    I kinda love how Seth is "secretly" WAY faster than a lot of his opponents. Like, we're talking about a difference of 10+ minutes on the clock that gets hidden by editing.

      In fairness to his opponents, I'd be in the tank for a while too if I Thoughtseize'd and saw a Seth Spicy Meatball! If I saw a Whitemane Lion I would absolutely assume there's a combo kill somewhere... right?

      Most of my decks are cheap, I have revised duals collecting dust and some even more rare and costly cards, but mono and having sets of 4 make it much more reliable. Normally after turn 4 you are dead or I am. Unless white I can still rage against your life gain and walk away with the win.

    Smallpox actually makes a lot of sense with reanimator. The opponent was putting in effort to essentially keep the game on turns 1-3, and being able to reanimate for cheap with persist while also keeping your opponent stripped for resources is neat synergy.

    You really need to up the Modern budget to $150. The Shadowlands go from useless to great as soon as you add Shocklands to the mix. You drastically improve consistency and you're still saving for a whole other deck by not playing Fetchlands.

    • @MTGGoldfish
      @MTGGoldfish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      There's probably a pretty solid argument for increasing the budget a big based on how much deck prices have increased. We've been using the same $100 budget for 6 years, while Modern deck prices have increased a lot during that time.

    • @Jaryth000

      @@MTGGoldfish I suppose even “budgets” are not immune to inflation. I honestly agree though, that extra wiggle room can be huge for creating interesting brews i feel. Though the limitation of trying to make something competitive and cheap really does lead to super interesting creativity, the overall costs to stay competitive keep going up.

      @@funkydiscogod Both Sigardian Evangel (4x) and Suntail Squadron (2x) would be great I think! I would look at Evangel as the main Monument creature, then play Aviary Mechanic or Kor Skyfisher as secondary one. I wanna try the deck after the holidays, for now I just tried quickly designing it, here is what I came up with:
      -> I think Thraben Inspector (4x) + Slayer's Bounty (3x) as removal-draw suite might be good in the deck (though maybe they are too slow against faster decks).
      -> For other one drops, Esper Sentinel (4x) and Giant Killer (at least 2x) seem good to me.
      -> My version of the deck is mostly white with only a small green splash for Torens (at least 2x).
      -> I am thinking about playing Oswald Fiddlebender (2x) and some 2 mv artifact (1x) (probably Glass Casket, but Metallic Mimic, Throne of the God-Pharaoh, Dancing Sword, Treasure Map or Mazemind Tome could also be playable) to be able to tutor Monument of 0 mv clue tokens (which would trigger Slayer's Bounty!) or one of the ~seven 1 mv artifacts. One could even entirely cut green and Torens, but I would rather play 2 of each and see how they work. With so many artifacts (~12), one might even play Ingenious Smith.
      -> The other way would be to play the deck would be with leaning more into green and play something like Antique Collector for even more clues. Antiwue Collector would be awesome with Sigardian Evangel (which we would be happy to have more copies in library), but horrible with Suntail Squadron (whose conjured 1/1s we would hate to draw). :-D Other possible green cards are the ones @Lucho Juega weas mentioned, maybe even CoCo.
      -> Now what I don't know is how to close out the games. Should I play some kind of anthem? Intrepid Adversary, Paladin Class, Venerated Loxodon (great with Mechanic or Skyfisher), Unbreakable Formation, Shalai, Voice of Plenty, Basri's Lieutenant... I dunno. Maybe go an entirely different route? Also, dunno what that would be.
      I am really looking forward to try the deck, though it will cost like 15~20 rare wildcards, which I don't like.

    Torens didnt feel worth the mana base, should be alot more consistent (also cheaper) mono white

    • @urlor_jkron
      @urlor_jkron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What do you replace him with though? What consistency you gain on the mana base you lose on your payoffs. The point is to have 8 of the token making effect. I guess Adeline might be an acceptable option if you are committed to being budget and mono-white, but will be much less explosive. At that point it's just another Oketra Monument deck, which frankly would be much less interesting for a video.
      If not budget, or for people who already have the mana base, then two colors is nothing in modern. Also, there are also intermediate options like pathways and fast lands, which are actually well suited for this deck. Being heavy one color makes the pathways better. Having a tap land on turn four isn't nearly as bad as it is on the first three turns for this deck which make the fast lands much less painful.

  • @int3r4ct
    @int3r4ct 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think Explosive is fine. You’re paying an extra R over just playing Sleight of Hand and you only get to see 1 extra card, you don’t even get to draw any more cards or anything. Plus you have to play 2 colors for it, which isn’t much in Modern, but it counts for something.

      @@int3r4ct I mean the typical playpattern with iteration is as follows: turn 1-2 do whatever you want (dragons Tage channelers and ragavans apreciated) then turn 3 you cast iteration, you take the useful card, exil and play a land and ship whatever you don't want. If you don't hit a land you exil a 1 mana spell, play a land from your hand and then cast said 1 mana spell. Sure it's not a straight up draw 2 for 2 but in about 90% of scenarios it is.

    I get why you complain about ragavan but complaining about expressive iteration and comparing their deck which has 3 colors, two of which are the best card draw colors, to your budget basically mono-white deck which is the WORST color for card draw is both funny and somewhat annoying. They also drew 3 iterations in top 50% of their deck, drawing that much of any decent card draw spell would make it seem OP.

    My personal opinion is that you should stop playing snarls and tangolands in your budget decks. Just add the $50 to play better lands, like Razorverge Thicket or Wooded Bastion or Sunpetal Grove. I’d rather see how good the concept is than how often the deck can manage to avoid tripping over its own mana.

    Calling Expressive Iteration too strong is a bit ridiculous. WOTC can’t just deprive Blue of good cantrips when every other color gets repeatable forms of card advantage/card filtering.

    • @UlfMTG
      @UlfMTG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Iteration is not just a good cantrip, it's the best 2 mana draw spell ever printed. It sees play in literally every format that it's legal in. The card is obviously INSANELY strong, it's not a stretch to call it too strong.

    I don't remember Seth complaining about opponents mulliganing much before the London Mulligan change, but now it feels like half the time when an opponent mulligans Seth seems to make some comment about it. "Not enough Modern Horizons 2 cards in their first hand." I get that the opponents are playing with powerful cards, but especially for Budget Magic where the entire series is built around using less powerful cards to hopefully good effect, complaining that the opponent is using the same power cards that make up most of Modern just wears thin pretty quickly for me. Complaining about the luck of the draw is fine, but I personally don't like to hear complaints about the opponent's deck choice (excepting Tron, the arch-nemesis). I dunno, maybe I'm just watching these videos too much or something.
