    Hey Robert, I've watched your channel for a while and I think your Volvo content is quite helpful. I work going out to peoples homes to repair appliances and I see french door ice maker failures almost everyday. A couple notes, that type of fridge is called a "french door", a "side by side" is the style that has the left half as the freezer and the right half of the unit as the fridge. Also a hairdryer is not something I'd suggest to use for thawing as it gets hot enough to warp the plastic in the unit. I've seen several ice makers damaged from people using hair dryers. I normally just use an awl to break the ice off, if I have to, I us ea steamer. Third, Samsung is aware of how common this issue is and they provide a part kit (DA82-02367A) which is supposed to help prevent icing up by trying to route where excess water condenses in the ice room. It's a little plastic rectangular frame and two "y-clips" that pop on the refrigerant line in the ice maker. Also, when I do this repair, I seal off the ice room on the seam that starts in the front of the ice room on the left hand side and goes all the way back to the right back corner. We use some caulk that is almost like a clay substance and essentially just run a bead across the whole seam. Even doing all of Samsung's suggested repairs won't guarantee that this issue gets fixed but sealing off the ice room and putting on the little kit might keep that ice maker lasting longer. Also, from what I've seen, this issue happens to a lot of ice makers, regardless of brand, when the ice maker is in the fridge in a french door. Having an ice maker in a fridge section just tends to cause problems, in my experience, ice makers in freezers work better or last longer without malfunction. Hope you find this info helpful.

      Thank you very much for your time and comments. I should have mentioned that I did not poke the hair dryer in the chamber to prevent making it to hot. Took me about 20 minutes to get the ice loose.

    • @aestheticblight833
      @aestheticblight833 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah there's a whole lot worse stuff you can do to thaw out the chamber. Just last week I went to a unit where the wife informed me her husband used a blowtorch to thaw the chamber. Needless to say, they damaged the unit beyond reasonable repair

      Good comments. I am a retired Tech adviser and had worked on these same units brand name and under another company name all made by Samsung. This is an on going problem and has to do with the main control board. Samsung has made software changes to the board which seems to help for a while but will end up doing the same thing. Roberts tips on best,use every day. dump the whole bucket once every month and start fresh. This seems to be the best way to keep the problem at bay. By the way the kit does help but does not provide a total cure,it will come back.Thank you for comments. I do agree with you.

    Thanks for the video! There is a forced ice maker defrost mode you can use without turning off the refrigerator. Depending on your Samsung fridge. Press simultaneously the freezer and lighting buttons for approximately 12 seconds till you hear a ping. Then cycle the settings using the lighting or freezer buttons till you see a “Fd”. That will be forced defrost ( ice maker ) the fridge will ping for @ 20 minutes while it defrosts. You may need to do it more than once. I had to do it for 3 cycles so I could remove my ice tray. Then used the forced defrost one more time to finish defrosting the rest of he ice maker. Some chiseling was needed but not much.
    I know use the Fd mode about every other week to defrost the ice maker. Hope this helps. You can also look up “How to defrost the ice maker on a Samsung refrigerator.”

      Yes, I've had to use the Fd several times now. It does seem to happen when there is a power outage like Robert said, and also if you don't use your ice maker every day. Right now my ice bucket is stuck, I'm betting the auger is jammed up with ice. I love my fridge but I hate the hassle of having to do t his every few months. The first year was problem free. They have to come up with a better ice device.

      Where does the water go after defrosting?

    • @33maggie333
      @33maggie333 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@ajvusmc it goes into the ice bucket. I even have a few small cracks in my bucket but didn't have much wetness underneath. I do recommend running the FD (forced defrost) several times but always pull the ice bucket out after each cycle (if it's not stuck like mine was) and empty it out and dry whatever wetness is underneath.

    Thanks so much Robert. This helped a lot. I had a Samsung repair guy come out to "fix" my ice maker and all he did was rest it through the panel on the front and told me to wait 24 hours to see if it fixed it. He never even tried to open the ice bin. Needless to say, I had no ice 24 hours later. But after watching you video I opened up my ice bin and found it totally frozen just like the one in your video. I just thawed the frozen mess and now it is making ice!!! Thanks again!!

    Thank you for your video as it is helpful explaining how to remove the ice buildup & reset but there is more infor you need. 1st there is a class action lawsuit against Samsung as this is an ongoing problem with the overall design on several models. The ice will build up to the point that the entire ice maker & bin freezes together which happens routinely & not caused by power outages or any other external factors. We’ve had our refrigerator for 3 years & I have fought this problem from the beginning. I challenge anyone to melt the resulting ice buildup with any means other than a hairdryer. Three to four times a month I open refrigerator & tape hair dryer so that it dangles outside ice maker (bin removed) & low heat airflow is directed into ice “cave”. This absolutely infuriates me that this has to be done & I so hope that a hefty win against Samsung results from class action suit. If you discover the underlying problem please post another video.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you have the details for the class action suit? Like the case #?
      After thinking about it I and reading other commitments, my best guess would be that the main problem is likely caused by to much water pressure is spraying into the ice maker and causing a mist that creates the slow build up accumulation. After enough ice builds up it jams the system.

    • @danielvanderwoude7389
      @danielvanderwoude7389 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@RobertDIY I have this same problem with my samsung. However, the bigger problem with these models, is that there is a KNOWN issue by samsung causing the coils in the back of the fridge compartment to freeze up to the point where the fan wont turn, and thereby warming up your fridge to nearly 50 degrees, if left not fixed. This compounds the ice problem, as the ice gets "melty" and clumps together causing THESE issues as well. I'm frustrated beyond words with Samsung, as they KNOW about these issues, and won't issue a recall. Everyone is just out their money. I'll never buy another Samsung product.

      Just chip away as much of it as you can with a long knife or paint scraper. I do this about once a week or so and it keeps the ice coming. Still a pain, but much quicker and easier than defrosting.

    Hi Robert, I watch your channel after I've resolved my ice maker problem. What I did not do is to shut off the refrigerator. I went straight in thawing the frozen ice around the ice maker using a heat gun at high temp.Then I waited overnight. In the morning ice started dropping down the dispenser. I'm not saying that we work on an electrical equipment with power on. It's alway a good and safe practice to turn off the power when working with electrically powered equipment. Thank you for your tip.

    Watched your video and followed it. Took me 24 hours totally to get all the ice out. But the time was well worth it. Once the ice was gone, the ice maker reset and the ice bucket returned, I was rewarded with ice and dispensing after a few hours. Had not had ice for a few months. I was aware that I had Power outtages periodically but had not related those to the ice maker no longer working. Am now alerted to check for ice build up when and if my ice maker ceases to function again. Thank you for posting your video.

      My ice maker did the same thing. Before it quit, it made a "rattling noise" in the back. The refrigerator was still under warranty, and the repairmen had to unplug the refrigerator, take out the shelves, remove the curved inside back panel with the words "Cooling Unit" on it, and defrost the water line to the ice maker, in the back of the refrigerator. After drying the area, they put the "Cooling Unit" back panel back on, and it worked again...until the ice maker froze up again. They replaced that "Cooling Unit" and the ice maker, but the "Cooling Unit" sounds like it's freezing up again. And I have had to defrost the new ice maker twice this summer and fall. I use room temperature water in a squirt bottle to defrost the ice, with kitchen towels in the bottom of the ice maker to absorb the water and catch the ice.
      Side note: my parents bought a refrigerator in 1955, and it was still running 58 years later, when their house was sold. I know they didn't pay but a small fraction of what we paid for this Samsung (which had rave reviews when we bought it), and yet that 58 year old refrigerator was built to work and last.
      Anyway, I hope this information helps some people.

I turned it off overnight and the next morning I was able to remove the ice bucket, clean out the frozen ice, turn it back on and then reset the icemaker! I am so excited that this worked!!!

This happens all the time and so annoying to clear the ice maker by defrosting the ice, reset, and wait for it to work again. Hi Robert! Your advice is spot on. I was able to defrost the ice dam in my refrigerator. I'm not patient enough to turn off the unit, but a hair dryer can knock out the problem in no time! I don't even shut down the refrigerator. Samsung should provide a more permanent solution, and I hope that one is coming. In the meantime, I only think it's fair to give you credit for helping me solve the problem. I've had to do it about 5 times now, but you gave me a direct solution to the immediate problem. Bravo, my friend!

    Robert, you can't imagine how much I appreciate your post. It's a long story but Samsung and Lowes (where I bought the frig) have been no help. My problem started when the frig was not even 2-years old with water pouring out the top of the frig. Another long story with the warranty. After removing the cover that's over the hinges, I could see that the blue water tube had pulled loose from a little plastic connection. (Later, I realized that when the pressure built up in the filter, it pushed the tube out.) Anyway, I plugged the tube back in. The filter alert light had come on so I also replaced the filter. Everything was OK for about 6 months and the red light showed a filter problem again so now I keep replacements on hand and all was well until a month ago. Now the water is pouring out of the same area but the blue tube hasn't come loose and the water is pouring out of that same area any time I want a glass of water. The covering over the hinges has to be in place in order to get it to send out water so it's difficult to see where the water is actually coming from but I'm certain that the water is coming from under that hinge covering. I've not been able to remove the front of the ice maker either but I'm going to use my hair dryer to see if I can get that free. I'm 78 years old widow and recovering from cancer and chemo so this frig thing has just about done me in. Can I adopt you?

      Yes, I am available for adoption. Spoke with an older gentleman about it yesterday but it appears that he has his hands full with current relatives. 🤗

    Video on fixing the Samsung side by side ice maker was great. Really helped fix my ice maker. About the only thing I did different was instead of using hair dryer, I used cups of hot water. I got the ice bucket out. The ice maker was frozen up solid. I put two coffee cups of hot water in the ice maker and then shut the door. Replaced the cups of waters about every 20 minutes. Put a towel in to catch melting water. Melted everything in about 6 hours. Kept door closed So all food was fine. Works great. Tips were very helpful. Thanks.

    Robert...thank you!! Your video helped us fix the ice maker problem on our own and save tons of money by not having someone else come out to fix it. We turned the refrigerator off as you showed us, and then when we tried to pull the front of the ice maker out, it was stuck due to ice, so we actually started with the hair dryer right away. Within minutes we were able to pull it out all the way, and in less than 30 minutes we had all of the ice melted, the fridge turned back on , and the ice maker reset! Still waiting for the ice, but we really appreciate your help with this! Thank you for your informative video!

    I have less patience, so I never turned it off and started blow-drying it and then I scraped it with a wooden spoon. I put a small kitchen towel in so it would soak up the melting ice. Thanks for the video Robert. I have been struggling with this same ice maker in my fridge for a few years and have a trick that I use to help manage it.
    Mine would automatically stop making ice when the hopper was full for the first couple of years and I think that is how they should all work but I figure that whatever sensor it uses to detect a full bin stopped working at some point and now it just keeps making ice until it just jams up.
    TIP: You can turn the Ice Maker on and off with the "Ice Maker OFF" button. Touch it for more than half a second and less that 3 seconds and it will toggle between On and Off.
    What I do now is turn it ON for a few hours to partially fill up the hopper and then turn it OFF. Then we use the ice in the bucket over the next few days or a week. When it gets low I turn it back ON again for a half day or so to fill it back up again. You can tell when the ice is getting low and it is taking a while to spit out the cubes.
    This has worked for the last couple of years with no freeze ups.
    I just wish I could find out how to get the ice bucket full sensor working again. I suspect it is a little LED light looking thing at the back of the machine above and to the right of the metal Auger gear. It seems to have a corresponding hole in the back of the ice hopper where it would shine through.

    I had this ice build up problem as well. If you press the Freezer + Lighting buttons on the door face simultaneously for 10 seconds you have the option to select Defrost for the ice maker. This feature will melt the ice build up-not enough to make a watery mess but enough to easily remove the ice with your hand. I was actually surprised at how easy this was. Selecting the reset button is important as you mentioned.

    Thanks, Robert, for the very helpful video. Like yours, my ice bucket was frozen solid and wouldn't pull out. I had to defrost the refrigerator. My wife used trays of hot water in the refrigerator until I could pull the ice bucket out. Once that was out of the way, more trays of hot water inside the ice maker melted the ice there. Which looked just like yours! I was back in business in about three hours.

    Ice Off Button can be used to turn off ice maker and lock ice dispenser. A short tap will turn off the ice maker and show a symbol indicating it is turned off. Holding for 3 seconds will lock the ice dispenser and show a symbol with the "lock." The two symbols are different from each other but created by tapping (ICE MAKER OFF) or holding (ICE MAKER DISPENSIING LOCKED) using the same button. Very helpful video. Thanks!

    Hello Robert. Used the hairdryer to defrost the ice build-up on top of the icemaker (it wasn't nearly as iced up as your icemaker). Got the ice out fairly quickly and followed the rest of your instructions which led to success! Great info Robert. I’ve recently been told that part of the cause of this problem is the unit not being leveled at installation. If you don’t crank the front levelers up, the balance will be off and water can run out of the ice cube tray and freeze on the side and bottom of the maker.

Now the only issue is the continual ice build up in the ice maker - so at least weekly I removed the ice maker pull out tray and clear the ice - I gently use a wide screw driver - the other thing one can do is apply some type of sealant so moisture does not come in - anyway - great stuff! thank you kindly - Lee

      By the way, I believe I found another reason why the ice maker develops frost.I found that quite often after dispensing ice, the flapper valve that is above where the ice is dispensed stays open. I would think that would allow moust air to enter the ice maker and freeze. Thanks again for your excellent videos. This was super helpful, Robert. We live in northern California where we had several multi-day power outages last year during the wildfire season. I now see that these were likely the beginning of our problem. Everything is back in place now, even cleaned behind the fridge. Now to try to remember to check the ice maker from time to time....

    Hi Robert, Just wanted you to know that I did not get a chance try your method because my refrigerator is still under warrenty. I did want to share with you some words from the tech. He said to let people know not to use a hair dryer to defrost the ice maker but to use a steamer. Many of the parts of the ice maker are made of plastic and can melt if you use a hard dryer. The steamer melts the ice but not the plastic parts. The rest of your video was spot on about repairing the ice maker.

      You going to purchase everyone a steamer?

      @@RobertDIY Hi Robert. I will not be purchasing everyone a steamer I just want people to know what they are risking by using a hair dryer. They could be buying a new refrigerator from what the tech told me. but at least the know the risk.

    Thank you! After watching this video I was able to get my icemaker working again. I did not have to turn off my frig. I turned off the icemaker, then removed the cover and let it sit for 2 hours. The ice build up defrosted enough to remove. My buildup was not as bad as in video. I used the reset switch, turned the icemaker back on and it made ice throughout the night. Today it is working better than ever. Hope it lasts! Thanks Again.
