The door blocking the hood handle has been a standard feature on most VW products for quite a while. As far as I know, it is there to stop you from accidentally opening the hood while driving if your shoe gets caught in the latch when taking it off the clutch pedal. That apparently was a much bigger risk on some older models, where the lever was near the clutch pedal, was a pointy piece of plastic and also pulled towards the driver, so it was rather easy to get the top of a shoe caught in there when pressing the clutch pedal, which would pop the hood when you release it. Looking forward to trip up Hwy 1 last done in 1998 in Boxster.
Absolutely agree with you. Driving the base Macan for almost 8 yrs now (since 2015) and it’s such a nice sporty SUV to own. Previously owned a Porsche 993 manual and a 987 Boxster manual and they all share the same Porsche DNA. This car basically borrows mechanically from the humble Audi Q5 but drives like a different vehicle, which is unbelievable. I have also driven other Macan variants like S, GTS and Turbo from my friends and you are right, they are pretty similar in feel. I reside near the hill side so some modifications are carried out including: 1. Racechip ECU upgrade from 240ps to 300ps 2. Brake upgrades including steel brake lines, endless brake pads & fluid, F & R EBC slotted rotors. 3. Pro-ram high flow air filter 4. Champion iridium spark plugs, APR ignition coil 5. High performance engine oil ( HKS 5w-30) & Rear differential oil (cusco) 6. 5mm spacer on rear wheels to improve stability 7. Turbo muffler delete kit

Since you’re Porsche experienced, are you able to custom build your own on their website and then have it made and delivered to your dealership? Or how downs the “build your own” work
@@thotess More or less what you said. Not all brands allow you to do this, but Porsche does. Go online and build one and it should give you a build code that you can take to the dealership and place your order. You can also choose European delivery, where you fly to Europe to take delivery, drive it over there for a few days or so. Then bring it back to Porsche for them to ship it to the US.

We ordered a Miami Blue base Macan for my wife last fall. I couldn't justify the S being that it's a commuter for her. Plenty enough power from the 2.0L for our needs, and Porsche lets you spec it out with every comfort option that's available on higher trims.
@@MrMustangrick Biggest issue is that my wife realized that remote start is a must-have option for her and no Porsche offers it. No other real issues...I'm not a fan of the base engine, that's about it
Excellent video. We recently went shopping for a base Macan. Our budget was $50,000 but all we could find at that amount were 3-4 year old models. We ended up buying a similarly sized and equipped new Mercedes 300 GLC 4MATIC for 50,000. It is not a Porsche (but merely a lowly Mercedes) but has a premium look, feel and driving experience. Also has a 4 year new car warranty. :)
Build quality is day and night though. I used to drive GLC43 and it was a rattling nightmare in cold weather. Squeaks everywhere - door panels, central console etc. Also let's not forget about GLC tire skipping/crabbing issue, annoying AF. Switched to Audi Allroad and couldn't be happier, a much better car overall.
Great video and extremely helpful. We currently own a Lexus RX350 which we enjoy, and have always wanted to get Porsche SUV. Your details about the base model were very good, and it sounds as if outside of the increased HP the base will work quite well. Figure a 2-3 year old used version will be the smartest thing price as well - let the original owner pay for the wheel and other upgrades and get an extended warranty. Thank you again - super informative!
Hey, Elliott's back! Add my comment to the bunch of others here that missed you, which clearly says we'd all like to see you and your content more often than once a month(ish) 😉
Hey! I appreciate that. I am trying to get back to it. I just have a lot of personal things going on right now that have made it a little difficult to upload regularly. But I am working on it!
I've got the 2020 Base with a ECU tune stage 1 by a tuner here in my country and it is now around 300HP. It does not solve the lowish torque or turbo lag in this car but absolutely kills it from 2000RPM upwards. Apparently it's as fast as the Macan S if not faster as told by me by others that have had this tune, as the engine is lighter upfront. The tune itself is around $1350US so that is much cheaper then say paying $10kUS for the Macan S which is basically the same car except a 3.0 litre engine in it.
My 2008 vauxhall Vectra (UK model) had a speed limiter as standard. Strange that Porsche have only just fitted one. The reason we use them in the UK is because most of our speed cameras have been replaced with average speed cameras. A speed camera snaps your picture at one place only. An average speed camera can monitor your speed over the entire length of the road (which on a motorway can be up to a hundred miles!) In these instances a speed limiter is a life / licence saver
@@ElliottAlvis yup, they certainly are. Get caught in one of them and it's a £100 fine and 3 points on your licence. 12 points in 2 years gets you a year of public transport
This is such a solid review. This is what sold me on the 2020 base I just picked up. White with black interior too. Almost identical spec. I was going back and forth on a first gen S or a second gen base and this video really helped. Coming from a pretty fast g37s, the base still has plenty of power for me and I love the updated infotainment.
I watch a lot of car reviews, and youtube reviewers. I like how you present and kept me engaged, you mentioned relevant details and perhaps things I'd like to know and very descriptive. Subbed, liked, and alerts.. Thanks.
Awesome review! Seems like a great choice and leaving very little on the table to justify buying the much more expensive version. Thanks for sharing Elliott! Something for everyone there!
Problem I have with these is whenever they can get away with it, Porsche will make what should be standard equipment on a car at this price pint options you have to pay thousands for - so nobody is really ever going to get the "base model" - they'll feel they have to add some stuff.
Exceptional video. Please, review Macan S and GTS. I'm looking forward to buy one of them soon as there is shortage now. I live in Los Angeles and commute daily. Cheerio.
Thanks for doing a review of the base model. All the reviews out there are about the S model and I guess Porsche sells more base models than the others.
Since most people aren’t taking their high end cars to a track, the base model packs plenty of power for everyday driving and is not by any means, weak. It’s more than enough to overtake someone on the motorway
It’s very Strange how everyone is so obsessed with 0-100 records as if like we are waking up everyday near a race track! If you drive both cars with the name tag on you can hardly till the difference in power. Being a second or two seconds faster doesn’t mean anything when it comes to daily driving
At least this Porsche's fart is functional. The Tesla's fart is simply a gimmick you activate. A "gassy" Tesla is just immature. But I certainly have missed the Motory Notary and his videos! So glad you are back!!
The speed limiter, very common in Europe, is good for areas (mountains come to mind) with a lot of curves, where you can't maintain a steady speed on cruise control, but want to limit your speed from creeping up too high. Congested highways, with lots of speeding up and slowing down would be another area.
5he limiter is for places like Canada where speeding can get your car impounded. Also, in some other countries, a speeding ticket is based on your wealth so if you are wealthy enough to own a Porsche, it can be expensive
I'm glad you jumped back into doing car reviews. I remember when I watched the review you did of that Chevy Equinox, everyone was pretty quick to jump down your throat for calling out how terrible it was. Don't get me wrong everything is going down hill but defending an Equinox, just to justify to yourself driving a somewhat poorly built cookie cutter SUV that you bought because it was cheap to begin with is just funny. I just rented one and I have to say I was not that impressed, wasn't bad but it sure wasn't good lol, and I hate to get the bill when it inevitably and catastrophically breaks. Really enjoyed!!
And my Macan have installed PASM as option, which provides better handling properties. The stock 18 inch wheels are actually forged alloy wheels ( best for handling and better unsprung weight), where else the upgraded 19 and 20 inches wheels are merely casted wheels.
In india dealerships don’t stock vehicles. When you enter a dealership there’s barely any cars. All the cars that you see are customer cars. Indian dealerships use a build to order system where the cars are built to order
It’s probably amazing to drive, but if I had to get a Porsche, I wouldn’t get the EA888 2.0T that’s in so many other VW products. If it keeps Porsches sales up to keep making sports cars, then good.
We purchased a 2019 base Macan CPO to replace my wife's car. After driving it occasionally for the first few weeks, I was seriously thinking about getting another one for myself!
Used to think an SUV from a sports car company was a dumb idea, but then my neighbor got one and man they look so good in person. Don’t think I’d spend $70k on a base model, but it’s definitely a cool car
I want one! from my understanding all the base models have the VW 2.0 4cylinder, it’s used in almost all VWs those don’t have the oil leaks. The v6 2018 and under is a Porsche engine and have the leak issue. I would guess you can use VW parts for cheaper maintenance.
If I remember correctly, those leaks can be easily fixed by replacing the bolts... AFAIK some people asked this to be done at dealerships as warranty work. No issues after that.
Compartment in the rear hatch is likely for a safety triangle that is required equipment in European models. Also to note, the panoramic sunroof is part of the premium package and not standard.
It’s the EA888 turbo 4 which reaches max torque at 1500 rpms. And, it revs so easily. IMO best engine ever built. I traded my 2018 Macan GTS for the 2021 base and tricked it out with my options. Believe it or not, the GTS had less low end torque than the base model. And, the GTS was loud. No matter what speed, there was always this low end drone sound in the GTS. The base model cruises effortlessly and quietly. There is one thing that is so important when considering the base, which is that the engine must be broken in before it really begins to rev easily. For my new Macan, I would say 7500 miles is about right. Then it becomes a rocket. So much fun to drive.
Update: Just turned 14,000 and now fully broken in. Took it to my dealer and he installed GIAC tune module to add another approx 50 lbs torque. Now even faster and so smooth, effortless.
Dealer lent us a base Macan while our Taycan was in for service. It was so underpowered. I drove it home, and one other time. After the second drive, it just sat in the garage for a week. It's definitely a vehicle for people who seek status through the Porsche emblem.
I'd go for a Tycan base model personally (can't stand SUVs) ... but hey ... As for the speed limiter ... my Volvo V40 has it ... I sometimes (but rarely) use it when the road is busy and I'm on a stretch of road where you'd easily go way over the speed limit if you don't take care ... if the road is busy then cruise control can be a bit cumbersome, so I can manage my speed accordingly and never worry I'm going over the limit ... granted, you really have to get used to the feeling, it is very strange to floor it and only be going 55 km/h.
Elliot, Voido was pretty well done. Suggest in the future you consider comparing the vehicle that you're reviewing to other similar products on the market. Wonder how this Porsche would compare to a similarly priced BWW X3 m40I with 380+ horse power?
Not being able to open the hood is an anti-theft measure. Porsche SUV's are frequently stolen and parted out. Especially in Atlanta and Chicago where they are stolen from valet lots. A.so, 23rd Garage rebuilt a Macan...or maybe a Cayenne...but either way, the hood is around $800. Super expensive. Side panels are also expensive. And if you want to really cry, the headlights are massively expensive.
the reason i believe thats there alvis is too make sure speedy drivers like me even with very less the horsepower but still wanna dream and if one we eventually get a fast car can limit our selves without trying to kill ourself in the process and still have some sort of fun
Thanks! And I wish the TH-cam bucks were flowing, this is still very much a losing game for me financially. This was just a loaner car from the dealership.
Great video, Elliott! So glad you’re back. What a thorough and very informative review of this amazing base model. Gotta admit, the little exhaust fart sounds were pretty cool…lol! And I loved that you featured them again at the end…
Yeah,.. when you are paying $70k for a base model, it better be good. It's the same as if you buy a "base" 911 lol. As you mentioned, no dealer would order the True base model without any option. I walked into a Porsche dealer last summer and they showed me their upcoming Macan list,(non-S) they are basically optioned around $80k. Even in this video, the price is $67k, plus some tax and documents, it is safe to say the Out of the door price is over $70k. Nonetheless, Macan is still going to be my top choice for SUVs. But if I were to buy one, I would look for a used model from 1 or 2 years back.

Just ordered a 2023 Base Macan for LA experience center delivery. Previously owned an S but based on how I drive the base is perfect. Ordered no sunroof, 18 way sport seats heated, pasm, std wheels and tires, premium package 1, thermal glass, rear sun shades, bose stereo. pre paid maintenance, Under $68,000. Looking forward to trip up Hwy 1 last done in 1998 in Boxster.
Nice Dave! Congratulations! That'll be a blast.
Perfect spec
Absolutely agree with you. Driving the base Macan for almost 8 yrs now (since 2015) and it’s such a nice sporty SUV to own. Previously owned a Porsche 993 manual and a 987 Boxster manual and they all share the same Porsche DNA. This car basically borrows mechanically from the humble Audi Q5 but drives like a different vehicle, which is unbelievable. I have also driven other Macan variants like S, GTS and Turbo from my friends and you are right, they are pretty similar in feel. I reside near the hill side so some modifications are carried out including:
1. Racechip ECU upgrade from 240ps to 300ps
2. Brake upgrades including steel brake lines, endless brake pads & fluid, F & R EBC slotted rotors.
3. Pro-ram high flow air filter
4. Champion iridium spark plugs, APR ignition coil
5. High performance engine oil ( HKS 5w-30) & Rear differential oil (cusco)
6. 5mm spacer on rear wheels to improve stability
7. Turbo muffler delete kit
How has the reliability been? Any major concerns? Thanks for the list of those mods.
Thanks for the video Elliot. I'll dream about owning a Porsche as even the base model is too much for me.
Thanks for watching Jim!
Keep on dreaming, sometimes they do come true! Fingers crossed
*Imagine how thrilled I was to see you in my feed this morning!*
Glad to be here Will!
Great job Elliott! I love my base Macan. She's my 2nd Porsche. I promised myself that I'd own another Porsche before I died. I previously owned a '75 Silver Anniversary 911S which I sadly sold years ago. The Macan doesn't perform like the 911S, but she's a blast to drive.
I have Lava Orange 718 Boxster S and Agathe Grey Macan 2018 2000cc Base model.
I really love Porsche and I want new Chayenne, but it is very expensive 😢
We ordered a Miami Blue base Macan for my wife last fall. I couldn't justify the S being that it's a commuter for her. Plenty enough power from the 2.0L for our needs, and Porsche lets you spec it out with every comfort option that's available on higher trims.
That’s such a beautiful color. I’m glad you guys are enjoying your Macan. Thanks for watching Michael!
Almost true
Any issues so far?
Hey, that’s not a bad choice at all Rob! Glad you got something you like!
Love our 2020 gLC 300 premium
@@ElliottAlvis it's all good, real life comes first! 👍
67k Pheww... A pretty penny. But if you need the badge, then you need it...
Good to see you again, Elliott!
Thanks Paul! I'm trying to get back to it.
Great video ! I’ve been searching for a videos that shows the best and worst years of the Macan to avoid and which trim level is the most reliable.
Great to see another upload 👍
In the UK a few cars I've had have the LIM function. Lots of speed cameras here 😏
Thanks Nick! I like the speed limiter function, it's just not something we see around here a lot lol
@@ElliottAlvis you guys can always pop across to "mexico" to have your speed thrills 😄
It legit sounds like its farting, I'm dying.😂🤣☠️☠️
It seriously does! 💨
I was in the grey BRZ at the starting line in that autocross video! What a day that was!
Ah yes, what a day. Lol.
14k views in just 2 weeks. You're getting there buddy! Love the channel.
Hey, thanks man! I appreciate that.
Great video and the Volvo looking good in the back 🔥
I've got the 2020 Base with a ECU tune stage 1 by a tuner here in my country and it is now around 300HP.
Where did you do that modes?
Wow the same base model car would cost €104.673 in the Netherlands, mainly because of local taxes. Keep those video’s coming Elliot!
Enjoy that free healthcare. JK we love you guys.
I bought one with all the options and it is worth 136,000 euros new.😂
Man, that engine bay needs the Simple Green treatment!
It sure does! If it were mine, you know that would happen.
Macans are great cars! Very underrated.
Totally man! I know you know 😉
Glad you are back! I’ve driven a couple of these and I was really impressed as well. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Oh wow, those average speed cameras sound like my nightmare!
@@ElliottAlvis yup, they certainly are. Get caught in one of them and it's a £100 fine and 3 points on your licence. 12 points in 2 years gets you a year of public transport
I left the country to come live in Texas where speed cameras are…illegal 😅 I don’t miss those stupid average speed checks
He’s back with a quirks and features video.
Except, Elliott doesn't have a juvenile lisp.
I found this review really helpful and wasn't just constantly saying get the bigger engine model
Glad to hear that man! Congratulations on your new Macan, and thanks for watching!
How’s maintenance been on it? I’m looking at getting a 2020 macan s
Thanks for the run down … I just opted for a 1 owner, Cali --16 Macan S
Nice! Congratulations on your purchase!
Thanks as always Ant!
Cheerio.
Will do as soon as I can!
@@ElliottAlvis Thank you.
The flap on the inside of the tailgate is probably for an emergency triangle that is a legal requirement to carry in several European countries.
That makes sense Colin! Thanks.
i have a 2017 macan. awesome car. it may be the cheapest porsche but as a college student its got me hooked on the brand for life.
Excellent review for those of us who want to have a Porsche class car without blowing tons of money.
Thanks for doing a review of the base model. All the reviews out there are about the S model and I guess Porsche sells more base models than the others.
Gorgeous Porsche, Elliot. I can't imagine your insurance company allowing you anywhere near an SCCA autocross course, tho!
Well, it wasn’t my insurance’s problem luckily. But I know what you mean! Lol
Being a second or two seconds faster doesn’t mean anything when it comes to daily driving
exactly 👍
At least this Porsche's fart is functional. The Tesla's fart is simply a gimmick you activate. A "gassy" Tesla is just immature. But I certainly have missed the Motory Notary and his videos! So glad you are back!!
Thanks Michael!
More great automotive content from Elliott. Love it!
Thanks!
Oh man, I bet that would get expensive in a hurry!
@@ElliottAlvis I'm pretty sure the most expensive speeding ticket ever was handed out in Sweden, well over $100k, Rj in Oz
I have the 2022 base model in the same color and I love it
Awesome!
Great video, and surprisingly a great car!
Thanks for watching Jarle!
And my Macan have installed PASM as option, which provides better handling properties.
The stock 18 inch wheels are actually forged alloy wheels ( best for handling and better unsprung weight), where else the upgraded 19 and 20 inches wheels are merely casted wheels.
Hey Elliott, great video, ur description of those Porsche was cool, job well done!😉
Thanks Charles!
In india dealerships don’t stock vehicles. When you enter a dealership there’s barely any cars. All the cars that you see are customer cars. Indian dealerships use a build to order system where the cars are built to order
I was thinking about getting a poverty spec Macan a month ago or so. Ended up getting the newly refreshed Lexus NX350 f sport with all the options.
Nice!
Super glad you like it Elliott cool car....Thanks ....Shoe🇺🇸
Thanks Steve!
It’s probably amazing to drive, but if I had to get a Porsche, I wouldn’t get the EA888 2.0T that’s in so many other VW products.
If it keeps Porsches sales up to keep making sports cars, then good.
Well said. This is the gateway drug for other Porsche models for a lot of people too.
@@ElliottAlvis Just like the Levante lol
The g3 or the fsa1 one?
Oh yeah, a great video once again!
Thanks Milan!
I have one on the way, eagerly awaiting delivery.
That’s exciting! Congratulations!!
Just glad you didn’t trash it too hard!
All you gotta do is drive one and it’ll change your opinion on how good an SUV can be!
I ordered a base model on Saturday and it came to 90k, could’ve ordered a base GTS for that money but it’s all about the options with Porsche…
I have a 2018 macan base and love it
Awesome Mike! Glad you are enjoying your Macan. Thanks for watching!
The title just like the song has no bass. 🤣🤣
Why the lack of videos recently: Because Elliot is easily distracted by cats :)
Haha. Yeah. Something like that!
I want one! from my understanding all the base models have the VW 2.0 4cylinder, it’s used in almost all VWs those don’t have the oil leaks.
Good points. Low end torque is what most people use most of the time, I think.
I also notice my Macan engine works better after I drove to nearly 10k miles. Just felling better and better with this lovely car.
Update: Just turned 14,000 and now fully broken in. Took it to my dealer and he installed GIAC tune module to add another approx 50 lbs torque. Now even faster and so smooth, effortless.
Oh yeah! A new Elliott video!
Heck yeah!
I wonder if that mystery storage space in the tailgate would have held a collapsible warning triangle sign for euro use?
The Taycan is fantastic! And yeah, the speed limiter thing is weird, but I do like it! Thanks for watching!
That hood opening situation is carried over from the q5 and other Audis 🤓
Elliot,
Voido was pretty well done. Suggest in the future you consider comparing the vehicle that you're reviewing to other similar products on the market. Wonder how this Porsche would compare to a similarly priced BWW X3 m40I with 380+ horse power?
Thanks for the tip Bion. The BMW would undoubtedly be faster, but some people might rather have the Porsche 🤷🏻♂️
wow didnt know this was the same engine as the golf R but thats dope
Folks who don't get base models, don't get base models.
Your username checks out
Not being able to open the hood is an anti-theft measure.
That makes sense Clif! I'm actually surprised the hood isn't more!
Great info-mation video - the tire inflator is inside the trunk driver-side panel.
13:00 had me dying laughing. Perfect sound to describe it 😂
Lol I wish I had made a bigger deal about it! The sound came out better than I expected!
the reason i believe thats there alvis is too make sure speedy drivers like me even with very less the horsepower but still wanna dream and if one we eventually get a fast car can limit our selves without trying to kill ourself in the process and still have some sort of fun
Very good review. Very detailed, right down to the shift fart. Are the YT bucks finally flowing in or was this a loaner/rental for the review? 😀
Thanks Mom!
Elliott, please, you HAVE to tell me where you got that T-Shirt, I need to get one for my girlfriend! lol
I think my mom got it for me honestly 😂 but she certainly got it online. Wish I could help you more!
very interesting Video, thanks
Yeah,.. when you are paying $70k for a base model, it better be good.
Would be helpful if you said your height when showing the rear seat roominess. Also, nice shirt!
Thanks for this! Truly impacted my decision making!!
Glad you found it helpful Onteaya!
why do you have chef johns intro music?? :D love it btw
Somebody say only carrera911, cayman and boxter are real Porsche .. but when u only can have one car and need to take care family , u will know this is the best suv Porsche 🫡👍
