Ever asked how do I start a home care agency? In this video you will learn how to research and apply for the license in Florida. This will vary just a bit from state to state but you can expect it to be very similar. I have recently moved to Florida and thought I might as well expand on my company and again start a home care agency... sharing the process from beginning to end right here on ENTP LIFE. My vision for this agency is to solve the problem of discharge planning to reduce hospital readmission's and improve the quality of life for those who are chronically ill.
As this series progresses you will be exposed to everything you need to know to start a home care agency, my approach to business, and everything you will need to succeed in this industry.
For those of you thinking what is a home care agency the answer is quite simple. A home care agency is company that provides health care personnel in the homes of patients/clients in need of Nursing Care, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Assistance with Daily Living Activities, Companionship & Housekeeping. The industry is usually divided between skilled and unskilled professionals or as Medicaid and Medicare Agencies. The type of agency you start depends on your State's regulations and the scope of services you plan to provide.
Join me on my journey of starting a home care agency and taking that company public. This is the life of an ENTP

Great advice, great information. thank you so much.
I have 10 year plus experience from CNA to LPN and now as RN. I have been thinking launching a home health agency but do not know how to start. My husband tells me i have the experience and knowledge as a RN and I could be doing home care and become an entrepreneur. I believed I have the qualifications, knowledge and caring for the elderly.
What city are you in? I also suggest you consider starting with a nursing agency. Easier to start, lucrative, and a great start point if Home Health Is the end goal. Send me an email at info@entplife.com
Great information, I am chiming in from Ohio and currently working on starting my own provider agency, starting with serving individuals with cognitive disabilities. DODD charges $800 hundred dollars for agency providers. If you are serving the elderly, I believe its more and if you are serving the mentally ill it is less. Yes, you are correct to start with Health and Human Services or Department of Health to find vital information for starting your own agency. I have many years of hands on experience, in various states as well. I am currently working on acquiring funds (savings and business credit) and creating an employee handbook, which I got the outline from a human resource website--of course you'll have to use the local regulations from the state far as HIPPA and specific issues relative to home health and provider agencies in your respective state.
ok thanks for sharing
Proud to see a fellow Haitian doing their thing . I’ve always wanted to go in to home health care . I thought becoming a crna was the only way to make a lot of money , but I’m wrong . I just started a trucking company with my first truck and someday will look into starting a home health agency . Just gotta figure out where to start . Plus since I’m Haitian and Indian . I can reach more of the Indian population since they don’t tend to seek out , out side care due to misinformation .
Indian community is underserved mainly because they assume family will help fill that gap or if affluent enough hire a servant. Good luck with everything and keep me posted on your journey.
@@Karl__Pierre thank you , but not all Indians are that way . There are subsets but they will not hire a servant unless they are in India . Most do depend on family but sometimes there is a fine line between what family can do for a family member . Thank you for setting the standard for what true nursing entrepreneurship looks like . Hopefully I can learn a thing or two from watching your videos . I wish you much and continued success in the coming future

We are located in Miami Dade.
I'm in Fort Lauderdale if you need strategic help for growth, or coaching feel free to setup a consultation. I'm glad the videos are helpful. Medical or non medical?
@@Karl__Pierre we do both but primarily non-medical (LTC), our medical patients are about 10-12 a year while non medical is about 75-80 a year
Thanks. I am a NP in CA and really would like to open an agency. I am just getting started so these videos are so helpful! Did you start out accepting medicare right away or first private? I am unsure on what to charge for client fees or pay!
Hey Allie! Shoot me an email by using the contact form on my homecare software site www.ontimeits.com there I can get way more detailed and see how I can address all your questions. I started in NY as a medicaid/private duty agency. This adventure that I am on in florida is my first stab at the medicare side of it. That being said to research rates would require you do basic market research. Call 10 agencies in your area at "ask for a friend" what the rates are hahaha. Then do the same asking about pay rates as an aide. With 20 calls you'll get your market data and know how to price yourself and how much to pay your staff. Medicare rates are published.
Hi there! Love your videos. I'm in Florida as well. I'm looking for information to start up a registry (not agency) do you have details more on this by chance?
Unfortunately no but that information will be on the ahca page

Hi Karl I own a Medical billing Company that specializes in Home Health, Nurse Registries, ALF's in South Florida. I began my own company as i worked with Simply Health Plan LTC (Long Term Care) for 5 years and saw across the board in Tri-County Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beaches how little these provider new on how to stay compliant and bill accurately especially when EVV (Electronic Visit Verification) is concerned. I am now wanting to expand and looking into Home Health Agency i want to applaud you on how detailed and explicit you are in your videos i have not seen all of them I am actually on Episode 4 of How to start a home care agency but WAY TO GO!!!!!!!! May i make a suggestion not sure if you have a video on this yet but it would be a GREAT idea to do a video on EVV and state requirement on it, also how the specific aggregators such as HHHAExchange and Netsmart (previously named Tellus) differ and how they work. Once again Thank you
Thanks for the suggestion. We are actually updating our internal software to address such. Is your medical billing company still active. Would love to chat with you and see of there is potential to collaborate shoot me an email to Karl@ontimeits.com
Hi @@Karl__Pierre would love the opportunity to speak with you! just sent you an email!
@@Karl__Pierre @karl_Pierre the software Aaidebook how will that be integrated with the services that will need to be EVV? i am looking forward in speaking with you.
@user-ry8ps1sm2l the software is ontime. The integration with EVV which has already been configured for HHA exchange is simple...it's just pushing the necessary components. Our app captures the same data just pushed into whatever portal requires it, in the format set by the platform. EVV is all about the capture point. We capture via mobile apps and sooner RFID.

Cool have you looking into licensing yet?
I am wondering do Home health agencies need liability insurances? If so, how much does it cost?
Thank you so much for your time and sharing valuable informations!

Hi, I’m Tania, RN from NY! I love your content, it’s very thorough. I am in the beginning phases of it all so it does seem a bit overwhelming. But I guess that feeling comes with all new ventures. Just a few questions. Generally, does a CHAA or LHCSA have lower start up costs? I’m trying to decide what type of home health care agency I would like to start. It seems like you said a CHHA may have great payouts for professional services but may be short term and LHCSAs may some nursing services but mostly personal care services but these services are likely to be provide on a long term basis?
Please tell me if I’m incorrect. If so a LHCSA seems most appealing and may be most beneficial on a long term basis.
What other things should I consider in making this decision?
Hi Tania, Are you aware of the application restrictions in NY. Basically you have to start your agency in a hard to service location or buy a dormant license, especially if in NYC. That's more important than the start up costs. NYC LHCSA license sells for 300k these days and CHHAs forget it those are rarely issued and not the business you want. Your best bet is to find someone with a dormant license and buy it or partner with them. If you want some more help or guidance in healthcare entrepreneurship you can book a call with my team at www.passiveworkforce.com
@@Karl__Pierre yes I was actually just looking at the counties with and without a need. I live in Westchester County and was hoping to service that area but it like I would have to provide a rebuttal for the presumption to no need and honestly that sounds like a long shot! Does obtaining a dormant license involve the same steps?
I have enjoyed your videos. I have been in the medical field for years and I decided I wanted to start a Home Care Agency. I wrote my policies and became licensed and it took years. My agency is We Do Care Home CAre Agency in North Carolina. The problem is I need help becoming business oriented and finding clients its been about a year now and we just became Medicaid approved etc. But I don't know where to start and how to market to get clients and its stressing me out. Please tell me that you can give us some guidance.
This is as simple as ask and receive. Where do you think patients are in high concentration. Hospitals, Doctors offices, senior centers. You literally need to talk to people and let them know who you are. Then follow-up.
I appreciate your information. I am establishing a non-medical home health agency is Philadelphia, Pa. I hired a consultant but I am not completely satisfied.
No consultant will be perfect. What I can help you with is your software and coaching how close are you to getting licensed?
Hi, I'm just now starting watching your videos on Home Health Care Agencies, and they are very helpful. Do you happen to know of where I can find info or books on how to run the business? Like day to day operations, methods on how to find patients, payments, etc. I just don't know exactly where to start. I've hired a consultant but they are not very helpful so I'm teaching myself at this point. Anything would be helpful, Thank you.
Most of this should be covered in your policy and procedures. What state are you in? Have you seen my live videos?
@@Karl__Pierre I'm in Texas and no I have not seen you live videos. I'll tune in!
Man I have so many questions for you but don’t know where to start. Like being independent or franchises? I have been looking around at different owners like yourself and wondering do you think courses are worth it? Or can you master this on your own? Thanks again for the info bro!!
My thoughts are you need to know that margins are thin in home health. 10-15% on average. That being said the franchisees usually get you for about 3% on your revenue meaning your margin will be 7-12%. The positive about the franchise is it greatly reduces your trial and error or starting on your own. It's faster to get started faster to get rolling. Not all companies are created equal. At this stage I personally wouldn't do a franchise but if I were just starting and had the funds I would consider it. It's all a matter of choice.
Starting in Mississippi
Cool
What is your opinion on residential assisted living? Pretty much investing in residential homes and hiring private duty non medical caregivers at the home to assist with activities of daily living at a residential home not a large facility. I am an RN in Texas and I am trying to get into entrepreneurship thank you so much for all the info!
I think it's a good idea and have considered the same. It all comes down to what are your state regulations and local regulations related to assisted living facilities. Some states have limits on how many residents before license is required. You will want to check with your state department of health to determine what is possible. Once you have the answer reach back out.
I thought of this as well.
Hi. I am illiterate when it comes to this arena, but I want to learn. When do people on your “team” start getting paid? Is it once business takes off or would it be part of the start up budget? Do board members get paid? Thank you!
up to you on how to design your compensation. I and Laura are not drawing a salary until we hit 5M in revenue.

Question for your Accountant. I would consult with them on this matter
Hello Karl, when you start the application process for home care agency, do you have to use office address ? Or can you submit it with a residential address and update later? Can you clarify that, thank you!

I’ve spoken to one consultant however he is not located in Florida and I’m not sure if it would be a good fit since he is in another state. I also verifies with the department of state to see if their company was legit and it is. I’m ready to start the process but I’m looking for a good team that is willing to put in the time. I checked the moratorium like you advised and Florida had one until July 29 2020. Would that cause me to take longer when I apply for my license? Kinda of an odd question, but is it possible to start up an agency, hiring all the right people and management, and then letting the management team take control of the duties of running the business, while i am able to sit back and reap the rewards? Especially if i don't know much about, well, anything?
Yeah but you'd need two things. Good hiring skills to indentify and recruit the talent that can execute and the cash to fund that operation until the business can fund itself....better angle would be to buy an operating business with management in place

I am interested in speaking with you. I have a inquiry about a mentorship. I am currently into Real Estate and also a Business Owner Located in the Ohio. Home care speaks to me. I think I found a purpose in this space. I'd greatly appreciate your help.
Hey Harley, would love to help. Go to my website to book a mentoring sessions.
I am interested in this video , very informative , is there a phone no to call?
For?
Texas has the same requirements but it’s $1750 to file. Only if it’s just personal assistance, will it not require a supervising nurse & alternative.
My question is how do you determine how much of the percentage the other 3 positions gets when you hire them? And how do you get that team to commit in the beginning when you’re trying to get licensed in order to operate? Are they being paid?
Honestly you have to decide how much you want to give up. There are videos giving ideas but ultimately depends on the scale of the project and time vested. I would give equity based on time and financial milestones to keep folks committed. Also it might make sense for them to come in with capital. My founding team draws a salary.
I’m interested to open home care agency in Florida but need someone help

Hi ENTP, I'm a nurse. I'm thinking to open an agency that could provide nursing assistance and nurses. Other people are saying that I need to have at least 100k on my account.
This is true. This is what medicare requires if you are expecting to be a medicare provider. The idea is you need money to float your operation as you wait for Medicare to reimburse. If you were doing private duty or Medicaid this may not matter as much. What state are you in and what sort of agency?
@@Karl__Pierre thank you for responding, I'm currently in Florida, Miami, I'm waiting for this virus to pass. I'm planning on open a home health care agency where I would go to provide care at their house. Thank you so much for your answer.
@@nadinelouis6210 ok Nadine. Since you are in Florida like I am, what I am describing and what you have heard about the 100k requirement is true. That is the recommendation.
How do i get in touch with you???
