You should include these two: Clive Barker's Undying and Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth. Some of the best horror/shooter games. Also Swat 4 and Hidden and Dangerous 2 are cool stealth/tactical games. Rogue Trooper, XIII, Star Wars Republic Commando and Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter are also favorites of mine.
Richard G , If you still have Rogue Trooper for PS2 and aren't set up for LAN multiplayer over the internet via XLink Kai, there's a fan-made server resurrecting NTSC-U online play at the following DNS address as per PS2OnlineGaming channel and its website: 45 . 7 . 228 . 197 . This and other online titles could use an influx of participants... Other titles have resurrected online play / NETPLAY, no special 3rd party software or hardware requirements.
Excellent work, MJ; I'm loving this series and I hope you make it a running feature of the channel. (the forgotten games series that is, regardless of genre) Go nuts with including Forsaken etc. as they are, by definition, first person shooting games.
+Kevin Bennett But I dont think SoF2 nor Postal 2 are forgotten. I might be wrong but they seem to be pretty famous to me. The only problem with SoF2 is the difficulty to run on modern operational systems, you have to install a lot of patches.
I applaud you for including Shogo and Strife! Totally underrated yet phenomenal games way ahead of their time. For the next part, I'd like to suggest including the Marathon trilogy by Bungie (although nowadays it doesn't seem to be really 'forgotten', more like a 'cult classic')
I think "XIII" Is a game which is quite forgotten. It had great reviews in different magazines but still sales were lower than expected. It does have some cool features and an unusual design.
Would really love a part 3 to this video. So many FPS just fell by the wayside. It's one of my favorite genres and I still discover great ones all the time.
+szkcs soldier of fortune is well known and popular game based on its gore and many people talk about it. i don't think it will ever be forgoten. then there are games like no1 ever talks about like Nocturne. U heard of it?
Descent 1 and 2 are my favorite FPS of all time I highly recommend you guys check out the DXX rebirth mod .It's a MUST play for any old desecnt fan , and its so well done that it holds up perfect vs any modern game.
It's 2018 now, but I'm not seeing a Part 3 or Part 4 when I look up "Forgotten FPS Games - Hidden Gems" here on TH-cam. Dude, you GOTTA get around to doing more entries if you haven't done 'em yet - this _is_ a great series! If you do any future entries, make sure to check out _Powerslave/Exhumed_ (for DOS and PSOne/Saturn.... though there's an unofficial "EX" version floating around on the web nowadays from the same dude at NightDive Studios who did those amazing remasters of _Turok 1 + 2_ and _STRIFE)_ and Insomniac's _Disruptor_ for the PSOne. There's also _Darkwatch: Curse of the West_ for PS2 and Xbox - I remember that being pretty rad back in the day, but even back then, it pretty obviously was a _Halo_ clone (down to the jump physics) with this awesome Gothic/Western skin draped over it. That's pretty ironic they cloned _Halo's_ feel so well since _Darkwatch_ was High Moon's first game, but nowadays they're just working with Bungie on _Destiny_ :P Also, there's a game from Atlus called _Maken X_ for the Dreamcast - I dunno if I'd call it a gem, but it definitely is in the same space as _Breakdown_ here since it's just really unique, being a first person sword-action slasher thing from some of the people behind some _Shin Megaten/Persona_ games including character designer, Kazuma Kaneko. Personally, I got no problem with the occasional Descent/Vehicle-based first person shooter being thrown in there either.
Hey man, all your forgotten and hidden gems videos are awesome as I have over 1000 games and counting and you truly deliver at least a majority of games I don't know much about yet, which is hard to find. As for this continuing series I recommend POWERSLAVE for the Saturn, SHADOW WARRIOR for the PC (I know you mentioned it), CHEX QUEST (goofy I know), CORRIDOR 7 for PC, REDNECK RAMPAGE series, BLAKESTONE for PC, HEXEN and more. Keep up the great work, man!
I was waiting whole vid if Shogo will he there:) Anyway, blood is for sure not forgotten- actually its a cult classic. Thanx for reminding singularity though - played it and forgot about it- truly forgotten gem for me:)
A PS1 game I loved was called DESCENT it was kind of a FPS but you floated around. It was pure fun with sometimes massive areas and tunnels. Think FPS but you can go anywhere in the room. Cool weapons and missiles. Flying through the tunnels was awesome. Boss battles. Man I wish I could play it now lol. The enemies were challenging. I think there was sequel but I didn't play it. Anyway check it out sometime.
My neighbor and I hooked up by modem and played the crap out of descent 1 and 2 for years on the pc 2 great games.... www.gog.com/game/descent_1_descent_2
You reference parts 3 and 4 at the end of this video. Are you still planning on doing them? I would love to see more games I used to play back in the 90s like Sin and Disruptor featured and also discover others I might not know about!
Exhumed/Powerslave on the Sega Saturn (PSX and PC too) is a completely forgotten FPS. It's really unique in the fact that the level design is rather Zelda like, and also because the Saturn version got the most TLC. It's still rather stunning today, and the atmosphere is killer. I'd love to see you cover it. It's brilliant.
Just a random sign in the game that says "Classical Amish Death Metal". I guess in the future, the Amish people will throw down their hammers and pitchforks...and pick up electric guitars for some angry ROCK!
Nice to see Strife getting some love. From what I remember when the game was released it was quite obscure even then, but what a great game to have played at the time. I remember my friend spawning a ton of friendlies in the main town only to make a save where he would attack and kill all of them..
Also, Shogo: Mobile Division Armor looks amazing, I want to try it out! It sort of reminded me of "Maken X meets Omikron: The Nomad Soul" but with far more superior level design. Awesome list, thanks Metal Jesus!
you game me a good reason to find that "Timesplitters" game I never heard of! seems really good, and most of the other games you mentioned were good tood, I played Shogo a lot in its time but I have to leave it because I think I stucked in some level and coudn't find the way to continue, but I enjoyed it anyway. Great video as always man.
Tone is dry? I'm using a pretty nice Audio Technica condensor microphone, but the recording space is just a small room. No reverb or anything like that. I could probably add some EQ around the 100 Hz range, if that is what you are referring to.
I'm glad to see some love for Breakdown. It is very underrated in my opinion and I simply loved it. It takes quite awhile to get used to the boxing mechanic, but eventually it just feels really good. Most of the enemies later in the game are immune to bullets, so it is strictly hand-to-hand for most of the game. Adjusting to the controls does take quite a bit though. BTW, I have Shogo but have never really played it. I'll try to bump that up on my "play" list.
I couldn't agree more with your comments about Future Perfect. I did a lot of watching for the new Timesplitters game a couple years back, but was very disappointed when it was delayed and then forgotten. It is definitely in my top 5 favorite games ever!
MJR, I've to say I'm digging these videos, there are some really interesting games that I didn't know about. I personally have been gaming for maybe 15 years and as such I missed many of these games so it has been a really fun to see the games that have influenced so many other games even if only in small ways. As for adding games that aren't "true" fps games, I would say please add them, Descent is a great game that not many people might know about from that era, I only found out 2 years ago.
I love TimeSplitters, I remember spending hours playing multiplayer with some friends on the 3rd one. I would love it if a 4th actually came out. I'm with you on that, its a day one purchase if it ever did happen.
Love the video. Thought I was the only person who knew about Strife. Also, Shogo: Mobile Armor Division is on Good Old Games for $5.99, so no reason for anyone to pass that one up. Did not play the Time Splitters games back in the day, but you got me wanting to pick them up.
Heavy Gear I and II were amazeballs. HGII had a great variety of missions, including stealth inside a huge mech. Worth a try if you can track 'em down.
Some more great forgotten shooters: AvP2, Vietcong, MoH: Allied Assault, HL: Opposing Force, Tribes: Vengeance, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, Bulletstorm, Soldier of Fortune
Shogo was one of my favorite games for multyplayer. It was a real blast the weapons, the Mechs, the speed.Everything in this game was perfect. For the next FPS video I would like to see Renegade (Red Alert FPS) and Shadow Warrior (just because of the Atome Bomb Weapon)
One of the last lines in Shogo's long ass outro credits: "Did you know you can speed up the credits by pressing shift?" Best insults and teasing in any credits ever.
btw, Shogo's Monolith Productions also did the No One Lives Forever games mentioned in part one as well as the highly underrated Tron 2.0. All great PC games of that era.
Enjoying these vids. Black looked nice but was a very one note game, Timesplitters FP on the other hand has one of the best campaigns of last gen, short but very sweet. Definitely include the non trad first person games in this series, like Descent etc, also maybe other first person styles like Kings Field or Echo Night Beyond. It'd be cool to have some third person games that can be played as first person like The Suffering or Hitman as well.
Excellent overview! I really wasn't expecting for you to revisit this topic so soon. If you are still looking for suggestions, I will toss out Darkwatch on the XBOX (PS2 as well, but haven't played it personally). Great mostly DOOM-styled game that's barely talked about these days. As far as Descent, I feel it is most certainly a first person shooter. Sure, there is 360 degree movement, but it's run 'n gun, classic mid-'90s FPS action all the way! :)
Metal, Timespitters 4 was actually in development but is was cancelled. Also, the Multiplayer is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC with many stages, smooth, controls, weapons variety, 60 fps with no slowdown and tons of goofy characters. Many players hacked a LAN Line to continue to play online after the support shut down because the online was so good. This game's multiplayer stands the test of time and can easily compete with modern in term of pure fun. Take Care! :)
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division is a great game. I remember playing the hell out of it when it came out. Going to revisit it and see how it stands the test of times. Thanks for reminding me of this one!
Keep them coming Metal J, this is kind of what late night tv used to be like in the 90'sin the UK! You might say Bodycount from 2011 is the sequel to Black, but it felt a little cheap and messy and didn't sell at all. I tried to get into Timesplitters over the years but I never liked the art style and the controls feel floaty to me. Been playing Doom2 lately on 360... FPS perfection!
I'm totally with you on why Black was forgotten, I don't really enjoy new-gen FPS games myself, but I'd like to point out: it's kind of ironic that Black's story and level design was / is considered "forgettable" while the Call of Duty series is still thriving on sales for essentially doing the same exact thing, 10 years later. It almost sounds like as if Black came up with the modern AAA FPS genre and then Activision game and said: "Good for you, but we'll take it from here." by making little to no changes in the gameplay & effects, only improving the graphics and marketing it better.
i used to love the level editor on Timesplitters: Future Perfect, made so many great levels to play with my mate and bots, wish this game would come to the PS2 Classics on PSN.
Actually, you don't need an actual Windows PC at all. DOSBOX runs on OSX...but what's even better is a free program called BOXER. It's drag & drop for all those old PC games. Google and download it. You'll be amazed!
breakdown is one of the most interesting games I've played. I've never seen a game that had such an awesome sense of immersion. The graphics and music really just add to the awesome experience. The gameplay may be slightly flawed, but its too interesting to pass up
Don't forget about Timeshift. It wasn't a perfect game by any means, but clearing out a room with a shotgun in slow motion is worth a mention alone. And let's not forget the fantastic multiplayer.
Metal Jesus you rock dude! your videos are awesome and i love them. I suggest a part 3 because i think you miss a few ones like: Shadow Warrior, Rise of the Triad, System Shock and STALKER, keep up the good work man.
Just putting it out there: You can get Blood and Shogo off GOG.com for $6 each, all fully patched with support added for modern OSes, with GOG recently branching into getting a bunch of their games onto Mac. That said, I found you through RetrowareTV, and I'm loving your channel!
One of my old favorites was the Soldier of Fortune PC game. It's the first game I remember having the ability to dismember enemies, shoot them in the legs, etc.
SHOGO! My friend had this game back in the day bundled with Septera Core, I thought it was amazing but alas it was forgotten in my childhood. I really gave them credit for making a game at the time that had so much of what we wanted from the japanese anime craze, that we weren't getting from other developers, I'd love to see an in depth on that one..
Breakdown was an amazing game, hard but tons of fun. Timespitters future perfect was lots of fun too, I spent so much time making my own levels in that game.
i applaud timesplitters in this list. a fricken fantastic game, my favorite of all time. It's a shame that no one has heard of it and its legendary mapmaker
Great series so far. I hope you do more. A couple forgotten FPS games that I love would be Area 51 and XIII, both for PS2 although I believe they were on other consoles from the same time period. I enjoy them both immensely. Area 51 got a pseudo-sequel but I've never given it a try. XIII was just really beautiful with it's cel shaded graphics. Oh, and both games are voiced over by David Duchovny. lol
I always wanted to play Shogo, but my PC couldn't do it. As for Black, I remember it looking very pretty, but it was too hard to be fun. There's a game on Xbox 360 called Legendary that has an awesome premise (Pandora's Box is opened and turns New York into a fantasy world nightmare), but the gameplay was poorly handled. A real missed opportunity.
Really liked the first two episodes! Great selection. Such fond memories...and a few interesting suggestions, especially "Strife" and "Singularity". I should definitely check those out. Oh and I think you could include those games that are a little off the genre standards, like "forsaken", because you´re still kinda in first person view, and you shoot at enemies...first.person.shooter.kinda. ;-)
Black is unjustly neglected. It's an awesome game I played just a couple of years ago on PS2. Eagerly waiting for a sequel or even a HD release with trophy support.
Man i LOVED Shogo. I miss that late 90's early 2000's era of PC gaming. I hope more people discover the original Thief PC games now that there's a new one. Cause those were amazing games.
I feel a bit like a necromancer commenting on such an old video, but another great forgotten fps is Timeshift on Xbox 360. The MC has a suit which allows you to slow, reverse, or fast forward time, all with a pretty great selection of guns and gory fun.
If it's 1st person and there is a weapon you have to shoot, put it in the list! I really enjoy these videos, you always know some hidden gems and interesting less talked about games. Do you know if any of your videos have a list of any of your favorite Sierra games? It would be excellent to hear your opinions on that!
Tron 2.0 is a game I have tried to get into twice now and I always get stuck a couple hours in. So annoying...but it's very well made! Maybe I just need to suck it up and use a walkthrough :)
"XIII" (13) (2003, cell-shaded stealth shooter), "Hexen: Beyond Heretic" (1995, fantasy themed, Doom engine), "Tribes: Vengeance" (2004, sci-fi jetpack action with single-player campaign), "Penumbra" series ("Penumbra: Overture" 2007, "Penumbra: Black Plague" 2008, not shooters at all, but featuring stealth & advanced physical interaction with the environment in a survival horror setting. Hopefully not forgotten yet, but also not known enough) and, yes, System Shock (1&2).
I'm not sure I'd call it completely forgotten because it was popular (albeit, not as much as Halo, or, because it's a James Bond game, Goldeneye) in it's time, but I really like Nightfire on the GameCube (also on PS2 and XBOX, with a separate version on PC). It was an FPS that stuck pretty well to what a James Bond movie was like back in the day (at least, when Brosnan was the leading man for Bond), although it wasn't perfected until the series went third person again with Everything or Nothing.
I loved shogo! Took me years to get a computer that would run it back in the day… But once I played it I knew it was everything I wanted it to be. Bloody as hell, first person shooter to mech rampage, and you’re right it was surprisingly funny
Blood is fuckin' awesome. I am so glad you mentioned it. The game never got the recognition it deserved and it still doesn't get much attention. I love the main character, the atmosphere and level design. The music is also top notch. I seriously recommend this game to everyone. You don't get fast paced FPS' like this nowadays.
Shogo yes!! Was hoping this one made the list. I can say with authority that multiplayer and single player in this game were a total blast. One of the best FPS's of the late 90s; it's a pity Monolith didn't redo this one.
Great video! Like always! I think you should include the games you mentioned at the end simply because they are first person and shooting is heavily involved :D People don't think about them these days since war games is the 'fad' these days... and if they include zombies, it's a sure win in the marketing department.
If you can, please send the links to part 3 and 4 (if you made them...hopefully you did because these are awesome)...Ugh, I'm going to ask the question that's been on my mind for a while....how young are you Metal Jesus? Lol, I look at you and I see something I would want to be in my future: Happy and young at heart, love your energy, reviews, even the crazy junk food cooking...lol. Thank you for always putting a smile on my face and showing me over and over again...nerdism is the fountain of youth. :)
I really enjoyed your list, and I so agree about Shogo, so disappointing they never released a sequel. Heretic is the FPS game I have been dying for a remake of the most, im not sure if its a forgotten game though. Some games i loved but not sure if they need to be on your list are Witchhaven, Corridor 7, Blake Stone, Cyber mage, Powerslave, Darkwatch, Advent rising, Kingpin. Also, Forsaken was amazing so yes please feature it along with Descent :)
time splitters looks awesome in your video, is that an XBOX version? because I'm playing PS2 version of this game right now and it doesn't look as good as yours
nwhat31 probably because the gamecube spec wise was on par with the original Xbox, it had a slightly faster CPU but the Xbox had a slightly stronger GPU. plus PS2 was a nightmare to code for.
Pathways Into Darkness is one I'd pick for the list. It was one of Bungie's earliest games, well before Marathon and Halo. It probably isn't all that well known because it was only on the Macintosh in 1993.
Great video, again I will recommend Hexen 2. A great fps with some rpg elements, released in 1997 on a modified Quake engine, developed by Raven software.
Strife was great but it had so many small things wrong with it. The most gaping problem is you can kill key characters without knowing their importance and consequently get stuck in the game.
Singularity was a great game, such a pleasant surprise to play. Story was amazing, reminded me of bioshock
I love the Timesplitter series
I'd add Soldier of Fortune 1 & 2 as forgotten games.
SoF Multiplayer was so fucking good.
@@lakabaka And no game has had that level of gore in MP since :(

Take Care! :)
Man I am so glad you featured Shogo, I was a huge fan of this game. I want to go back and beat it someday.
I love TimeSplitters and Black. They're my favorite FPS games on the PS2.
Singularity is pretty badass, too.
I have a picture in my gaming area of 'Blood' that was in an old GamePro magazine. I loved that magazine...
i used to love the level editor on Timesplitters: Future Perfect, made so many great levels to play with my mate and bots, wish this game would come to the PS2 Classics on PSN.
Actually, you don't need an actual Windows PC at all. DOSBOX runs on OSX...but what's even better is a free program called BOXER. It's drag & drop for all those old PC games. Google and download it. You'll be amazed!
Always LOVE seeing "BLOOD"!!!!! Goes back to when I was 13. :) It also had a Type O Negative music video built in.
breakdown is one of the most interesting games I've played.
So many games I loved in these 2 videos... Blood being pretty close to my favorite mindless fps ever.
Blood and Blood 2 are amazing games. Glad you got that in there.
I LOVED BREAKDOWN!!!! so underrated!
yep
i applaud timesplitters in this list. a fricken fantastic game, my favorite of all time.
Oh, and both games are voiced over by David Duchovny. lol
Glad to have found your channel, there were lots of hidden gems I've never heard about till I watched your vids, keep up the good work ;D
A real missed opportunity.
you can include whatever game you want its always great to see games that we don't know
Really liked the first two episodes! Great selection. Such fond memories...and a few interesting suggestions, especially "Strife" and "Singularity". I should definitely check those out.
Oh and I think you could include those games that are a little off the genre standards, like "forsaken", because you´re still kinda in first person view, and you shoot at enemies...first.person.shooter.kinda. ;-)
Thanks! I love food (and beer) too... but now I just don't have everything I want, every single day :)
So glad you included Black. I played the heck out of that game, but nobody I talk to seems to remember it, which is sad IMHO.
Black is unjustly neglected. It's an awesome game I played just a couple of years ago on PS2. Eagerly waiting for a sequel or even a HD release with trophy support.
Kudos on mentioning Strife, it was criminally overlooked by gamers in 1996. And yes, Descent and Forsaken count as FPS in my book.
Black was super awesome for the time, excellent looking and sounding game.
Tron 2.0 is a game I have tried to get into twice now and I always get stuck a couple hours in. So annoying...but it's very well made! Maybe I just need to suck it up and use a walkthrough :)
"XIII" (13) (2003, cell-shaded stealth shooter),
"Hexen: Beyond Heretic" (1995, fantasy themed, Doom engine),
"Tribes: Vengeance" (2004, sci-fi jetpack action with single-player campaign),
"Penumbra" series ("Penumbra: Overture" 2007, "Penumbra: Black Plague" 2008, not shooters at all, but featuring stealth & advanced physical interaction with the environment in a survival horror setting. Hopefully not forgotten yet, but also not known enough)
and, yes, System Shock (1&2).
Watching the show on Fridays while having dinner as I always do. Great retrogaming stuff. Good times.
sierras time shift is awesome as well
Blood is fuckin' awesome.
Holy crap I completely forgot about Strife. I used to play that at my buddys house back in 7th grade. That game is the shit.
Great video! Like always!
I think you should include the games you mentioned at the end simply because they are first person and shooting is heavily involved :D
People don't think about them these days since war games is the 'fad' these days... and if they include zombies, it's a sure win in the marketing department.
I really loved Singularity and feel it needs more loving.
I look forward to part 3 if you do it. There are so many great games to pick.
One of the best FPS I ever played is Black. It's beautiful, has destructive environment and superb sound effects. Very fun.
time splitters looks awesome in your video, is that an XBOX version? because I'm playing PS2 version of this game right now and it doesn't look as good as yours
nwhat31 probably because the gamecube spec wise was on par with the original Xbox, it had a slightly faster CPU but the Xbox had a slightly stronger GPU. plus PS2 was a nightmare to code for.
Great video, I subscribed because I love the way you make these videos.
Maybe Tekwar is something for the next part ;)
Thanks for mentioning black I loved that game!
I think you're channel is the best :D brings back so much memories of gaming long gone :D
Pathways Into Darkness is one I'd pick for the list. It was one of Bungie's earliest games, well before Marathon and Halo. It probably isn't all that well known because it was only on the Macintosh in 1993.
Man, I played Black and Blood 2 over and over both to completion. Many times. Black still holds up to todays fps games
Great series. Singularity is the most underrated game this gen. It's fantastic.
Great video, again I will recommend Hexen 2. A great fps with some rpg elements, released in 1997 on a modified Quake engine, developed by Raven software.
I played Breakdown when it first came out and was blown away... Such a good game, so sad we disnt get anything similar for a long time
Strife was great but it had so many small things wrong with it. The most gaping problem is you can kill key characters without knowing their importance and consequently get stuck in the game.
