  • Doing an informal bare gel test between the Remington UMC 125 gr SJHP, the Hornady Critical Defense 125 gr FTX and the Speer Gold Dot 125 gr JHP, and comparing them to the Winchester SXT (Black Talon) 180 gr JHP. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co... Also a new part of info always shared, is that if you're wondering why I lean back when I shoot, I am not. www.youtube.co....

      You might be able to achieve comparable performance from a 20ga or so loaded with 000 buckshot, with full length shotgun barrel. Trouble with that is we are comparing a full length shotgun (or defense length shotgun) with a snubby revolver that can be carried in your pocket. It's just not in the same camp of use. .357mag also doubles its power in a 20" carbine. So if we much compare a defensive shotgun vs. a snubby to achieve similar performance, then we're taking the best of what the shotgun world has to offer compared to the most diminished version of what the revolver world has to offer. I am sure the doctors like the NON fragmenting boolitz lots better, just a clean hole to patch. Jerry

    Interesting comparison. Thanks! The 125 JHP has had a great rep for years. When my ex-cop wife had to use her .357 in the mid 90’s it was a 125 JHP that did the job. But the newest ones are clearly improved. A comparison that might be interesting to folks in New Jersey and any other crazy places that ban hollow points, could be the 125 JSP compared to the JHP. I know we have other alternatives to hollow points these days, but it would be interesting to know if a 4” magnum has enough velocity to reliably expand a 125 JSP like it does JHP.

    The federal scalloped semi jacketed hollow point is king. At the speeds it goes the unjacketed portion acts as a fragmenting hollowpoint, while keeping the remaining portion of the bullet past the fragmentation onward. Fragmenting ammo usually has a base which continues onwards as well but usually it is a smaller weight portion than what the sjhp from federal has at the end of travel.

    For a .357 I don't feel the 125 grain bullet is the best no matter what barrel length you have. I've reloaded and hunted with .357 for a lot of years and have a lot of experience. I will not tell someone what is best for them but can say what has been best for me. I use both rifle and pistol in .357. For the rifle I like 140 grain bullets because I get a good combination of velocity and mass. For the handguns I prefer 158 grain bullets because they have lower velocity but more mass for better penetration. This works well for me.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First off I would chronograph some ammo to see if your barrel does indeed shoot faster than a 4". If you don't have a chrono and the assumption is you might get 100 FPS more than a 4", I would say it's hard to beat a 158 gr SJHP. The extra speed of a 6" might fragment 125 gr rounds, and the extra muzzle weight on a 6" tames the recoil. I say 158 gr SJHP for both, unless it's bear, if you are in bear defense you probably want 180 gr hot stuff like Buffalo Bore.

    If you didn't hit with the Black Talons, that's not the bullet's fault.
    I remember back in the day when they were testing guns shooting various rounds out of them, the Black Talons were always the most accurate.
    Which is surprising, since they were designed with terminal performance, not accuracy in mind.
    I really wish they would make them again.

    I've never gotten what I deem to be good accuracy at 50 yards, the distance I sight in all my revolvers BTW, with 125 grainers. So I always carry nothing but 158s. I carry 158 38 Special LSWCHPs for "urban"
    use, and 158gr SJHPs for out in the sticks. Got a sizable stash of the old Federal Nyclads for SHTF God forbid. Also got some full power 158 gr. FMJ loads I keep in reserve in case I need to shoot through a '48 Pontiac!
    I've never gotten caught up in the whole boutique $2.00+ per round craze that everybody seems to be obsessed with in this day and age.
    In all the analysis done over the last century concerning "stopping power" and such, all the focus has always been on bullet performance, which is inconsistent from lot to lot of identical loads or from what the temperature is, or how heavily clothed the perp is. No emphasis is really ever considered with the most important factor that determines success or failure..........Shot Placement.
    Like the old adage: A hit with a .22 always beats a miss with a .44! Best example is the old standard 38 Special 158gr RN @ 800 or so FPS, dubbed the "widowmaker" by so many police agencies because of its inability to stop criminals. Baloney!!!
    I don't know about you all, but I'd most likely stop whatever I'm doing at the time pretty darn quick if I were the recipient of a 158gr RN in the old pump or airbags.
