The Windows version of NFS: Porsche Unleashed was so beautiful at the time of its release.. It still doesn't look too shabby. I loved the detailed in cabin view of the cars. Definitely one of my all time favorite racers as well.

Porsche Unleashed or Porsche 2000 as it was called in some regions was waaaay ahead of its time in my opinion. The level of physics, graphics and accuracy was great, not to mention the fact that it worked well with generic steering wheels for the PC. Still play it today. I remember buying and repairing cars to sell for cash for hours :p

+Sasheen Dowlath I still play it... it looks amazing on an old comp with a Voodoo card, or two

Still one of the best NFS ever made. Would love a remake with modern graphics - but not by EA, if they'd do a remake, they would make you start with a Dacia and offer every Porsche as a DLC

Porsche Unleahed (Porsche 2000 here in Europe) is my favourite NFS game of all time! It was so amazing back then and showed some power of my fairly decent gaming PC back then to my friends who tend to do gaming on consoles only. it's not surprising it's my favourite, because I'm more of simulation guy. I loved the feature you had to pay your damage you caused by your self, not many racing games ever since has done that.

I got to see Primus live a few years back, when they played the entire Sailing the Seas of Cheese album from beginning to end. It was freakin' awesome!! Great show. Great band!

I can't believe you put NFS: Porsche 2000 (Unleashed in the US) in there. I bought that game when it came out and I was like 11. Back when PC games had nice cardboard boxes and manuals. I love this game. Nowadays it's either all about tuned cars or racing others to the death online. But this was the only game I remember that you could just relax and drive in the sunset while taking in the amazing backgrounds of European landscapes. I am surprised you even knew about it haha.

I love NFS Porsche Unleashed too. Although it was the least popular NFS game for its day, it was a very well-made, high quality racing game. I always liked the fact that Porsche cars were the ONLY cars playable in the game. As a result, the game gave a very deep and complete HISTORY of the Porsche brand which was extremely educational. As a player, you got to learn about and drive all those Porsche cars from the classic 50s era into the modern, high-performance era. Really cool and unique racing experience. For a similar experience, the Ford Racing series games and Corvette both for the PS2 and XBOX are, not quite as good, but worth a look too. Their simplified racing physics make them really fun multiplayer LAN games.

Completely agree with you on NFS Porsche Unleashed (or Porsche 2000 as it was called here). One of my absolute favorite racing titles of all time. Made me learn a lot about Porsche and was so much fun to play. All the tracks were very well designed and very memorable. I had hoped they would do a game like this again for the 50th Anniversary of Lamborghini for example. Never played the PS1 version, but from the footage you showed it looks like a completely different game. Glad I played it on the PC back then.

Racing Video Games I had the PC version and was amazed, the PS edition was a pale imitation unfortunately.
NfS2 was the worst though, and stands as the worst in the series, following up the outstanding original with such utter muck as to be beyond belief. I tried the PC and still own the PS copies, but they are both pants, luckily they must have shot the people responsible because NfSIII was brilliant, overshadowed by the near simultaneous release of Gran Turismo, and the next game NfS:Road Challenge was another stunner.

WOW! POD! I remember they gave me a POD Demo CD when I bought my first Pentium MMX 233MHz in 1997. Too bad I was never able to play the full game, but I loved the demo.
And Porche Unleashed! Wow dude, i have a soft spot for this game. My favorite NFS of all time. Period. Great video, man!

Just reading you reply alone made my day!
I'm actually having a similar issue myself. I was running that game on my brother's computer before he moved out. It's mind boggling since that game is about 15+ years old.
Do what you can (no rush!!). Keep on rocking!

    @PrinceDavid 12 ปีที่แล้ว

I am totally with you on NFS Porsche unleashed. I love how they start you in the early days with the 356 models as you were showing in the video. I never played a realistic racing game before this, and was freaked out by how tail happy the car was. It took me forever to make it through that course you showed. Once I got the hang of it though, the game was MAGIC! Now I love racing sims like Forza and Gran Turismo.

I remember Screamer (its called Bleifuss (Lead Foot) here)... it was one of the first racing games i've ever played....there are more games in the screamer-series and the best i had was "Ignition" or as we call it: Bleifuss Fun. A mix between a fun-racer and an arcade racing game.

I love the history of racing game vids, and these couple forgotten games vids. Thinking back to what I played as a kid I can remember a few games that weren't highlighted in any of these. I remember my favorite to play in the arcade was the ivan stewart, mickey Thompson off road game that had the 3 steering wheel platform. I also loved the bill Elliott nascar challenge for nes. I was also a big spy hunter fan, but I don't know if that fits the "racing" category.

I've got two things I want to share:
    1. P.O.D., Slipstream 5000 and Screamer are all available on GOG for a reasonable price if you're interested.
    2. I have another suggestion for a forgotten racing game and that's eRacer for the PC made back in 2001. It was a PC exclusive made for the sole purpose of giving PC gamers the feeling of playing a console racer. It was fun, but man was it hard!

  • @MightySavagE

there is a perfect reason NFS Porsche got forgotten - it only features the damn Porsche and this brand used to have cars that looked completely alike. Plus, the police chases were only a minor part of the game.

Fantastic video! I remember being really blown away by Screamer when I had my Pentium PC and can recall how much it struggled to run the game with a decent frame rate.
I think this is a wonderful idea for a series of videos. I love learning about games that have passed under the radar as so many of them I've yet to play. I'd really like to see this type of video done about other genres as, although I like them, racing games aren't my favourite. Thanks for the great vid Metal Jesus!

I just discover this video, made 9 years ago, but it's still worthy join the its ensthusiasm for those amazing games. I played POD a lot in one of my first PC setups. I loved those Quake like textures and blocky and heavy feel car designs. The crazy and deadly look scenarios was awesome as well. You mentioned Descent briefly. That was another game I joyed to play sharing the commands with my brother (yes, it's possible, it works and it's fun!). I also played Screamer, but it was the second edition. My most vivid memories of it are the beautiful locations, the cloudy gray skys reflected in the rear wind shield and the almost endless drifts. The races were hard to win, but the replay was such a prize. I miss this feature in later games. And I played Porsche Unleashed in PC too. My favorite NFS at that time was Hot Pursuit, mas PU was also a great game to me for the same reasons you listed.

I agree. R-Factor is also available in a Pro version, but only to professional outfits building simulators worth hundreds of thousands. As in-season testing is banned or very limited it's very important to motorsport-companies, with the F1-teams being the furthest into development.

SHOX, Rally Cross, Rage Racer, Jet Moto, Streak, Test Drive 4, Speed Devils, Beetle Adventure Racing, Vanishing Point, Sega Touring Car, XGRA, Test Drive Unlimited (PC) are some of my favorite racing games that don't seem to get much love these days. I'm happy Porsche Unleashed PC made your list, it is still one of the best NFS games in my book.

I liked the video a lot, but you definitely should have had Powerslide on there. This came out on the PC in 1998 and was all around fantastic. when you were talking about POD in 1997, and going to the Ubisoft website to download additional cars and tracks, saying, "I hadn't played a game quite like that, where it was really well supported after you bought it", and, "of course nowadays it's completely common place" ... I think you forgot to mention the word 'exploited' when talking about the current situation :P

STUNTS! Finally! someone acknowledges this amazing game! I played it as a kid immensely and again literally ten years ago. for hours on end. Such a great track editor and AWESOME cars! I was fan of the Lancia Delta as a U.S. kid when I was 5 because of this game.
By the way, PS1 has a GREAT racing game. It's a CAR-PG. Called Racing Lagoon. More parts then Grand Turismo, but it's a Japanese Import, so you really have to know your chassis codes and engine codes.

  • @BromleyGaffer

Porsche Unleashed was my brother's favourite game. I gravitated more to High Stakes, but you have to appreciate the quality of that game. It definitely had pacing issues though. The evolution mode is great, but it was hard slogging through the older slower cars. It would have been nice to be able to skip and era if you weren't enjoying it. From what I understand, Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends suffered from the same problem where you couldn't progress without beating each level in sequence.

Things that Porsche Unleashed did better than any racing game I've played before or since:
    1. Driving school (aka Factory Driver). There are good driving schools in some other racing games, but Factory Driver is a complete separate single player mode and a whole lot of fun in itself.
    2. Track design. This is the pinnacle of classic NFS "beautiful separate tracks with shortcuts" philosophy. Some of them had so many intersecting alternative paths, that they would probably be more appropriately called "maps" not "tracks" (Auvergne, Corsica...)
    3. Having the most realistic driving physics that could still be comfortably played on a keyboard. There are more realistic racing games, but to play them on a keyboard you either have to be some kind of masochist, or enable so many assists that the game basically plays itself and therefore not fun. NFS5 was realistic, playable on a keyboard and was fun every second you played it.
    4. The whole "single car brand anthology" thing. No other game that attempted this is even close.

POD - The reason it's mostly forgotten is that almost nobody could get it to work! I bought a copy of it probably three years after it was released and I was never able to get it to run. Today you can buy a copy from GOG, which I presume will work, but in the past, POD was notoriously hard to get working.
Screamer - It's a great looking game, but I must not know how to play it properly. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems as if once you go above a certain speed, your steering no longer functions when going into a curve. In real life, if you head into a curve going 200+ MPH and turn the wheel, the nose of your car will start to turn in the direction you chose while momentum will cause the car to skid sideways into the wall. This is what happens in most racing games. In Screamer, if I head into a curve at 200+ MPH and try to turn, the car doesn't respond at all and just slams head-on into the wall. Only at slower speeds can I turn and skid. Go too fast and I just plow straight into the wall.

I always thought Jaguar xj220 on the Mega CD was ace when it came out. Amazing music and fun gameplay. That is my hidden gem.

MJR do you know these 2 games?
Speed Busters/Speed Devils (PC & DC) and Ignition/Fun Tracks (1997)? They're both very arcade-y with great tracks and fun cars. Should be right up your alley

Hey MJR, Redline Racer and Suzuki Alstare Racing were actually very reminicent of the Moto Racer franchise, you should check those out if you haven't already. As for Stunts, have you tried any of the Trackmania games, they're fabulous.

I only had the PS1 version of NFS Porsche Unleashed but, despite the stripped down aspect of it...I loved it... I think between Porsche Unleashed and High Stakes, I spent the most time on those two versions of NFS

Have you ever played Revolt for the PS1/PC/64/DC? such a sick racing game, the spiritual successor Rc revenge for the ps1 is epic also.
