This song in particular he wrote it himself, and then went back to the studio and recorded the original by himself. recording each instrument piece one at a time until the whole thing was done. it's by far one of his most memorable songs he has ever done.

I'm neon fortunate to have been to a lot of concerts including his when he played in Tampa Florida in 1984-86. I can't remember much from back then because most of my days back then were in a blur. Bit I sure remember the concert. When started on the drums the whole crowd 1,000s of people got up and cheered. The guy next to me spilled his beer on me but I didn't care. Sadly he had to give up playing the drums because of back problems when he got older. Phil was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.

The song was actually about the breakup of his 1st marriage which ended in divorce, Phil admitted to this on a talk show, about the song, I think it was his inner self looking and talking at himself on what he did to his marriage, his inner self saying you did this you have only yourself to blame, ( and that lead guitars wailing and crying sound almost as if it were his wife saying “Help me, Please help me Phil”) his inner self saying to him, you saw this coming and yet you still did nothing to stop it happening and now you regret it, but it's too late now to say you are sorry she does not want to know, her love for you has gone and you are angry with yourself for letting this happen, or at least that's what I think he is trying to say or tell us, trying to express/explain to us how he feels about it, it’s brilliantly done but also very sad at the same time.
See I was a teenager in the late 80’s early 90’s and way back then we used to cruise town on the weekends and we listened to the the same 3 radio stations in the car and when this song came on you could hear it as a car was passing and everyone would tune into that station. You would see every person doing the air drums to the most epic drum break in history. Everyone I know still does it to this day. I still get chills. He is the definition of a legend 🤘🏻❤️🇺🇸🙏🤓
