Paris, France 2004. Collins is 53 yrs old. The song was introduced in 1981. When you watch Genesis live, Phil often makes you think he will not make it to the mic or hit his fills in time. I think it is a little joke he likes to play, part of his subtle showmanship. His timing and pitch are incredibly spot-on all the time. He never misses a beat. Professional through and through.

It's crazy that he didn't really think he could sing early on. Yet he had one of the most distinct voices I've ever heard. And his pitch was incredible even into his 50s. Perfect relative pitch maybe?

@LouismarieBelanger Well he didn't later become a singer. He only became the lead singer. He's been singing, dancing and playing multiple instruments since he was a child.
Born and raised in west London, Collins began playing drums at age five. During the same period he attended drama school, which helped secure various roles as a child actor. His first major role was the Artful Dodger in the West End production of the musical Oliver!. As an accomplished professional actor by his early teens, he pivoted to pursue a music career, becoming the drummer for Genesis in 1970 at age 19.

It's become arguably Phil's best known and most loved song ever, thanks to its haunting lyrics and incredible drum solo, but did you know its history?
What a way to start! By 1978, he had been part of Genesis for nearly eight years, and had reluctantly accepted the role of frontman following Peter Gabriel's departure.
For the band's album 'And Then There Were Free', they had taken on a more mainstream sound, with songs such as 'Follow You Follow Me', with Phil's vocals at the forefront. He had been planning to do a solo album for some time by 1981.
Phil wrote the song during the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1980. The divorce contributed to his 1979 hiatus from Genesis, until the band regrouped in October of that year to record the album Duke.
All of the original songs on the Face Value album, including follow-up hit 'I Missed Again', were intended to be "messages" to his first wife, in an attempt to lure her back to him.
Phil said in 2016: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."
It spawned a spooky urban legend
The story goes that Phil watched as a man who once attacked his wife drowned. Another version was that Phil wrote the song about a man who watched another man drown, and sang it to him at a concert.
Yet another version claims that when Phil was a young boy, he witnessed a man drowning someone but was too far away to help. Later, he hired a private detective to find the man, sent him a free ticket to his concert, and premiered the song that night with the spotlight on the man the whole time.
Of course, none of these stories are true.
    How was the song made?
The song is known for its atmospheric production and rather macabre theme, and was thought to have been influenced by the likes of Brian Eno and his ex-bandmate Peter Gabriel.
It consists of a series of ominous chords, played by a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 over a drum machine pattern (the Roland CR-78 Disco-2 pattern), processed electric guitar and vocoded vocals. The song builds up until an explosive burst of drums releases the tension.
Phil improvised the lyrics during a songwriting session in the studio. He said: "I was just fooling around. I got these chords that I liked, so I turned the mic on and started singing. The lyrics you hear are what I wrote spontaneously. That frightens me a bit, but I'm quite proud of the fact that I sang 99.9% of those lyrics spontaneously."
How did he get that iconic drum sound?
Phil's use of the song's drum beat came via an unintended use of studio technology. His Solid State Logic 4000 mixing board had a "reverse talk-back" circuit. Normal "talkback" is a button that the mixing engineer presses in order to talk to the musicians. Whereas, reverse talkback is a button-operated circuit for the engineer to listen to musicians in the studio.
In order to compensate for sound level differences, this circuit has a compressor on it, which can minimize the differences between loud and soft sounds.
While recording 'Intruder' for Peter Gabriel's third album, Phil started playing the drums while the reverse talkback was activated. Engineer Hugh Padgham was impressed at the sound, and so they rewired the board so that the reverse talkback could be recorded more easily.
It originally didn't have a drum beat before the 'magic break'
The original single version of the song features extra drums that play underneath the song until the signature drum crash. These were added after it was suggested to do so by Atlantic Records chief Ahmet Ertegun.
Phil said: "Ahmet came down to the final mix in the cutting room in New York. The drums don't come in until the end but Ahmet didn't know that at this point, because on the demo the drums hadn't come in at all; it was only drum machine all the way
"And he was saying, 'Where's the down beat, where's the backbeat?'. I said, 'The drums come in in a minute.' 'Yeah, you know that and I know that, but the kids don't know that; you've got to put the drums on earlier.' So we added some drums to the mix and put it out as a single."

You didn’t know he was a drummer? He’s one of the best in the world 😀
I’ve been a huge fan of Phil’s and Genesis for years..
I wasn’t at this particular concert (Paris), but I did see him at Manchester and Glasgow during the same tour.
The concert started with Phil drumming.. on the drum kit on the stage. During in the Air Tonight, a the second set of drums appears as he walks up the stairs and towards them.
You’ll have noticed that he even stops halfway up the stairs and looks back… teasing us, with people wondering where he’s going “he’s not going to make it back down in time!”
Then of course, the second set of drums come up through the floor as he walks over (you can just about see them moving upwards in the video)
I’m not sure which venue it was, but during one concert of the tour, the drums failed to rise up. Phil jumped down into the hole and hit the drums as normal!
    What a performer!

The thing that really blew this song up was that it was used in a very popular show at the time, called Miami Vice.
The story arc was about to come to an end, so this song was used as s build up to the main shoot out event.
Miami Vice had a lot of big artists on their soundtrack list.
Another 90's type show that featured a lot of big artists of that time was called New York Undercover.
That show deserves it's flowers, but I digress.
This song is the perfect build up to an action packed scene.
Imagine that when that beat drops, someone in an action scene starts blasting...and then all hell breaks loose.
Yep. You can feel it and see it in your mind, right.

Phil was always a drummer and did back up vocals, but after lead vocalists quitting a lot they talked him into being the lead vocalist. You are right one of the hardest thinks to do is play drums and sing at the same time. He retired this year due to the years of drumming and him not being able to grip the sticks properly, and he was a perfectionist when he drummed, practicing 8-10 hours or more every day. His hands were so arthritic due to years of making music.

I've seen other reactors do this one so many times. It never gets old! The way he drives the beat is so amazing! It is extremely hard to sing and play drums. I have a goos friend who is a drummer and he sings too. He has always said it takes practice no matter how long you've done it. It is a lot of muscle memory.

    Phil was the original drummer for the group Genesis. After Peter Gabriel departed, Genesis tried to find a replacement vocalist. At each audition, Phil had to keep showing the vocalists how the various songs should be sung. After a fruitless search, the other band members suggested that Phil should take up position as the vocalist. While he still played drums on the studio albums, they needed to get another drummer to fill in for the live performances. One of the absolute best studio drummers in the world was asked and consented to become a member of the live Genesis experience. They also needed another guitarist to join them for the live performances as Mike Rutherford was playing both guitar and bass on the studio albums. Enter Daryl Steurmer, a phenomenal guitarist who has performed on some of Jon Luc Ponty's albums. The gentleman you saw on bass for this performance was Leland Sklar. He is reported to be the best studio bass player in the world by almost any musician who has had the pleasure to play music with him. I first saw Phil perform with Genesis back on the Abacab tour. I have been to four additional performances by Genesis. The first time I saw Phil play some of his solo material he was joined on stage by the Phoenix Horns of Earth Wind and Fire with Richard Thomas on keyboards. I enjoyed two additional tours that Phil did on with his solo material. If you are interested in seeing a live performance with Phil and Genesis I would recommend the live melody with the song "In the Cage". Here is the link to that;
    th-cam.com/video/_12_-jzqOlE/w-d-xo.html
It should be noted that the musical performance between Phil with Genesis and Phil doing his solo work are two very different beasts. There are so many great pieces of music that Genesis put out over the years that it is difficult to pick just one performance. i do think that this rendition of In the Cage is an excellent place to start.

Unfortunately I have never seen Phil Collins in concert. This is my favourite live video. I would recommend particularly the album No Jacket Required. It was knocked out of its #1 spot after several weeks by a Genesis album while he was still a member of the group. I don't think he ever officially left the group but stayed on as lead singer and drummer

Ignore the people saying to not stop a video that you are reacting to. If they want to see the video uninterrupted, they can go to the video directly. Watching your reactions is what this video is about. Stopping at whichever point you want is what this is about!

So from what I remember this is a personal message from Phil to a man that drowned his best friend when they were little boys. He wanted to meet the man and sing this revenge in my heart song to him.
I heard he invited the man to a concert to sing it to him ,but I'm not sure if that part is legend or true xx

You guys were asking about the members of the band... Most of them are pretty well-known. Phil and Chester do a drum solo battle in the middle of this Phil and Chester do a drum solo battle in this concert. I think it's actually how the concert opens. The bassist with the beard has been with Phil a long time but he is also done other work. The lead guitarist is world famous. Even his backup singers (not featured on this particular song) are pretty well known in the music industry.
Watch the whole concert and you'll get a real idea about Phil and these guys and what they're about. One of the best concerts I've ever seen from start to finish!

Please react to some more of the greats: Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Buffett (no one ever reacts to him and he has a cult following. His fans are called Parrotheads and followed him around the globe just to be at his concerts! Sadly, we lost him last year. Such a great human and artist!), Pink Floyd.....so many greats!!

I recommend "MaMa" (Live Concert Version) by Phil Collins with Genesis. There's a live version from Wembley I believe (older) and a newer version from 2007 Live Over Europe (Rome, I believe) A most unusual song by Genesis indeed... but very exciting to witness LIVE in concert...whether it's from the 80's 90's or the 2000's
