The discovery of the self-propelled lawn mower function gave me a good laugh I've had many of those moments with my house. For your future Q&A, I'm curious as to how you currently support yourself (remote work?) and how far you are from the nearest major city.
Nearest major city is Aberdeen - it’s supposedly about 45mins away by car but I haven’t visited it yet! @janeluck7213 @ibenmeiner - it’s the second most asked question, don’t worry! Will answer in the video! 😊
Oh, I know how hard this type of DIY can be. It never takes 15 minutes or an hour, it takes days...but that's the fun of it, and the satisfaction when you finally finish something is so great. And you know what? Jobs that need to be done never stop. There is always something to do, and that is the beauty of it. And where is your kitten? Someone to keep you company on cold winter evenings in front of the fireplace. It is so cool to watch your videos; I am definitely waiting for them on Sundays now. Take care and lots of love.
You’re so right! I spent two hours putting up a new shower curtain rail yesterday (a job that turned into an absolute fiasco!) but the shower I took afterwards was very rewarding! 😂😂 Re. Kitten! There will be a dog, a cat and some chickens on my horizon - I have to travel for a friend’s wedding next month (no one to pet sit!) but after that, it is ON!
Hi Jude. My 13 and 10 year old sons and I love watching your podcast. We laughed so much about the random bits of wood as kindling. We all agree about the duct tape and WD40! Mr 10 year old asks “what type of chicken breed are you thinking of getting?” Mr 13 asks “which TH-cam channels do you like to watch?” Looking forward to seeing you next week! You are doing such a great job with the place!
Hi Jude! I look forward to your videos every week! The self propelled mower is meant to assist you, to speed up the mow. This way, you don't exhaust yourself and you save time. The faster you get the mowing done, the more time you have for your wonderful projects. 🌹Thanks for being such an upbeat person!
That is very true!! The novelty of mowing wears off very quickly. I finished the last area of the garden and the bit I did first needed doing again 😂😂😂
I love this vlog. My lovely dad died in February with Alzheimer's. He was the go to person for so many things. He always knew or we dodged along together to fashion whatever endeavour. Dad adventures. Feel so lucky. I'm 55 and a grand parent myself now. But I miss my lovely silly clever funny dad so much. I love that his kindling is going to keep you warm. Indefinitely it seems. This winter. The art of your channel is that you are launching yourself into learning new skills as you carve a little piece of heaven. I look forward to watching it. ❤
I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! I’m so sorry for your loss. My dad gave me the best cuddle just before he went into the hospice and I think about it a lot. We didn’t always get on (wayyy too similar!) but I miss him so much. Sending you all the hugs!
It warms my heart every time you mention your Dad memories...n respectfully refer t his 'quirks' etc So refreshing! N you not wanting t 'waste energy n efforts he made re kindleing".....wonderful! You have a Beautiful Soul ! ❤
I am so enjoying your videos Jude. Your mention of the kindling took me right back to being young and watching my beloved dad chopping wood and organising kindling by his garage at what I still think of as ‘home’. A precious memory stored away and not visited in many many years. Thank you for that.
Hi Jude, l am a 72 year old nonna with a sick hubby. I have realised that I will have to take on more of the tasks that my hubby has always done. You inspire me to attempt project that I have been nervous about. Thank you and I look forward to your videos 💜💜🇦🇺
An inside line is essential. My sister lives off grid and she has a barn and has a washing line set up for the winter and find it absolutely brilliant so this is a really good idea if you want to use it for drying clothes to save energy on drying your clothes.
You have inherited much of your Dads concepts of how to & why things need to be done along with good tools & I liked the fact when sorting out & packing up both your & their homes you had foresight to pack lots of stuff ie kindling 👍 how great is your supply & in the cold winter months you can reflect back to Mum & Dad while you are warm & cosy These inherited gifts are priceless Job well jobbed 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Oh Jude I so look forward to your posts, it's so joyful i never stop smiling. 11 crates of kindling will go nowhere especially if we have a cold winter. Not really wanting to die is a very good reason not to use unknown recepticles for water you wish to consume. 🤣
Hahaha you’re probably right! I’ll have to keep my eye open for more! (Where’s my dad when I need him?! That man could sniff out a skip at 20 paces!! 😂😂😂)
@@rewildingjude Carry on the tradition your dad started and go on a kindl hunt. I walk my dogs and come home with armfulls of dog sticks and beach drift wood😉 I must admit to tending to keep any bits I especially like to use for other things. I dare say there is a distinct lack of skips but tree shedding after winter is also good for kindling and dried leaves. Keep up the great work. 😊
First, let me say that you are a breath of fresh air! I’m sure that your parents would have been very proud of you. Second is my question: is this adventure all that you thought it would be, emotionally? I can see someone with a positive attitude but I also understand the huge task that you have ahead of you. It will be hard to maintain a positive attitude as you’re preparing for winter off grid. Good luck with all you do, dear one.
The reason the wood split is obvious, You needed more kindling. Well done. I get so excited on Saturday, because I know you will be posting on Sunday. Thanks for sharing.
I am blown away with your new channel and can’t wait for the next episodes. You are obviously a seasoned professional in the realm of YT and your ability to adapt to your new lifestyle is amazing. I’m hooked and WILL be watching for as long as you put out your content to the world. Good luck..
Pointed spade’s definitely better - we call them poachers spades round here. We have a clay soil and it helps get through roots too. I’d use a flat spade like you have there more for moving loosened soil.
I love hearing about your dad Jude. He is obviously still very much alive in your heart. I'm sure he is watching over you and is proud of your efforts. I have done my share of those home projects and you are right, as soon as you say something will be easy, it is not. Keep up your wonderful sense of humor, it makes all the difference.
When I saw your dads wood collection it reminded me of my dad. Do all dads have a wood collection? I worked in an old building with sash windows and my window wouldn’t stay up. Trying to do better than sticking an A4 ring binder in to hold it up I asked dad for a bit of wood. Off we went I found a piece about 2 inch square and 15 inch long. “You can’t have that one he said that’s a bit of good mahogany!” 😂😂😂 and what else are you going to do with it dad?!? Yes it held my window open. Memories eh? Miss my dad.
I love your dad's kindle and shovel and things you use ❤ it is like he is part of your setting up and settling into your new life ❤ it makes your journey so extra special.
Yes!! It’s so good to have all their things around me - I have a lot of my mum’s kitchen stuff, but I’m nowhere near as proficient in the kitchen as she was so I need to work on that!
Thankyou for another uplifting video, Jude. I look forward to them throughout the week. I know they must take up a considerable amount of your time to film.
“Turns out the arrow was there for a reason” really made me laugh. I would so have done that too. Lovely video, as always. Glad to see your steel toe capped boots. And you seem to have some sort of a smartwatch on, hopefully with a medical emergency feature. I tested my iPhone fall detector last week by tripping over something and really hurting myself. I had an audience, to make me feel a fool as well as hurt, but up there on your own, you need to be able to summon help easily. Accidents come out of the blue.
Nice lawn, well done! I love that your father's tools are helping you sort out the place, and he has prepared the kindling for when the weather turns. It's like he (and the Elf) are right there providing a helping hand too. Thanks as always for the episode.
A spade is for digging but not for levering. You can crack them across. My father was a farmer and dug hundreds of fence post holes. A narrow bladed drainage spade or a long crowbar for heavy leverage
Hey Jude....in this increasingly dark world..your light shines bright! Love your attitude, creativity and joyfulness. Your videos are beautifully filmed and edited. Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. Cheers from Vancouver Island, Canada
I'm so excited to see you back to TH-cam! As an archaeologist, and self-proclaimed expert on digging holes - I would recommend finding someone with a grinding stone who can put an edge on your spades and then pick up a set of files to keep the edges sharp. This way you're actually cutting through the dirt, plants, roots, and etc instead of scooping them. I'm not sure who/where you would have that done in Scotland, but someone at a garden center or DIY place would probably know.
This is exactly the expertise I need! Now files I have (thanks Dad!) but I’ll see if I can find someone with a grinding stone - I bet the local men’s shed group can help me out! (And I want to join whatever it is they get up to, so that’s an excuse to go along and check it out!)
The asbestos panels are unlikely to hurt you unless you break or cut them. As long as it stays intact, it's probably ok, especially if you keep it outdoors. You can encapsulate them, too, paint works. They could be quite useful otherwise. You could cut them, as long as it stays wet, quite wet, and then encapsulate the edges. Former asbestos building inspector...
I found some random bits of corrugated asbestos in the corner of our garden when we moved here (we have an asbestos garage, so it may have come from there). I did the right thing by calling the Council and asking what to do with it. Just double-bag it and shove it in the bin, they said. I shouldn't have bothered reading up on asbestos and all the official recommendations for disposing of it. The only issue I have with asbestos walls is that I can't attach anything to them and I wouldn't collect rain water off of the roof (or a roof with lead flashing, for that matter - is that just me?). We don't scrape the moss off it either. One of the few occasions where we spray a moss-killing/removing chemical. Otherwise, we leave it well alone.
Just wanted to say that your videos have been keeping me company during top surgery recovery - they're so relaxing and uplifting, I'm loving seeing your space slowly come together! Can't wait to see how it all turns out! It's gonna be a dream place

A suggestion Jude, prune back the branches hanging over the shed roof to avoid the leaves blocking the gutter and definitely get rid of the ivy. Its roots will eat through your down pipe. Otherwise great job! 😊
For the future, as I recognise the renovation will be very expensive, I 100% support robotic lawnmowers - especially those that map the garden and don’t just randomly criss-cross the lawn. They are amazing but aren’t cheap.

I've laughed with you, I've cried with you and I really appreciate you as lots of us here. Best of luck with all your projects and thanks for the weekly videos that I truly enjoy. Love from France!
Your dad reminds me of mine...never waste anything, multiple uses for everything and a don't throw that out I might need it someday attitude..enjoying each and every video as you embark on this new chapter in this adventure we call life
That looked like a potato fork you were using at the start. They have blunt tynes and are designed to lift spuds without overly damaging them. Yes they are great for moving soil like a rake, but for real forking tasks, something with sharp tynes will do a better job. I love that you are using all the things your dad has collected to help your projects along. It's like having him still at your side in a strange kind of way and a little of his energy and things he collected is moving forward with you in life. Hate to say but that concrete paving slab is also likely full of asbestos. Long handled spades make digging easier, due to the lever effect, so you need about half the energy you exert with a short spade, so a good long handled spade is a solid investment. I would also be designing your garden beds so you can fit a poly tunnel over them, as you will find the growing season in Scotland for vegetables is frustratingly short otherwise. A polytunnel will extend your growing season substantially. So impressed with your rainwater harvest system. Keep that ivy away from your shed or you will have a job clearing it later. It will get into and around your fab plumbing effort. Yet again well done Jude!
Scotland may not be known for its droughts, but we do get periods of low/no rain in Aberdeenshire, and the soil is quite free draining and dries out easily by later spring/early summer. I installed a water butt this summer, only 100L capacity, and was very surprised that it was filled to the brim after one night’s rainfall. Keep up the good work!
I’m always of the mindset that you might as well store it while there’s lots of it! Annoyingly - two weeks in and my water butts are decidedly still empty - I think I inadvertently installed them in the most sheltered spot in the garden! 😂🙈 they might need relocating in the spring!
Thank you for sharing your life with us. None of us know everything. We all learn new things as we go about our daily activities. We can now learn from each other.
The corrugated Asbestos sheets are cement bonded and will contain very low amounts. (Typically les than 10% so it will be unlicensed) Normally you can dispose of this at your local recycling centre. Check with them before taking it in. Until you can afford that pick up truck, you should seriously consider getting a trailer. It will really help with transporting items that you can pick up for repurposing!

The discovery of the self-propelled lawn mower function gave me a good laugh I've had many of those moments with my house. For your future Q&A, I'm curious as to how you currently support yourself (remote work?) and how far you are from the nearest major city.
Yes I was wondering the same things
I have also wondered but i couldnt figure out if that was to private :)
@@ibenmeiner Me too, but since he's opened the door for a Q&A, I figured I could at least ask. :)
Nearest major city is Aberdeen - it’s supposedly about 45mins away by car but I haven’t visited it yet!
@janeluck7213 @ibenmeiner - it’s the second most asked question, don’t worry! Will answer in the video! 😊
@@rewildingjude Aberdeen is supposed to be lovely, but so is most of Scotland I guess 😁
working my way through your playlist, and you are doing so great! your dad would be proud of your resourcefulness and stellar wood shed haha
Yes kitten needed here!
@@teresab126 TWO kittens ❤
You’re so right! I spent two hours putting up a new shower curtain rail yesterday (a job that turned into an absolute fiasco!) but the shower I took afterwards was very rewarding! 😂😂
Re. Kitten! There will be a dog, a cat and some chickens on my horizon - I have to travel for a friend’s wedding next month (no one to pet sit!) but after that, it is ON!
@@rewildingjude ❤❤❤
You could cut the green barrel in half to create 2 flower planters
That’s very true!! Good idea!! I could probably paint it to perk it up too!
Ahh a big hello to you and Misters 10 and 13! Please thank them for their excellent questions!! ❤
Just found this vlog what a hardworking young man looking forward to seeing how
you achieve everything ❤
@@rewildingjude I still say get SHEEEEEP!
I love your videos Jude, you are always so positive and upbeat. It’s a privilege to be sharing in your journey, thankyou for taking us along. Xx
Thank you so much for following along!! ❤
26:25 love this tip❤ I have a quick one to add...when unscrewing or screwing in general rule, righty tighty lefty loosey. I say this all the time xxx
Agree your parents would be so proud!
It warms my heart every time you mention your Dad memories...n respectfully refer t his 'quirks' etc
So refreshing! N you not wanting t 'waste energy n efforts he made re kindleing".....wonderful! You have a Beautiful Soul ! ❤
Ahh thank you!! Haha, he was a man of many quirks and my mum and I teased him about them a lot! 🥰
@@rewildingjude lol! That sounds like the title of a book! Lol! (The Man of Many Quirks) 🤭🙊🤣
❤
Hi Debra, you can do it!!
You could have Jenga block guttering spacers lol. Ok ok I know they prob aren’t big enough but it made me smile.
Have you thought of putting a clothes line in the barn ready for the Scottish winter weather. It would save you running in and out when/always rains
An inside line is essential. My sister lives off grid and she has a barn and has a washing line set up for the winter and find it absolutely brilliant so this is a really good idea if you want to use it for drying clothes to save energy on drying your clothes.
I am so proud of you Jude!! You have motivated me to complete projects in my own life (I've been practicing avoidance).
Sounds like your parents are still helping u out in lots of mysterious ways.😊 That's comforting.
They really are! I went blackberrying earlier - and all the berries I picked are currently soaking in a mixing bowl that used to belong to my mum! 🥰
Ah, now you live in Scotland you have to call them brambles.😂
You have inherited much of your Dads concepts of how to & why things need to be done along with good tools & I liked the fact when sorting out & packing up both your & their homes you had foresight to pack lots of stuff ie kindling 👍 how great is your supply & in the cold winter months you can reflect back to Mum & Dad while you are warm & cosy These inherited gifts are priceless
Job well jobbed 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Oh Jude I so look forward to your posts, it's so joyful i never stop smiling. 11 crates of kindling will go nowhere especially if we have a cold winter. Not really wanting to die is a very good reason not to use unknown recepticles for water you wish to consume. 🤣
Hahaha you’re probably right! I’ll have to keep my eye open for more! (Where’s my dad when I need him?! That man could sniff out a skip at 20 paces!! 😂😂😂)
@@rewildingjude😂
@@rewildingjude Carry on the tradition your dad started and go on a kindl hunt. I walk my dogs and come home with armfulls of dog sticks and beach drift wood😉 I must admit to tending to keep any bits I especially like to use for other things. I dare say there is a distinct lack of skips but tree shedding after winter is also good for kindling and dried leaves. Keep up the great work. 😊
@@rewildingjudeI bet you’ll develop that skip sniffing ability!! It’s in the blood!
I can't help but smile when Jude smiles. Need to bottle your sunshine and sell it, you'd make a fortune ❤

@@ilovemusic4556 “breath of fresh air” is such a perfect description 🤣
That is an EXCELLENT question! Thank you!!
The reason the wood split is obvious, You needed more kindling. Well done. I get so excited on Saturday, because I know you will be posting on Sunday. Thanks for sharing.
😂🤣
Hahaha!! Always room for more kindling here! Thank you so much - I’m glad you’re enjoying them!
I am blown away with your new channel and can’t wait for the next episodes. You are obviously a seasoned professional in the realm of YT and your ability to adapt to your new lifestyle is amazing. I’m hooked and WILL be watching for as long as you put out your content to the world. Good luck..
Thank you!!
You are such a happy and cheerful person you bring a big smile to my face and probably lots of other people as well
Ahh thank you! I hope so!
Another great video! I love that you saved your Dad’s kindling, so awesome. ❤
Pointed spade’s definitely better - we call them poachers spades round here. We have a clay soil and it helps get through roots too. I’d use a flat spade like you have there more for moving loosened soil.
I’ll have to look up a pointed space, I’ve only seen short handled ones, for planting stuff, when I’ve searched!
Ahh thank you! I have so many Dad stories tucked away! Humour definitely helps, life is too short to take it too seriously!
Dad is still keeping you warm........xxxxx
🥰❤️
I love your dad's kindle and shovel and things you use ❤ it is like he is part of your setting up and settling into your new life ❤ it makes your journey so extra special.
Yes!! It’s so good to have all their things around me - I have a lot of my mum’s kitchen stuff, but I’m nowhere near as proficient in the kitchen as she was so I need to work on that!
Thankyou for another uplifting video, Jude. I look forward to them throughout the week. I know they must take up a considerable amount of your time to film.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoy them! They do take quite a while but I enjoy doing it!
Thank you so much! That’s a lovely thing to hear 😊❤
You can install a sprout at bottom of barrel. Also a little tape can test the water inside barrels or send it for analysis at a lab
The kitchen roll holder can double as a toilet roll holder for spares 😉
You are so productive and great at problem solving in your ‘eden’. I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying your videos. ❤

I came here to say something along the same lines. The branches can also damage the roof
For the future, as I recognise the renovation will be very expensive, I 100% support robotic lawnmowers - especially those that map the garden and don’t just randomly criss-cross the lawn. They are amazing but aren’t cheap.

Jude, your new home is ADORABLE. And your clever filming and editing is sooo appreciated. I am loving your series! At 64 years old I am moving to a Scottish-inspired town in Aotearoa (New Zealand), hoping to learn to garden and grow my own food, and learn to cook (!), and generally be more self-sufficient (water tanks are in the wish list!) so your series is ADDICTIVE. Keep up the good work! 💪🌟🌳

You do your parents proud. I love watching you work on your property. You are unstoppable 😃
Ahh thank you so much!! I’m having a lot of fun with it!!
Hi I am thoroughly enjoying your videos, whilst feeling so envious!!!
Wishing you all the best

The corrugated Asbestos sheets are cement bonded and will contain very low amounts. (Typically les than 10% so it will be unlicensed) Normally you can dispose of this at your local recycling centre. It will really help with transporting items that you can pick up for repurposing!
