    Another good reason to test the snub nose barrel in addition to the 4" barrel, is that at 75 yards this ammo from the 4" barrel is almost exactly as powerful as the 2" barrel at the muzzle. So, if you wonder what this round would have done in the gel from the 4" barrel at 75 yards, just look to the 2" barrel gel test. Simple as that.

      @@mattwilcox3645 my EDC was made in 1895 and it is more powerful than a short barrel .357! Really with no exaggeration! Although it is bigger than the snub nose stuff but dang it who cares??I used to carry the full sized Gasser which is as big as the two in the video plus my current EDC combined (9.5" barrel, almost 8lbs) just for fun and had no problem doing so! And it was concealed enough to be physically impossible to tell if I had it on me or not!
      If something the gun I am carrying is a french Mle-1892 and although originally it was loaded with a pretty anemic ammo but the gun itself is really well built and that allows me to just put 8 or even more grains of Unique in each round and so to get the 120 grain FMJ bullet fired at over 1400 fps!I really can't understand why people are so much fixed on super compact shit that either won't kill a mouse with one round or will break your wrist because you got the full powered .357 magnum fired out of a gun that weights less than a pound+even if you don't-you still won't hit a house from 50 yards with it!

    • @mitubogoogle
      @mitubogoogle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At 75 yards it would be an improbable self defense distance for a one shot man stopping power, right?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mitubogoogle Very difficult to quantify those numbers as there's nothing listed on any charts with this round in a snub. The closest thing you have is looking at 9mm 124 gr at close to the same velocity as this in the snub, and that's 83% once shot stop. Now this bullet is semi jacketed and that 9mm is not, so it's not black and white but i'd say at 75 yards you're still over 8 in 10 odds to stop someone with one well placed shot.

After being stabbed by a repeat child rapist she was arresting (vest in cuiser trunk because S.Texas summer), a struggle ensued, whereby a 125gr SJHP permanently rehabilitated the perp. @@anthonysmith3132 I think you would have to first prove that 9mm service pistols aren't effectively doing the job. If a Glock 17, for example, has a proven street record of sufficiently stopping bad guys then no department is going to take on the liability of allowing an officer to carry a 6 or 7 shot revolver as their primary weapon regardless of caliber. The other argument is that the 357 magnum is overkill for most anti-personnel purposes. It's an awesome caliber though. No doubt.

      it's fantastic stuff. Energy dumps, fragments and all of that. Really drops a man. People act like 9mm is so good now days, but in all my testing it looks like the nose design makes the bullet enter like an FMJ, then slowly expand and not do that much damage. A .357 Mag fully expanding and fragmenting in half the depth is really where it's at.

      I never trusted the 125s as a deer load in .357. The are pretty fragile, which is exactly why they work so well as defensive rounds. I seriously don't think they were ever really intended for hunting game animals. I think heavier bullets with more controlled expansion are more suitable for hunting use.

      @@johnnorman7708 I understand where you are coming from. I've had good results on white tail. But, i'm really picky with shot placement and will turn down anything but a for sure broadside shot. They really drop one fast with a solid lung or heart shot. Cuts down on tracking.That being said, I've seen them blow up on shoulders, so yeah, they're frangible. I get out the hard casts or the soft points for hogs.

    • @johnnorman7708
      @johnnorman7708 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No wonder those 125s are working so well. Perfect placement. My jacketed bullet of choice in .357 is the XTP. A bit less prone to fragmenting than some of the others . Hard cast SWCs are pretty amazing as to how well they penetrate and take game. Killed 1 deer with a .38 special level load once. Broke a shoulder bone, perforated the heart, and bounced off the chest wall on the opposite side. About 25 yards away. Deer ran about 25 yards and piled up. That bullet was straight wheel weight out of a 150 grain Lee SWC mould. Charge was 4.5 gr of 231. It was my general purpose plinking and small game load at the time. Didn't plan on shooting a deer with it. Had mountain grouse in mind.

      For self defense, I say revolver + auto sans extra ammo. That's ~14-25 shots without reloading. I like a snubnose just because it's the quickest way to fend off an ambush, and it's ideal for shooting from inside a pocket or from an awkward position (like from inside your car) when the gun isn't properly braced, meaning scenarios where a slide could jam.

      Remington's 158 grain semi jacketed hollow point is an awesome round as well. Some of the most beautiful mushrooms that I have ever seen with about 16 inches of penetration. I have never used it with anything less than 4 inches of barrel though. I cannot say what the performance or recoil is like in a snubbie. It is rated at 1250 fps and very manageable out of a 4 inch revolver. It may not be the latest and greatest so it gets overlooked today, but, a lot of us old timers are still around because the old school stuff worked. It worked then and if the new generation of shooters today gave it a try, they would find that it would work for them too.

    This might be your best work yet. You pulled out and demonstrated all the key points to this load. I am not a fan of most stopping power theories or data streams. Yet there is virtually no argument that this old school 125gr Remington load is as close to magical in stopping power as you can get in a handgun. And while the 357 SIG is claimed to replicate the Remington load, it does not in both bullet and velocity (well... it may match velocity in a Buffalo Bore round but that's all). You also nailed the other key point. The darned load is super easy to shoot (in the outdoors anyway as it's magnum loud) and easy to shoot well. So add it all up and you get a super load that most anybody can shoot well. I am speaking specifically of the 4" barreled revolver. Street cred = Remington 125gr JHP 357 magnum.

    As Sam pointed out, velocity is a major player in terminal ballistics as is energy. When you increase these factors with bullets designed for the demands, you get greater effectiveness. Just compare a 150 gr 30-06 at 2900 FPS to a 158 gr 38 Special at 900 FPS. The 38 is actually slightly larger and heavier than the 30-06. The one significant difference is velocity which generates energy. If it can be applied effectively, more is better.

    Great review. That's the ammo my grandpa carried as a Special Deputy / Animal Control. If he had no Animal Control calls he would serve warrants, extraditions,etc. He put down a very large angus rabbid bull that broke down a fence and killed 2 of the horses in the neighbors field after ramming them many times. 1 shot. Done. Best ammo ever!

    Classic old school stuff that works. These or the Federals were my off duty carry ammo for years in my SP-101. Hard to beat. This load confounded the FBI in their tests. It often would not penetrate their 12c minimum, so it got a wounding value of "zero", which was cleay contradicted by actual street results. An additional benefit was a reduced likelihood of over-penetration. And we see the accuracy is quite good. I started my career with my 686, and i still love it. Last handgun i would ever sell.

    • @LuvBorderCollies
      @LuvBorderCollies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The FBI has zero and less credibility with me. I've been on more shooting scenes, working them start to finish, then testifying in court. That alone is more than the entire FBI does as an agency in a year or 5 years.
      The Border Patrol has more shootings a year than all Federal agencies combined. The BP says 10" of penetration is great plenty and they've been trying to get the FBI to change. But the Kings of Arrogance refuse to listen to the experienced people actually doing the work and getting dirty.
      So the FBI dismisses the BP actual shooting results and clings to their bogus BS of needing 12" min penetration blah, blah blah blah..!! What's truly truly sad is the so-called "ballistics experts" in the civilian world who cling to the FBI mantra like a distraught ex-boyfriend begging his wife/g-friend to not leave. Its really sickening to me to see this.
      But when you have guys who are general practice dentists masquerading as "ballistics experts". getting the zero experience shooters to believe them, its like trying to drain the swamp of irrelevant BS. Its these same bogus experts that vehemently attack people who do the hard work of collecting actual reports, interviews to bring the real true of the street to average Joe Shooter so he can make an informed decision on ammo. Those 'experts" aren't worth the effort to spit on.

    I am a Reloader of the 357.
    My "clone" of the Remington 125 JHP is the XTP 125gn bullet on top of 6.8 grains of Bullseye and 7.8 grains of Unique. I am using a Traditions G2 in 357. This is a single shot Break action with a 22 inch Barrel. a 3x9x40 scope on top.
    I load for 3 shots touching.
    Hit a groundhog at 85 yards with the Rem 125 round.
    The hit was just behind the shoulder, the critter kinda Blew Up, one half went one way and the back half went the other.
    I have this thing about Rifle and Revolver using the same ammo. What I Load for the rifle is a bit stiffer than for the Revolver, 4 inch SS 5 shot.
    For the 357 Magnum the word just has to be Vercility.
    All 38sp can be used, 110 - 125 grain JHP for Self Defence, 130 - 180 grain bullets will put food on the table. Pretty much any Gun Shop will have 357 ammo so it's pretty easy to get. Today 357 ammo is selling for $1.25 - $1,50 a round. My handload, 158 gn Hard Cast Semi Wadcutter, this is my Deer Load for my Rifle. works out to .29 cents, XTP bullet bumps the cost up .11 cents, still better than store bought.

    I regret that it's taken me so long to get to this video. .357 magnum is my favorite round, especially the Remington variety for all of the reasons that you pointed out. Since the striker-fired guns became the choice of most police departments, regardless of caliber, I don't think we will see much data on one-shot stops. They make firing multiple rounds just too easy and quick. We have all seen stories about officers who don't stop shooting when the criminal falls. We also see security films of civilians who continue to shoot as a robber is running away. Legal problems soon follow.

I always think that if you take both and place them on a table, unloaded, and given a box of shells, then told to load and put 5 shots on target, the revolver will always win. With a revolver you always know you have a limited number of rounds and will make shot placement a pressing priority. Liked your headshot from 50 yds out.

Perhaps the magic combination of softer lead, high velocity plus a small amount of fragmenting is the reason another old school round, the 115 grain 9BPLE, has such an awesome reputation as a man-stopper.

While it may not have sent fragments out in different directions outside the main wound channel the way this .357 Mag bullet did, that .45 Hydra-Shok expanded to a large diameter and went deep enough. Unfortunately, Federal tinkered with the load and the newer version of the Hydra-Shok has erratic performance. Sometimes expanding very well and other times failing to expand at all. I mean, I think it's a good caliber, but to be honest I can't say it's the best overall caliber simply due to felt recoil in snub nose guns. Now if we said .38/.357 as one caliber, than yes, because a good magnum in a full size gun and a good .38 in a snub is hard to beat.

Bright orange ring of flame in sunlight and it hit so hard the rust on the drum created secondary projectiles that peppered the paper from behind! It is a wonder to me how anyone can survive a shot from a round like that. For longer range I shot an old ceramic toilet bowl at 80 paces. It exploded. With my Ruger GP100 6" stainless + this load racoons & possums were almost ripped in half.

    Honestly, I was hoping to see the water hugs blow up. Overall great video. Thank you.

      Gun Sam has a video shooting the Remington HTP(same round, just nickel case) .357 where he shoots the water jugs. FYI.

    Nice shooting! I sight all my handguns in from a 50 yd bench. You performed better than I can from a bench @ 50 yds. BUT, I have old tired eyes now. BTW, Remington hollow points in 230 gr 45 acp are pretty wicked as well, even under 800 fps. My favorite factory rounds. Now I can reload better expansion ammo for the 45 with Lyman Devastator molds and 8-10 bhn lead. Talk about expansion!

    The debate about _'stopping power'_ ended with the 12GA shotgun! 🤣

      I prefer the 10 gauge if you can handle it.
