My wife and I saw Phil in Toronto, Canada in 2007, Phil and the other drummer, Chester, did a 15 min. drum battle. One of the greatest concerts we've been to.
He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

You'd pull up to a red light and see the cars next to you doing the same, because they were listening to the same station. It was like it was required, like everyone singing Bohemian Rhapsody if it happened to come on the radio. Or air shredding Freebird during the solo. It became something like a religious rite; we all did it and we still do and pass it along to our kids, too.

I have been to a number of Phil Collins concerts, Peter Gabriel and Genesis, as well as Stones, AC/DC, Rush. They are all amazing! This one, I remember so well, and it still gives me chills. His drum solo/duets with Chester Thompson are amazing, the highlight of his concerts.
Phil Collins is HUGE! In the ‘80s he could easily fill any size stadium. He’s a massive talent & one of only a few (he may actually be the only person) to play Live Aid 1985 at both locations. He played in Philly & the flew to England to play drums for Led Zeppelin!!!
The intro just pulls you in. It's the simplicity of each note/sound change that' so effective. Every single part of this music is so basic, but the whole is so much greater than the sum of it's parts. I will be telling around about my age, 🤪 but I was blessed to be able to see the original group Genesis at Winterland in San Francisco. To me, Phil Collins has always been a focal point in his music and a good songwriter from the very jump along with being a high-tech kind of a guy, it’s so sad to see that he has to endure an illness that took him away from something that he loved so much his music. The thing is, he hadn't fully left Genesis when this came out. His output, creatively, in the 80's to the 90's is astounding. Abacab (G) came out in 1981, Face Value (P) as well. Hello, I Must be Going (P) was '82, Genesis (G) 1983. No Jacket Required (P) 1985, Invisible Touch (G) 1986, But Seriously (P) 1989, and We Can't Dance (G) 1991. After that Genesis was pretty much done, except for 1997's Calling All Stations whereas Phil's continued on into the 2000's. And the thing is again, that album streak isn't anything to laugh at. There are no fillers. Those albums are filled with hit after hit, excellent track after excellent track. Even if you don't react to them, you should listen to those albums. I guarantee they'll blow your mind.
*When all of his work is combined (solo stuff, Genesis work, producer work, collaborative/duet stuff) Collins spent more time in the Top 40 in the US in 1980s than any other artist. Phil is such a laid back, cheeky guy, and he's still got it after all this time, his voice is just so powerful. I heard the song was about the break up of one of his wife's or partners as heard he's been married a few times. Do you remember his song called " Mama" ? It's a song about a creepy guy obsessed with a prostitute but calls her "mama" ( that's what I heard it's about) He sings it SO strongly and powerfully it's mind blowing, then there's the creepy laugh he does in it too. True Story. At one of the stops on this international tour, the RISING Drum Set became stuck about 3 feet short of the Stage. And Phil had to jump down in the hole and perform his magic. In one his interviews, he described the incident.

Hello from France. 😊 I was there. It was at Paris Bercy in 2004. The dark was extraordinary. there had been a trio of drums, Phil Collins, his drummer and another who also played the djembe. It was phenomenal 😊
I actually got to see him perform this song live just before the pandemic started. He was getting older so his son was on the drums and it was still awesome. I have it up on Facebook.

Look into it further. He says in one video that it isn't about anything. He did write the song while going through his divorce. But that is about all it has to do with it. Phil said in 2016: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."

So it is borne out of emotions he felt during his divorce--I think his pain resonates in most of his Face Value album, if you've ever listened to it all. I think any one of us who have gone through similar pain can find the music in this and even still on his second solo album (Hello, I Must Be Going) resonates with feeling that pain.
We saw him in Houston many years ago. We took our 2 young daughters and they were converted and love Phil until this day. Happy you enjoyed it and were as moved as we were.

This is in my top 3 of all time fave live performances,what I wouldn't give to have been there in the audience! You can find that whole concert on youtube, it was pure magic. This was the song where everyone absolutely pounded out that drum beat in the car, driver included. You'd pull up to a red light and see the cars next to you doing the same, because they were listening to the same station. It was like it was required, like everyone singing Bohemian Rhapsody if it happened to come on the radio. Or air shredding Freebird during the solo. It became something like a religious rite; we all did it and we still do and pass it along to our kids, too.

Phil Collins was originally the drummer (and later the lead singer) for Progressive Rock turned Pop Rock band Genesis, going back all the way to his debut in the band in 1971. I'd definitely suggest reacting to some Genesis, specifically the early 70s songs but there are some later songs that are worth listening to!

Dang this one brings me back to my younger years.That drumming gives me goosebumps everytime. I love metal/ progressive rock, but I can appreciate Phil Collins and other genres as well. This song is about his divorce I believe. You all need to dive more into his solo work and his work with Genesis.
I always revisit the best years of Miami Vice when I hear this. This live version seems a bit embellished, tho.

I have been to a number of Phil Collins concerts, Peter Gabriel and Genesis, as well as Stones, AC/DC, Rush. They are all amazing! This one, I remember so well, and it still gives me chills. His drum solo/duets with Chester Thompson are amazing, the highlight of his concerts.

Phil Collins is HUGE! In the ‘80s he could easily fill any size stadium. He’s a massive talent & one of only a few (he may actually be the only person) to play Live Aid 1985 at both locations. He played in Philly & the flew to England to play drums for Led Zeppelin!!!
Other way, Live Aid in London, then Concorde to the States to play there.

Seriously this was one of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen so many. When this song starts the crowd always go nuts. I remember watching Miami Vice as a child and then riding in the lambo with the night sky and you can literally feel it. That moment. The best night of your life kinda moment and every time I play this song I always feel it. It's EPIC and ICONIC!

I will be telling around about my age, 🤪 but I was blessed to be able to see the original group Genesis at Winterland in San Francisco. To me, Phil Collins has always been a focal point in his music and a good songwriter from the very jump along with being a high-tech kind of a guy, it’s so sad to see that he has to endure an illness that took him away from something that he loved so much his music. The thing is, he hadn't fully left Genesis when this came out. His output, creatively, in the 80's to the 90's is astounding. Abacab (G) came out in 1981, Face Value (P) as well. Hello, I Must be Going (P) was '82, Genesis (G) 1983. No Jacket Required (P) 1985, Invisible Touch (G) 1986, But Seriously (P) 1989, and We Can't Dance (G) 1991. After that Genesis was pretty much done, except for 1997's Calling All Stations whereas Phil's continued on into the 2000's. And the thing is again, that album streak isn't anything to laugh at. There are no fillers. Those albums are filled with hit after hit, excellent track after excellent track. Even if you don't react to them, you should listen to those albums. I guarantee they'll blow your mind.
*When all of his work is combined (solo stuff, Genesis work, producer work, collaborative/duet stuff) Collins spent more time in the Top 40 in the US in 1980s than any other artist. With Genesis, he sold out four consecutive nights at the 80,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in July 1987 (which was a record at the time), while across 86/87 Genesis had five top 5 singles in the US charts from the Invisible Touch album, which is Beatles-eqsue. It's no exaggeration to say Genesis were the biggest band on the planet in 86/87.*

Phil is such a laid back, cheeky guy, and he's still got it after all this time, his voice is just so powerful. I heard the song was about the break up of one of his wife's or partners as heard he's been married a few times.
Do you remember his song called " Mama" ? It's a song about a creepy guy obsessed with a prostitute but calls her "mama" ( that's what I heard it's about)
He sings it SO strongly and powerfully it's mind blowing, then there's the creepy laugh he does in it too. It's great to watch it with the original video so you get the full impact. ☺️❤️👏

True Story. At one of the stops on this international tour, the RISING Drum Set became stuck about 3 feet short of the Stage. And Phil had to jump down in the hole and perform his magic. In one his interviews, he described the incident.

Seen Phil Collins solo and Genesis last year and even though he couldn't walk and his son done the drums, it was absolute perfection. One of the greats :)
As others have said this is about his divorce. Another epic drum-based one with a similar sentiment is "I Don't Care Anymore"--there are live versions, but even the studio version is pretty epic.
Look into it further. He says in one video that it isn't about anything. He did write the song while going through his divorce. But that is about all it has to do with it.
Phil said in 2016: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."
@@joejacobsen6822 Agreed---not literally "about his divorce", but rather written while going THROUGH his divorce. So it is borne out of emotions he felt during his divorce--I think his pain resonates in most of his Face Value album, if you've ever listened to it all. I think any one of us who have gone through similar pain can find the music in this and even still on his second solo album (Hello, I Must Be Going) resonates with feeling that pain.
Listen to the drums in I don't care anymore song and then go listen to in the air tonight. I think there's a close resemblance between the two
We saw him in Houston many years ago. We took our 2 young daughters and they were converted and love Phil until this day. Happy you enjoyed it and were as moved as we were.

Nothing to do with a drowning, it's an emotional allegory about the breakup of his marriage. This is in my top 3 of all time fave live performances,what I wouldn't give to have been there in the audience! You can find that whole concert on youtube, it was pure magic. I love how the audience starts to lose it when he's almost to the drums, knowing what's about to come!
This is actually a sister song to a track called "i dont care anymore" its not about someone who drowned. He wrote these during his divorce
