it is never an Obliqua!!! that is so awesome to hear and also thanks for sharing our experiences with planks and the Adansonii, i have been debating using a plank on one of my propagations and I think I might give it a try based on your great success!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌

    If I get thrips, they only ever feed on the adansonii and the odd succulent, not the other plants. So there are always two satchels of Neoseiulus cucumeris in there at all times and they get changed every 6-8 weeks. The adansonii is around 1,80m tall, so two satchels work well for me.

    Thanks so much for mentioning the bleaching on the leaves! It’s feels like it’s part of the genetics as most leaves have it and very few don’t. Mine is in a north facing window sill and o think it’s not super happy, I’m in Scotland so same as you it’s very grey but I hope that right on the window would compensate for lighting. On the summer I was away for a few weeks and that’s when it grew the most in my south facing kitchen a few meters away from the window, then a bit of a tricky journey so far 😅

    I love the various forms of monstera adansonii. In Australia, the monkey mask is the bushier version that grows in clumps. The vine form seems to be different and is often called the Swiss cheese plant. But some seem to use the various common names interchangeable. I keep my adansonii plants in high sun areas, with hours of direct sunlight. Mine do well, despite the stronger sunlight in Australia

    Thanks Memo! I wouldn't say that this is an easy plant. Out of all my Monsteras, this is the one I struggle with the most, it's like I can't find proper lighting for it, either it bleaches/burns or it doesn't grow at all! My adansonii ''Indonesian Marble'' seems to be less fussy when it comes to lighting. Maybe I'll move my adansonii plants closer to the light..! Oddly enough, I own a Monstera tena which looks exactly like an adansonii at the stage it's at but it's doing just fine in the same conditions...

    • @StalkerNaturaliste

      @@StalkerNaturaliste I've found very little info on Monstera tena but what I've found said that it was a subspecies of obliqua. It's so uncommon that I can't really make sure that the specimen I have on my hands is actually a Monstera tena even if I trust the person I bought it from. I'm pretty positive about the ID of my laniata though and they are definitely different plants, as you said, the laniata leaves have a more rubbery texture and the tena I have has the same silky sheen as an adansonii.

    Hi! First time commenting here! Just wanted to thank you for sharing so much interesting informations and on such a regular basis! You've been a great help especially with plants that I was kind of hesitant to add to my collection ( looking at you philodendron verrucosum 😂)
    I have a monstera adansonii but mine actually HATES full light. In my growing conditions at the very least. When it does get too much light the leaves start sporting some yellow spots and it wilts really easily 😅
    I moved it farther away from the window in the most humid room of the house and it's far happier!
    I do agree that it's a vigorous grower though!
    Also knock on wood it's not as prone to pests as most of my alocasias are 🤞!

    Just found you! Hello fellow brit, and thank you for this deep dive! Mine's a complete b*tch, but as she's my first one of her kind, I'm determined to try to make her happy. She's currently got a leaf ratio of 4 deaths to every birth, so it's looking iffy... I was surprised not to see a chapter here about watering...? I just want to osmosis-style more of your obvious expertise, I think. I also quite want to live in your conservatory. :)

    Please can you also make a review on some prayer plants? I´d like to see a review on your orbifolia - I saw her when she was over a year old in one of your older videos :-)
    Adansonii - pests: I had a very similar experience with thrips. She started yellowing and then browning - I thought I was overwatering her, or that she doesn´t have enough light...but it wasn´t that. It was one of my first plants and I didn´t recognise it for way too long :-( I saw no bugs anywhere, I had no idea thrips existed, and it just went really bad. Sadly she is gone now.

      ohhhh no, i am so sorry to hear about the thrips, yeah it is a bit frustrating that this is almost one of the quintessential first houseplants people get and then thrips is one of its biggest pest, kinda annoying as most people when they are starting off dont know what thrips are let alone what to look for.
      Awww I will try to do a review on my Orbifolia, soon, it is on my list, so watch this space in the next few weeks.

    Hi from Germany! 🤗 I got a rather big specimen about 2 years ago. Paid 30€ and it had f***Ing thrips! I didn't know what it was, or what to do and it took 5 more plants into plant heaven... Now though I got not too long ago a 10€ plant and its thriving in leca and a bay which is a bit stressed from the sun but growing really fast as well. I love it. But I'm fighting currently again thrips... I hope all of them will survive. And the thrips came in with a plant of the same shop I got my first adensonii from 😢 I guess I learned my lesson... Oh... And right now you can get them as an obliqua here and I'm just shaking my head when I'm reading the name tag... So annoyed about it tbh... But well... I can't change it 😅

      if you want to get started with begonias and you are a bit hesitant I would suggest you start with any cane begonia as they are easier to keep happy and they can get very big, the rhizomatous ones can be super challenging in the beginning. but when you get the hang of them, they are a joy to grow.

    Hi, I just found you during some search about M. Adansonii. I wonder why my plant grows so small (leaves are about 6 cm only) and so wide although it gets a lot of light near a south/west window. It is still a young plant in a small planter - could this be the reason? So then why do your propagations grow so big leaves right away? Thank you for your great video and greetings from Germany :)

    I got my first one today! Got a really good deal on a very full 6.5 inch hanging basket, but!!!! I think it has spider mites, as I did notice some webbing inside an unfurling leaf in the middle of the basket. It is so hard to tell if there’s more because it is really really full and also has so many new leaves coming… but I’m just wondering… could it potentially have more than spider mites? And if so, how would you treat it? I sprayed the hell out of it with insecticidal soap and left in dripping in the bathtub, other than that I have no idea what else I could do with such a leafy plant 🪴

    This is NOT Monstera adansonii and I am still surprised how this information is not well known in the hobby. Anatomically it is closer to Monstera lechleriana but it's different from all known clones of lechleriana so monstera enthousiasts call it Monstera noID, Monstera aff/cf. lechleriana etc... There is also several clones of this plant, the "indo form" have narrow leaves and I think it's the progenitor of "archipelago" and indonesian variegated , the "wide form" is the progenitor of most variegated forms. I think there is also a "double window" form.
    I have both this plant and Monstera adansonii subsp. laniata, the later is slightly more difficult to propagate but mature faster. It doesn't have the velvetness of the noID and a very dark green color. The most common clone have mature leaves very similar to the esqueleto Monstera (but darker and smaller) and can be considered as a way cheaper dupe.

    • @nackedgrils9302
      @nackedgrils9302 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have no idea where you're coming from with this and, as someone who also collects Monstera, I'd like to see your sources.
      M. lechleriana has slit-shaped fenestrations that are closer to the center of the leaf, much longer (and larger) leaves and it's actually quite rare, so I'll have to disagree here, they barely look alike one another. Monstera laniata is quite similar to lechleriana but mature specimens differ quite a bit. The regular Monstera adansonii is described exactly as the plant on display in this video even though I have to agree that the botanical identification of adansonii subspecies seem to be a complete mess (is there even a centralized resource to identify Aroids? I wish I could find one...) you'll need to bring some proof for anybody to consider seriously the information you've brought here because a quick Google search didn't turn any result for me. I find it very hard to swallow that this extremely common Monstera, known by everyone as an adansonii, wouldn't be an adansonii but furthermore that it doesn't even have a species name...

      MI can find zero information online to back up what you say here after having a 20 minute Google search.
      I’m okay with people correcting the record but if you’re not going to back it up with your sources, then it’s hard to take it seriously. And if you say “Facebook says….” then that’s even more of a reason to be skeptical.
