🌿 Unboxing 6 Must-Have Houseplants! 🌵 Tropical Treasures Revealed 🌱
Welcome to my latest video! Today, I’m back with an exciting unboxing video, showcasing six unusual houseplants that I recently picked up from GrowTropicals here in the UK. If you're into rare plants or just looking to spice up your collection, you're in the right place! In this video, I’m thrilled to share some unique finds that you don’t see every day, including a spiral cactus 🌵, a beautiful variegated Pellionia, and a few other tropical gems that I couldn’t resist.
But that’s not all! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I recently took a little vacation 🌞, and during that time, one of my beloved plants didn’t make it. 😔 In this unboxing, I’m also unveiling a replacement plant for the one that tragically passed away while I was away. So, not only is this video about adding some new, rare plants to my collection, but it’s also a bit of an update now that I’m back after my two-week break!
What’s in the Box?
Let’s dive right into what makes this unboxing so exciting. All of these plants are from GrowTropicals, and they specialize in some truly unique finds. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s in the box:
Spiral Cactus (Cereus forbesii spiralis) - This weird and wonderful cactus is truly one of a kind! 🌵 It has this quirky, spiral shape that makes it stand out from the typical cacti you see.
Variegated Pellionia repens - I love Pellionias, and this variegated version is stunning! The mix of colors on the leaves makes it a real showstopper in any collection.
Holiday Replacement Plant - While I was away, one of my favorite plants didn’t survive. 😭 But in this unboxing, I’ve got a replacement! Watch to see what I chose to fill that void in my plant family.
Other Rare Finds - I won’t spoil the whole unboxing here, but there are a few other surprises in this haul that are sure to pique your interest if you’re into rare tropical plants!
Why These Plants Are Special
What sets these plants apart is their rarity and unique characteristics. If you’re a houseplant enthusiast like me, you know the thrill of finding something you haven’t seen before. Whether it’s the unusual growth patterns of the spiral cactus or the gorgeous foliage of the variegated Peillonia, each plant in this unboxing has something special to offer.
For example, the spiral cactus is not something you’ll find at your local garden center. It’s a bit of a collector’s item, known for its corkscrew-like shape that naturally spirals as it grows. Not only is it visually striking, but it’s also a low-maintenance plant, making it perfect for both beginners and seasoned plant parents alike.
Meanwhile, the variegated Pellionia is a plant that brings a pop of color with its mixed green, silver, and cream-colored leaves. It’s a fantastic addition to any indoor jungle, adding texture and variety to your collection.

    19:20 that's wild because I recently found out that I have two Cebu blues by propagating wet sticks in pon. They came from a box that was roughly handled in the post and there was some rot going on. But yeah, I was able to do it with pon, and in Arizona 😁, Phoenix to be exact.

    I grow about 30-40 different plants in a 4x4 grow tent, I grow them off of a single overhead led grow light. The light I use has a maximum power of 400 watts. I typically keep this light at about 50% power. I keep the conditions in my garage at about 60-70°F, and Wisconsin humidity is usually around 50-60%. I run my grow light 14 hours, and time it to be on from 6 pm to 8 am in order to save a little on my electric bill, and have lights on time still work with my schedule. This has the added benefit of using the extra heat during the colder hours. Most tents have outlets for exhaust ducting, so I also use a programmable fan that can be set to exhaust at different temps/humidity. Airflow is very important, they make perfect tent fans that will clip to the pole, and even oscillate. I use 3, one blowing directly on my light, one at floor level, and one in the middle. Using this setup my humidity averages 70-80% humidity, and about 80-82°F with lights on. And around whatever temp the garage is with them off. In my conditions, the least important part is the exhaust fan. I only find it necessary on especially hot days (Wisconsin can hit 100°F in summer) I have a 4 way hygrometer that monitors my house temp, outside temp, tent temp, and garage temp from my kitchen. I have had wonderful results, and with the proper setup it will more or less manage climate control itself. Just pop in once a day to water and check on things! The single overhead light creates different light levels, ranging from 500 ppfd relatively close, down to about 60 ppfd at floor level. Great video as usual, I recently found your channel and quite enjoy it! 😊 Hopefully this info is helpful to somebody!

    Thank you so much for sharing this. 2024 October now and your information is still very educational. I'm considering putting my Anthurium in pon now. I'm gathering all information before I do so. Sending warm hugs from Malaysia 🌱🌿💚

    I‘m so glad you mentioned syngonium in particular! I currently have an albo in pon that‘s VERY unruly and on a very ugly, very tall pole because I just kept trailing it up out of laziness. It has lost a fiew of its lower leaves, so now it basically looks like sh**, just a giant pole with a few leaves on it 🤣 I‘m gonna chop it up and plant the cuttings into the pot directly and hope for the best 😃

    Hey Memo, First off I just wanted to say that I love your videos and your energy! Second off: I might have some advice for the Ming (I've always called it the Ming Aralia, so realizing that it's not actually an Aralia was some new info for me!). I have had mine for about 2years and I got it as 3 rooted cuttings from my mom who has had hers for over 30yrs (it's over 6ft now. This is also proof, to me, that it's not a fussy plant because my mom would not have the patience and it is thriving in the Canadian prarries). I keep my Ming at ambient room humidity/temperature (20-34C and 50-70% humidity). I have found that it does not like direct light (I'm on the West Coast of Canada so pretty similar to the UK, I think) so it sits a few feet back from my southern facing window. It is potted in a terracotta pot with regular soil with extra perlite mixed in. In the summer I find I am watering it every two weeks or so. It does start with very fine roots so I lean more towards under watering vs over watering. I would be curious to see if anyone tries it in semi hydro. I also prune mine once a year and, oddly, this seems to encourage growth. Since last year the cut stems have given me 6in of new growth. It is definitely one of my lowest maintenance plants and I have not encountered any pest issues with it. I'm eager to see how you make out with yours!

    I finally got a breverimosa a few weeks ago! I was so excited to get it but it had gotten hung up in transit for almost ten days! It looked so sad. The base ended up dying on me but I had cut off the top and it has rooted and is growing! It's super tiny but I still have it so I'm looking forward to it looking like yours some day! The melanobullata is on my wish list!! I also have the amphioxus and LOVE it!!

    12:15 There is also a large form of tetrasperma. It's not huge, but it gets leaves that are about as big as a face and with a lot more internal fenestration too. As for the whole genus, they're a mixed bunch. R. cryptantha and R. hayi don't mature into anything dramatically different, but R. korthalsii starts off shingling, like a pointier R. hayi, but then suddenly changes into a plant with large, divided leaves (fenestrations to the margins). Also, R. decursiva can get massive. Regarding the speed, I've found that it absolutely races when it's happy and then pauses with that fat end to the stem when it's not happy. I had to leave my old one on the other side of the world and I've just bought one again and it was labelled "Philodendron minima", which is just wrong on so many levels. A small Philodendron species would have to be named Philodendron minimum as it's a neuter genus (-on in Greek and -um in Latin are neuter endings ... -os and -us are masculine and -a is feminine). Also, no Philodendrons get splits that result from fenestration to the margin. A similar look (e.g. P. radiatum, P. mayoi) is the result of a leaf margin that runs in and out. Rhaphidophora is closely related to Monstera, Epipremnum and, funnily enough, Spathiphyllum, and shares the process of fenestration through programmed cell death with Monstera and Epipremnum.

    It's wayyyy past time to see Hoya on your channel 😁 When you have a trellised Hoya and *force* it downward (say, to wrap a very long vine) there does indeed need to be enough loose vine so that it can adjust itself to growing upwards, or the plant will very likely "retire" it. Hanging, doing their own thing, won't have the same effect. It's free to find the light in its own way. Welcome back, and cheers from Iowa City 😊

    Some Hoya will still grow pointing down you kind of have to just trial and error it, others will stop immediately, if it seems like it should trail, it usually does ok. You’ll know right away if you need to trellis

    Yay so happy to see some Hoyas! What you need to look at is how the tendrils grow. If they are true trailers, they will grow downwards, but those that need a trellis or a janky stick are the ones that shoot 'up up and away' in search of something to grab hold of. I have one currently climbing the cord of the blinds and it's already over 2 metres high 🤦‍♀ My favourite starter trellis is 2 janky sticks on either side of the pot, with string woven between them. The hoyas love them, they cost next to nothing and actually look pretty cool.

      That’s such a genius idea! 🪴 Janky stick trellises sound like a perfect and budget-friendly solution! 😂 I'll have to try that for my Hoyas. Thanks for the tip! What’s the tallest Hoya you’ve got climbing right now?

      @@Houseplantygoodness I'd say my Pubicalyx and my Memoria have the longest tendrils, both over 2 metres but my Sunrise and Kerrii are both happily working their way up a wall and are flowering non stop. I have 17 hoya and have only stopped buying new ones because of lack of space. They are fun because they're unpredictable, like when they suddenly start to grow after 6 months of nothing, or decide to flower after 3 years, and you don't have the faintest idea why 😂

    I’ve seen both you and Emma from GoodGrowing mention that Pellionia is a terrarium plant recently, and I’m so confused because I have pulchra, and it’s possibly the easiest, least demanding plant I own. I’ve had it since February (winter for me), have kept it in all lighting and humidity conditions, propagated it many times, and it has never skipped a beat. And I picked up a big, full repens (not variegated, though) for a friend at a big box store about 6 weeks ago, and it’s also seemingly happy with relative neglect in ambient conditions. Granted, we’re just coming in to fall, and it has been fairly humid for much of that time, but we’ve had major fluctuations in humidity, even from day to day, and so far so good. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s so interesting, from what probably me an Emma are seeing on the retailers here they say it is a terrarium plant and I think we both took it as gospel, maybe not so! 🤔 Maybe your Pelilonia is just loving life with you! 🌱 Every plant has its quirks, huh? It’s great to hear yours is so resilient. How are your other plants handling the change to fall?

    • @beckyfrichek8190
      @beckyfrichek8190 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Houseplantygoodness so far so good-I’ve actually discovered that in my home, my indoor plants get the best light in the fall and the spring. Early fall, in particular, is a really good time for many of them, as long as they don’t get sunburned. My pulchra is in a fairly low light corner, though, so sunburn isn’t an issue for it. We’ve had roller coaster weather with a dry, cold week followed by a hot and humid one, and back again, but as long as I properly monitor them all for changing water needs, everyone seems to handle it pretty well.

    I love Hoya"s, don't get we wrong, but I don't grow them. Why? These are pest magnets. The moment I got rid of them, all (possible) bugs went with them. I grow mainly orchids and (too many) other tropical plants and when they went and treated all my plants, I've never had problems any more and that was over 25 years ago.

      @@Houseplantygoodness Yep, bug free for all these years. Of course once in a while a bug might sneak in but that's easily dealt with. New plants always are treated preventive and kept away from the collection for at least 3 weeks so no nasties will get in. The combination of orchids and tropical plants, including bromeliads en Tillandsia, Monstera, Philodendron, Ficus, Anthurium and sooo many others. Also flowering tropicals and trees. All are growing in my apartment now, no greenhouse anymore. I do have a few open top aquariums that raise the humidity. Some are shown on my TH-cam channel. Alocasia, I don't have anymore but some new corms are coming and this time I'm going to try them in full water culture. And to answer your question, my al-time favorite still is Monstera deliciosa albo variegata. The form that produces half and full white leaves. Not the easiest one to grow or root from cuttings but over the 10 years or so, I mastered it well. Another favorite is Pilodendron 'Painted Lady'. Lost my old plant but just got a new cutting from a friend to grow on again.
