Awesome list, man. Several I've not played but will now look out for! Loved Motorhead back in the day and Buggy Boy on the Atari ST/Amiga is fantastic.
I am a HUGE fan of Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racer. The Dreamcast version runs like butter and the sense of speed is incredible. It's a great racing game!
Rock and Roll Racing, reminds me of Radical Psycho Machine Racing, which was also published by Interplay. Man, I remember playing Mickey Speedway USA all the time since I was a kid. What a great video Jason. Also, another game you should look into is Top Gear on the SNES. In my opinion, the game was way ahead of its time with its gameplay and soundtrack.
Motorhead was a gem on the PC, supporting 3DFX running really fast and really smooth. And i played powerslide and have completely forgotten about it. o.o wow
Love the nostalgia trip, my top 10 forgotten racing games; Speed Busters - PC Star Wars Episode 1 Racer - PC Burnout 1/2 (Before they had takedowns) - Gamecube Tokyo Highway Challenge - Dreamcast Micromachines - Gameboy TOCA Touring Car Championship - Playstation Street Racing Syndicate - XBOX Juiced - XBOX Midtown Madness - PC Destruction Derby - PC
Mi humble contribution: 1) Whiplash, a PC arcade racing game by Interplay, published by the second half of the 90's, I think. Super fun. 2) Extreme G 3 for PS2/GC, published by the now defunct Acclaim. The N64 games were good, but the third game for PS2 and Gamecube was absolutely awesome. Sony should buy the rights and make a sequel/remake. 3) N-Gen Racing for PS1, don't remember the publisher. You race with some kind of military looking planes, similar to Wipeout. Great graphics. 4) Toca 3 for PS2. Gran Turismo 3 and 4 eclipsed this game when it came out, but it's a masterpiece, choke full of content. 5) Sledstorm for PS1. The physics were nice, the tracks fun to play and the licensed soundtrack was tremendous. A reboot was released for PS2, but the physics weren't the same and the game felt generic. And that's it. I'm really glad you mentioned Rollcage. One of my all time favorites.
Awesome video, I even found some games from my childhood on this list which I had totally forgotten about like Powerslide. Also I loved NFS Porsche back when it came out, they nailed the car sounds in that one pretty well. Another suggestions would be Ballistics, a super fast futuristic racing game on PC.
Rollcage and Rollcage Stage 2 are both available on PC, and look much better too. The only thing is the US PC version of Rollcage Stage 2 got renamed for some reasons (Death Track Racing), while the European version kept the original name. I happen to own the original European version, strangely i found it brand spanking new in a Savers/Value Village years ago.
Kinetica for PS2 needs recognition, not just because of it's stature, but of the fact that it's engine would go on to power MANY PS2 titles in the console's lifespan.
Others have probably mentioned it, but you ought to give Beetle Adventure Racing for N64 a look. Tons of secrets, branching paths... It's amazing! Great series, MJR!
3D Ultra RC Racers Deluxe: Traxxas Edition, Motocross Madness, Crashday, Re-Volt, 4x4 Evo and 1nsane are all good yet forgotten racing games that deserve more attention.
I don't think you can consider Carmageddon "forgotten" considering they're still making sequels to that game and all the previous ones are available digitally. The first one has even been ported to Android and iOS.
I used to be the Senior Editor for a small technology review web site that unfortunately went out of business about 5 years ago. It was fun while it lasted!
I'm a bit late to the party, but - DETHKARZ! A late 90s PC-exclusive futuristic combat racer. It's got a great set of powerups, cool cars and tracks, and my favourite explosion effects in games, ever (I'm talking about car explosions). It's also dirt cheap, you can still get a sealed copy for like 30 bucks on ebay.
Awesome video!! Racing games are my favorite genre, so here are some forgotten gems for you: Super Burnout (Atari Jaguar), Test Drive Le Mans (Dreamcast, not the PC/PSX version), Re-volt (Dreamcast/PC), Atari Karts (Jag), Neo Drift out (Neo Geo CD), Cart World Series (PSX), Wacky Races (Dreamcast), and my all time favorite: Tokyo Xtreme Racer (Dreamcast).
The car in Motorhead at 03:23 looks like it's loosely based on the McLaren F1 from Scud Race by Sega, right down to the orange and blue livery. I'd never heard of this game before, but it's got a nice silky smooth frame rate for an old PC title.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHOS PLAYED ROLLCAGE STAGE 2 AND MICKEY SPEEDWAY USA. I discovered Rollcage 2 back in 2000 back when it came out and is still a fave! got to love that intro!! Ever heard of Vigilante 8?
hotwheels stunt track challenge stole their ending sequence from Rollcage stage 2. They both look identical when a race ends. But stunt track challenge was on the ps2. and the end of a race in stunt track challenge their are also different camera angles. sorry for my typing errors
Eliminator Boat Duel (NES) and Beetle Adventure Racing (N64) are two other awesome racing games that were pretty overlooked. I think Boat Duel is up there for my fav racing game of all time.
I remember playing a game on DOS called "Big red racing". It had no invisible walls what so ever, so you could explore the vast worlds (Which, if memory serves me right, looped). A lot of different vehicles and just a ton of fun! That was back then though! I'm not sure if it still holds up. But if you'd like to check it out, it's something i can recommend.
I used to own Revolt on the PC, and you are right about the graphics. So smooth and the frame rate is great! I own the Dreamcast version now too...and it's the same great game.
Proud owner of Rock n' Roll Racing. Very interested in that C64 game as well. Thanks for the great list of games! I mentioned this particular game in part one and you even replied back... but to whomever happen to miss it, I would recommend to check out Whiplash on the PC (NOT the beat 'em up game on the PS2). Keep it up man!
RALLY CROSS for the Playstation 1 is one of my all time favorites! Solid frame rate, tight controls, and AMAZING suspension physics with squeaky shock sound effects! Some UNIQUE FACTS about this game: 1) This game supported the Dual Shock 1 controller about 10 months BEFORE the controller was RELEASED! I remember seeing a "feedback" setting in the control options of this game that was not accessible and thinking "what the hell is that all about?" Once the dual shock controller was plugged in, a picture of it was shown on screen, and the feedback option "lit up" which simply allowed you to "enable" or "disable" the vibration. 2) This game had the BIGGEST jump I'd ever seen in a racing game at that time. In the Island Track about mid way thru, there was a HUGE jump with about a full second of hang time and a tricky, somewhat technical landing needed. 3) This game MADE you flip your vehicle back onto its wheels after you rolled it over onto its roof. You would have to use the L1 and R1 buttons with timing to "rock" your vehicle back and forth onto its wheels! Really a sweet and cool gameplay element that I'll never forget. 4) This game was the first to have a HEAD ON and SUICIDE mode which made you race in the OPPOSITE direction of either one or all three opponents! A tough and very challenging way to race to first place. You could even race 2-player split screen against a friend in the HEAD ON mode. If you could smash into your opponent as you passed by them, causing them to flip over without coming off your wheels, you were GOLD. Awesome!
Rollcage Stage II got released on PC too, though the North American release have a different name "Death Track Racing" (at the time they just LOVED changing names to try to sell more copies of the game...). Fortunately i found myself an European copy of this game with the real name on it, and amazingly enough, i found this one brand-new, still sealed!
stars wars: episode 1 pod racer on the n64 is still my favorite racing game, but Beetle Adventure Racing (on the n64) and 'Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2' on the Gamecube are also great ones
rock n roll racing is my all-time favourite racing game, me and my friend used to play it when we were 6 or 7, and we still sometimes play it today! so happy you mentioned it! Its where I was first introduced to Paranoid!
Total Drivin /grand tour racing 98 for PS1 really is a forgotten classic. It's a mix between rally and racing, but the unique part for it's time was the tracks. Varied, and the ability to drive outside of the intended track made this game stand out, even when Rage Racer and Gran Turismo was available. The most impressive part was the fov (field of view), the ability to see landscape far away was something very special in this game, when most games had the problem with "pop up" graphic.
A racing game that I'm sure is forgotten, but I recently ordered online is XGIII: Extreme-G 3. Specifically, the GameCube version (which is said to be superior over the PlayStation 2 version, primarily because the GC version has four players, where as the PS2 version only has two for whatever reason).
I glad someone remembers rock and roll racing. I have it on the genesis and it has been one of my favorite games. Sad thing is, I'm a game design student and I brought this classic up and no one in the room had even heard of it except the professor.
When you mentioned that the player can go off the beaten track in Motorhead it immediately brought to mind the PC game Monster Truck Madness, most of the time I stopped racing to go in search for the football pitch. My favourite racing game would have to be Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast, yet it never seems to get a mention. And it might be worth highlighting the 16 bit Micro Machines, not necessarily forgotten but definitely classic racers.
Was glad to see Slipstream5000 and Powerslide. Expected to see Fatal Racing, Dethkarz and Hi-Octane but maybe these are not forgotten enough) Thank you anyway.
Rock n Roll Racing sooo goooood and you are not the first one to put it to "forgotten" or "lost gem" everybody I know knows this game, gameplay and music are just perfect
Hey MetalJesus! There is game that I used to play as kid called Motor Toon Grand Prix for the original playstation. It's a blend of racing along with vehicular combat that has a very bright, colorful, cartoony aesthetic along with a diverse selection of characters and tracks. And it plays really well. I remember first playing it when I was 6 after I had gotten my playstation. I figured you might want to check it out. It's very affordable too.
Stunt Race FX on the SNES is one that so many people seem to forget about. I spent so much of my youth trying to beat that game and don't think i ever succeeded. It would be awesome to see that in your next review
Powerslide looks good even today, and I say that without having learned of the Glide support and wrapper until late yesterday. Just straight-up DirectX or whatever it was.
One of my favorite racing games were Lego Racers (N64 / PC) XGRA Extreme G Racing Association. (GC / PS2) Hyper Sonic Extreme (PS2) Boarder Zone (PC) Streets of SimCity (PC) (This is not exactly a racing game, but you build your city using SimCity 2000 editor and then you can race or brawl in it.)
Wow great that you mentioned Rock n Roll racing! I actually just asked EmuReview if he liked that on his forum yesterday (he is a big RC Pro Am fan). This game is fantastic. You can even see how there is some Warcraft 2 on those levels, as well as their love for rock (they did have Ozzy come play at Blizzcon once). Wow I really dig those Gran Turismo gloves, lucky you! GT3 is the reason I bought a PS2 (along with wanting to play DDR also as that was my new arcade addiction).
Great review Metal Jesus. Enjoyed your narration on these classics. I myself is fan of racing games old & new. Among other PC racing classics I enjoyed: 1989 Street Rod - Uber fun 1990 Street Rod 2 - Incredibly hard but challenging at the same time 1989 Test Drive II the Duel - My favorite of all time, hence my avatar. 1995 Carmageddon - Truly unique...if you know what I mean ;) 1998 Speedbusters - Each lap is different Kudos to your interest in racing games too, bro B)
I'm glad Rollcage Stage II made the list. I was going to mention it if you hadn't. When I bought it, I couldn't play it for years due to errors I'd get every time I tried to install it or play it. And I'm quite certain my desktop Pc was just never good enough. I've owned the PC version for so long, but the first time I got to play it was around 2 to 4 years ago. Also, I loved Splashdown and the giant Octopus that would throw you to land if you drove your Seadoo out too far.
so many great games, love the videos! More great forgotten dos/windows games: Scorcher, Big Red Racing, Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge, Road Rash, Re-Volt
Splashdown is the game that looks to be the most fun so far,and i watched both videos.i love the water dynamics and the acrobatics,it really does remind me of Wave Race which was a game i really enjoyed.
I actually own a copy of Whiplash and wanted to include it...but it runs like CRAP on my DosBox machine. We're talking 5 frames a second or something. But you are correct, the game was really fun back in the day
2 racing games that i grew up with were Megarace with Lance Boil, and the first Rollcage on the PC. Rollcage was one of the games that I ran when i got a voodoo 2 3D accelerator card. :D
I got Downhill Domination and Splashdown when they both came out, and they are both fantastic games that I would recommend to anyone. Another racing game I would recommend is Nascar Rumble. It was the first video game I ever played, and it's one of my favorite games of all time. It takes arcade style racing to a whole new level, and it looks fantastic for a 2000 PS1 game.
You should totally check out Speedboat Attack! It's a classic speedboat combat racing game with shortcuts hidden in stages. A very nostalgic game to me. :)
Wow cool Gran Turismo driving gloves! Love this series of videos. Actually played all these games you showed here as racing games is my among my fave types of games. The last game I played a lot as well. Actually I am going to play it this afternoon as I have it sitting on a shelf as well.
I feel like this game is very underrated and it's Destruction Derby 64. I really like this game visually and alot of people don't like the sound track but I think the soundtrack is catchy and fun!
That Rollcage Stage II reminded me of a game that I played on PSone called Firebugs :) That was one hard game and it so happens that they are made by the same devs
You should look for "Walt Disney World: Magical Racing Tour" on PSX and "Biker Mice From Mars" on SNES. Not too many people like those, but I enjoy them.
I CANT BELIEVE THIS....i loved RnR racing...and then motorhead with its special modes on psx and that futuristic techno beats....and powerslide, i had that game it's was amazing at it;s time... thank you for reminding me of the good old days.
I picked up Downhill Domination late last summer, it's a crazy ass riot. Props for RnR Racing, Powerslide and Splashdown too. I was so bummed when Ratbag went under and we never got Powerslide 2. Speaking of Ratbag, their 2002 World of Outlaws Sprintcars for the PS2 is another overlooked and forgotten gem. Bit of a niche market game and more of a simulation, but it's done very well.
Total Drivin' on the PS1 was a really good game that barely anyone knew, in the US it's called 'Car & Driver Presents: Grand Tour Racing '98', it was the PAL version i always played though.
Motorhead loked pretty tight. Also if you like Rollcage you should try GRIP. It's the same concept but made for today. They cite Rollcage as an inspiration (which is pretty obvious, it's the same concept).
Really cool... Another unique game you've probably played but I enjoy quite a lot is Ignition. I remember having so MUCH FUN with it. I can't stand today's racing games with nitro/cinematic collisions and story. The one I'm looking forward to the most is Carmageddon: Reincarnation (funded through kickstarter) ;)
I recently added that to my Xbox collection, and you're right: Quantum Redshift is excellent! It looks like a cheesy budget title, but it actually kicks ass!
Ey dude, you've got a great channel here. You should try Eliminator Boat Duel on the NES for a forgotten racing game. Loved & hated that game back in the days.
One of my favorite classic racing games is, and will always be "Hot wheels Turbo Racing". I LOVE that game so much. But glad to see Rock N' Roll Racing made that list. I was crossing my fingers hoping you would mention it sometime. Lol
omg, had many flashbacks when watching this. You gotta check out Ballistics for Windows, from the developer GRIN and published by Xicat Interactive. This is the 1st game with the Diesel game engine.
If I had to name a forgotten racing game gem that I really enjoyed it would have to be Road Rash 3D. It doesn't have the greatest reviews but I sure got a kick out of it back in the day. I loved how all the roads were connected and if you strayed off the race path it wouldn't reset you. Yeah, you'd lose the race but it was so fun exploring the world and you didn't see that in many games back in the 90s.
I'm not a big racing fan but one I loved as a child was Radical Psycho Machine Racing for the SNES and Speed Devils for Dreamcast. Speed Devils is one of the only racing games I ever played that you can win opponents cars and then they will be no good through the rest of the game.
theres one racing game where i keep forgetting its name. its an early 3d game, kinda like tube racer or something but earlier and you shot down opponents and trains. one of those futuristic games
Great video man! I'd like to see Destruction Derby Raw in your next vid. Dunno if that one is a forgotten racing game but it's one of my favourite racing games of all time and no one I know have played it.
i had a jetski racing game for the ps2 but im not sure if it was splashdown i do remember putting so many hours into the game and enjoying every bit of it
I really enjoyed the list and I'll have to pick up a couple of these. However, if you ever make a part three I suggest you check out a game called Hi-Octane. I have it for the PC but I believe it also came out on the PS1 and Saturn. It's a great racing game and I think you'd really get a kick out of it.
Awesome list, man. Several I've not played but will now look out for! Loved Motorhead back in the day and Buggy Boy on the Atari ST/Amiga is fantastic.
Strange to see big youtubers on old videos without 1k or more likes for their comments
Soooo have you played them all now ? :D
I am a HUGE fan of Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racer. The Dreamcast version runs like butter and the sense of speed is incredible. It's a great racing game!
Rock and Roll Racing, reminds me of Radical Psycho Machine Racing, which was also published by Interplay. Man, I remember playing Mickey Speedway USA all the time since I was a kid. Love the nostalgia trip, my top 10 forgotten racing games;
Speed Busters - PC
Star Wars Episode 1 Racer - PC
Burnout 1/2 (Before they had takedowns) - Gamecube
Tokyo Highway Challenge - Dreamcast
Micromachines - Gameboy
TOCA Touring Car Championship - Playstation
Street Racing Syndicate - XBOX
Juiced - XBOX
Midtown Madness - PC
Destruction Derby - PC
Mi humble contribution:

Kinetica for PS2 needs recognition, not just because of it's stature, but of the fact that it's engine would go on to power MANY PS2 titles in the console's lifespan.
That's the main one I was actually thinking of too..
Slipstream 5000, Pod and Revolt were pretty fun forgotten racing games
Others have probably mentioned it, but you ought to give Beetle Adventure Racing for N64 a look. Tons of secrets, branching paths... It's amazing! Great series, MJR!
3D Ultra RC Racers Deluxe: Traxxas Edition, Motocross Madness, Crashday, Re-Volt, 4x4 Evo and 1nsane are all good yet forgotten racing games that deserve more attention.
Motorhead on the PSX - it's big "selling point" was that it was natively "high res" which was 50fps when console games were capped at 30fps.
Carmageddon! Also what about vehicular combat? I really think interstate 76 & 82 needs some love.
Loved Carmageddon. :)
I don't think you can consider Carmageddon "forgotten" considering they're still making sequels to that game and all the previous ones are available digitally. The first one has even been ported to Android and iOS.

Have had a copy in my CD wallet for 20 years. Awesome game
I picked up a copy of that game last weekend. Can't wait to give it a go, since so many people recommended it!
Maybe not forgotten, but I loved these DOS racing games in the 90s:
Wrecking Crew, Big Red Racing, Lotus III, Hi Octane.

I swear, my TH-cam Holy Grail would be for MetalJesus to talk about Full Auto. Great combat racing game for the 360 that doesn't get talked about.
Gotta mention Quarantine and Interstate 76, two really, really great games that most people don't know or remember. Total gems!

I agree, you can customize your vehicle so much in Lego Racers. Awesome kart racer that's been forgotten.
I know, right? Downhill Domination is a total hidden gem on the PS2
I glad someone remembers rock and roll racing. I have it on the genesis and it has been one of my favorite games. Sad thing is, I'm a game design student and I brought this classic up and no one in the room had even heard of it except the professor.

i have on my wish list more of this games like Rock'n'roll Racing,Motorhead and Rollcage Stage, this games deserve to be best on way
Was glad to see Slipstream5000 and Powerslide.

One of my favorite racing games were
Lego Racers (N64 / PC)
XGRA Extreme G Racing Association. (GC / PS2)
Hyper Sonic Extreme (PS2)

Great review Metal Jesus. Enjoyed your narration on these classics. I myself is fan of racing games old & new. Among other PC racing classics I enjoyed:
1989 Street Rod - Uber fun
1990 Street Rod 2 - Incredibly hard but challenging at the same time
1989 Test Drive II the Duel - My favorite of all time, hence my avatar.
1995 Carmageddon - Truly unique...if you know what I mean ;)
1998 Speedbusters - Each lap is different
Kudos to your interest in racing games too, bro B)
But you are correct, the game was really fun back in the day
fun fact about Rollcage, the series was created by Psygnosis (aka studio Liverpool), the company responsible for the wipeout series
2 racing games that i grew up with were Megarace with Lance Boil, and the first Rollcage on the PC. Rollcage was one of the games that I ran when i got a voodoo 2 3D accelerator card. :D
I used to play the demo of Rollcage on PS1 so much, really unique and fun game.
Can someone answer me? I'm looking for a car Game when the cars ha names similar to famous rapers, and had weapons on the sides
No
I CANT BELIEVE THIS....i loved RnR racing...and then motorhead with its special modes on psx and that futuristic techno beats....and powerslide, i had that game it's was amazing at it;s time...
thank you for reminding me of the good old days.
F1-Race and Motocross Manians for the gameboy I loved them so much as a kid and still play till today.
I didn't play Splashdown 2 but put hundreds of hours into Splashdown 1 I loved that game the insane air you can get was awesome.
The Midtown madness series are underrated as hell. Totally worth given a try. :)
Another excellent video, man! It'd be so awesome to see some more videos like these for say shooters etc.
So glad you included Buggy Boy... I loved this game as a kid I had it on the Atari ST... and yes, it does still hold up today!!!...
your forgot motocross and monster truck madness ,
mintsiez monster truck madness 2 I had that when I was a kid
I loved original splash down but I did not know they had a sequel, I will have to keep an eye out for it
I remember splashdown! that thing where the first track changes blew my mind when I was younger!
Network Q RAC Rally is a true forgotten gem.
Death Rally by Apogee..
Another good one no one ever mentions, Jak X combat racing, on the ps2
If I had to name a forgotten racing game gem that I really enjoyed it would have to be Road Rash 3D. It doesn't have the greatest reviews but I sure got a kick out of it back in the day. I loved how all the roads were connected and if you strayed off the race path it wouldn't reset you. Yeah, you'd lose the race but it was so fun exploring the world and you didn't see that in many games back in the 90s.
Saturday Night Speedway (PS2) is the best example of a forgotten one I enjoyed.
Downhill domination is great! i just talked about it in one of my videos! It's so GOOD!
Rock and Roll racing looks cool.
Awesome video man. Make more!
San Fransisco Rush plus both sequels hands down the funnest racing games ever.
I'm not a big racing fan but one I loved as a child was Radical Psycho Machine Racing for the SNES and Speed Devils for Dreamcast. Speed Devils is one of the only racing games I ever played that you can win opponents cars and then they will be no good through the rest of the game.
Also the voiceover that plays during the Race is pretty hilarious IMO.
"You came 1st"
This hardly ever happens, you gotta believe me!
Rock 'n Roll Racing is the best! I notice not a lot mention though it is so awesome. Both Buggy Boy and Splashdown also look very awesome. :)
theres one racing game where i keep forgetting its name. its an early 3d game, kinda like tube racer or something but earlier and you shot down opponents and trains. one of those futuristic games
RUSH2,2049 BOTH FOR THE N64,DIDDY KONG RACING,NEED FOR DPEED UNDERGROUND1 AND 2 those are all really good and interesting racing games.
Great video man! I'd like to see Destruction Derby Raw in your next vid. Dunno if that one is a forgotten racing game but it's one of my favourite racing games of all time and no one I know have played it.
Loved Buggy Boy in the arcades and on my C-64. Fun game.
That first game is just like Pure, which you need to try, along with Baja and Paris Dakar rally.
Motorhead probably was the first racing game that I've played ever, back in the days when my pentium 166mhz was something :)
I remember playing the downhill game YEARS ago, but never knew he name of it until I watched this video. Thanks.
i had a jetski racing game for the ps2 but im not sure if it was splashdown i do remember putting so many hours into the game and enjoying every bit of it
t wilson it could have been the first splashdown game on ps2
I really enjoyed the list and I'll have to pick up a couple of these. However, if you ever make a part three I suggest you check out a game called Hi-Octane. I have it for the PC but I believe it also came out on the PS1 and Saturn. It's a great racing game and I think you'd really get a kick out of it.
Thanks for introducing me to Motor Head I just bought the ps1 version of that game and I love it
