I hit up 5dev last year about my cranks and some concerns I had. They sent me the new ones. Haven't seen anything bad about the new ones. i had black ones and they got thrashed. Now i have the silver ones and i'm happier. I like the brand. they make cool shit. I want the stem.
Great Video! Stoked you got the cranks. Can you send us some Lulu's? Ours are see through and well... you know. It's awkward. 😅
I'll see what I can do, y'all are all size 0 right? 🍑
Always a good day when Froride posts
I did put half a cup of amaretto in my coffee for the occasion 🎉
Silver on silver...and yes...definitely warranty replacement.
@9:11 CRACKED
Man, I hope your strong backbone never wilts. It likely won’t, even with TH-cam fame, pretend sponsorships (paid adverts), or any of the typical BS. Your inherent advantage, besides having balls and not being afraid to sling them out at a moment’s notice, is you’re not North American and seemingly can’t be bought and paid for.
Nuff respect!
Send the silver 30t back, and ask for a silver 32t.
Also, you are so right on the whole GMBN thing. Boring presenters, presenting boring content, far too often! That boy Blake needs to set up on his own.
Legend😂
Digging the conspiracy theory.
I have the same 5Dev set up on my cranks as your old ones. Are you going to do a riding update on the new cranks for if they feel any different? I love knowing your perspective!
Sup Manti!
Yeah I will make a riding update down the line for sure, when Iv'e ridden the new ones enough.
You should demand gold cranks to match the chainring and pedals. The silver looks good. If you weighed more, the old cranks probably would have failed by now.
First you got on my nerves just by showing your hands etc, but you win me off later in video and I became a fan. Also, I think I'm gnna buy this cranks, they look so good.
Haha I'm intrigued, how did my hands piss you off? 😁
@@Frorideism i dont know :) maybe because it is supposed to be funny, and it kinda is, but it didnt match my vibe, as my vibe was low. And I also didn't understand yout style, which I do now. My fault I guess. But great vid ;)
No harm done at all dude, I hear you - vibe is key
Just interested 👌
Honestly the just hands thing is more about me not wanting to have a public face, it does add a certain style though,
Anyhow! Thanks for watching my man
I don't have a snarky comment for you today but you'll get this instead: Why did the bicycle fall over? It was two-tired!
somebody get this guy a beer
You think I'm too tense? 🤖
@@Frorideism no I meant for doing a good job! Have I been using this expression wrong all this time? 😆
Imo they should have waited releasing the cranks until they have tested them properly. But mistakes happen, maybe they were too exited, so this is why I always wait until I know a company got the kinks sorted. Unless it's an unique product I know is gonna be good. Or just have to try, like shoes.
To me it looked like you had stress cracks developing, great they replaced it before it failed. I've seen comments that the holes make stress points and it eventually will fail. I don't know. I guess it depends on the loads it gets and design.
Definitely use Loctite 243 on the bolts to make a bond between the bolts and the crank, this will keep it secure even trough rapid temp changes and hard riding, but of course eventually it wears out, and might break the bond on a massive impact.
Why nix new Cranks of the old one is Beatles the Same and lighter.
5Dev is so good at marketing they paid this guy to say he's not paid. hey 5dev, i'm easily bought off too. Send me your ti cranks. I'll pretend i'm not paid for and i'll ride the shit out of them. 🤑🤑
Some people keep forgetting aluminium has no fatigue limit.
ELI5: You can break aluminium by lightly gazing it a billion times.
Can you accurately measure the original 5DEV cranks eye to eye? They might not have catastrophically failed but I think yours are starting to stretch.
Mmmmm, yes
covering their as or not they looked out set you more than straight like theyre susposed to be thankful they could have shafted you like many other would
Are 5-Dev cranks forged ?
I’ve seen this whole thing before, kooka, Machine Tech, Titus, Cook Brothers tons more… if the grain structure isn’t “realigned” though the forging process it’s just a timebomb.
I think it’s cnc’d
@8:29 🤣🤣🤣
They send the new crankset because like it or not you are apart of their marketing of the product.
100%
Like he said, they're great at marketing their product.
Overpriced stuff?
I have the same first gen 5Dev crank set. I wanted aluminium cranks for better durability over my previous experiences with carbon cranks. Modern machined billet cranks look great and function well. But after learning more about duribilty of a forged aluminium cranks vs machined billet aluminium cranks I have lost confidence in machined billet cranks. Those stress lines on your old set of cranks, definely the appropriate time to change out the crankset. The subject unlocked a new fear of having a crank fail while riding on some rocky section of trail.
Is already crack.
Thanks for sharing. Fair bet this was a case of 5Dev covering their ass in getting a new crank to you before the old one broke. And good timing too, I definitely see a crack in the left crank, visible @12:44. Count yourself lucky, those cranks' days were numbered! This is so much better than pinkbike or gmbn for your spot-on real world takes.
5 months in, any real life, non-biased, nonchainringbribe ride reviews for the new R Type KRENKS?
No I always try and stay as subjective and financially biased as possible,
But I can try:
They have not broken yet 👀
Put the old ones on until they snap😂😂 they look a 6ft drop away from death

Is it just me or did the old cranks look cracked AF????"!?"??"?"?""?"??"!111111
People still be buying these over Eewings idk why
they look craked to me bro
yep
Definitely had a crack in the one
Totally… his thumb was touching a crack on the left hand crank arm… how can he not see it!?
@@sharpy182I'm gonna quote the note book and say it's not that simple 😩
That "crack" that's clearly visible in the footage, is not actually a crack.
It's a line where the clear coat used to be.
The suposed crack is more so evident in the alu being more bright in that same area,
Most likely unrelated to that clear coat line
@@Frorideism the crank might be flexing there causing the clear to delaminate
SRAM GX Al cranks are the best. About $120.
Scenix FM3 are the same, 70$ on Ali...
to be fair these look like gx lunar cranks that have lost some weight
@@trailfork7815 The big difference is GX are forged, 5Dev are billet. Also, the design of the 5Dev crankarms near the spindle is poor and 5Dev was careless with their FEA and testing, hence the revision.
@@davec3568 true, they still refuse to acknowledge there was an issue with the v1's and quietly released the thicker version
Agreed. I went from fancy carbon cranks too GX and definitely prefer them. Have 165mm but would prefer 160 (w 28t chainring).
Do yourself the favor...be reminded that anything machined that has holes in it is definitely not optimized for leverage forces. If you need Ti cranks then opt for Ewings or other Euro made similar cranks. They will be able to take many hits and survive almost anything and they cost less, weigh less and to can be anodized. I so want the 5 DEV Ti stem but that has not even been subjected to and ISO safety test of any sort...like most stems are hit with a 200,000 to 300,000 twist rapid twisting and flexing using handlebars by machine. If you watched the Olympic track race where the Ti handle bar failed it happened so fast it was crazy. That was 3dprinted Ti track bar of the same grade if Ti, but my point is you end up begging for testing.
Our Ti Stem exceeds ISO Tests. We also have a stem test rig in house.
1:44 That looks like a crack to me!
Probably snapped the cranks and died
They were definite cracks.
New cranks are anodized otherwise they will oxidize, that's why they appear matt finish.
seeing how a lot of people are saying these break and 5dev revising the design only solidifies that there was a design flaw in the first gen
I liked the looks of 5dev cranks and most other parts they make but I absolutely don't "feel" them, the huge marketing push reminds me of absolute crap. I might be crazy but I don't trust these companies like mucoff or AB, 5dev I'm still on the fence. It look bad tho, oval chainrings? C'mon man (insert Biden pic)
Yo, this channel has been too quiet. What’s the deal?
Had a run-in with the cartel, will be back soon
@@Frorideism LETS FUCKIN GOOOOOOOOO
BLACK
BLACK IS ALWAYS BETTER
What I don't understand is that if the theory you are saying is correct (and it seems so looking at the comments), is that brands should know we have internet nowadays. We talk with each other. So, IF the first gen was bad structurally, just admit it and replace the first gen with the new one for everybody who asks about it. This WILL give more credits and respect, than silently replacing the old ones because they knew they were going to crack eventually...
Take a small "hit" to gain more in the long run VS try to hide something small, and loose a lot in the long run.
Jeez bro just ride the SOB
But then there wouldn't be a video, nor your comment or this reply. Actually.. You're right, I fully agree.
Frightening.
just buy slx
Huge crack in the crank arm phew. Maybe time for the Ti cranks lol
They should have made a "v2" version of the cranks and published a proper root cause analysis around why v1 was breaking. Instead they rely on the classic STFU and take a replacement and don't ask questions. Sleazy company that is full of it. Classic instagram sensational product.
Better video title... TH-camR'S ASS BOUGHT AND PAID FOR BY 5DEV
Haha yeah I don't know dude, I feel like the other people who get sent parts almost worth 1k in total won't make a video like this.
In fact they haven't, because they want more free stuff.
Goal was to stay objective and call out what ever needs to be called out, without whistleblowing.
Yours truly
/A working girl
I 100% agree and appreciate your objectivity but like you said 5Dev is excellent at marketing.
Keep up with the excellent content and I’m sure you’ll get some more free shit.
Ikke dårlig til å være en svenske faen :-p
Ta det lugnt nu bestefar 😘😁
@@Frorideism 🤣🤣🤣 👍
Every Bmx crank is better than these weird mtb brand cranks.
Chromoly all day
The comments here are a dumpster fire. Every brand is using influencers now to market. Every mtb part in the world breaks. I'm in the middle of dealing with my sram dropper post. that's a 900 dollar part. this guy is obviously a micro influencer. He's just trying to be a "cool bro i'm not paid i'm authentic" dude until he gets enough followers to get free shit. This is a dumb video. total click bait. dude got a warranty crank and is trying to troll everyone for views.
Welcome to my comment section it rarely makes any sense, which I love tbh
Yeah valid points for sure,
It's a bit of a catch 22 though, either I talk openly about it or I don't, either way I'd can get called out.
Out of curiosity, in what way do you think the topic could have been presented without you getting the microinfluencer who wants free stuff vibe from it?
Edit: Haha just realized that can 100% look like bait to have you explain how I can fake it better. 🤔😁
Up to you if you want to reply
@@Frorideism you can't. everyone who posts content on youtube gives that vibe. It's a catch 22. 😝
@@BobbieRingo-qf8qu We're all doomed 😁
As someone with almost 4decades of aerospace machining and quality control including ndt (non destructive testing) I can say that definitely looks like a surface discontinuity ie: crack. Definitely do not ride on them again!
I have 6 decades of aerospace machining and qc work and i invented the space shuttle. I can say that definitely is not a crack.
As someone with 2 minutes of experience at reading comments about 10 decades of experience I can confidently deduct that these things are definitely made out of some form of metal
so they are cracked, so they are not fine and the criticism is justified
I think the answer's in the timeline.
That's just the clear coat flaking. You can easily see that.
@@Live_Loam_Lap-po4qt I certainly am unable to
@@Live_Loam_Lap-po4qt mr froride propably has the best conditions to judge that so I can be wrong
@@Live_Loam_Lap-po4qt nah bro, at 12:44 you can clearly see a crack started, no doubt those old cranks were toast.
Please stop with the "funny" clips, it's getting really old.
What funny clips? The gnbn was classic
Doesn't look like warranty to me - they have been reluctant to give people a warranty replacement so why would they give you one and two more chain rings? That is bs I think. So they made light and overpriced cranks that failed and didn't do much damage control and now they offer a improved version that they tried to sneak in as a more heavy duty product and now they are still overpriced, not as light anymore, still look good and might just work. I'd call that a let down.
They were always heavily pushed by major TH-camrs so to me thats a sign of a shit product
