    Yea Costco has had some really questionable products labelled "KETO" in big letters on the label, but are clearly not created by people who are actually doing the keto diet. Before Keto I never read labels. Now I read every one. I don't need a snack item that has more carbs per serving than I want in an entire meal.

      TBH, it's why I've stayed with the habit I developed during the height of the pandemic of grocery shopping online. I can spend hours online checking ingredients and make sure to mark items as "do not substitute". Not for nuthin', WalMart will refund any delivery item where you don't like a substitute. You don't have to take it back; they'll just refund it.

      Oh just look at like the “0 calorie” oil sprays that are used to grease your pan for cooking. A serving size is 1/4 SECOND of a spray!!! I spray the pan for at least 3 seconds to actually get a thin coating! And it says in all print, for every like 1/2 second spray it’s 5 calories! Yea it’s still not much but it adds up and just shows how deceitful these companies are and how lax the FDA is on allowing manufactures to label things “0 calorie” or “sugar free” as long as it is under a certain amount PER SERVING, and the serving size is determined by the manufacturer so it is usually a ridiculously small amount just so they can label their product whatever “free”. Smh.

  • @punkyfeathers1639
    @punkyfeathers1639 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    What people don’t realize is that the way the nutrition labels are written are not just inconvenient, they are dangerous.
    About 8 years ago we almost lost our son to type 1 diabetes. He had always been thin and I remember thinking how lucky we were were that didn’t seem to have gotten the “fat gene” that my husband and I had gotten.
    For those who don’t know Type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are practically unrelated. Type 2 is where your body for various reasons has a resistance to insulin.
    Type 1 is when the persons body sees the insulin creating cells in the pancreas as a threat and kills them off. It’s a big subject and not really relevant here.
    My addition to this conversation is that we as a family had to attend three days of training on how to read food labels before we were allowed to take our son home from the hospital.
    This thing that surprised me the most in the beginning was learning that all the sugar free foods on the market were not appropriate to give our son.
    In the case for type 1 individuals is that you cannot tell how the body will react to sugar alcohols and that giving them sugar is much safer.
    The amount of insulin medication you give someone with type 1 is by insulin to carb ratio. In my sons case he gets one unit of insulin for every 15 grams of carbs. We know how his body will handle sugar, but it’s a crap shoot with alternative sugars, EVEN natural ones like stevia etc.
    There has been a huge push from Type 1 foundations and epilepsy foundation to change the way food labels are written. People end up in the hospital fighting for their lives in DKA (diabetic keto acidosis) because of errors in reading food labels. Not recognizing all the names for sugars and sugar alcohols.
    I’ve decided to do keto for myself because I have a rare fat disorder and I also have uncontrolled narcolepsy. My husband and our son are joining me for weight loss.
    So we are in a position where our son with type 1 diabetes food has to be made differently than ours. Which is fine and we are totally willing to do. It just goes to show how messed up the food labels really are.

    • @jslezak57
      @jslezak57 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bravo to you! It's unfortunate that sometimes we almost have to lose someone or something so important to us before we get a wake-up call. You were fortunate enough to learn how we have been mislead in this country for decades by the food manufacturers. Since the food pyramid was introduced thanks to the charlatan Ansel Keyes, obesity and type II diabetes have become a national epidemic....should we continue on this path, we will stress our healthcare system to the max and it will not only cost trillions of dollars to treat type II, but the cost in lives is tragic. I personally watched one relative literally kill himself slowly because he would cheat with tons of sugar and processed carbs thinking that he could "cancel" it out with upping his insulin dosage.
      Keep up the great work, especially with your son... Type I diabetes is a life-long battle, but it can be won.

    One of the first things I learned from the old WW, was looking at serving sizes. Of course from their perspective it was for the calorie count. Can't remember how many times I looked at something and thought "wow, that's great - oh, it's 2.5 servings in this container"... Also reminds me of the joke "Hey, look at the side of a pint of ice cream - says it serves 4!! Hah!" So, when I started counting carbs, I take the same tack - take all the numbers and multiply by the number of servings and add a couple to count for rounding. Then divide by how many servings I think this will be. Those are my numbers... Thanks for keeping it real!

    Hey Steve! Great great great video! Ingredients and nutrition labels, and Keto labeling frustrate me more than almost anything. It amazes me that people give more thought and care about the gas and oil they put in their car than the food they feed themselves and their loved ones. It’s beyond SAD (pun intended). • @jslezak57

    You are SO right! I've seen so many different videos that show the difference between American and European food nutrition labels. That's why I've moved so far away from using processed products and buying whole food and making everything from scratch. Yes, it takes a lot of effort and more time-consuming, but I found that I appreciate the end product so much more and tend to eat less because it's not instant gratification like with so many pre-packaged foods.
    I also find issue with some content creators as well. For example, there was one baked recipe that promised a low carb count. However, the end product had such an unreasonably small portion size that no human would actually stick with.
    There was also a recent documentary on the BBC about how the amount of highly-processed products the Brits are using now compared to 1960 (not necessarily low-carb). They found that, especially among teenagers in the UK, the percentage of convenience foods in the daily diet went as high as 70%!
    I do, however, see a general trend going back to more foods in their natural state.... it's so hard though, because the marketing techniques of the major food corporations make it hard to resist. I have to laugh when I see that some companies are still using the "low fat" craze in marketing their products - a giant bag of Twizzlers is still labeled a "low fat food"! Never mind the three trillion grams of sugar in the product!
    Finally, I have found that I need to stay away from all of the "sweet" goodies in the low-carb world. Even though they are created with sugar substitutes, they still tend to be a trigger for me to eat more (and I only speak for myself). I think that even though I have moved completely away from sugar, that there is still that subconscious sweet tooth that was ingrained into me from childhood. Let's face it: products are way too easy to grab in the grocery store. At the beginning of the 1800s, the average American consumed less than 4 pounds of sugar in a YEAR. Today, the average American consumes FIFTY TIMES that amount or about 100 pounds.
    The bottom line is that the more refined and processed a food is, the more I think that we are playing Russian Roulette with a fully-loaded gun (IMHO).
    Thank you for being honest with your recipes....you are one of the few content creators that I use and trust with the nutritional information.

    I learned about this a while back, but this was incredibly helpful. My belief is that the closer you are to nature, the better you are. We need to develop a better relationship with food, period. You should always do your best to stray away from the "keto" labeled junk to the best of your ability.
    The small exception is if you're first starting and you still crave sugar and carbs, these would make a great substitute. But with time, you should lessen your dependency of junk food.
    Anyhow, thanks again for the video. Good luck to the rest of you on this journey.

    This was a really helpful reminder of all the pitfalls that can show up when reading food labels.
    I will add that even when I find a product that is acceptable after reviewing the label, sometimes food companies can pull a fast one and change the ingredients. Even when buying the foods I’ve vetted in the past, I still need to check them for changes. It’s a sad fact.

    Heck most of the products I buy aren’t even keto marketed!

  • @davepost7675
    @davepost7675 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    You directed a message towards non-keto, something like, "It's only 5g..." Yes. I have to deal with this all the time. So many people say this when trying to get me to eat something and worst of all, they really don't know exactly how many grams of carbs they are talking about. When they say, "It's only a few grams" they actually have no idea. I even see restaurants advertising "Keto meals" but cannot tell me the macros and without knowing the macros, I cannot decide if it fits into my dietary budget.
    I'm trying to think of a nice analogy that I can use to really hit home the concept of budgeting carbs that they can relate to. Something like, "if you had $20 to spend on all your food and drink for the day, would you spend $5 for your morning cup of coffee leaving you with $15 for everything else?" Using 25% of your carb budget on just one item, usually a minor item might not work, though it does depend on the meal plans for the entire day and it might fit in just fine.

    • @SeriousKeto
      @SeriousKeto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    • @jslezak57
      @jslezak57 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed! I was in the grocery store recently and picked up a "carb-friendly" frozen cauliflower pizza crust. It was a relatively small crust, so I can't imagine anyone eating less than 1/2 of it for a meal. First of all, the ingredients included modified corn starches, various flours, and the net carbs for the entire pizza were close to 100g! For most people, even 1/2 of the crust would trash 2 days worth of carbs. I even keep restaurant visits to only special occasions because when someone else prepares my food, I have no idea what ingredients are going into it.

He ordered a chocolate covered almond for our store, because it said Keto on it (we have some non conventional food items in our store) and when it arrived, I looked at the ingredients, the second item was Palm Sugar, third was Soybean oil. He now looks at every label, diligently, and if he can't read the label because it's a light background with a light font color, he won't even bother trying and puts it back. Probably one of the top 5 videos made by anyone that I've seen with regard to Keto foods. This is a must view for anyone starting out. I've been mostly strict Keto (always strict on ingredients but sometimes lazy about tracking) and don't tend to comment much about quality of ingredients because I have my standards for me, not for others (and do not consider myself part of the KP squad). I sometimes do chime in if someone is struggling and asking for help and isn't getting (IMHO) the best advice from others. That typically involves suggesting that they watch videos from specific YT content creators (Drs Boz, Berry, Berg, & Kristie Sullivan, Thomas D, Allie McW, etc). This video just found its way to the top of that list. (I've always suggested your site for recipes. 😊). Thanks Steve! Great job!!

    I think you're very well-spoken and coherent. I agree 100% on the stalling, I have found certain foods stall me whether its inflammation, glucose/insulin spikes, or allergic reactions. I don't get hives or any major reactions when I eat nuts or dairy, but I have felt a change in energy, recovery, or sleep if I limit them in my diet. I had a very similar reaction to you, when you talked about foods that trigger your tendonitis. Like MSG for you, i keep an eye on gluten. I am not 100% sure it's doing anything negative currently, but I may try to remove it later in the future. I count total carbs, because I occasionally do like to indulge in frankenfoods like keto breads. A big one for me is I usually only eat primal kitchen condiments, because of how clean the ingredients are. Anyways, I thought this video sums up a lot of nuances people who do keto do not see. Counting macros is only part of doing keto right.

I'll continue to look for an app that gives acute carb measurements. I've been just googling the nutrition data for that but I think an app would simplify it for me.

    Great video. We are lucky in the UK, as every food has a serving amount nutritional information but then a 100g/100ml info so you can easily compare products.
    We do however have far less stuff in terms of sweeteners and keto pre made food/snacks, which i guess can be a blessing and a curse.,
    although the tides are turning slightly over here, as many more companies are offering a zero sugar or reduced sugar alternatives.

    Yep, in the end its easier to just avoid anything with an ingredient list of more than 1! Im trying to just eat whole foods that are not processed in any way. Makes shopping much easier.
    We stick to meat & veg, a little dairy and thats about it. But dont give a flying fig how anyone else wants to eat, keto or not. Its all a matter of choice. Its taken me more than 50+ years to learn this for myself.

    The term keto doesn’t have specific rules so buyer beware. Probably big reason people say keto didn’t work, they try to do the fast food, boxed food way of eating as they did on the SAD diet. Thank you for helping educate those who just do not know better.

    Another excellent and interesting video. Can always count on you, Steve. Thanks so much.
    I don't use much sugar-free gum but when I do, it can be a bit of a slippery slope. I wonder if my stalls are related to that so I just try to avoid it altogether. (I found an unopened pack of Trident when I was putting my shopping cart into the carousel in the parking lot so I had to snag it. Fell out of someone's bag.)
    I avoid MSG like the plague. Great to know about the soybean oil because stiffness in my hands and back pain are sometimes really bad (and knees). I will ferret that out of my diet.
    You're the best, Steve. Keep rocking.

    FYI, Regarding MSG, per Bobby @FlavCity, yeast extract can act the same as MSG. A note on how food labels measure carbohydrates. If I understand correctly, when food is measured, they actually measure out the fat and protein, and what's left gets counted as the carbohydrate. That's why yogurt appears higher in carbs, but the label doesn't take into account that the bacteria ate some of the carbohydrates. Terrific content, great minds think alike~
