There are a couple different models of Samsung Refrigerators
that may have slightly different Forced Defrost activation settings so here is some other instructions if needed:
    Samsung RF28 Defrost
To start a “force defrost” on a Samsung RF28 refrigerator, press and hold at the same time “energy saver” and “power freeze/freezer” for about 4 seconds. Then you should hear a “beep”, and the display would show “OFF”.
For manual defrost press and hold “energy saver” and “fridge/power cool” for 12 seconds. That would power the fridge off. If you press the “fridge/power cool” button, then it will switch to forced freeze mode.
If you press the same button again for 3 times, then it would switch to forced defrost mode.
    Samsung RF263 Defrost
Press and hold “energy saver” and “fridge” buttons for 8 seconds. The display would power off. After that, press the “fridge” button four times, the refrigerator would switch to “Fd” mode (forced defrost).
    Samsung RF263BEAESR Ice Maker Defrost
Press and hold “energy saver” and “fridge” buttons for 8 to 10 seconds. The display wold go bland and the fridge would beep. Press the “fridge” button four times, both the refrigerator and ice maker would switch to forced defrost mode (“Fd” on display ). You cannot defrost the ice maker separately.
    Samsung RF263BEAESR Defrost
There is an “energy saver” button on the left from the front side of the fridge. And there is “fridge button” on the right side. Press and hold both buttons for about 8 seconds, the display would go blank. Press 4 times the fridge button until there is “Fd” on the display.
    Samsung RF24FSEDBSR Defrost
Press and hold the “fridge” and “power save” buttons for about 8 seconds, then press the “fridge” button until there is a “Fd” on display. The fridge would beep until the defrosting process is completed.
    Samsung RF23J9011SR Defrost
Press and hold the “cool select” and “freezer” buttons for about 8 seconds, then press any other button for 4 times to switch it to forced defrost mode. There should be “Fd” on display. The fridge would beep for 25 minutes after that, which is normal.
    Samsung SRF680CDLS Defrost
Press and hold the “fridge” and “energy saver” buttons for about 8 seconds, then press the fridge button, until there is a “Fd” on the display. The forced defrost mode is on.

Will the forced defrost work for the twin cooling system in the back of the Fridge on the RF28HMEDBSR, o does the panel need to be removed to do this?

I have model RF28HFEDTWW. Clarification for RF28 forced defrost steps please. 1. Press energy saver/freezer buttons until display goes blank 2. Press energy saver/fridge button 12 secs. Any indicator symbols at this point? Unclear for next step. Do I press the fridge button? And is it 3 times? Thanks for life saving solution!

Same, until it melted. Thankfully it was still under warranty and they came and put in a new one, but the tech knew. 😂 But also, this ice maker is a piece crap. I scoured TH-cam years ago and never found this, finally today years old when I have that ish beeping and defrosting.

Thank for taking the time to do a user friendly video. The video made me feel very confident to complete the force defrost mode and getting my ice maker working again. This procedure will help me in the future without headaches. Only thing I did not know, was after the defrost mode is over, the refrigerator will go back to normal mode. There was not a need to reboot the two buttons for 8 seconds again. My reset temps are 4 degrees/36 degrees.

This was a great help for my non working ice maker on RF28jbed. It was clear and concise and told me exactly what to do to get rid of the ice build up. His most important comment was that you may have to run the defrost cycle a few times to get it to work, and for me it took 3 times. The first time mounts of ice hanging down melted. The second time ice build up in the back or the unit and inside the cooler coil melted. The third time the water line connection to the ice maker thawed out and I finally got water (and ice). Thanks again for saving me time and money and aggravation dealing with a service call.

I followed your very simple instructions and performed this defrost on my Samsung fridge a few days ago and it worked great! I did the forced defrost twice; the first went for 40 minutes and the second for about 20 minutes. Once all the build up was melted, I reset the fridge to 38F and the freezer to -1F. Within hours, the ice maker was functioning properly once again. Thanks very much for your excellent fix!

I am in Europe (UK) and have MODEL: RF56J9040SR
This worked. Thank you so much.
I first started having ice compartment issues 8 months after purchase: January 2019.
Samsung contract engineer came round, replaced a bunch of stuff in the ice compartment and updated the software
and said this is a well known issue and he does this fix on 100's a month.
2 years 8 months later ice compartment starts to freeze back up.
Hopefully, now forced defrosted and dried, I wont have this issue for another few years!

Samsung replaced our ice maker and things were fine for a year or so. After that, was the same old thing. The design is flawed no matter how many new ice makers are put in. Home Depot knew about the problem when they sold fridge to me. There was a class action against Samsung at the time, but I was unaware.

For anyone with the RF23M8070SR model, the trick to get the FD mode is holding down Freezer + Control Lock for 10-12 seconds. The display will flash, then hit the Control Lock button 4 more times until FD shows up.

I did this and I only got through two ice rounds before the thing froze up again. Even though someone above said not to, I used a hair dryer and it was a better fix. It took way less time, I didn't need to hold the door open for 30-60 minutes and it's still looking great a week later. It took about two years to get to the frozen point previously, so I'm guessing I now have another two years.

Excellent video! Thank you for posting this! Very concise and to the point. Sadly, none of this info is in the Samsung manual. We love this fridge, but our only complaint it this damn ice maker with how it constantly builds up outer ice. We discovered that the unit needed to be sealed (caulked) since the refrigerator humidity seeps thru the mounting seams of the ice maker unit causing it to constantly freeze up like this. If you look inside your fridge at the ice unit, you'll see what I'm referring to. It's a completely separate section that was added and the seams cause just enough ventilation to make it frost up all the time. I'm sure everyone has encountered this constant issue with this design. That's the only flaw we have dealt with, otherwise, we love this fridge!

Update: I patiently have been waiting for our Samsung notification regarding the 50% off discount code. Samsung said it takes 2-3 days. Over two weeks later I decided to phone Samsung Customer service for an update. Low and behold, Samsung had no record of my failed warranty repair nor the promise of a 50% replacement coupon. This is the only info video that really worked for me. The first time I called Samsung I was able to get better info. The second time, the agent was unaware of the fd mode (forced defrost) and could not help. I finally found this video and was able to activate the setting. Ice maker has already been defrosted with the help of other videos. However, I am using the fd mode to get rid of all ice before restarting.
Im not interested in calling a service centre for something I can do myself. Sadly, I’m guessing this will become a reoccurring task, perhaps every 2 months to keep the buildup minor. Jan in Toronto. March 2022

As another poster mentioned, it was necessary for me to turn off the ice maker for the fix to work. After going thru 4 DF cycles I still could not get the ice bin out, it was so frozen up.
Once I turned off the ice maker off I went thru another 2 cycles but I could now see water drops and the defrost went quickly. Waiting now to see if there will be ice in the morning. 🙂

I did put towel in and ice dropped, but don't want water anywhere else. 2) confused by Ice maker light on/off. when I hold button 3 sec it looks like it's ON, but then when open door it looks like still off. This is much better than shutting the fridge off and enclosing hair curlers in the icemaker compartment.

We own a hairdryer specifically to defrost our Samsung ice maker. It’s ridiculous that they never tested this before shipping them.

During the forced defrost mode, does the fridge door need to be kept open or can it be closed? Thanks

  • @stevewollam6514
    @stevewollam6514 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the tip about the Forced Defrost Mode. Currently, I take the ice maker out and then use a flashlight to see where the excess ice is. Next, I take a long metal spatula (I use the one for my outdoor gas grille) and scrape the top of the inside and I knock off chunks on the upper right side and way in back. I will sometimes use the pointed end of the handle. I also use a large plate to catch the scrapings and chunks that have fallen down when I pull these out with the spatula. A Preventative Maintenance for excess accumulation that impedes the Ice Maker from making ice s/b done every 5 days. BTW- I keep my Freezer at -8° and Fridge at 34° Using the FD Mode looks like an alternative to scraping.

    • @tedreid1035
      @tedreid1035 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Try to avoid scraping or using any manual method. A good defrosting method is to use a couple of mugs of hot water placed on the icemaker floor on top of a towel. Another safe method is to use a garment steamer. DO NOT use a hair dryer or heat gun.

Does this heat something up or does it just turn Off machine? I quit defrosting a year ago and started buying ice and compressor was hitting ice even tho ice machines been on off a year. Sounded like grinding. I whittled away a bit and hit the dryer on low (I know but ugh) and that stopped it. Found your video and over 2 hours later I’m still beeping. Tiny bit of ice still at back of maker where I can barely touch very very back behind. It was a solid block. I still did about 15 min of low heat then cool blast, heat cool so nothing got real warm but did help ice melt toward top where ice is made (was solid to top of machine). How long do I wait for The beeping to stop?

for anyone that found this with a fridge that has 4 doors and the one door that can select freezer or fridge. Hole the freezer button with the button to select that 3rd door if it's a freezer or fridge. Then use that same cold select button to cycle the modes

We have an RS25J500DSR and you have to press the Freezer and Water buttons for 12 seconds when the display goes blank (well, at least it does sometimes!), then the beeping starts. Press Fridge once to get both blue bars full: that’s “fans on”, then Fridge again to get two half blue bars: that’s forced defrost. After 19 minutes it will stop beeping and resume normal operation.

I couldn’t seem to get the force frost work. What I did was I used a hand steamer and forced it into where the ice comes out. I was able to finally get the icemaker chamber off.
I put it on the icemaker to see if it will cycle through. I’m still waiting. In the meantime, There is a small snowflake in the middle of my board, what does that mean or how can I get rid of it? My fridge has duel ice makers, the bottom one is working fine. TY!

All that's missing from this video is showing how to put the fridge back to normal from Defrost or a mention if it does so automatically. I accidentally put my fridge into demo mode somehow and that was a bit of a headache to figure out.

My 4 year old Samsung has had ice in the back wall evaporator every month. As if the defrost heater doesn't work. In fact, the defrost heater does work. Even though could not find any fault in the defrost thermodisk, and all temperature sensors OK. Heater works too (120 Ohms). Changed the defrost thermodisk anyway and really defrosted and dried out the cover. Fridge ran fine for 8 months. Repeat. Turns out the defroster only takes care of the lower half of the evaporator coil! Design flaw. Once you start hearing the fan buzzing, the ice is building in the upper half of the evaporator coil. Once the fan gets stopped, everything including the styrofoam turns into a block of ice. You can thaw out the styrofoam and remove the ice. Or replace that back cover and styrofoam until another humid time when it will freeze up again (design flaw). Don't get me started about the brittle plastic, cracks on the shelves, and door shelves that break off. Stay AWAY!

Just finding this while looking for a solution to prevent the buildup. I’ve been using a hairdryer to defrost and it’s done in 5 minutes. I find myself having to do this 5-6 times a year even with the low humidity environment where I live. Anyway, terrible design and very slow recovery.

I have an RF26R73515G with the "Ice Max" ice maker and the same problem. This particular model doesn't have a display, and the buttons have been moved to the inside of the fridge on the right. From top to bottom, there are buttons for fridge, FlexZone and freezer temp adjustment, ice maker, water/ice and door alarm buttons. Does anyone know the button combination on this particular model? I haven't been able to find it.
