Meanwhile I came down here to say that you missed the math on cranial at 14:50 . If you cast the plating and equip on an ornithopter you hit for 9 putting them to 7. You still have four blockers and 5 life. They had 5 creatures that could attack with the weakest being 1 power. They would have to draw a kill spell for your thopter or a way to buff their lieutenant by 3 or they lose on the swingback. Their board was already so tall, there was no card in your deck that could effectively block or remove more than one champion. Your only chance at winning was to try and be faster and you had a card that put them on a 2 swing clock, but you chose to give them an extra turn. There was also a point in the death shadow match at the start where you chose to discard plating over thought monitor. I *know* card draw is drilled into your head as always better, but card draw value is dependent on what you want/need to draw and the odds of drawing it. You're playing a very aggressive deck and you just discarded your most agro card... What could you have drawn that would have been worth more than the eleven power on board the plating represented? I do know this was a moot point because they had the second discard effect and you lost the monitor too, but it still hurt my soul a bit to see you undervalue the plating that much.
Seth i wanna see 2 things very very soon pretty please brother!!! I really appreciate the little popups of a card when Seth mentions it as a theoretical. It looked a little BM when he said "If they play ghostly prison we scoop it up" and then the exact printing that later gets played popped up, but that was just funny.
15:00 Plating + Equipd + attack with orni = 9 Damage Opp turn: Block with 4 creatures Own turn: play thought monitor + orni + Attack with equipded orni = 7 damage = win
Honestly, this is probably the deck I'm most excited is coming back from the dead. It always bothered me that the old Arcbound Ravager deck was called Affinity despite playing zero cards with Affinity. This on the other hand, THIS is Affinity. :)
Both scoops were too early. Stony silence is not game over for affinity, only the lands and playing have activated abilities. Still worth seeing if they had an answer to frogmits and monitors
@@marshall4439 can't make blue mana, no springleaf drums either, so no thought monitors no thoughtcast, just gotta hope to draw enough froggy boys, sojourners and enforcers.
16:30 if you're casting two frogmites in the same turn, and the second one won't be free, make blinkmoth a creature using its own mana. Could frogmite for 1, then for 0, then thoughtcast off of drum instead of just double frog
I've been playing the blasts version of affinity for a couple years and I would say running 4x Galvanic blast instead of welding jar, or running Galvanic blasts in the board would do this deck a lot of good. That humans match could've used some burn.
My brother and I were having a debate during MH2 spoilers whether Modern Affinity was dead without Mox Opal. Nice to see it bouncing back with new tech.
The scary thing is this deck isnt running urza's saga. Urza saga is legitimately one of the scariest cards in modern now. Double karnstruct on a land is scary powerful with potential to pick up a lot of hate pieces that mess with a lot of archtypes or protects your aggro pieces.
Well there is not much « new tech ». This Classic Affinity build uses some of the new cards, but the plays are obvious. I just do not know if it is fast enough against the other aggro decks. This is not 2004 folks. Magic has evolved 10-folds since then.
OMG, I don't know if I'm going to be able to finish watching this video... round 1, and you are already undervaluing the pressure Cranial Plating puts on opponents. As an OG Standard Affinity player, it's wrecking my soul to see you prioritize Thoughtcast over getting the plating equipped and finishing your opponent.
Yeah, affinity is an aggro deck that kills the oppomemt on turn3 with some luck. If you have an option that deals damage to face, its probably the right one.
Affinity being good again and being *actual* affinity makes me happy. To be clear, I've never played with it, but I love that it's back and seems like a sign of format health. Plus, I play white and run stony silence.
35:30 « your opponent plays Stony Silence on Turn-2, you kind of lose the game. » If it *resolves* , then yes you do. Also if your opponent plays a Root Maze on Turn-1, you kind of lose the game. I recommend that you ditch the Wielding Jars: They do not help you win, and there are too many good permanents now (2021) that bypasses jars but are still very painful for Affinity to « fight through ». Cheers & Happy Gaming!
you can use summoning sick creatures with springleaf drum! i think i noticed a couple of times where you could have played something with a drum but didn't, particularly in match 5. at 32:34 you could have played the cranial plating out and a couple of turns before that you could have played another thoughtcast.
also after animating the nexus he could have left the nexus there and use the enforcer + nexus creature to instant speed the plating onto the monitor that was not blocked using both drums.
Ahaha! Then read my top comment on side-boarding. With Urza’s Saga (the card) in Modern, you should expect a *lot* of hate versus artifact builds. I am running four Root Maze (main deck). Cheers & happy gaming.
Cute! Keep in mind that white runs Stony Silence and green runs Root Maze main deck. If you want to bring Classic Affinity to a Modern tournament, I recommend having access to Islands or rare untapped lands that produce blue for Annul (four sideboard). Otherwise, expect major disappointments. (Times have changed a lot since 2004 when the Affinity Mechanic was made: the creature decks are much better and they can kill pretty much as fast or faster than Affinity.) Cheers & happy gaming! :-)
There were a couple of games where I would prioritize cast + equip plating then playing the thought-spells next turn instead, also you can beat ghostly with plating or nettlecyst, but man Stony or Karn TGC is instant scoop most of the time.
He's played so many combo or control decks that "card draw is always better" is etched into his DNA at this point. In this agro deck, what is he trying to draw INTO? either removal for a blocker or a threat. But he already has evasive creatures, so the plating is the *best* threat he could draw if he just did the math to check how much power it was adding each time.
34:15 "What have we learned this week about REAL Affinity?" Watching Seth play it will give Affinity players aneurysms. But, seriously, I appreciate the content! Thought Monitor and new (read: not yet banned) artifact lands were a great pickup from MH2 for an archetype that's been dead for so long.
@@TheChibidono he vastly underestimated cranial plating in nearly every matchup. If he'd slowed down enough to do the math it was sitting at +6 to +10 power and constantly representing a 2 swing clock. With how many cheap creatures he could dump out that would have let him be a turn or two faster and go "under" the other agro decks like humans.
Agree. Seth had the win on the board. He tends to play « automatically » sometimes without really thinking about *all* his options. Enchantress can no nothing against a cranial-plated flyer.
There were a lot of missed opportunities to play spells, either with Springleaf Drum or just paying a generic mana to get an affinity snowball started. It speaks to the power of the deck, really, although Seth also benefits from his opponents not knowing what decks he's playing
Jim Davis did a version of this. I liked his inclusion of vault skirg over enforcer for more evasion and a little lifegain. He also used paradise mantle over bauble which I think is correct. You already have 4 thoughtcast and you have to sac bauble which reduces affinity which seems......bad? I also like one shadowspear with saga as a 1 of as a tutor target.
Yeah, Stony is Brutal. You could get there with attacking, but that plan needs your opponent to not have ghostly prison or any other kind of interaction.
that player posted their deck somewhere here. they were on 4 sterling grove, 3 solitary confinement and one stony silence mainboard. in addition to 12 enchantress effects. there was nearly no way seth kills them through a ghostly prison before they assemble some combination of cards that completely shuts seth down. and while seth didn't know that exact list, he knew they were on enchantress. so he knew that they would start drawing lots of cards very soon and would likely pack various silver bullets in the main because sterling grove. like yeah it was an early scoop. but unless the opponent just completely stopped playing the game the chances of winning were still mostly nonexistent
I was pretty amazed with this deck man, it just works so well! Here in Europe prices are much lower so I can pick this nice pile of cards for less than 30€ or so, so definetly trying this one out.
Was 21:38 a punt? You had 3 artifacts so you could have played frogmite for 1 and Thoughtcast but instead you did nothing and passed the turn. I guess you might have been trying to wait to be explosive and not let them kill or bounce frogmite with reflector mage before your big turn but it feels like it would have been correct mana efficiency wise
@15:26 you scooped here, but I think you can just chump all the champions, untap, play Thought monitor, and only need to be able to play one more artifact, and equip plating, to be totally winning. Which seems very likely? Am I missing something?
Having played affinity in pauper for a bit, I will say finding room for galvanic blast is definitely worthwhile. It gives you a lot of reach.. esp in this build where you have more card draw. You could pretty reliably threaten lethal when you're opponent is at 8 and 12 wouldn't be hard. At the least you could consider replacing vapor snag in the board and bring it in against stony silence or heavy removal decks (eg when the plating plan doesn't look so hot). Modern does have creatures with more than 4 toughness that need to be dealt with so I understand why you'd go for vapor snag but imagine the humans match up.. permanent removal is much better than giving them another etb. And galvanic blast practically beats death's shadow single handedly
There was a dimir and a grixis version of tgis deck back in the day and both would routinely win turn 2 with arcbound ravager and disciple of the vault it was wprse than eldrazi
Do you think Affinity Tezzeret is worth an inclusion in the board along with disenchant against Enchantress? Draining them out with disenchant to remove stony silence? Or are we just so aggro we will never need it otherwise?
I think it's time for an Update on this list! It's been 3 years and I need a list for the next 3 months. My LGS is having an RCQ each month and I want to take a Budget Affinity list to them!
21:30 Oh no! You didn't play Frogmite and then Thoughtcast. You'd even still have a mana to cast Thought Monitor in the event Thoughtcast drew you two 0 mana creatures, which would give you Myr Enforcer.
I think that this deck should have access to Ensoul Artifact (At least in the sideboard). Having the option to produce 5/5 indestructible creatures might be clutch in a few match-ups.
oh yes! Just as regular beatdown decks, it is always dealing the last couple of points of damage which ends up being the hardest (particularly against control).
idk about scooping that first game against Humans. he had to block 4 creatures, which would bring him down to 7 artifacts equipping Plating onto a flier is 9 damage, since they cannot block it currently the Thought Monitor in hand is the tenth damage, draw for turn and the two off the etb would require literally only a single castable/playable artifact, and let's just say, odds were good for that, and he would have had the 11 damage in the air...
A non budget version could include Urza's Saga and Inkmoths over Blinkmoths. Concerning sideboard, how about Galvanic Blast over Vapor Snag? Also, I'm thinking about some cool "main finisher", like Broodstar (which is suboptimal, but I love it so much ahahah)
I dont think this deck cares for urza's saga. Its not an artifact, I don't want to spend 3 mana to make a body and searching for a 1 drop on turn 3 just feels suboptimal
@@drakeconsumerofsoulsandche4303 why 3? You’re right, it’s not an artifact, but it allows you to put onto the battlefield two big/big constructs, each costing 2 mana. Also, on the third turn it allows you to search for a welding jar or a thopter, based on your needs, which is a juicy bonus!
Modern is looking pretty good now! Lots of diversity and most of the decks I see Seth play against aren't degenerate combos! I'm curious about inkmoth nexus and/or ravager. I'm assuming they don't fit in the budget, but I wonder if ravager is better in the Nettlecyst slot? It's cheaper to cast and serves a similar purpose. Inkmoth might be good as an alternative win-con, and a way around things like ghostly prison because one attack by a pumped inkmoth will often end the game.
I’ve been trying to find a comprehensive thought monitor affinity list and glad to see this today. I think I’m gonna put some glimmervoids in and maybe get some ravagers. Not sure what other improvements (apart from the to-be-banned urza’s saga) I’d need
We should have cast the Frogmite ;)

the Thought Monitor in hand is the tenth damage, draw for turn and the two off the etb would require literally only a single castable/playable artifact, and let's just say, odds were good for that, and he would have had the 11 damage in the air...
Would you consider ravager and steel overseer for this?
Yes! Also Power Depot works with ravager because it is a Modular land.
I think this could use ginger brute and maybe Bomat Courier for even more cards and evasion.
What do you take out?
A non budget version could include Urza's Saga and Inkmoths over Blinkmoths. Concerning sideboard, how about Galvanic Blast over Vapor Snag?
Also, I'm thinking about some cool "main finisher", like Broodstar (which is suboptimal, but I love it so much ahahah)
My first ever FNM win was with Broodstar affinity when Mirrodin came out. There's definitely a special place in my heart for that card.
@@waynetrout4921 glad I’m not the only one ❤️
I dont think this deck cares for urza's saga. Its not an artifact, I don't want to spend 3 mana to make a body and searching for a 1 drop on turn 3 just feels suboptimal
@@drakeconsumerofsoulsandche4303 why 3? You’re right, it’s not an artifact, but it allows you to put onto the battlefield two big/big constructs, each costing 2 mana. Also, on the third turn it allows you to search for a welding jar or a thopter, based on your needs, which is a juicy bonus!
@@MaskeJ I'm counting it as 3, since you have to tap the land itself plus two other sources.
Any argument for playing Echoing Truth in the sideboard for things like Ghostly Prison?
Modern is looking pretty good now! Lots of diversity and most of the decks I see Seth play against aren't degenerate combos!
I'm curious about inkmoth nexus and/or ravager. I'm assuming they don't fit in the budget, but I wonder if ravager is better in the Nettlecyst slot? It's cheaper to cast and serves a similar purpose. Inkmoth might be good as an alternative win-con, and a way around things like ghostly prison because one attack by a pumped inkmoth will often end the game.
surprised Seth didn't pull out the hypergeometric calculator on that humans start. It was, roughly, a 1 in 2,500 chance
might make a modern artifacts deck because of this
Ahh yessssss!!! I wonder if we can still put in some Inkmoth Nexuses and Arcbound ravagers
Ah, the beautiful nightmare of playing Magic outside of our school in 2004.
Affinity, there is only so much fun you can have in magic, so we must make sure opponent doesn't have any
If you had to make a non-budget version what would you replace?
Not gonna lie, I kinda want to build affinity now. What about playing more white/blue to splash some better proactive sideboard cards?
Great deck great gameplay!
I’ve been trying to find a comprehensive thought monitor affinity list and glad to see this today. I think I’m gonna put some glimmervoids in and maybe get some ravagers. Not sure what other improvements (apart from the to-be-banned urza’s saga) I’d need
Inkmoth nexus in addition/instead of blinkmoth. this gives you an even faster clock with cranial
Obviously not a budget include, but would Amulet of Vigor be worth the add for the tap lands?
14:55 That Cranial Plating draw WAS enough, you just prioritized card draw over raw power. This video is killing me, lol.
Urza's saga from MH2 makes affinity way stronger also treasure vault from AFR is a great add .. IF you are not worried about the budget
