Porsche's Macan continues to be an SUV with the soul - and the engineering - or a sportscar. You might expect it to be fast and family-friendly. More of a surprise is that it's rewarding and, with the right spec, very nearly race-ready in its responses. Yet it'll comfortably take you off road, deal with the school run and cruise down to Chamonix. It's very special. Especially in this improved form.

Background
With the Macan, Porsche was always determined to stretch design boundaries and create the ultimate multi-tasker. A car as ready for a circuit as it would be for a skiing trip, classy enough for the streets of Monte Carlo, soundly sensible on the school run, quietly capable on the rough stuff and potentially manic around Monza. The company's certainly well-placed to create such a thing, claiming the whole 'sporting all-wheel drive car' concept as its own invention. Back in 1900, Ferdinand Porsche designed the Lohner-Porsche racing model with its four electric wheelhub motors. By 1947, the brand was going further, developing a supercharged 12 cylinder 'Type 360' Cisitalia Grand Prix racer that introduced the concept of full four-wheel drive.
What it all led to was the Cayenne large SUV that turned the company's fortunes around earlier this century. And from that to this Macan, a smaller SUV designed to sell alongside it, first launched back in 2014. This revised version, launched in mid-2018, then updated in mid-2021 to create the car we're going to look at here, looks smarter, ditches diesel and improves its technology.
Driving Experience
It's an all-petrol range these days - it's some time now since Porsche offered a diesel in any of its cars. The brand's usual plug-in hybrid tech though, is conspicuous by its absence here. Whatever engine you select, there's more power on offer than before. Most buyers opt for the entry-level 2.0-litre turbo model, available in standard or more focused 'Macan T' forms, either way with 265PS: in this form, the car gets to 62mph in 6.2s and reaches 144mph flat out. If that really isn't fast enough for you, then there's a mid-range Macan S and Macan GTS models, which use an Audi-sourced 2.9-litre V6 unit, respectively with either 380 or 440PS. As before, all models come with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox, with a Sport button to sharpen shift times, throttle response and steering. The GTS gets Sports air suspension which lowers the ride height by 10mm.
Porsche says that the chassis has been further optimised for this updated model, so that the car should respond more directly and with greater sensitivity. It was already a handling leader in its class. As before, four-wheel drive is standard on all variants, although in normal road conditions, 100% of torque is directed to the rear axle. Should momentary slip be detected, a clutch pack locks, which can then send up to 100 per cent of torque to the front axle. There's also a torque vectoring system, while a torque vectoring rear differential is an option. There is a dedicated off-road mode, which optimises the torque split and gearbox shift points to better optimise grip and torque when it gets really slippery. Standard steel springs with passive dampers are standard on the S models, with adaptive dampers an option.
Design and Build
Following updates to the look of this Macan in 2018, Porsche has further refined the styling. The redesigned nose has an exterior colour inlay, plus LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System are now standard, as are 'Sport Design' exterior mirrors. In addition, you also get larger wheels, 19-inchers on the Macan, 20-inches on the Macan T and the Macan S and 21-inches on the Macan GTS. The GTS has a black-finished nose section and a more striking rear diffuser.

Really a detailed and comprehensive car reviews I have even watched on tube. I m currently a 1st 2016 version of Macan GTS 2016 owner and wondering about upgrading to this latest model or Cayenne GTS. This video made me seriously considering just ordering another Macan GTS without Overkilling myself with V8 turbo Cayenne GTS which most of the times I am the only driver/passenger in it.

Its a bad idea for ANY car maker to phase out fossil fuel models in favor of electric. E-Vehicle sales are dropping of quickly because they just don't have the sustainability of gas powered units. It would be wise to offer both types to the consumers to give them options.

Great SUV, we are on our second one (2022 first was a 2019) I am leasing these car... I WOULD NOT WANT TO OWN ONE after the warranty is up
Some owners have had trouble with the transmission (Its a DSG NOT A PDK) and if it goes bad....good luck...no fixes available, buy a new trans for over $20,000

Interesting .. my 85 year-old mother is looking at the Macan with all the driver electronics, air suspension, premium package plus, etc .. I wouldn't get all that over hyped about this SUV. Her big draw to it is it has the right seat height for her to easily get from her walker and swivel into her car.
.. For her she's deciding between this and the 2023 Mercedes GLC43. She has absolutely zero desire for an EV. She doesn't want to screw around having to plug in her car every time she uses it. Not to mention a cord sitting in the middle of a garage. They need to fix that somehow. Maybe a wireless charger or robotic drive over connection.

Hi Thomas, you can spec the Macan with the "Comfort ambient lighting package" that features LED lighting in the door storage compartment, door panels and interior. Hope this helps 👍
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply I do not believe this is an option in the North America market. I stopped by a dealer to ask a few things and was told no ambient lights were available or heads up display, massage chairs, blind side detector was optional…

Sorry to burst your bubble, the Macan will never make it on the Rubicon Trail. You would need proper 4x4, diff lock, center lock, a lift, big meaty tires, wench, probably some DANA solid axels, under armor, etc. The Macan would break in half if it tried to attempt the Rubicon.

I don’t think manufactures should go all electric it just doesn’t make sense, electric cars are much more expensive than their ICE alternatives, they will just price a lot of people out of the market🤦🏼♂️
LOL, this is hilarious. The more I stayed with this video, the more I realise it's not a review but a barefaced promotion.
It's funny to see some of the comments applauding for how thorough this 'review' is when in fact what it's doing is it keeps detailing all the features and prodding the audience to keep upgrading.
I had the first gen Macan turbo, delivered in spring 2015.
Even if you upgrade to a lumbar option, it's just a total waste if you have a slim build. A huge disappointment here.
Sound system - if you're into music while you're driving, go for the Burmester; American hifi system just isn't going to cut it for the kind of music I listen to.
My Macan drove like a dream. I sold it almost three years later. I'm unlikely to buy it again for two reasons - just too many other alternatives out there that I'd like to try - e.g. Grecale Trofeo if not the Alfa equivalent - and, two, unless the driver's seat can be upgraded to a sports seat, the better to hug the sides of my torso so that lumbar support is not so crucial, I won't escape driving for 3-4 hours without a backache.

@@xdude57 I disagree. I like EVs and know they are the future. I even own one. But I am buying a 2023 GTS for a few reasons, one of them being the “last hurrah” of a dying breed. I’ll most likely by the Macan EV down the road. But the GTS will retain it’s value well as many people will want the ICE version. While it’s not an investment, per se, I will have a blast with this vehicle and not have a ton of depreciation when it’s time to go full EV.

Couple things. Getting a S specd the same as a T will cost you 10 grand more. If you look at Porsche stats 35 percent of this cars buyers are women.

Model Y does 0-60 in 3.5. GTS does 0-60 in 3.5. And the Macan doesn’t have diminishing power numbers depending on charge status. The Macan will also crush the Model Y in the higher power bands and in handling. Look. I love EVs. I own one and most are blisteringly quick as is the Model Y. But the Y is not beating a GTS in many races.
The Tesla range goes way down in the cold. ICE engines don’t do that. Also lithium is mined by slaves.

70 percent of the car is unique to Porsche. And it’s a true PDK like in the other modern Porsches.

One has to be dim to prefer synthetic suede that traps dust and dirt to any other option. I am amused how salesman have ben pushing that horrible material as something superior just to help Car makers to dupe consumer and make higher profits. Alcatara my behind. Call it what it is: ugly synthetic cloth reminiscent of suede = cheapest alternative to leather and cloth.
