Samsung ice maker problems

    The main issue is refrigerator overfilling the ice tray with water. A lot of videos claim sealing up the compartment with RTV sealer, but the frost build up is a very minor contributor.
    The overfilling of tray has two causes. The water filling of tray is just a timed water valve opening. Higher water pressure can overfill the tray. Also, ice chips may stay stuck in tray when it ejects ice, leaving less refill volume causing overflow. The actual tray is not flipped when it ejects ice. There are only plastic fingers that rotate around to push the ice out of tray, over the edge to drop into the bucket. Likely as ice tray gets older it gets its plastic surface scoffed up so it is more likely for ice chips to stick to it.
    I can improve my operation by backing down my water line valve I have in garage, but this unfortunately also makes the front water dispenser flow rate very slow. A better solution is putting a small plastic valve on the grey plastic hose going to the ice maker on the top backside of refrigerator to adjust the water flow rate to ice maker.
    Also need to check the water tube position above the ice maker to make sure it is not pushed in too far. It can spray water all over the place resulting is ice buildup all over the top of ice maker mechanism. You can adjust the tube's position by pushing down on grommet around tube at backside of refrigerator and push tube in or out to get proper position.
    Samsung has some 'Band-Aid' improvements. They have an enlarged overflow drain tube replacement on the ice maker auger screw drive assembly, a couple of drip guides to put on cooling tube loop, and a replacement computer control board that increases the drain tube defrost time between ice making cycles to better melt ice clogging up the overflow drain tube. It may also be shortening the refill valve opening time to reduce tray fill. Better to have slightly smaller ice cubes than a jammed-up ice maker. The longer heating time on drain tube is the most effective part of their fix, but it is also the most expensive part requiring the whole computer board to be replaced. For the drip guides to have any effect, the refrigerator feet leveling needs to be adjusted so the refrigerator has a slight downward tilt toward back of refrigerator so condensate water on cooling tube rolls down to back of tube where drip guides are located.

    Omg!! I am so glad I came across your video. I was minutes away from putting my fridge near the dumpster in my alley. I’d looked at countless videos and yours was the only that mentioned the top part of the ice maker that freezes over preventing the ice maker from making ice, which was my issue. Thank you a million times.

    Thanks for this. After a year of fighting to get our money back on a Frigidaire refrigerator we bought this Samsung two door upper freezer model and it just now a year later is freezing up in the icemaker. I'm livid!!!! It would have to be one of those days when everything was going wrong too!!!! I will take your advice and use my hair dryer on it. I'm retired and can't afford a new fridge. Thank you!

    Our Samsung was doing the same thing. My husband removed the whole ice maker. It's in two parts. There is a vent or fan in the very back that has frozen up. If you defrost that vent and reset the ice maker after you put it back together it should work for a while. Ours has worked for about 2 years with no more problems. I found a you tube video that tells how to remove the complete ice maker. Hope this helps.

    Same thing here. Known defroster issue. I live in a rural area with no Samsung repairmen, it was still under warranty, so Samsung gave me another fridge! I chose the same model before I realized this was a known issue!

    I’m a year into a Samsung Family Hub and yesterday (Thanksgiving Day) mine stopped working 🤬. Looks like I’ll have to add ‘blow dry freezer’ to my monthly chores list. Thank you for sharing your experience.

    Thank you. Yep. This is the problem we are having. Right there with you. Going to try the hair dryer. What we found in another video, was the cause is the water is spilling over if the refrigerator is LEVEL The FRONT of the refrigerator needs to be higher to prevent this.

    • @melseven5294

      There's a defroster in the ice maker. There's a sequence you have to press on the front buttons to activate it. There's a TH-cam video for that.

    I saw two comments in here that looked decent for solutions and im trying them both. first one was.. the rubber gasket that was leaking water, and a) if it can leak water B) it's leaking air, and the wet ice and ice build up definitely speak to that. Second was the tilt of the fridge. I got my level out and it was indeed slightly leaning back. I don't think this is the problem, but i'm trying both idea. While wheels are convenient for cleaning behind.. they don't have a mechanism to raise or lower the fride as far as i could tell so i put some shims under and raised it about a 1/4 inch. in the front. I will actually come back and update this, as it has been a pain in my A** since i bought the house.

    • @AJGschwind
      @AJGschwind 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So I pit shims under it... Put filler in that rubber surround and caulked along a seam I could see light leaking into the ice maker compartment... Its still happening. Not as much but still leaking :(

    I’ve used the hair dryer method for couple years and it works, but timely. What’s faster is to place a container of boiling water in the ice maker cavity. In about 30 or 40 minutes, voila, it’s done we can go back to making ice again. Hope this was as useful to you as it was to me!

      @@navyretired230 Can you tell me what portion of the warranty was still in effect? I'm where they'll cover the heavy stuff but not the labor and I just can't afford the labor. Plus they basically gave us the runaround telling us it was covered if we could show proof we purchased it when we said we did but when we showed them our receipt they said we had to pay the labor. Honestly, that's a load of crap considering this issues been going on since we bought the fridge.

    most if not all french door refrigerators with ice in them have issues eventually. As the ice maker is located in the fridge and not as strongly insulated which makes it warmer and prone to issues. This is why my rentals all have side by side with the icemaker in the freezer side.

    There is another You Tube video that states a crack develops on the left indention. You can place a flashlight under the ice maker left ledge and if you see light, then you have a crack. Dry area well and place a bead of Clear RTV silicone along the left bottom from corner to back. One dry, this fixes the incoming moisture which causes the ice maker to ice / freeze over.

  • @DarleenMB
    @DarleenMB 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Same problem here. I used my hair dryer the first 3 times then found several videos here and found out Samsung claims they can tell you used a hair dryer and that voids the warranty. So I tried doing a forced defrost. Worked 3 times and now won't work. I'll go back to the hair dryer. Thanks for the tip about using the chopstick. Mine gets a huge chuck of ice at the very back and it takes forever for the hair dryer to get rid of it. And of course it comes right back. I'll also join you in saying Samsung products STINK and I'll never buy another one.

    Had several Samsung appliances. HAD!! wash machine was 2 years old. completely rusted out and computer board fried. was told, by Samsung, that I am having problems because it is in a humid area.....like the laundry room???? Also, I live in the desert. My wife called me at work to complain about the shaking and jumping it was doing and then said never mind, it just caught fire. I purchased it from Lowes, and they made it right.They swapped it out for an LG that is 4 years old and works flawless. I buy ALL appliances from Lowes. They, unlike Samsung, know how to treat a customer.

    I called Samsung and complained and they sent a service guy out within a week and he replaced the ice-maker at no charge. My unit was out of warranty by over 3 years and I told them I hadn't had ice for almost 2 years and tried everything short of replacing it to get it to work. I think they realize they had a faulty unit and needed to stay ahead of any class action that in the conversation on the internet. Now I'm happy, happy, happy! Thank you Samsung, you really shined! PS: the new unit has a heater in it to stop ice build up.

    When you push the blue manual advance button the ejection fingers rotate around ejecting any ice, assuming it is not jammed up with ice to prevent rotation. The reason not to repeated hit the button is at the end of rotating the fingers it refills tray with water. If you hit it again before it makes ice it will double fill and overflow tray, creating more ice buildup.

    Have been dealing with this for several months, but was able to knock out ice, reset then it works 4-6 weeks. Now, however, I can't even get the darn thing out so guess it is frozen inside. Grrrrr...did order repairman, but if I'm throwing $400+ towards a repair that likely will not work, need to think about another...groan...lots of money wasted. May need to look into the class action suit, if it would even make a difference...So sorry for all of us that have to experience this.

    Samsungshit totally avoids the responsibility even knowing that I had complained about it when it was in warranty. Their service department called me a week later, the service was would be around$150 and would not include a new part which seems to be around $300, ridiculous. After this same issue we decided to shut down the ice-maker, turned off the water and hit the icon in the front panel that says Ice-maker off/on. now we just use Ice cube maker old style in the lower freezer. It was getting so bad it was freezing up the entire upper half of the refrigerator. we had to shut it off completely over night just to get the fans working again. they were freezing up ad stopping from to much build up behind the rear panel.

    Bought the same model in 2011. Within the first 2 years, we had to replace the computer control board. Later, the top ice maker stopped working and then the bottom ice maker stopped working. Had to take the top small shelf out of the freezer because condensation would drip along the freezer drawer's edge and re-freeze. This causes the bottom freezer door to not close tightly and then the water leaks all over our kitchen floor. A bath towel lined up along the bottom of the fridge is a fixture in my newly remodeled kitchen. Spent a fortune buying this Samsung and now have to buy ice at the store. A friend who is in the appliance repair business will not service Samsung products because their service support system is awful. We have also had sheets of ice build up under the middle of the fridge drawer. The Twin Cooling system has not been perfected and you are better off getting a full fridge unit for the kitchen and then a separate freezer for your garage or basement. I will never buy another Samsung product as long as I live.

    I am currently having the very same issue with my Samsung refrigerator. I am usually a "Samsung guy", as I love their cell phones and their TV's, BUT... As you have found, they DO NOT stand behind ANY of their products, and they show an outward and blatant apathy to any issues you might have with their products. I purchased an entire "suite" of Samsung kitchen appliances about 4 ~ 5 years ago, and the fridge has broken numerous times - this same issue and the "Twin Cooling" unit freezing up and locking up the fan inside of it. Samsung replaced that part for me for just about $400, but I have taken over the MONTHLY repairs myself. My Samsung oven has broken twice, and my Samsung dishwasher is giving us a lot of trouble now too (I think it might be a faulty sump pump). The Sears techs told me that my Samsung microwave will most certainly be the next to break. I love spending THOUSANDS of $$$ on these items and getting maybe 5 ~ 7 years out of them before they need to be replaced. Our parents (or grand parents depending how old you are) would buy a refrigerator and it would last 20 years - no problems! Ugh, rant over. Have a nice day. :o)

      Great news. We purchased out $2700 samsung fridge in 2015. The ice maker has been a constant headache. I heard on a blog that samsung is now offering warranty replacement o your poorly designed ice maker. I called the 1-800-samsung number, gave them my serial number and model numbers and sent some pics. I am scheduled for a complete replacement of the etire icemaker, drawer, mother board and other items all covered under warranty, It is worth a try

    It's the design flaw of having the ice box in the refrigerator area and not the freezer. If you open the fridge door too often or leave it open too long it will affect the temp of the ice box. This leads to melting, when the temp eventually lowers back down after you close the door the melted water refreezes causing the ice to all stick together and stick to the box's walls and channels clogging up everything... So 99% of the time the ice mader isn't broken, you just need to defrost it. Pain in the butt due to the bad design.

RUSTED HOLES at the bottom of the dispenser area. nearly $300 for a door that I replaced myself so who knows what labor costs would be. I AGREE! Great phones, LOUSY appliances. What's worse, this was a known problem when "we", as in both you and I bought this JUNK. Three years ago Florida started a class action suit against Samsung and I wish they'd include other states. Some Florida residents got a full or partial refund. For me, it's past its statue of limitations. Unfortunately, you don't know you've been had until it's too late. Fact is, I bought this item from Sherman's and they could have warned us it was junk. Better still, they could have just refused to sell products that do not meet quality standards. Fact is I sunk everything I had into this refrigerator and just can't afford the repair bills. My eyes glazed over at this beautiful stainless steel refrigerator and I never thought to check the reviews. Besides, if was from Sherman's and manufactured by Samsung, what could possibly go wrong? Who knew their customer service didn't give a squat about quality. Fact is there should have been a recall and redesign 5 years ago. If they stood by their products, it would have happened before I bought this trash. I was a lifetime Samsung fan until now. I haven't owned anything but galaxy phones. Hubby went with an apple I phone last time and I now have the Nokia. If they can't stand by their products, neither can I. I will never buy another Samsung anything.

    Problem SOLVED. Like some here I thought the issue was that putting an icebox @ 0F in a fridge @39F was asking for trouble with leaks and in fact the back of the door seal that touches the icebox can leak allowing 39F air into the icebox. But, I finally realized it's the 72F humid room air seeping through the ice chute seal into the 0F icebox! 1) Evidence of early complaints stated folks had ruined hardwood floors from water leaks - if the Ice chute door mechanism you can hear closing after getting ice sealed properly that would not happen which you can leak test by pouring a little water in. 2) I poured water into the back of the door and the chute seal didn't seal water let alone warm air - bingo. 3) Removed ice chute mechanism behind control panel plate and found seal, while undamaged, had small amounts of calcium buildup preventing a perfect seal. 4) Cleaned seal and replaced closing spring and voila! No more humid 72F air entering icebox causing frostup. It was never about the heat transfer from the fridge compartment to the icebox and always the heat and humidity transfer of much warmer and more moisture laden 72F room air entering the 0F icebox. Even with this finding and solution, as a mechanical engineer, I can say that having to periodically clean the ice chute seal when calcium or other buildup occurs could be minimized with a double or ribbed seal design change. Best wishes to all.

    You need to check the videos about using a silicone bead of caulk and using the menus (pushing freezer and light) to enable the heating element in the Ice maker unit to do a defrost for you. There is a class action suit and reportedly if you call 1 800 Samsung and complain they have given a prorated refund with lots of caveats. Retailers are forced to buy Samsung because of their contracts.

    I just found out, it all boils down to the leveling of the frig. It's common knowledge that it should be completely level, but with the design flaw, it solves the issue if you slightly raise the two front feet, leaning it back just enough so it does not overflow into the dreaded area.

I have to defrost every 3-4 weeks. It looks more like the back has to be higher as that is where the ice starts building. At this point I am guessing there is a small leak from a bad seal. Umm so but using the blow dryer you run the risk of destroying the unit, you should use a steamer instead. Fyi 400 sounds like a icemaker replacement. There's a conversion you can do that solves the issue completely. The problem is the ice maker itself. The company that I work for do them on their used units when we see those. There's also 3 types of icemakers on that model and only one has that issue so unfortunately it seems you drew the short straw. Also if you do want to play icemaker roulette, because not all of them have that issue, to replace it you take out that screw of the left wall, the panel should pull out towards you. Unplug the moulex connected to that large wire that was feeding down to the panel on the left wall. Push that tab on top of the icemaker, while pushing pull towards you and wala you can now try a new one. I'd get a warranty because that specific part has a high fail rate.
