  • Testing out what the difference is in a 4.0" barrel vs a 2.0" barrel in .357 Magnum for velocity, accuracy, and terminal ballistics. My test medium is 4 layers of denim followed by 1.75" of bologna followed by 3/8" particle board and into water jugs.

    I realize this video is 3 years old, but after watching it about 3 weeks ago I ordered two 20-round boxes of the HTP 125 gr SJHP’s for my .357 Mag, a S&W Mod 66 Combat Magnum with 2.5” barrel and Pachmayr grips I bought new in the early 80’s for my father for Christmas. It came back to me when he passed away back in 2000, and I haven’t used it much since. But seeing this video reminded me of how absotively wicked of a man stopper the 125gr HP rounds are out of a .357, so I have retired my .45 ACP w/230 gr hardball that I’ve kept for home defense for 40 years and brought the .357 back into the game for this critical role. I have lots of guns that will stop bad people, but nothing compares to the lethality that a 125gr .357 Magnum brings to the fight. Thanks for yet another excellent video Sam, keep up the good work! 👍

      A full loaded 357 at 1600 fps, let’s just say in 125g it does explode unlike any 9mm or 45 I’ve ever seen ,

    To my understanding, the purpose of the lighter/hotter 125 gr magnum is to NOT over-penetrate on a man sized bad guy and was designed with a 4 inch in mind. Therefore, while it doesn’t penetrate as much and explodes things with the shock and high velocity, all that energy is released into the intended target and not traveling on through releasing much of it’s energy into the wall beyond (or worse). That’s why this round is still considered a top notch if not THE top notch man-stopper

    you know sam when it come to the .357 magnum cartridge whether in a 2" 4" or 6" the high velocity of these cartridges are enough to make thoses barrel lengths result in good terminal performance on soft targets for close or long range, the 357 just has the power behind it to complete the task, granted the recoil will be determined by the weight of the bullet and the charge loaded in the cartridge, weight of the revolver and such but for a defensive stand point as one old school law enforcement officer said when working in the 80's it only took one or two shots from a 357 magnum revolver vs 15 shots to stop a hostile situation from a 9mm service side arm. excellent .357 magnum demo to the point and i must say the 357 didnt give any mercy to the bologna pack.

      Thank you. I always hear the old cops say this, and we have all these charts showing this round as well as the Federal 357B being extremely potent with a 96% one shot stop in a 4" barrel. People say these charts are not real, but then where did they come from and why does my common sense tend to believe the charts?

      @@GunSam Because Lucky Gunner Ammo says that caliber wars are stupid and ballistics gel works! OK, I half agree with him. Caliber wars are stupid. But AFAIC, ballistics gel only provides you with a constant medium over time. Science is about controlling all the variables you can. Also the expensive ammo all seems to perform very specifically to FBI specifications. IMO, they are gaming the system. If I am going to be rounds limited by a small gun or even the far easier to shoot K frame, I want a round that is as powerful as I can handle in terms of terminal performance. Remington G&W and HTP seems to fill the bill and be cheap enough to practice with, which will make me more effective with it. So I'm inclined to run with it.

      Thanks! I personally feel like the .357 Magnum is fine in a 4" barrel with a 125 gr as it recoils about the same as a .38 Special in an alloy J-frame. But even at 24 OZ I feel like the Magnum is a bit much for the 2" barrel, however if you can land shots you're probably 20-25% better off than the 9mm guy that can land accurate shots.

      @@GunSam My 649 is about 22oz depending on which grips are installed. I have to be honest and say that high traction rubber grips are absolutely the wrong grips for a J-Frame sized revolver with this ammo. I still have a mark from when I tested it at the range through the 649. The Monarch 158gr 357 Magnum is noticeably softer shooting. I can only assume the Monarch is no where near its listed velocity. The Monarch also seemed to be a tad more accurate, but probably not enough to matter. The Monarch had other issues which will prevent me from buying any more of it.

So I ordered some bigger Hogue grips off of Amazon & I replaced them. I have not shot .357 ammo through it yet but I feel a lot more comfortable now with bigger better grips in shooting the .357 ammo. I’m going to try the .38+p ammo as well.

    Excellent video and thank you for doing this. I love seeing "duty" sized vs. "ccw" sized comparisons insofar as external and terminal ballistics. I feel much better with my 2 1/2" S&W M66 (not that I ever didn't feel good with it, but now I feel even better). ;)
    I remember gun rags back in the '80s and '90s made it sound like if you shot a .357 from a snubby you might as well just shoot .38 special because you lost all of your power. For that matter, I remember reading in older mags that if you used a 4" .357 in lieu of a 6" then you were just handicapping the round. I guess, maybe, like any media, they have to start controversy to sell ad space? So-and-so would cut barrels showing you lost so much velocity for ever inch shorter barrel. They even had me believing it for a time (until I tested a few ... nothing as fancy as your tests, but water jugs and pine boards were involved). Heck, this makes me feel even better about my 3" .44 magnum (which pundits say is basically giving me .44 spl power with brutal recoil). Even metal targets I've hit (same ones I shoot with a 4 3/4" .44 mag) have suggested short barrels really don't rob all that much power. So, again, thanks for this test. As always, great information and fun to watch!

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you. A lot of the talk on barrel length is all over the place and the data don't always line up. One thing that is for certain though, is typically heavier bullets lose less of their maximum potential as obviously there's less powder to lose. So something like 110 gr .357's that actually are loaded hot will lose a lot of energy dropping barrel length, but 158 gr loses a lot less.

    • @mmabagain
      @mmabagain 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They said a short barreled 44 magnum was just a 44 special with brutal recoil? Seems to me that if the power was the same then the recoil would be the same. Therefore, if the magnum out of a short barrel has brutal recoil, then it also has more power.

    • @CeltKnight
      @CeltKnight 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mmabagain It does lose some power from a shorter barrel but not nearly as much (apparently) as some would have us believe. I can remember gun gurus bemoaning anyone carrying less than a 6" barrel because, even with magnums, they said you just wouldn't much from a 4" tube. Yeah, that was a real thing, and so, so wrong. From what I've cobbled together, it seems like a 3" .44 mag doesn't lose a whole lot to a 4". This seems to hold true for .357 and such as well.

      They were when your pectoral muscle just exploded or a arm or leg. Buddy dropped an armed robber snap shot blew his pelvis apart and will never walk again or breed! He did not want anything to do with guns after that moment. G&W box 125 SJHP Remington. Oh and numerous state cops and several county guys have told me since switching back to 9mm they have had several shot in then head only to have the bullet slide around the skills and they still shoot back. Never had that with 40, 357 Sig or Mag. And the report that they FBI used to declare 9mm just as effective also states the 9mm has never ever been as effective as the 40,45, or 357sig or Mag. EVER. Guy I shoot with retire letter agent senior Firearms instructor called a buddy in the FBI and they said 1 could not give women inferior gun (politically not feasible) and qualifications doubled up front. Not a better more effective gun, but one that was easier to shoot with less training. And they found women physiologically differentl from men in a way that made it hard if not impossible for a lot of women to even be able to shoot and qualify with the 40 and 45. So they needed and excuse to go back to the ineffective round.

I think realistically a 125 gr loaded in a .38 Special case with the right powder hitting the 25,000 PSI( I don't know the conversion for CUP) would push it in a 2" barrel at 1,050 FPS, maybe 1,100. I opened up YT and this old video was at the top of my recommended list. I had forgotten about it. This is my baseline for 357 Magnum. One cylinder's worth in my M&P340 causes injury. Not much, but some. It's the load I compare all other 357 to like BB 19H which is ever so slightly less hot. And over to the right, I see the Corbon 110gr JHP. I'll watch that video next.
    I still don't know if hydrostatic shock is a real thing in pistols or not. I've heard it said both ways. It really comes down to the elasticity of the tissue in question. Bologna is not very elastic. Neither are milk jugs.

    I’m praying for Kimber to make a K6 revolver with a 4” barrel. As much as I like my 4” GP-100, it’s more suited for the having fun at the range than for carry. A 4” Kimber K6 loaded with a good 125 grain defensive round (that gets 1400+ fps without too much recoil) would be perfect.

      A 3" barrel is a good compromise. Longer sight radius, more weight out front to help with recoil, and not all that much velocity loss. And not really any harder to conceal. The K6 is very nice with a good trigger. I have been wanting a 3" one myself. About the same weight as my 2.25" SP-101, a better trigger, and a full 6 rounds. I try to explain that to people a lot but they don't get it, I hear "158, 158, 158 GR!!!!! for .357 Magnum", but in reality 110 gr which are loaded light, 125 gr and other short barrel or known light loads are the way to go. If I went from my experience there's only 3 Magnum rounds i'd ever recommend for a snubby and those are American Gunner 125 gr, Golden Saber 125 gr and Gold Dot short barrel .357 as these are manageable. I have not tested the lighter 110 gr loads that Winchester and others make, but I bet those would be good loads. The 110 gr Winchester look like they are loaded low enough to avoid flame cutting.

    His velocity for the Remington 125 is near identical to my 38 Super handload with 124 XTP. I gotta try this test to compare. I think the XTP is a harder bullet than most, being rated for for velocities to 1500. 9x23 should also do about the same as this 357. The 2" was very impressive. I consider the 158 gr a hunting weight bullet though for hunting anything larger than WT deer a hard cast SWC is the better choice. 357 mag has been the champ for 1 shot stops on people for a very long time. I am not a strong believer in "shock" unless its very close to the CNS or its transmitted by bone or a large blood vessel. Once in awhile I have to supplement my water jugs by putting out the .82 cents for a filled jug, but that's rare. Believe it or not the bologna saves me money and supplies. Before the bologna/wood each bullet would penetrate through 3-5 jugs, now it's rarely more than 2. Not to say a 125 gr wouldn't do the job, but there's not a lot of bullet there, so if it flattens like a pancake on the rib cage, there might be some trouble for you. Something like a 180 gr won't totally flatten, and there's a lot of bullet to keep pushing forward after a bone hit.

      It wasn't a matter of anything anyone could practice. Normal revolvers have a small gap between the rear of the trigger and the trigger guard, so if your skin gets in there a little bit, no problem. With the 605 the rear of the trigger touches the trigger guard on a full pull, so the skin on my finger would literally prevent the trigger from being pulled, so to fire it you have to completely modify the trigger squeeze and grip to actually fire it. Now days it's fine, I have learned to basically pull the trigger on my second joint, it's just weird though because I have never had another revolver do that the way the Taurus does.

The 125 SJHP from Remington is an old round from the 70's and they let it go in an explode which may suck for hunting but does a number on stopping or convincing someone to stop. 1/2" wound track my back side. Those are devastating. Think about the area of that baloney somewhere in the body and that area getting damaged like that. And the sub-surface tissue too... Ouch. Plus the core does meet FBI spec for penetration so OUCH! My favorite round short of full house 110/296 loads with those bullets.. someone did a gel shot ant the petals peeled off in a starburst pattern about 4" in diameter...this is not a hunting bullets where you are trying to save meat and have a non closable would channel for good blood trail... • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like it so far. It's very much like a S&W. The trigger is a little grittier than the 686 and heavier than it, but similar in trigger pull weight to my 342 .38 snubby but again just a little grittier. With time this should smooth out.

      Mine the trigger is fine. Not S&W fine but close and stages well. The problem I had is could not eject rounds like those. Bad cylinder I am afraid. It is currently at Taurus awaiting resolution. From all the reviews and responses mine seams like an aberration not the rule. My M60 S&W is a cleaner but slightly heavier trigger pull. No trouble shooting either.

    Thats better for a 125 grain in A 357. 38 sp was a bit anemic in the last vid
    Still like a 158 grain jhp. With appropriate ammo. At least 1200.fps +.

    Imagine a human skull is the jug with the bones blown apart into several big pieces, but loose and movable inside the skin bag of your scalp. With blood, bone fragments, and pinkish grey mush (brain tissue) coming out of the exit wound. I've seen that several times with plain old 38 Special. Police, the US Government, and many military units used 38 for a really long damn time. It wasn't because they were stupid.

      The thing that's not great is that the grip has a roll pin, so at this point I have not figured out how to remove it.

    People who dismiss FPE/hydrostatic shock have never handgun hunted for pigs or black bear. Ive shot both with .357 Mag, .45 ACP, and .44 Mag. You'll NEVER see anyone thats got a single ounce of common sense hunting either of these critters with a 9mm anything. And if the 357 and 45 are fully capable of taking these animals cleanly, yet the 9mm isnt, HOW can anyone argue that theres no difference in performance between the 9mm and 45 on a human target?? They like to quote that FBI report, but IMHO, that particular entity has list all credibility a long time ago, in all respects. If one cartridge can take a 250-350 lb boar or bear but another cant, how can you argue the one that can isnt superior?? Im not saying that a 9mm isnt ENOUGH gun for self defense. 9mm ammo has came a long way in the last 30 years. BUT theres no way it does the same or similar damage as the 45, and if that were true, WHICH IT ISNT, then why do so many people still carry it?? Are they all stupid, every one of them? I doubt it.
    Personal opinion, I think the FBI put that info out there as false information to keep its own agents from facing more lethal threats. After all, NATO 9mm ball ammo is +p rated so it wont cause FTF/FTE problems in military 9mm sub machine guns. If thats the case, it being a +p round, why so many complaints from troops in Iraq and Afghanistan about the lack of stopping power in their ammo? Yes, its ball ammo. But Im a Veteran of both the USMC and the US Army, and Ive never in my entire life heard an older Vet (WW2,Korea, or Vietnam talk about the .45 ACP ball not doing its job. Great video, and this is just one Grunt speaking from the masses.
