- 5Dev Components are relatively new faces in mountain biking, so, whilst visiting the Sea Otter Classic in their home state of California, we thought we'd drop in to find out more about who they are and what makes them tick! The founders, of 5th Axis and 5Dev founders Steve Grangetto and Chris Taylor, are pioneers of machining, taking humble blocks of aluminium and titanium and creating masterpieces! They've put parts on Mars attached to Rocket Ships, and now, they're putting parts on the Rocket Ships seen at World Cups such as Neko Mulally's Frameworks project.

It was a pleasure meeting the GMBN Crew at Sea Otter. Thanks so much for taking the time to tell the 5DEV story. Behind the scenes at the factory next?
❤
Can i have a set off cranks? For a laugh
It was rad to meet you guys in person too! I loved this, I'm excited to see more from you guys!
If I could afford I would probably get some of those fancy&special parts for my MTB but unfortunately my enduro is all I have and I cannot even upgrade it to 1x12 , all I have is 1x11 , 160mm RCT3 Rockshox Pike, Fox Float 150mm rear, rockshox reverb dropper post, cant even afford to bleed it because I definitely know that my Guide R 4 piston brakes from Sram needs it immediately yet i havent done that and the cheapest of all, changing brake pads and valves - cannot even do that since i broke my leg and got unemployed and now back recovered but not fully but it is complicated, mann i would love to ride on my enduro with some upgrades and a full servicing....
@@henrybatson8455 5Dev cranks have been snapping from normal riding and their customer service is atrocious and disrespectful. Avoid at all cost.
DEV - DEVastate your bank account
Ferrari price tag for cranks. Thanks not looking to show off my cranks to people. Just want to ride it, break it then change it, ride it again
5DEV always there to make every dentist’s bike stand out from the crowd.
350 for cranks is not expensive.
@@Flutiedb anything over 145mm is $500 lol. And they snap easily.
@@323johnnybravo They aren't budget parts by any means, but they do not snap often. They are being raced in downhill at the world cup level and not breaking.
Very happy owner of their awesome cranks. I was just sick of the standard 170mm cranks on my small frame. They never made sense and felt terrible. Grabbed 145ers and my knees have never felt fresher!
This was such a good watch, I've been following Niko and his frameworks project since it went live and I've loved learning so much about his process, this was just such a great deep dive into the machining process, a delight to wake up to! Wish doddy had joined on this one too, always love his tech insight and reactions to innovative designs
The three most expensive industries: military, aerospace and bike :)) Great looking products :D
Great looking but weak AF! I've seen too many of them snap so they seem to be best suited for rich posers
@@mtbsieppo I ride MTB Downhill myself and im a CNC Machinist. Their Parts all look solid and their Geometry makes sense strenght wise, if used the right Material they shouldnt snap brake or anything maybe getting dent or slightly bent.
@@jamaicanturtle6313 Except how TF do you improperly use a crank? It's not like they do much of anything other than pivot around the the bottom bracket. It's not like a rider would be trying to pull the ends out and away from the bike while flying through the woods. To be fair the forlks claiming weak cranks need to provide specific context - did they slam into a huge rock at high speed or smack a tree? Did they drop a heavy moving or a refrigerator on the crank assembly? Did they hit them with a sledge hammer repeatedly until they broke? Point is check proper reviews and not just go by random comments on YT
Also we would have to assume that Neko is not really using 5Dev parts during competition and only sitting in an interview because 5Dev is using him as a paid sponsor. I mena I guess they could make top notch parts specifically for Neko while selling subpar to the masses. But then there'd be a trail of part recalls + lawuits.
I have zero experience with these parts, but I would be very surprised if the quality wouldn't be top notch. It looks great and sounds like the engineers behind them are way overqualified.
Love this brand. They are awesome to deal with. We have been selling them in our shop since last year. Short cranks for short riders!
Yeah got a set of 155's on the way for my hobbit legs 🤣🤣
Need the Titanium Cranks! They will go so well on my Ti Hardtail.
Their Ti Stem is probably the best looking stem ever made.
They make me think of Thompson engineering for some reason, i was always i big fan ( and still am ) of Thompson, the machining looks awesome , i also had a syncros titanium seatpost back in the day on my super V with that machined look , loved that also 😊😊 i would hope they are the same quality as these older brands 😊
Love 5Dev. I bought a set of these cranks really early on. They give me nostalgia for the 90s/00s when there were a hundred small companies making cool stuff for bikes. Always fun to nerd out in the lot over cool shiny new gear. I don’t think the cranks make me ride like Nico, but I do love them. Excited for more stuff.
Love my 5DEV cranks and pedals! We need another company making suspension links ✌🏼❤🍻
One of the best videos lately.. please, more of this!
2:43, so casual, "so we bought a 5 axis machine".
cant wait for a 5dev cassete, probably something that adds to the 9-50t gear ranges
Some super cool parts
Thank you 5Dev and GMBN for this awesome documentary!
Thanks Aldo 🙌 Thanks to 5Dev for taking time out for us too!
Love them! Wish they had some more affordable options. GX and XT seem to be the industry standard and can be had under $150. I’ll pay a premium for US made aluminum cranks but $500 is a bit much.
Problem is, they have to cover the cost of the extremely expensive equipment they use to machine the parts.
That was cool. I glaze over at some of these tech presentations, but that one had my full attention from beginning to end. Thank you Anna and the whole team.
5DEV 155 cranks next mod on my YT Decoy yeww can't wait
Definitely a great part in the bike component world , plus what a great person's each one of them seem to be .
I love the fact that they are a San Diego based company since I grew up here. Everything they make is pure ART. Im excited to see what else they develop :)
As a CNC machinists on a 4 axis CNC lathe i just love it. And yes i have made bike parts there was out of stock/no longer available.
Awesome cranks, awesome pedals. The new Ti Cranks look insane.
Great products! Live in San Diego and have cranks on both bikes. Made in the USA and my hometown.
Fabricating on the go is a real blast for these guys. It may or may not trickle down to us, but it is great watching them follow their dreams.
P.S. I have a Best Friend/Engineer who does similar with amateur car racing.
We use 5thAxis Workholding and love that they are making bike parts. Wish we had the machines to do this work.
Thinking out of the box great quality products, with there capabilities can't wait to see what they manufacture next.!
Holy COW! They have 155 eCranks too.
Love these guys. We use their workholding and I run their parts.
i just got their cranks on my Pivot Vault gravel bike...love them. Going to get another set for the Road bike then my mtb bike
Get a Yeti with Transmission and toss on some Ti Cranks and a Stem. Put it on your OneUP rack on your Range Rover. HA!
I've been a fan of 5Dev since I first saw them on GMBN Tech a couple of years ago. Great to hear their story.
Where’s Doddy?
Very cool products. Thing is, most people claim they want Made In The USA quality, but they’re unwilling to pay what it costs.
Devinitely cool and innovative company.
I wish they would dip chainring and cassette teeth in tungsten carbide to increase longevity. Titanium has great thermal and strength to weight properties but is not equal to steel in durability for drivetrain applications.
Purple anodised Alloy! Back to the 90’s! Bula!!
Can’t wait to get some and see where they are going to
I just got a set of the 5dev freeride cranks. Excited to try them out.
Sounded like the US version of tune to me. But hearing that they have over 100 machines, it‘s maybe not exactly comparable.
Incredible stuff 👍👍
Oh wow they sure have a pretty Neuhaus Metworks bike hardtail behind them. Was that the Hummingbird or Solstice?
It’s a hummingbird
BEAUTIFUL ART
I have a few pieces from them, they are high quality and I love the look.
Is 5DEV the chat gpt4 of the bike industry!? so excited to see their innovations change how we understand mountain bikes 👀
💯5DEV=AWESOME💯
i would love to get my hands into this parts... but most of them are more expencive than my entire bike
We use 5th Axis products in our shop.
Can't wait to get the new Ti cranks!
Nice mountain bike ❤❤
Looking forward to running 5dev components on the next Global Mars Race.
Mountain bikes...drums...and some damn sexy components...
Might have to check the bank account and may have to see if any of my scoots are due an upgrade...🤔
Great stuff! Please let 5dev know we would love to see a 24mm spindle for Pivot bikes.
Curious to see their test equipment.
Great video! Let’s see more content like this.
Of course SWEET! But 💸💸💸💸💸! Also, can they make a lightweight, wireless internally geared hub...wait nevermind. I couldn't afford it!😞
Very cool! The parts look gorgeous! Great designs for weight saving!
I’m getting those ti cranks fo’sure! Wicked stuff!
Thanks Anna for a very interesting look at a precision Supplier to not only for the Mt Bike industry but any company looking for precision parts and the precise engineering to go with it!
LOL this brand is sure making some people mad.
Can we get Ti pedals and Ti bars?
This is amazing. We need more like these
Ti Cranks for Specialized SL Please! My Praxis broke on the 2nd day.
How can I get the TI cranks in Ireland?
Great back story! Just like any high-priced service or product, you're paying for quality and experience.
1300 for kranks is crazy bro kranks can only be so good
@@LSABERM you can get the trail version for 350
I still need them to make those cranks for my Kenevo SL
Love my enduro cranks, wish my bank account would allow for the ti cranks
Sick truck
Robin Goomes, the absolute legend up & coming Kiwi Freerider, who has big potential to become the first female to compete in Rampage when that chance becomes available, given she was backflipping at Darkfest with the boys, she rides 5Dev also. It's pretty sick to see that Niko Mulaly gets right in there at the manufacturing stage with his own project. I wonder who else rides them, from what ive seen i would say that 5Dev & Cascade Components, as on Crestline bikes, now ridden by Sam Blenkinsop, definitely have the most beautiful machining..
Pedals that weigh 345g's? Little pricey but that's light.
How can we get these in France?
We Canadian need a better supplier of cranks. The average store waits for multiple orders before they would even consider placing and order making the order process ridiculously long. I tried getting 5Dev and it was Im possible! I ended up contacting a friend in the UK to order and ship me a competitors crank. If possible maybe look at selling via and online distributor so international buyers can also enjoy your products. Cheers
certainly very nicely machined
When you see the titanium cranks in the flesh, they really are incredible 👌
CNC machining parts from billett like that is not really efficient from a production perspective. It makes the production cost high and the finished parts expensive.
Thank you. This is the comment I was looking for. It's too freaking expensive for what it offers. A crank is just a piece of rectangular cuboid. Why the heck do we need CNC machining for that. It doesn't need the same kind of tolerance as aerospace parts.
Taking a step back, even among CNC machined crank, 5Dev is much more expensive than Rotor
@@jamisonr Sure, if you want to pay for looks, you pay for looks. I'm going to pay for functionality. Just don't pretend that you pay for something other than vanity
Love them❤️
Love my 5Dev crankset on my squish bike - much nicer than the stock OEM stuff. Just wish I could get a set that would fit a 24 mm BB (i.e. SRAM GXP or Shimano). I have PF41 BB and *will not* use any pressed-in bearings (most stupid spec ... creak creak creak).
Why does Neko's bike have a chain on?
The Allen headed bolts at the base of the shock should have flat washers, thrust washers where necessary etc, ta,
Why don't you do rising rate rear ends?
Can we get a factory tour?
That’s crazyyy
5Dev needs to get into the motocross industry!!please
Modern day Cooks Bros ….just outstanding
Great story, well done.
is titanium really a good crankset material? its not very abrasion resistant, is it?
Used their crank.... love the look thot is heavier than my previous carbon version. But love the look...
So few people understand the level of design and work that goes into that crank. $1500.00 is a steal. That's a $50,000.00 part or more.
overqualification at it's finest
If you watch their videos they use the best machines. This isn't some small time machine shop. They have the best of the best CNC machines. A lot like German cnc shops vs your typical US one.
i love their products...i own a set of cranks, but I'd be hard pressed to say they did anything for riding, other than jewelry for the commoner. For the pro's maybe, but even then it's just grams. To me the innovations have been Frame geometry, 29'er and suspension and disc brakes. Chris King is the only ultra slick stuff that has stuck around and survived the test of time, Magic Motorcycle died on the vine. Hopefully 5 Dev creates something that is a game changer.
holy moly these guys are smart. well done.
These cranks are a joke, I see a lot of local 'mtb youtubers' market these things. The only thing they have going is different aesthetics, but hey whatever gets ya to pay 10x the price. If your that desperate for shorter cranks just wait a year for the main companies to come out with an appropriately priced shorter crank thats 140-155. Shimano currently has a 160mm set for like $50 bucks.
No way. nope. I'm broke. Dammit. Why WHY!!!
Yes they are expensive. But look at those cranks dammit
I like the non bike work 5dev does
where doddy at? we want doddy back
You need to do a burgtec company check. Start doing more UK based homegrown brands like hope etc!!
Good thinking! We have some things in the works already, but we'll pass this along to our video team!
@@gmbntech please do burgtec it would be mega to hear the story and product history! ❤️
I want! I want! I want!
I want the cranks so bad!! Thats my last upgrade to do on my bike!
This modern high tech bike looks a lot like my 2005 Kona Stinky. Makes me feel a bit better about my "outdated geometry".
