What is Ashwaganda and How Do You Grow It

Ashwaganda is an Indian herb that is perennial in its native habitat, but that can be grown as an annual in colder climates. This video will show you how I am growing it in zone 6 in Utah.

Hi, do you have a video on the germination of the seeds as well?

I don't, but that would be a good video to do next year. I planted them this year just before a family tragedy, and then they got ignored for a couple of months and died. Hopefully the seeds I planted in ground outside last fall germinate. They did last year in June and got large enough to harvest by fall.

I have used this herb for a couple years after learning about it helping with sleep. It has so many other health benefits. I had never heard of growing it here in the USA, thought it was just India. Do you use the leaves or you mentioned the roots? Hope you do a follow up later on. Thanks

I am glad to hear that you use it with success too! I have not used the leaves before. I only have used the powdered roots. I will definitely do an update video. So far it doesn't seem that hard to grow here. It will be interesting to see if I can get a good harvest of roots only growing it as an annual.

I believe you're not supposed to eat the seeds/berries. They're fairly toxic and is used as a substitute for rennet in cheese making. Not sure you want that in your tummy.
Leaves, stems and roots. Those are the medicinal parts.

That is absolutely true. I harvested the seeds to save them and replant for next year. The part I used for teas was the roots. Thanks for making sure that is clear. No one should be eating the berries!

I was able to harvest, dry, and use it. I also saved seeds and grew 3 more plants that I will be planting out into the garden shortly! Ashwaganda is self sustainable here in Utah!

I have a several 2.5yr old ashwagandha plants. I over winter indoors. Why aren't they flowering? I have no issues growing them

@@motleydigger I am not sure. Are they outside now? Are they still in pots? Look at nutrients and the amount of sun they are getting. It could also be that it's just a little too early for your climate.
They need full sun and average amount of nutrients to flower. If they have too much nitrogen. That might force green growth rather than flowering.

Hey, are berries always red because have been seeing kind of the tree same husk but yellow berries.

The berries on Ashwaganda are always red. What you may have been seeing are groundcherries. The fruit looks the same, has a husk, but they are yellow.

Hi admi today i find aswsganda in the road and i collect the fruit still brown! Now i planning to plant this after 6 months.... Pls teach me how to preserve the seeds

That sounds exciting! I removed the seeds from the fruit, washed them off, and then dried them on a paper towel. I am keeping them in a cool location in a paper envelope. They should keep quite a while that way. I would love to hear an update on how it goes when you plant your seeds!
