    One tiny tip. If you only get one basil plant to grow(happened to me one year and seeds couldn't be found) I took a few cuttings and had them sitting in water for cooking with later in the week and it rooted. So now I pick my best plants and make cuttings to root and move around the garden.

    When harvesting basil, I have also found that cutting a full stem rather than pulling off individual leaves helps to keep the plant producing the soft and plump leaves. Otherwise the stem, with the rest of the young leaves at the top still on, just dies and the whole plant looks anemic or the remaining leaves will get dry and taste woody.

  • @IberianCraftsman

    Basil tips, i've noticed slugs come from everywhere to eat the basil so i grow it in containers that make it impossible for them to climb, for example adding baseline or chemicals(also smashed flowers they dont like the smell), and also i tried double side tape covered with grains of salt which is actually really effective(not a single one got up that night) but it wears of with watering quickly, so the most effective turns out to be a combination of an angle and vaseline, since its under a curve/angle the rain doesnt wash it away and the already fighting gravity slugs when they touch get lubbed and fall, also ants can't get to it (altough they dig).

    • @calebfuller4713
      @calebfuller4713 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The best way to get rid of slugs is containers of beer placed out in the garden. Anything from a bowl to the bottom of a plastic bottle with a few centimetres of beer in the bottom - it will attract MASSES of slugs which drown in the beer. Use the cheapest beer possible because the slugs are not fussy ;-) The best thing about this method is it actually kills the slugs, just as effectively as slug pellets, but cheaper and totally non-toxic to most other things.

    • @IberianCraftsman
      @IberianCraftsman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Caleb Fuller oh, thanks a lot i have some spoiled non alcoholic beer in the garage.
      by the way, any tricks for caterpillars? i just killed all of them (+-50) with a pair of scissors yesterday

    • @calebfuller4713
      @calebfuller4713 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@IberianCraftsman Not sure it works with non-alcoholic beer, but please let me know how it goes. My understanding is the alcohol is a fundamental part of the trap - the slugs literally get "dead drunk" - either from alcohol poisoning or they get so drunk they just slide into the beer and drown. Regardless, it really works!
      The best thing for caterpillars, if hand-removal becomes too much, is bacillus thuringiensis, AKA BT, Dipel, etc. It's a bacteria which, while harmless to most animals, gives insect larvae such as caterpillars a lethal stomach infection if they consume it. Totally effective against caterpillars, won't even harm a ladybug or mantis if it gets sprayed, and totally harmless to any birds which eat the dead caterpillars, or to humans.

    When my basil tries to go to seed I cut it down almost to a stump with almost no leaves on it and it regrows a whole new crop, I have found doing this technique that it will never go to seed and the leaves with stay super plump and healthy the whole time. This is especially useful if you need a bunch of basil all at once, for pesto, rather than it just as a spice.

    I used this planting method in South Africa and the Middle East with great success due to plenty of sun. In England though it didn’t work well. Seedling too close together, too much rain I had brown dots on the leaves from mildew - too much damp essentially. Now, in England I prick the seedling out and plant on in individual small pots to avoid fungus/mildew.

      I've just set up my first batch of stinging nettle liquid manure. What you do is, you take 1 kg of nettle on 10 ltr water. Some say you should mince the nettle a bit but I've just squashed it properly with my hands. That will break open the cell walls I guess. Use rain water if you can. Put the nettles in a bucket, squash them, add the water and then add a small cup of limestone pulver/aglime (that's supposed to suppress the scent of decomposition). Put a stone or something on top, so that all the nettles are submerged. Let it rot for about two weeks. Aerate/churn it every day. It's done when there are no more bubbles coming up while churning.

    It's really a good thing to see that you would rather wait for the seed than continuously propagate Basil. Most gardeners I watch prefer propagating Basil since it will be an endless stock for them. However, I think you will get more Basil out of waiting for the seeds AND it will be less work for you. Only will it give you a phase wherein your present Basil plants produce less aromatic leaves and you have to wait for the new seedlings to mature again.

    Pinon nuts are very expensive so I don't use them anymore in my pesto I have substituted almonds or pecans. I think pecans work the best because they're softer. I don't just use basil, I also use other herbs in my pesto, virgin olive oil and Spice. I do not add the cheese if I am freezing it. Lots of sites will tell you that you cannot freeze or can pesto but I have had great success freezing it and having it still be bright green after a year in the freezer. all you have to do is put it in a jar cover it with a little bit of olive oil and press plastic wrap down to the oil and then cap it. You can always add the cheese afterwards. I have also Frozen it with the cheese as well.

    Happy belated birthday! Basil is excellent for aging gracefully and improving the overall health of animal organisms. My dogs pick a few basil stems throughout the growing season and they are very vibrant. I eat a good amount of basil and I make a puree mask of basil for my face, neck and hands. Seems to keep my skin youthful.😊 Love the video.💚 Thank you for sharing!

      Yes, thyme can get like that. Sure, definitely on the cards. Cheers :)

      Our just died T- T Apparently they are a tad trickier to grow. We asked our local herb store why thyme was more expensive than the rest. Our tarragon, oregano, spanish thyme, and basil are doing ok though.

    basil is a must grow for me every year. it makes a great companion plant for tomatos grown in the green house. an extra bonus is the scent when you brush past it. ( not to mention how good it is in tomato dishes )...…………...brian

      Hey! No sad sad, here and there push some snow out creating ways for light and heat to melt the snow quicker. Not to mention, a nice refraction of light will help heat snow to melt!

      @@tkayshakur2500 Did you read the part about 4 FEET of snow? Winter isn't over for us here yet. 10 cm fell here today, so although I appreciate your optimism, that's not our current reality either. We've been shoveling the stuff for 5 months now, and there is nowhere left to put it, so at this point aside from keeping driveway and walkways cleared, we are going to wait for spring to give us a hand. :-)
