Am I in the Twilight Zone?" that is absolutely priceless. I'm kind of in that sweet spot with Phil's music where I loved it as a kid as he was releasing it, but was also young enough to miss the divorce shenanigans.

This is rock and roll. Full stop. No fireworks, no dancers, no twerking. Pure talent. And, this is live. And the thing about rock and roll, the groups sound the same live, in concert, as they do on the records. Phil Collins is a master! And, he is a pretty nice guy, true rockers do not take the adulations that seriously. There is no rock anymore. times change, of course. But the genre has pretty much gone by the wayside. Not surprising, music does evolve. But, I like that younger gens are willing to listen to music outside their comfort zone, and finding out, hey! Old guys were pretty good!
I'm old enough to remember when live performances just didn't measure up to the studio versions. That started changing in the mid-70's in my personal opinion. Of course people went to live concerts anyway for the vibe as well.

I'm old and saw Phil live when he still played drums for Genesis and Peter Gabriel was lead singer....his energy level then was superb but even as the years passed he could still pull this performance out of the bag..classic!...So many amazing British music Legends..makes me proud ....lol
I was lucky enough to see him live when I was a kid…my dad took my brothers and I…still remember the light show involved….we were mesmerized and my dad got a night out ha ha

Every sound you hear in this song is calculated to perfection and intentional. Every note you hear is needed. A lot of modern music lacks the artistry it takes to create a legendary performance like this.
It's even got mad robot singing which is a thing that by rights should be awkward and lame but it's so perfect here that it's spine tingling and powerful and somehow full of rage and raw.
That performance is exceptional. All the parts are done in the best possible way for a live performance. The musicians Phil had onstage with him are top top class, they hit all of their marks flawlessly.
He is a legend! I don't know if anyone knows what it takes to drum and hold a note without a break in a note ( it's mind blowing) . He builds up the audience, holds them , keeps them there , and blows their minds with music that was beautiful.

The reason Phil Collins owns the stage like a boss is because he’s been on stages in the West End of London since he was a child. I’ve seen him live several times in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids MI. Once with Genesis, once with Robert Plant (he drummed for him) and a couple times solo.
The song tells the tale of the ending of a marriage. Tension builds, explodes, and abruptly ends. Very cleverly constructed as well as being a fantastic performance.

Quite simply, that is the MAGIC THAT PHIL BRINGS!! Phil Collins has been in entertainment since he was a kid (as a child actor, playing in West End plays like Oliver Twist. He was also an extra in the Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" film). He joined Genesis as drummer and background vocals in 1970 and became their lead singer/drummer in 1976. Phil's career has been nothing short of EPIC! He's one of my favorite drummers and Lead singers of all time!
His drumming in Brand X is also just amazing. Brand X was a Jazz fusion band. Here's an old recording from 1979. In Genesis, Collins was the second vocalist (with lead being Peter Gabriel) and backing vocalist. He mainly played drums and percussions, in studio and on stage. He was a master for the art of playing cymbals, like no other (which doesn't show in this creation), sometimes going for a whole song. And Genesis songs are often longer than 5 minutes. He also played keyboards, but not on stage. When Gabriel parted with the band, they searched for a vocalist who could take the place and do just as well. Not identically, of course, but in a manner that would keep Genesis' material all it's magnificence. After the band auditionned many singers, the keyboard player (Tony Banks, also guitar player for some tunes), and composer, suggested Collins could take the part... "After all, you know all of them, you've been singing with Peter, so why not ?". The story went on from this very moment. One problem remained : who would play drums during live performances of the band ? They were introduced to Chester Thompson, who played with Weather report, Frank Zappa, the Bee Gees, etc. and hired him immediately. He is the one you see and hear during this video, because he still is Collins' musician of choice as main or second drummer (depending on the song). And a drummer (Collins) knows how and why to choose a drummer (Thompson) ! Another master of music is Leland Sklar, "the man with the beard", who plays bass guitar like no other. He's been the number one choice in hundreds of songs, many of which you know for sure ! Then, let's not forget Daryl Stuermer on guitar. He's just the equivalent on this instrumer to what Thompson stands for on drums. And logically, a long time friend and fellow-traveller of Collins for decades. These guys don't need "beatmakers" or corporate guys to tell them how to sound or hold their gear or take a solo... they ARE the music, they ARE the beat, they ARE the melody. And Collins has such a career a whole week would not suffice to cover it all... just listen to Brand X, a band he co-created to express himself into jazz-rock-fusion. He also produced many records for other artists. An artist with everything you wish he would have, and so much more. PS : if you listen to Genesis, note there are many "periods" for this band, with and without Gabriel, then with and without Steve Hackett (have a listen at his guitar playing, you rarely hear that, as he knows how to bring classical and rock together in a strong yet delicate style of playing)... they sound very different, but with the same "cinematographic" and "theatrical" way of creating and performing.
Phil Collins best drummer ever! He is left handed using a right handed set. No one has ever been able to duplicate his sound. Now add in his vocals and creativity. Pure heaven!
He actually said he got his sound from tuning his drums just a titch sharp. And the snare is NOT out of tune nor out of sync in volume from the rest of his kit, a modern thing I hate: I’m a retired band teacher who finds that particular change grating.

This is why we went to see people live. It wasn't phoned in, it wasn't lip synced and there were no backing tracks. Quite frequently, a performance was the musician saying "if you liked my album, you haven't seen anything yet." Did I mention that tickets were actually affordable as well?

I believe he broke his neck in 2007 which caused severe nerve damage and multiple surgeries trying to correct it unsuccessfully.

And a drummer (Collins) knows how and why to choose a drummer (Thompson) !
Another master of music is Leland Sklar, "the man with the beard", who plays bass guitar like no other. He's been the number one choice in hundreds of songs, many of which you know for sure !
Then, let's not forget Daryl Stuermer on guitar. He's just the equivalent on this instrumer to what Thompson stands for on drums. And logically, a long time friend and fellow-traveller of Collins for decades.
These guys don't need "beatmakers" or corporate guys to tell them how to sound or hold their gear or take a solo... they ARE the music, they ARE the beat, they ARE the melody.
And Collins has such a career a whole week would not suffice to cover it all... just listen to Brand X, a band he co-created to express himself into jazz-rock-fusion. He also produced many records for other artists.
An artist with everything you wish he would have, and so much more.
PS : if you listen to Genesis, note there are many "periods" for this band, with and without Gabriel, then with and without Steve Hackett (have a listen at his guitar playing, you rarely hear that, as he knows how to bring classical and rock together in a strong yet delicate style of playing)... they sound very different, but with the same "cinematographic" and "theatrical" way of creating and performing.

Phil Collins best drummer ever! He is left handed using a right handed set. No one has ever been able to duplicate his sound. Now add in his vocals and creativity. Pure heaven!

He actually said he got his sound from tuning his drums just a titch sharp. And the snare is NOT out of tune nor out of sync in volume from the rest of his kit, a modern thing I hate: I’m a retired band teacher who finds that particular change grating.
Using a right-handed set? If that was the case, the hi-hats would be on Phil's left side, the floor tom on the right.
@@andriealinsangao613I think she might be confusing him with Ringo Starr who to this day uses a right handed kit. If you look closely, you can see that on the kit Phil uses, the tom is on the right.

This is why we went to see people live. It wasn't phoned in, it wasn't lip synced and there were no backing tracks. Quite frequently, a performance was the musician saying "if you liked my album, you haven't seen anything yet." Did I mention that tickets were actually affordable as well?
