    Phil Collins' song "In the Air Tonight" is about the anger, despair, and frustration Collins felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980. Collins wrote the song in 1981 for his debut solo album, Face Value, and released it as the lead single. The song's dark lyrics and moody drums reflect Collins' emotions, but he has said that the song's content doesn't represent anything specific. In a 2016 interview, Collins said, "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration".

      I saw an interview with Phil and they asked him what the song was about. That's what he said it was. I remember growing up when this song first came out. The story at the time was Phil was watching a guy who just sat there while a guy was drowning and didn't help. Later at his concert he saw the guy in the front row and this was what the song was about. It wasn't, but you know how things go around.

    • @martinarscott3524
      @martinarscott3524 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That may be what he says publicly but I still have my doubts, they're very specific lyrics for a 'generalisation'....

    • @indycustommade3568
      @indycustommade3568 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@martinarscott3524 Why would he fabricate that kind of meaning? Just say it's what poped out of my head one evening. Why go into detail about a relationship if that's not what is was about. I read the lyrics again and what he said "its about the anger, despair, and frustration Collins felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980" sounds pretty legit to me. Drinking will do a lot with someone's psyche. I never wrote any songs but did do drugs in the '70s and had some wild stories. Just saying.

But their biggest success was after Peter Gabriel left with the album "Invisible Touch". I saw them on that tour and Phil Collins did a bit like the beginning of this video in that concert. It was cool. Also check out the video for Invisible Touch. It's cute. My favorite was/is Take Me Home. Love the song and the video. Not to be overlooked is the man with the long white beard, playing bass, looks like a wizard - Leland Sklar, another music legend, prolific, contributing to at least 2,600 albums by various artists . Leland has a YT channel worth checking out - he often plays his bass parts along with recorded music for which he was the bassist originally. He has talked about his bass guitars, some also legends with stories of their own. Lovely man, currently a member of The Immediate Family composed of members of the studio group The Section (1970's). I read about Phil and his skill and devotion to music. I knew he was popular of course. This specific clip though is one of the best live performances I can say I have ever watched. If anything this is worth study to understand exactly how to rile a crowd. And yeah. Divorce. His own. I think some of the lyrics are describing how he felt during all that, like "waited for this moment all my life". Obviously he did not wait since birth to part ways with this person. It was just such a raw thing that it felt that way.

    I have watched this performance so many times and I get goosebumps every time he starts playing the drums. Phil Collins was the drummer for the band Genesis, they formed in Charterhouse School, Surrey, England in 1967. Phil Collins joined the band in 1970 and when Peter Gabriel, the frontman left in 1975, Collins took over lead vocals. Yes, I've read that Collins wrote this song after he and his first wife Andrea Bertorelli divorced, and the singer was haunted by the emotions that came rolling in afterward.

    Phil Collins claims he has “no idea” what any of the words of "In The Air Tonight" mean. According to Phil; “Obviously, having my wife leave me, and losing my two little ones, there was anger, bitterness, and hurt. Those emotions are in the song, but in an abstract way. I have no idea what 'coming in the air tonight' means-apart from an impending darkness, possibly.”
    Without any initial preparation, Collins had recorded himself singing freestyle to pour out his intense feelings of distress and heartbreak following his divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli. After listening back to these ad-libbed vocals, Collins reportedly wrote the lyrics down on a piece of stationery belonging to the interior decorator he says his wife left him for. Virtually all of the lyrics he wrote down made the finished version of “In the Air Tonight".
    The song gained significant popularity after Phil Collins performed it on the British program "Top of the Pops", where he famously brought a can of paint and a brush to symbolise his ex-wife's relationship with the interior decorator. Bertorelli has since disputed this claim, insisting that Collins's "short fuse and preference for arguing" were the real reasons for the divorce. Either way, it was an acrimonious split, and that filters into the sound of “In the Air Tonight.”
    The opening lines of "In The Ait Tonight" resonate with longing and anticipation:
    I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
    And I’ve been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh lord
    Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
    I feel that these lines convey a sense of urgency and a longing for resolution, mirroring Collins’ own emotional journey.

He wrote this song as a kind of therapy from the whole emotional situation that he was going through at the time. Unfortunately Phil has had some physical health issues recently and he is not able to perform playing the drums but his son is a great drummer and he now plays father whenever he has a performance. Phil Collins has explained that "In the Air Tonight" was written during a particularly turbulent period in his life, specifically his divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli. He has stated that the song's lyrics are not based on any specific event or story but rather reflect his feelings of anger, frustration, and heartbreak at the time. Collins has emphasized that the song's mysterious and haunting lyrics came from his emotional state during the divorce rather than any literal experience or incident.

    “Against All Odds” (with Phil on piano) is on my top 10 ever list. I also love his “Call Me Al” video, featuring Chevy Chase. Comedic video with an awesome song. I laugh every time. ✌️❤️

    Thank you.i love your reactions to Queen and Freddie. I think you’d love You Take My Breath Away, live, Hyde Park, 1976. Freddie sings it before it was recorded while everyone else in the band was on break, just his piano and him. I absolutely fell in love with him even more so than ever before after seeing that. ❤

    I remember in the early days of social media, on either FB or MySpace, there was a woman in my feed whose posts were a repeated refrain of something like "I dislike Phil Collins, and his music is following me everywhere", and she would list the song name and the store whose background muzak system had played it that day while she was out and about. She has long since dropped off my radar, but for a while there in the 90's and early 00's Phil was positively ubiquitous...you COUDN'T get away from his music!

    Written by Phil Collins. Great 👍 When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, Phil Collins led Genesis to do more pop songs 🎵.
    While Phil Collins went solo, Mike Rutherford formed Mike and the Mechanics.
    Suggested videos 📹: 1 Phil Collins and Philip Bailey sing Easy Lover 2 Phil Collins sings Against All Odds 3 Genesis performs That's All. 4 Mike and the Mechanics perform All I Need Is a Miracle.

    I wasn’t at this concert but I did see him live and it was amazing! The build up for this song gave me goosebumps and then there was the explosion of the emotion, sound, lights….no words are adequate! Love Phil Collins and Genesis❣️I also love that you’re sharing your new-found appreciation for all this new (to you) music with others! Music unites us!

    Genesis and the BBC have been working together over the last few months on GENESIS: TOGETHER AND APART
    A feature length documentary on one of the most successful bands in rock history. From its first beginnings as a band of songwriters in the late 1960s to its final incarnation as a rock giant in the 1990s - via full-blown theatrical progressive rock in the mid-1970s and the subtler jazzy pop of the early 1980s - Genesis could perplex and enrage the die-hards, whilst exciting and exhilarating the newer disciples.
    Made with the full co-operation of Genesis, the film reunites all original members of the band together - Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford - for the first time since 1975.
    The film recounts an extraordinary musical story, exploring the band’s songwriting as well as emotional highs and lows, alongside previously unseen archive material and rare performance footage across their entire career.
    Transmission date to be confirmed

    "And I Think There's Another One From Mike And The Mechanics, But I Think I'm Wrong"
    Actually, Pegasus, you're totally spot-on. The one from Mike And The Mechanics is guitarist Mike Rutherford, who originally was the bassist of Genesis, and Peter Gabriel was the original lead vocalist of Genesis. After Peter Gabriel left, Phil took over on vocals, then guitarist Steve Hackett left, and Mike Rutherford split his time between playing guitar and bass
