Chronicalling my mad decent into all things houseplants
🌱 Struggling Houseplants in Winter? You’re Not Alone! 🥶
Winter is tough on all of us-including our beloved houseplants. In this video, I’m opening up about some of the plants in my collection that aren’t thriving right now. From rare tropical beauties to common houseplants, no plant is immune to the challenges of winter. If you’ve ever felt frustrated by yellowing leaves, droopy stems, or even plants that seem to stop growing entirely during the colder months, this video is for you!
✨ Why watch this video?
It doesn’t matter how experienced you are as a plant parent-winter can be a major hurdle. I wanted to make this video to show that it’s okay if your plants aren’t thriving right now. Even seasoned plant lovers like me deal with struggling plants during winter. Through this video, I’ll take you through:
The plants in my collection that are struggling the most this season.
The common winter issues affecting houseplants, such as lower light levels, shorter days, overwatering, root rot, and neglect.
Practical tips and solutions you can try to help your plants survive (and maybe even thrive) until spring returns.
🌿 What might be causing your plant struggles?
Here are some key culprits we’ll explore:
Overwatering: It’s easy to overdo it when your plants need less water during winter.
Root rot: Often a result of overwatering, this can wreak havoc on plant health.
Lower light levels: Shorter days and less sunlight can stress plants out.
Neglect: We’ve all been guilty of it-life gets busy, and plants sometimes take a backseat.
I’ll also dive into how cold drafts or fluctuating temperatures in your home can negatively impact your plants, especially delicate or rare tropical species.
💡 Let’s troubleshoot together!
By the end of this video, you’ll have a better understanding of how to spot the signs of a struggling plant and take action to bring it back to health. Whether you’re battling crispy leaves, wilting stems, or just a lack of growth, we’ll figure it out together.
Pro tip: If you’re into rare or tropical plants, don’t miss this video! I’ll touch on why these plants can be even more challenging during the colder months and how you can give them the extra care they need.

🌿Mum’s Lush Houseplant Collection After a Full Growing Season - A Greek Journey🌞
🥶 Feeling like -42 today. Keep asking myself why I stay in Saskatchewan. Hot chocolate with Bailey's is helps 😅. My Calathea White Fusion looks like your Aurea fewer leaves. It will be replaced, just not another fusion, the other 8 maranta, ctenanthe and calathea varieties love me and are thriving.
I lost a few I didn’t care about over new year when I was very poorly and could only manage the bare minimum and I am ok with it 🤣
It's a pest party over here! I have them all, some of my plants like my hoya linerais has mealies, thrips and spider mites at the same time 😢
South Australia here and can confirm the growing season is in full swing. Happy growing everyone 🪴
My Alocasia Tiny dancer sure is tiny right now.
🇦🇺It's 40c here and my shadehouse plants have their own air con & a misting system. The indoor ones have evaporative air con that raises the humidity by 30%. The plants are doing well but the owner is knackered keeping up with them all. 😂
I feel that, it’s so much more work over summer. Also in 🇦🇺 and I’m watering daily it’s crazy!
I've got a 5 foot tall Monstera albo, a 2.5 foot Amedrium medium silver, and a medium raphidophora tetrasperma that are all crisping at the end of their leaves. All my plants get the same fertilizer and no one else is crispy. My problem plants are all in self-watering with Pon. I've flushed them, made sure they've got at least 60% humidity, and I haven't stopped the browning. The Monstera & Amedrium are rooted in their moss poles and the Raphidophora has support sticks. It's starting at the tips and moving up the leaf and on the albo, doesn't care about variegation. So weird. Help! 💚
I’m at the point with my plants only the strong will survive in my house. I’m trying my best to give them what they need to keep growing it if one dies it dies. That’s less stress for me and it could be that my space wasn’t for that plant even though some I would be sad about. I’m ok with no leaf growth. That means I have to do less.
As this my first winter with my plants, there are 2 that I am concerned about. a parlor palm was full in may, but now down to 4 or 5 leaves, and my first plant I ever got the tristar stromanthe. a couple leaves are drooping and a couple growing in are almost like jaundice. They are both under grow lights, so what the heck?
Most of my plants were doing ok, not a lot of growth but not struggling either😅 But at the moment I'm really worried cause our heating broke 5 days ago and it's still not fixed. So it's about 12° inside the house, I hope they will survive😐 I wonder if anyone can grow the Yellow Fusion succesfully😂Mine always got huge spider-mites infestations and died🤫I cut the last one down and put the stumps in a closed glass jar, until now it seems to work 😊🌿
I found a few thrips on my sharoniae and spidermites on my mamei. And I personally hate winter with a passion
I mean they did slow down significantly, some of my duplicates died from cold damage (experimenting with tolerance) and note to self: M. obliqua peru and Euphorbia tirucalli do NOT like temperatures below 10°C. Some would appreciate higher humidity, but I don't mind the curly and/or cracked winter leaf or two as long as the plant is fine in spring. TBH, I think I mind the cold and dark more than my plants do? 😅
Have you tried sansevieria in below 10 celsius? I'd be very interested in the result, to know how early I can bring mine outside for spring
I’m in Texas and we are expecting snow on Tuesday. That is a very rare occasion for us and so yes my plants aren’t thrilled. You can’t walk in my house without running into plants! Even plants that hate inside (banana and cannas) are inside. Ready for early spring.
Happy Sunday. I moved house in the autumn, which was a shock already and with this cold winter my plants are looking so so sad 😞 . Thank you for sharing all sides of this plant journey
I always thought my tropical plants were struggling in winter, but I never knew what "struggling" meant until I brought my tomato plants inside. Currently I'm testing whether potassium bicarbonate really kills powdery mildew because there aren't many leaves left to cut off >.< No huge pest infestastion yet though. Last winter I lost a third of my collection to scale. I hope that won't happen again.
Thanks for this Great video / information. 🙏🏾 Due to a life change, I fell behind on watering & general plant care - and was 😭 at yellowing leaves, ‘lost favourites’, etc. Have thought about semi-hydro, pon, etc. But until this video, struggled to find definitive comparison & advice. Also, several of the ‘plantfluencers’ who wax about how amazing pon is appear to be constantly battling pests and / or apologising for neglecting their collection. My gloriosum’s the only plant I have in pon - but only because It needed a large horizontal planter and Lexhuza’s was the perfect size.
I wish I had more natural lights for my plants but of the handful that do rely on the sun, are growing well despite it being as cold as 7 Celsius at night here where I live in SoCal. My windows are not well insulated but the plants are close to them. They are inside glass containers (usually vases with clear disks covering the top). I think the enclosures help to keep them warm and the humidity seems to be helpful. That’s the space where cuttings from plants with pests go. I have limited space for large plants so pesty ones are often started over to free up space and lighten the maintenance load. Often the new plants that come from the restarts, seem stronger. Acclimating them to lower humidity takes some patience but I need to learn how to be more patient so it’s fine. One of my favorite plants in a cabinet had spider mites, my Syngonium chiapense. I think I let the LECA dry out too much and that signaled to the spider mites that its defenses were down. Now I have what looks like bouquets of them so I’m appreciating them in a different setup for now. They were only on stakes but the roots growing out of the stem were pretty long and are showing signs they’re going to take off soon so I’ll have plenty to pot up and/or gift once I’m certain they’re pest-free. If the leaf remaining on each cutting continues to show signs of pests, I’ll take them back to nodes only. Restarting plants frees up much needed space and keeps maintenance manageable for me. Because the rest of my plants are reliant on grow lights, winter doesn’t matter a ton but many do seem to grow faster in the Spring (sometimes they grow faster than I can easily stay on top so I don’t mind the winter seasons here).
Good to see everyone's struggling in winter! How about your plants in the house, are they doing well?
through november I thought I was doing great, december I noticed things slowing slightly, and now I'm just hoping they'll make it! thank you for brightening another sunday my friend! hopefully spring will soon make my plants feel brighter aswell...
I have a sad ring of fire that I received for free due to the store not having the plant I wanted. It wasn’t growing and lo and behold it was silently rotting away. I have it in water now to see if that will get it growing. I usually do well with philodendrons but I left it in the soil it came in so I think that was my bad 😞
My plants are doing OK, but I can't say the same about myself. I hate winter. 🥶
Happy Sunday ❤
I got a tiny starter plant that looks much like an Adansonii. It seems like it's growing like one as well (smaller leaves, long internodes etc). How do i get it going ?
I cut , whole top off my pony tail palm, it was dropping leaves it had mealy bugs but now I don't know how to propagate the piece i cut and how to care of the trunk left in the pot? . Can you help
I picked up a dark form in a 12cm pot for the equivalent of 6$ recently.
How fast does pink princess philodendron grow? One to two leaves per month?
Great video. Thank you 😊
Definitely not a Grazielae.
I have never seen or heard of this Philodendron before 😀🇨🇦
We tend to pay attention to one or two bad comments instead of the majority that are good. That's just normal, more than often they would hurt and take over the feeling of a good one. Please never change for anybody, we like you being yourself, everyone is different and not everyone will like us. That's perfectly ok, after all 'For every train there is a passenger', if someone doesn't like something - there are many other channels they can move on to. So many people followed you for you. Thank you for being yourself! 💕
Hiya Memo, I have been trying to watch your videos logged out, to limit my hours on social media, but TH-cam has rolled out automatic ai-dubbing and your videos are no fun if you are not the one narrating. Do you intend on using that feature going forward? Because you could actually switch it off, but if it's doing your channel good, by all means, keep the auto dubbing 🤗
Hi Lina! 🤗 I appreciate you watching my videos, even logged out. As for the AI-dubbing, I’m not a big fan either - my voice is such a big part of my channel! I’ll definitely look into switching it off, I didn't even know it was on. Thanks for letting me know, and I appreciate your support so much! 💚
@Houseplantygoodness I see where AI-dubbing could be useful, but I'm glad you're looking into turning it off, thanks! Have a good time in Greece ☺️
This is beautiful!!! But it’s definitely different than my Grazielae …. Very similar growth structure but different leaves . Mine has very smooth leaves that are VERY heart shaped . Like a chubby little squat heart ❤️
Thank you so much! 🌿 Yes, the Grazielae does have that chubby heart shape, while the Eximium has leathery, rounded look. So interesting how similar and different they are at the same time! ❤️
Thanks for this, I have never heard of this philodendron
You’re so welcome! 🌱 The Eximium is definitely a lesser-known gem, but I hope more people discover it. Glad you found the video helpful! 😊
I do love a plant that sits over there & looks good, with no fuss. I have a few of them. Enjoy your holiday!
Yes! Low-maintenance plants that just ‘sit there and look good’ are the best. 🪴 Enjoy your fuss-free beauties - and thank you! 💕
Not heard of this one it is very cute and easy is always a bonus
Exactly! Cute AND easy is always a win 🏆 The Eximium is just that - definitely one to keep on your radar! 🌱💚
I have one of these I just love it very hardy I got cutting put 8n soil it had no roots attached to moss pole it rooted in and is growing a new leaf lost one lower baby leaf in process I have only had it a few months I love pillows leaves
Wow, sounds like your Eximium is thriving! 🌿 Rooting with no roots attached? That’s impressive! I love how hardy and rewarding this plant can be. The new leaf must be so exciting! 💕
Other name for philodendron eximium is philodendron fragrans
Great addition - Philodendron Fragrans is indeed another name for Eximium! 🪴 Such a versatile plant, isn’t it?
I kinda love the rainy background sound!
I’m so glad you loved the rainy background sound! 🌧️ Such a cozy vibe, right? Thanks for pointing that out 😊
I know you own one, but not enough people talk about the Mayoi. I can look and research all day but not a lot is out there.
I second that, would especially love to know if there is a way to make the internodal spaces tighter. My gets the light that bleaches other philodendrons and still the spacing is ridiculous
@agneslazarenko2653 I noticed that it has small internodal space growing crawling. When I put it on a mosspole it grew huge internodal space in no time 🤷 I am thinking of growing it as a crawler now...
@@karolinaw. oh interesting, I might try growing it as a crawler then :) Thanks
@agneslazarenko2653 I am not sure it is always the case, but I noticed that in mine and also in one of our Polish youtubers, that the moment it started crawling, there were a leaf close to the next leaf :)
I hear you on the Mayoi! 🌿 It’s such a stunning plant, but info is definitely limited. I don;t think I have it though, I have got the Alocasia Brancifolia, that can look similar? 🤔💡
Yes! Finally someone else owns this! I've had mine for about three years and it's so easy and fast to grow. Mine lives in normal room conditions, just in aroid mix, nothing special. No one else seems to know this plant, very underrated ❤
Yay, another Eximium owner! 🙌 Totally agree - it’s so underrated. Mine has been such a fast grower too in the past, less so these days! Love that yours is thriving in basic conditions, such an easy gem. ❤ Let’s spread the word about this amazing plant! 🪴
I'm one of those 1/10 people who got a single leaf that sprouted another one! I think the stem started to show up about 3 months after I got the heart, and the second heart was at its full size after about another 3 months. It's still not as firm as the first leaf though. How long does it typically take for one leaf to form? I'm wondering if/how long it'll take for mine to keep growing.
It kind of reminds me of the philodendron Rugosum. What is the texture of the leaves 🍃 🤔 and I love the round leaves, and I don't think that I have ever come across this plant but I would purchase one if I had a chance. Thank you 💕
Great observation! The Rugosum definitely has a similar vibe 🌿 The Eximium’s leaves are leathery with a matte texture - very unique! I'm with you, if you ever get a chance, it’s a must-buy. Thanks for the kind words 💕🍃
Hey Memo. I have propagated the waterburanium an it was fairly easy. Laid the cuttings on the side in moss. They rooted in no time an started putting out leaves.
The graziele has smaller leaves it's not same plant
You're absolutely right - the Grazielae's smaller leaves make it a totally different vibe! 🍃 Thanks for pointing that out 😊
I had the Graziel a the one you have is totally different. It needed a terrarium honestly. I fought it for two years and it never did well. More glossy leaves and sharp heart shape an I don’t remember the lines in the leaves. I think you have a real rarity there.
Sounds like you had quite the battle with your Grazielae! 🌱 It does have those distinct glossy, sharp heart-shaped leaves you mentioned. The Eximium is definitely a rarity - so unique! Thanks for sharing your experience ❤️
I'm the one who loves the Lutheri and mentioned it in your past video haha. I don't know why yours is struggling so much, maybe its just poor genetics on that plant? I wish I had good advice for you but honestly, mine just grows happily wherever I put it. Its lived in a cabinet with high light and humidity, in ambient humidity with lower light. At the moment mine has started pushing out 4 more growth points randomly along the stem, no clue why! I gave mine a moss pole but it doesn't really care about it lol.
Most of my philodendrons and Alocasia ‘s do it… they seem fine but my p. Frydek is suffer. It has only two leaves and one is dropping lower and lower… yet I only water it when it’s halfway dry. Could it be that I should just give a little amount of water because it has only got two leaves? The soil is very airy. Seems like watering the whole pot could be the problem?
Afternoon from Australia 😁 . Do the 3 girls have a youtube channel ?
I love a chatty vid where it’s like chillin with my friend and bs-ing. I live all ur videos to be honest. I can listen to whatever you wanna throw at us 😂
My esqueleto grew so fast!!! It fell over a few times and many of it's leaves got damaged so I chopped it up and started it again.
