Dear Jude, here's a tip from a dedicated composter (living not that far from where you are): leave the composting process be. This is Scotland, and it just isn't warm here. You will have noticed this. Therefore you are making cold compost, whether you want to or not. This will happen magically, all by itself. Only thing is, it takes time. My compost is on a 3 year rotation, I have 3 bins, in a smallish garden. No1 bin is this year's compost, number 2 is last years compost and no 3 bin is the compost I am going to put on the soil in about December/January time. and then I turn no2 into bin 3 etc, you get the picture. No 1 bin is the biggest, and no 3 is the smallest. I do rummage a bit in number 1 bin ,if I can't put any more material in, just with a fork, and then it settles and that is all I do to it. If you are so lucky as to be able to gather too much material for one bin, just make another one right next to it. Or 2! You need them close together so you can turn the stuff from the one to the other. And of course you want them right near where you're going to grow your veg, so you don't have to make unnecessary trips with wheelbarrows. Good luck!
Yes, I'm in Scotland too. I just keep filling quite a number of larger than normal composters and, when I finally do excavate them, it's black and beautiful stuff. You can speed up the process with wee .... I know to most that sounds disgusting, but I don't know why when folks are happy to put all sorts of manure into their garden. Not recommended to do that with human poop unless a foray into humanure has been researched in advance.
I wouldn't trade your character and disposition for all the practical skills you are keen to develop over time, Jude! I think we are alll loving the journey.

Jude, did you ever anticipate that there would be someone on the other side of the world hunkered down in her car during a work break for the sole purpose of watching your channel while eating take away lunch? 🙋♀️😄 thank you for sharing your adventures with us! P.s. welding a flame thrower to torch wood is a level of bravery I hope to achieve in this lifetime! P.p.s could you level your garden beds by increasing the height of the raised bed structure as the lawn slopes downward? and then when you fill it with soil, you could just level it out? That might require some clever math so I can’t help you there, but I see it in my head.
Hahaha!! I hope I was good company for your lunch break!! The torching was SO much fun! I was kind of intimidated by it at first (I’ve never used one before) but it was addictive! I’ve still got a bit more to do, but I’ve run out of propane so I’m waiting for them to come and switch my bottle! I think I’ve worked out what I’m going to do with the raised beds - which is going to involve some digging to level out bits of the ground… we shall see how that goes 😂
Also great additions to any herb garden. Comfrey makes a wonderful sav with antibacterial and antifungal properties also fabulous for burns. Borage is a great summer beverage, very refreshing also can be added into salads or the leaves dried for tea.
I agree...comfrey is such a great compost activator, so is diluted urine! If you grow comfrey you need the variety called Blocking 14 because it doesn't seed itself everywhere. It's easy to grow from root cuttings. 😊
@@rewildingjude I can send you some root cuttings of Comfrey Bocking 14 if you like. They are super easy to get growing either in a pot over winter or in the ground.
I love how many people appreciate and love you! Wish the whole world was like that!! You are amazing and relatable and I hope you have wild success with this channel! Thanks for continuing to bring us along. Take care and sending all good wishes from Ohio!!❤🎉😊
Tip from my husband who is a gardener, rake the leaves on to grass and mow them up , it chops them up nicely for composting. Your petrol mower should do a good job.
Hi Jude. Like someone already said, we watch regardless of content. You, your stunning cottage, your skills, even though you say you have none, & your Dads collection of everything make Sundays special. Thankyou for just being you. Love from Spain ❤

Jude meanders into a relatively organised work area... "...my shed/workshop has fallen into disarray..." Oh Jude, if you could only see my shed, it looks like a bomb has landed in it. I felt astonishingly guilty and immediately added "Tidy the shed" onto my mental list of things to do (most of which probably won't be...). Thanks again for another uplifting and cheering video. Definitely one of the highlights of the weekend!
Hahaha!! 😂😂😂 I mean - my dad’s garage is what I’m comparing it to - and that man knew where everything was! Yet I’m over here with no idea what’s going on 😂😂
I look forward to meeting your dog too. Dogs are such wonderful companions. And your dog will be able to run all over your property. I’m sure that you know this, but you will need to be careful about what you leave lying around, as some dogs will eat pretty much anything, regardless of the damage the stuff can cause them. I speak from expensive experience 😉
You say you have no skills, but you do have common sense, intelligence and general knowledge. I feel so relaxed watching you get on with things because I trust you not to do anything daft. About the compost - if you're anywhere near the sea you might get some kelp and soak it for a concoction - good for the heap.
A hint: as you build your compost pile, throw in a few spades full of dirt as you go. And earthworms if you can. Coffee grounds and tea leaves, eggshells are good too.
I don't think ivy is good for animals. I know it can be toxic for humans. Hopefully they would probably have to eat a large amount to cause problems. 🤫
You have really got some videomaking-skills! Love your storytelling, and can't stop thinking of all the extra exercise you are getting from walking away from the camera all the time 😁
I just wanted to tell you how much I like the way you film your posts. I enjoy the angles and perspectives. You have beautiful neighbors. I love cows. Keep up your good work.
thank you for being part of my quiet time on weekend shifts, I work in a very difficult job role and you make the downtime between cases incredibly calming.
Oh! I think I know why that board caught on your circular saw and tore - the weight of the board is causing it to fall into the middle where you're cutting it, thus gripping the blade. Try to have the fulcrum of each of your cut pieces a little closer to the inside where you're cutting -looks like it was resting on the very far end of the board. The setup looked way better when you were using the hand saw. It's better to have the board fall away from you (even if it flips into the air) than it is to have it fall in towards the saw. You're doing great! Good luck!
Thank you!! I had no idea that this would be the case (I do not have an angles or maths brain, it’s 99% colours and paint fumes in there!) - but it makes total sense!!
Don't underestimate what people can learn from your videos. Even your mistakes teach people. Besides, it's a pleasure to watch you. You feeding the cows❤❤❤
Ahh thank you! I think it’s important to share the mistakes because that’s how we learn! (And I make lots - if I didn’t share them, my videos would be about 5mins long!) 😂
Hello Jude! These are for me days of loss and grieving, but your channel was a soul-soothing discovery. You made smile with your energy and your love for your brand new life...thank you.
Jude: Thank you for sharing. I am in the U.S.A and we call a weed trimmer a "weed eater" over here across the pond. I must say that I have never seen a real. live "weed eater" before today. I love your tenacity and perseverance. Your parents are watching over you. Bless you in your endeavors.
Jude, you would fit in well with my family. Our unofficial motto is "when all else fails, read the directions. " We're always trying to assemble things without reading the instructions. In our defense, though we did assemble a clock correctly without them as everything was in Japanese and none of us could read them.😉
Have you ever tried to put together a single width bed with drawers from IKEA? Before checking out the instructions? I was helping a friend & her husband assemble one. First thing she did was open all of the bags holding the screws etc & dumping them in a pile. If we had read the instructions first, we never, ever would have done that 😂😂😂😂😂
@@pdq5465 You need one person on the job who's OCD enough to at least sort them by size! What was your friend thinking???? The fasteners are separate for a reason. You now have first hand knowledge of the phrase "live and learn." You now know who to send for pizza while you're assembling stuff...
@@bethenecampbell6463 I’m the OCD one. I did sort everything, but it can be hard to distinguish one bloody screw from another, with no words. Fortunately, humour reigned😄
@@pdq5465 A good sense of humor always helps! My dad and I have been doing this together since I was four (the Japanese clock) and we still read the directions only when we can't figure something out. Most recently a flat pack entertainment center. We had to take it apart twice to get all the covered edges facing the right way! 😆

Just asked my wife for a second opinion of my self-diagnosis and it's confirmed: I have shed envy! 😂 She did shoot me a look when I could be heard muttering "nice rack"! 🙃 With regard to strimmers, from experience, if you go down the battery route, I'd get one that takes 2 of your power tool batteries. The extra voltage will give it the necessary oomph.
Jude! You are doing such a great job! You do have skills- the willingness to work, perseverance, and the ability to look things up! You also are able to say that it didn’t happen today, but I will try again tomorrow. These are all important skills. In fact they are more important than the DIY skills. Those can be learned. Keep going. I really enjoy and appreciate my Sunday afternoon time catching up with you each week.
Hello Jude. You don't need a replacement reel for your Dad's old trimmer, just the nylon, which comes in rolls (it can be any name brand). The reel comes out, then you wind the nylon thread around it and reinsert the reel. You just need to make sure it's thin enough to pass through the reel hole. I enjoy your videos so much. I am a bit envious of your Beautiful property. Nothing like that in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!! ;) Cheers

I have a huge shed made of asbestos and the removal is so costly. I keep hoping we get a government subsidy at some point. I feel for you Jude. You are going great guns with all your projects. Great seeing the progress. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Pegs and String are always a handy tool to use when measuring out your beds. 2 to 3 foot pegs if you can, to help give you the levelling space you may need due to your ground slant. Depending how how deep you will want to go. Then you level against your string. Similar to what you would do if laying concrete.
You think you don’t have skills? I live in a condo in the city and would be lost if I couldn’t get Starbucks delivery. I dodge when the HOA is looking for volunteers to clear snow. My proudest moment recently was when my toilet started to make trickling noises and I figured out how to fix it by replacing the flapper. Must be why I find your videos so relaxing because I can live vicariously through them. My favourite this week was getting a good look at the cows ❤
I mean - great job on the toilet!! That’s definitely a moment to be proud of!! (I struggle in cities! I had to drive into Aberdeen today, which is not a big city AT ALL and I still got stressed!) 😂
I watch you fixing up your house and property and do everything that we did when we moved to our farm in Saskatchewan, Canada. 32 years later we’re doing it all again! Enjoy all the years in between!!! 😊

Hi, Jude. Love your vlog! Here is a hint to make your sawing easier: When cutting boards, support both sides of the board close to the cut line - about 6 inches away - as well as nearer the ends to keep the cut sides from falling away and your saw wont bind up when you get close to the end of the cut.
"I actually don't have any skills." 😂 Give me a determined person any day over a skilled one. You will do great things there. Truly. Often successes can only be measured in retrospect. So just enjoy the work, setbacks and all. In time you will amaze yourself.
This is why you use your lawn mower with a bag it chops stuff up and then you put it in your pile….in the us we also purchase worms ,and compost starter then keep it covered for warmth

I do love reusing old stuff though! I’ve got a cupboard in there at the moment that I think was my dad’s dad’s - eventually I’m planning on refinishing it and bringing it into the house though - it’s too nice to be out there! 😂
hi Jude, I don’t know whether anybody told you or not but sawing over knot will usually make your saw kick back. Thanks so much for the tip on the reusable straps. I didn’t know they made reusable ones boy would they come in handy.be sure you leave the width of your lawnmower in between and around your raise beds. That way if you wanna keep the weeds down around them, you don’t have to constantly be standing there with the weedeater. You can just mow around all of them be done with it. I didn’t do that with mine and boy has it been a headache. 😂 you need to put the same kind of wire that you put on your leaf composting container on the bottom of those beds or those guys will be coming up and eating your stuff in your beds. P.s. welding a flame thrower to torch wood is a level of bravery I hope to achieve in this lifetime!
@@rewildingjudeyou are delightful company! Looking forward to seeing how you resolve the sloping garden beds!
One of your best skills is that you never give up! I love that about you. I look forward each weekend to your videos. You are amazing!
I’m stubborn till the end! 😂😂
Grow comfrey and borage. They are great compost activators and they also are bee attractors. Win, win. Hugs from Crete!
Yes!! I’m going to have a little patch of both! I grew borage at my last house - and it was HUGE!!
@@rewildingjude I can send you some root cuttings of Comfrey Bocking 14 if you like. They are super easy to get growing either in a pot over winter or in the ground.
Done is better than perfect is my motto.
Mine too!!
Your cheerful nature makes me happy! Thank you.
Ahh I’m glad to hear it! Thank you!

Your petrol mower should do a good job.
good idea!
I used to do this with my private hedging, after trimming it. Saves a lot of work.
Except leave some of the leaves for pollinators to overwinter in.
Yes we do this as well! Chops and mulches everything up nicely!
I came looking for this comment 🎉
Hi Jude. Like someone already said, we watch regardless of content. You, your stunning cottage, your skills, even though you say you have none, & your Dads collection of everything make Sundays special. Thankyou for just being you. Love from Spain ❤
Thank you!!! 😊
I laughed out loud when you talked about lowering your “buried treasure standards” to anything but asbestos. 😂 You are a gem, and you make my heart happy. Keep up the good work. 🤗❤️😊
I hope that you are feeling the Love from us all here Jude!
I really am! This is the best comment section on TH-cam! 🥰💗
I see a Jude video, I click and I smile

Genius to use the burnt wood for raised beds. Instantly waterproof! You have skills, whether you realise it or not 👏
I saw a few people do it in some videos and thought ‘well I want to try that!’ (Mainly I wanted an excuse to try a propane torch! Haha)
Sunday is my favorite TH-cam day. I love seeing what you have been up to each week!
Thank you!! Sunday is a great TH-cam day! I’m going to catch up with vanwives while I eat my dinner!
You can compost all you want, but when you hand feed a cow you're a hero in my book.😊
That was the BEST way to spend an afternoon - I had such a great half an hour with the cows!
@@rewildingjudeWait till you find a frog singing in a water source...you may find that it will teach you how to mimic it. Bye bye half an hour. "Crrrooak" 🐸
Jude meanders into a relatively organised work area...
"...my shed/workshop has fallen into disarray..."
Oh Jude, if you could only see my shed, it looks like a bomb has landed in it. I felt astonishingly guilty and immediately added "Tidy the shed" onto my mental list of things to do (most of which probably won't be...).
Thanks again for another uplifting and cheering video. Definitely one of the highlights of the weekend!
Hahaha!! 😂😂😂
I mean - my dad’s garage is what I’m comparing it to - and that man knew where everything was! Yet I’m over here with no idea what’s going on 😂😂
As a dog lover, I cannot wait for you to get your dog. It's pure, unconditional love. Thank you so much for your videos, I really enjoy them 😊
I’m excited! I have to overthink everything before I make a decision and I’m currently at that point! 😂😂 but it’s going to happen!
Yes!! I chucked a bag of my homemade compost from my last house, into the bin to kickstart it! I wish I drank coffee as it’s so good for the compost!!
@@rewildingjudecoffee ground suppress root growth and seed germination. I only use them around established trees and shrubbery.

You have really got some videomaking-skills! Love your storytelling, and can't stop thinking of all the extra exercise you are getting from walking away from the camera all the time 😁
Thank you!!
Hahaha the amount of extra steps I get in, running around to get the camera is ridiculous 😂😂
You have the best sense of humour, Jude.

Doing a great job, Jude. You'll be fit as a butcher's dog by the end of winter with all the lifting and carrying you are doing.
My problem is I’m fine when I’m moving, but whenever I’m still for too long I’m eating something 😂😂

thank you for being part of my quiet time on weekend shifts, I work in a very difficult job role and you make the downtime between cases incredibly calming.
Good luck!
I was going to say the same. Glad I read before writing!
I was looking to see if anyone else commented on this also. Even when he was cutting with the hand saw, saw horses were still a bit too far apart.
Thank you!! I had no idea that this would be the case (I do not have an angles or maths brain, it’s 99% colours and paint fumes in there!) - but it makes total sense!!
@@JADufault21this is good to know! (I’ve never used sawhorses before so I’m just winging it! Thank you!)

Here in New Hampshire USA we commonly refer to a weed trimmer as a weed whacker.
Yes, we are just that violent 😂
We call them a WeedEater over here in N Z to. Cheers

Your videography, editing and musical choices are very good. I really do appreciate and enjoy your videos.
Thank you so much! 🥰
Jude, you would fit in well with my family. Our unofficial motto is "when all else fails, read the directions. " We're always trying to assemble things without reading the instructions. In our defense, though we did assemble a clock correctly without them as everything was in Japanese and none of us could read them.😉
I really struggle with instructions! Feel like I have to learn by doing.

With regard to strimmers, from experience, if you go down the battery route, I'd get one that takes 2 of your power tool batteries. The extra voltage will give it the necessary oomph.

Nothing like that in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!! ;) Cheers
But there’s plenty of cows in Wisconsin!

The cow moments were the best - an unexected intermission that would make anyone smiile.
I can’t tell you how happy it makes me when I have a new post from you pop up in my feed.

Hi, Jude. Love your vlog! Here is a hint to make your sawing easier: When cutting boards, support both sides of the board close to the cut line - about 6 inches away - as well as nearer the ends to keep the cut sides from falling away and your saw wont bind up when you get close to the end of the cut.
Another stroll into your world Jude. Thank you

you need to put the same kind of wire that you put on your leaf composting container on the bottom of those beds or those guys will be coming up and eating your stuff in your beds.
