    Thank you for your kind words...I was nodding along when you said that packaged keto snacks can be the difference between going low carb and not for some folks. That's exactly the type of people we're trying to help and we're always working hard to try and get it right for our customers. It's a big reason why we give refunds when someone is genuinely unsatisfied...we want folks to enjoy their snacks!

    Hi Steve, in 2021 I was watching my 7 year older sister lose her mind and her life to diabetes. Her sugars were running in the 6 and 7 hundreds, her A1C was about 14 or 15. She could not get it down even with aggressive insulin shots. But she ate only what she wanted. Lunch for her was a coke and a pint of ice cream. If she was still hungry she'd have crackers or a candy bar. Then I was diagnosed with diabetes and told what I had to look forward to. That was my wake up call. I lost my sister in the fall of '21. I will be 70 this fall, but I won't die from the same cause. You've helped me immensely on my journey. Thank you, my friend.
    And I love choc zero. I appreciate how you present them.

    Steve, as a wee kid, my Dad was away at college. My Mother would tell me that "Daddy is away getting smarter for us! (the family). I would tell Colton that Daddy is away learning how to make himself smarter for Colton. For me is lasted for 6 years, so my Dad could get is masters degree in Education. He was an Industrial Arts teacher for over 30 years! My Mom said things in a way to make me *so proud* of my father, that it became easy to accept over the years. When he would come home all of us kids would jump at the chance to learn what he had learned that particular month away!!! Try to make it seem like Dad is a super-hero, because he IS a super-hero!!! I tell ya what. I was a taxi driver on the overnight shift in nine cities. I was also a big rig driver crossing the nation every week.
    I ate a LOT of fast food, junk from truck stops and lots of candy bars, passing time for the hundreds of miles between loads. As a cab driver I had little choices for food in the middle of the night, so I ate the easily obtainable junk. I have had four heart attacks and two strokes. All easily attributed to my diet.
    Then I found Keto. I have been recovering from my second stroke. I have lost 90 lbs with a sedentary life. Then I began to talk walks. I go that up to two miles at a time. I live directly a half mile from both Pacific Beach and Mission Bay.
    Thanks to you, and others, I have introduced friends to the Keto life. Thanks for your help. I am a disabled veteran with mobility issues, so being acle to walk so much, with a famous beach right down the street is cool.

    I am a type 2 diabetic. I have purchased several items from Choc Zero, including the peanut butter cups, truffles and Rhea bars. I have been enjoying these items sparingly for several months and have had ZERO glucose spikes from consuming them. Everybody is different, and what is true for me might not be true for you. But I will continue to purchase selected items from Choc Zero as long as they are available.
    Thanks, Steve, for introducing me to Choc Zero. I am not doing a keto diet, but I do use some keto products to help decrease my carb intake and still enjoy a few of the things I like, such as peanut butter cups.

    I agree that the comment about such a huge bump in glucose from choczero is out of line. I am unfortunately someone who gets a spike from it and so I avoid it. I buy instead goalz which does not contain the corn fiber and I do fine. Ingredients are cocoa mass, cocoa butter, allulose, and some nut or coconut based on the type. It is great. I really loved the choczero but my CGM says stay away. Choczero does try to reach out for suggestions on how and when to eat it, but I always spike like 30-40. I am trying to keep insulin low so I just can’t eat it. Everyone should always test on their own.

    I am an HSP as well. The being a sponge to other’s emotions has gotten worse as I’ve gotten older. I feel for Colton, and you as well as you see him having a hard time. I still remember when I was 7, in my 60’s now, that my Dad was living four hours away as he had switched occupations. My Mom was packing and us kids finished out the school year. My Mom even took me to a Dr because I wasn’t doing so well with the situation. The Dr advised that I be sent to where my Dad was, which was with my oldest sister and her husband, and that is what happened. I know that can’t happen in Colton’s situation but I’m sure having you, Terry, and Courtney will be of a help to him. 🙏🙏

    Choc Zero immediately spikes my glucose to over 300. I'm one of your mentioned 10ish%, and thankful for a CGM that so clearly shows what it does and the discussion. We're all different and need to know what affects us individually.

    • @SeriousKeto
      @SeriousKeto  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I wish I knew what the correlation was and why some people spike and others don't. But there seems to be no flags in terms of specific products, ingredients or diabetes type (or lack thereof). It would probably require some sort of meta-study looking at a very large group and multiple bio-markers.
      But since that's never going to happen, your advice in the last sentence is the best advice.

      @@SeriousKetoYes! Everyone, and I mean everyone, should wear a CGM for a month at least every 3 to 5 years just to see what’s going on. Every prediabetic should be given one for free for a month or two in order to map out the same for them on an individual basis. Sadly, many endocrinologists actually discourage their diabetic patients from even checking themselves with a simple glucose meter! They think it will make them neurotic. I think it will inform and empower them! Hmmm… Perhaps that possibility makes some of the endocrinologists neurotic?!

    Hi Steve, I'm a type one diabetic and yes, glucose can go to 400 and beyond as a type one and probably as a type two as well, but not sure about that. For me, Choc zero does spike my blood sugar a bit, but I also know that for me, many things spike mine that may not make other people's blood sugar rise. Bodies are different. For me, even if I eat too much protein, yes protein, my blood sugar rises to over 200 I never blame a company unless it's been proven that a particular company is being deceptive.

    I’m sensitive to glucose spikes and sometimes I won’t try something unless I can test it out for myself at home in case I do have a reaction. But I would never discourage anyone from using a product just because I I have a reaction. If I eat a dish of oatmeal, my blood sugar spikes to 300. I don’t want oatmeal banned. Most people don’t even have that kind of reaction. My body is just being weird and I wish it wasn’t that way. Hi Steve, just love your podcast and your vulnerability! Just so you know, your Carbonaut review has helped me so much. We live in Southern California and the cost for this bread is $9 a loaf at Sprouts Natural Foods market. Oh, my wall of shame meal: sometimes when I needed to run an errand I would go to Rite Aid where there was a Thrifty ice cream section. At 10:30 AM I would request a double ice cream scoop with a cake cone. This is before I had my coffee and breakfast! Since last November I have lost 13 lbs just by eating a low carb and curtailing my Sees candy habit. The reason is because I had a retinal tear in my right eye and a retinal detachment in my left eye. Plus, my mom died from complications of uncontrolled diabetes. Her eyes were very messed up. Although my A1C was 6.1, I am doing what I can to lower it. I really enjoy the time you take for your videos.

    In my 20s (about 40 years ago), I used to have a cup of coffee and a Little Debbie oatmeal cream pie (aka marshmallow surrounded by soft oatmeal cookies) every day for breakfast. It was my favorite thing, sugar and caffeine. About ten years ago, I tried one again just for old time's sake. It was the nastiest thing I ever put in my mouth.
    My other favorite treat was a yeast roll filled with custard and topped with chocolate ganache. I haven't eaten one in two years. I've thought about trying one, but I think the glucose spike would be no fun.
    I have to brag just a little because at 61, I just had my first A1c test. It was 5.2. Hooray for keto!

I'm certainly fine with them selling their products as keto friendly but do wish they would put a disclaimer on their products that in certain individuals consuming their products do have a rise in glucose. • @SeriousKeto
      @SeriousKeto  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Is this referencing a particular part of the podcast? I record these and almost instantly forget what I talked about.
      Incidentally, "priorities" is a word that was created by businesses who couldn't agree on what the "most important thing" is. Priority, by definition, is singular. There can only be ONE most important thing. Yet I spent countless years in board meetings where the C-suite had a hard time agreeing on NINE priorities for the next year's business goals.

      @@SeriousKeto Very funny! 😆
      Yes, that advice came back to me when you were kindly saying that people often don't have time to cook and 'products' become an option.
      I think that is an easy 'trap' to fall into.
      If food is your medicine, as good ol' Hippocrates advised, then I think preparing healthful food should be a priority. From that premise, I find that time to cook is available, although it sometimes takes a bit of planning ahead.

    I've always been a stickler for reading labels but Dreamfields pasta taught me that you can't always trust those nutritional labels.

      I feel like these products are fine as the occasional treat or "safety net" to keep a person away from falling into sugary snacks. But speaking as someone who routinely reviews these breads/tortillas/snacks, I believe they are what are keeping me from taking of the "Quarantine 15" I gained. They don't necessarily spike my glucose and they don't knock me out of ketosis, but they do keep me (and I think most people) from losing weight.

    Whatever way of eating people follow, it is always preferable to make your own food. However, the reality is we don't all have the time to do such. I'm a T2 Diabetic and there are times that ChocZero (and other Keto-friendly items) will spike my glucose. What people don't realize at times is that stress levels and other things can change the sensitivity for us T2s (can't speak to if this is the case with T1 - different disorder). Some times I'm more insulin resistant, some times I'm less (and my cgm is going off cause I've gone low). If you're worried about what affects you, track it and read the labels for food stuffs. Take information from the internet as a starting point for our own research. I've been so thankful that as part of your testing, you go through all the ingredients. That way, I can manage my expectations. And truly, there are some things that have gone on my - "Yep, not buying that" list. So, keep doing you and we'll keep watching....

    I hate to say how bad I was when I was younger when it came to food but I was definitely all-out addicted. I commuted to college and every day I would stop at McDonalds and get TWO full on breakfast meals, then I stopped at a bagel shop a little further down the highway and got three to four specialty bagels (pizza, cheese, etc.). When I got to the campus I would park in the parking structure and eat it all! It was insane. I used to have nightmares that I would get in an accident on my way home and they would just leave me in my car piled under fast food wrappers and soda containers because I was too fat to get out! I was over 400 pounds back then. I lost about 100 pounds during my last semester but have been up and down ever since. Keto/Ketovore have been super helpful over last few years. I never did get back up over 400 pounds but I got as high as 375 at one point a few years ago.
    Also, in terms of ChocZero, I enjoy a piece of chocolate now and then and think their products are really tasty. I'm pretty sure most packaged keto products are not the best for me personally but I completely get the need for them. I don't do a lot of cooking so tend to do simple things that don't require a ton of prep (basically I'm lazy). I appreciate your honesty on all the products you review, I always feel I can count on you for that honest opinion which is extremely helpful for me. Thank you.

By the time the pandemic showed, I was in burnout but my work hours were over the top so I was drinking 4 to 6 power drinks a day just to keep moving. Notables: Costco macadamia chocolate caramel clusters - I'd eat them by the dozen. Ice cream of any flavor - one of my faves was to buy the cheapo tub (2 gallon?) of vanilla and add about a cup of Jif and mix until smooth like a DQ blizzard. Little Debbies - in particular Swiss cake rolls and the peanut butter sandwiches - 3-4 at a time. Don't even get me started on Halloween candy! Ugh! Been Keto 6 months now and down 40 lbs. and feel great. Never thought I'd be able to 'give up' pasta, bread, rice and potatoes, but the cravings are gone. "Chicharron" is a word that is more accurately translated to "crackling" in English and does not mean pork or meat, though it is typically made from animal skins. But in Hispanic cultures chicharrones are made from Pork, chicken, and beef, and particularly in Mexico, Chicharrones de Harina (fried wheat crackling) are a very common snack. This isn't meant to be deceptive, it's just a pun on the word for crackling based on a Mexican treat. They sell them fried fresh at local flea markets in my area here in Florida. I know to look out for them because I've been exposed to them, but I can see how others might miss it on the package.

      I honestly think that even for those of us who use continuous glucose monitors and try to control other external variables, there can still be inconsistent results. For example, I dipped my finger into the ChocZero white chocolate syrup for a taste and my glucose went up 40 points. The next day, I put a full serving (2TB) into my coffee and there was zero movement in my glucose.

    Hey, Flash! (Steve) you are always so reasonable and thoughtful in your explanations on things. I appreciate that. I have a sciencey (is that a word?) question: I’m one of those people whose glucose rises significantly when I eat sweet things, even those with the fake sugars, like erythritol, monk fruit, stevia…except for allulose…but I’m realizing that when I use allulose, I only use a small amount so the food hardly tastes sweet at all. Anyway, I want to know what causes the glucose rise…what is the mechanism in my body? I asked my doc, but she didn’t know. My thought is that after tasting something sweet, my body expects some sweet food and starts pumping out insulin to balance the sweet. Then, since no glucose appears, my liver has to make some to balance that extra insulin. Do you have any ideas or suggestions of where to start researching? Thanks!

    Choc Zero does send my glucose higher than I would prefer. However, it is not every product, nor does it go up more than 40 points. As I test like you do - nothing else but the product, in what I consider a serving, with no “exercise” to blunt a rise - I determined that, if I want to enjoy a couple of peanut butter cups and don’t want to make them, choc zero is still better than the sugary ones that sent my glucose up by around 100 points. It’s not like this is a daily snack, nor one that I can’t control with a bit of exercise or by using it as a dessert for a high protein/high fat meal. With encouragement, I think that like other reputable companies, they will use R&D resources to improve their products so that more customers can enjoy them.

    • @SeriousKeto
      @SeriousKeto  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Which glucose monitor are you using? I've found that since I "upgraded" to the Dexcom G7, I'm getting some very strange readings - generally much higher (like 30 points or more) than what I get doing a finger stick on my Keto Mojo. I'll recalibrate it with the Mojo reading and it still goes right back up on the G7.
      In another example, I dipped my finger into the new ChocZero white chocolate syrup and had a taste. My glucose shot up just over 40 points. The next morning, I put a full two tablespoon serving into my coffee and my glucose moved less than 10 points. Back when I was using the G6, I ate six ChocZero peanut butter cups in one sitting and my glucose moved only 13 points.
      After doing some research, it seems that the G7 is especially sensitive to pressure. So if you place it on the back of your arm (the recommended location) and you sleep in such a way that it puts pressure on the sensor, it can cause abnormally high readings. This could also explain why I'm seeing some radical spikes and dips in my glucose at night that I never saw with the G6.

    Sushi 3-4 times/week. Remember that the rice is seasoned with sugar. Soy sauce has wheat. Yeah, I loved sushi so much (still do but I am wiser) that I moved to Japan. Thanks for the podcast Steve.

    For years (decades?) the first thing I consumed in the morning was a can of Coke (my replacement for coffee). Then, on my way to work 1-2 times a week I would get donuts; 2 cinnamon sugar cake, 2 glazed, and 2 chocolate glazed. They would be either gone by the time I got to work, or I would save 2 for a mid-morning snack, accompanied by another can of Coke. I'm now 62 years old, with a 20-year history of type 2 diabetes. Most of that time I took a non-insulin injectable (Trulicity). I am now off my diabetes meds 9 months, and down 80 lbs. Still have 120 lbs. to lose. But, my highest A1C was 10.9, and it is currently in the 6.3 range and improving. My blood pressure meds that I've taken for 40 years (3 different ones) the dosage has been cut in half and then half again. My highest fasting insulin was 77 and it's now nearly within normal at 19. Highest C-reactive protein was 55 (FIFTY FIVE) and it is now normal at 4.3. Liver enzymes have normalized, cholesterol is good. I follow a Ketovore/Carnivore/Keto way of eating variation way of eating. No processed food. No restaraunt food, no vegetable or seed oils. Animal based; grass-fed and grass finished beef, wild caught salmon, pastured and organic eggs, raw milk, cheese and other dairy, a few nuts and seeds, a low-carb vegetable like green beans on occasion, and berries and a small amount of very dark chocolate nearly every day.

    I’m in IT and a thing I have noticed is a lot of people in IT eat quite badly and very prone to snacking in general. I mean it’s generally a very stress prone job at times so I guess people in the field go to eating and even heavy drinking as a coping mechanism.

    I absolutely love chocolate Choc Zero. A lot of the time, that's the difference between me falling off the wagon and not. I love the company, they're super transparent about packaging weight. They have great customer service even when it's the mailman's fault.
    A spike of over 400 from one serving of the syrup tells me that there is something going on with that person. That's definitely not a reaction the rest of us get. I noticed I do get a higher spike (than I would like) with anything that has peanut butter in it. So guess what, I just don't eat the ones with peanut butter in it. I'm going to be super unhappy if that movement affects my Choc Zero. That makes me want to go place an order right now.

      It's folks like you that make me happy that we do what we do. I think having treats that are yummy AND made without added sugar can help folks succeed in their goals and that's what we want to do for the keto community.

    Hope things go as smoothly as possible juggling your schedule, and that everyone in your family does well. In defense of Wisconsin's decision, some folks with brain damage from inhalants can cost easily in medical costs per year and residential care $150k/year for the rest of their life. So they may have been staring at their budget going what the heck can we do. In OR we had so much severe brain damage from meth that cost a fortune and fried people's brains that we stopped access to Pseudofed which is a base for making meth. decision, some folks with brain damage from inhalants can cost easily in medical costs per year and residential care $150k/year.

    I love choc zero. I have hypoglycemia. It has never spiked my blood sugar. And it’s not anything that you eat every single day of your life, but it’s good to have a treat now and then and I find that I especially, like to have a piece of chocolate after dinner. And it doesn’t bother me at all. I hate when it has something like that shake that you showed and it says 15 carbs per serving and there’s four servings in it the same with the diet ice cream you have to watch it. There’s ice cream out there that says keto and low-carb but a pint has four servings! I don’t think so! 😅
    And I don’t know if I got on here and gave you my condolences on your precious baby. We know your pain. Our prayers are with you and your family as you go through the grieving process. ❤
