The best way to listen is back to back
Back in the day, this tune was a Master Class to learn several bass and lead guitar riffs and techniques. We wore the vinyl out, and we had to buy another copy!!!!
Love seeing your reaction to these two amazing songs and you validate that great music from over 50 years ago is still universally recognized as such by the younger generation. The riff from Heartbreaker has been described as one of the greatest in rock. LZ packs so much musical greatness in their album compared to so many other artists. There's still more to come on your journey.

Heartbreaker: Jimmy uses his 1959 Les Paul Standard on that opening riff. He doubles the guitar in production to give it more weight. The distortion is caused by the poor condition of amp. JPJ shadows Jimmy with his Jazz Bass. This track is considered one that helped usher in hard rock.

Hi HollisDuty, I never knew that about the amp causing the distortion. I thought it must have been a wizardly trick by Jimmy & Co. cos it just sounds so badass, lol. Also, was that the Les Paul that joe Walsh gave him? I know Walsh gave him one, and I don't think Page ever looked back, basically.
@@joescott8877 yes, that became his Number One. I have a great tome (very big book) named LED ZEPPELIN, All The Songs, The Story Behind Every Track. It has the most interesting information in it. Many quotes from the band members, engineers, manager, other musicians- highly recommend if you are a Led Head.

I have at least a dozen Zep books already, lol, why not make it a "Baker's," right? Are you familiar with "LZ: The Concert File," by Dave Lewis & Simon Pallett? Super detailed breakdown of all the live shows, complete with "Plantations," lol. THAT guy Lewis is one dedicated Led Head!

Funny story… when this album came out there was a major radio station that accidentally played both songs back to back because they realize when one ended and one started. Ever since it’s like an unwritten rule to play them together.

Heartbreaker has a great, heavy riff punctuated by the "doom-like" notes of Jonesy's bass. The brief guitar solo was done separately from the original track and added later. LLM is spry and saucy and I like it a lot.

Although all 4 of these musicians are elite masters, Bonzo's prominence in their sound grows and grows as you get further into the catalog. By the time you get to the 6th and 7th albums, Bonzo is virtually the lead instrument.
I can hear the growth already! He’s definitely having his moments on this album so far!
The next album is a complete departure ...very light in comparison. Much more acoustic. Great album, but make no assumptions. Just enjoy. Every album is completely different.
You should check out the UK Hall of Fame Awards 2006 You Tube to get a picture on how they influenced most of the bands of today.

Yeah, basically i think the transition was too fast for even the most skilled old-school radio DJ to pick up the needle from the record in time to avoid the first second(s) of LLM being heard, which would have been awkward, and professionally embarrassing. I think that's the deal, anyhow.
Yes that is how it probably turned out to be as those two being joined at the hip back in the days of the album being the focus on progressive FM Stations along with the fans who had the album ... LZ 2 was my break in to Zep and that sudden ending of Heartbreaker to LL Maid was just a perfect fit and it just seems normal to any one that knows LZep @@joescott8877
@@VIDSTORAGE Yeah, my brain is still trained to expect it, lol, and it DOES seem to be purposeful, maybe cos the one ends with Plant's voice and the other begins with just his voice, like it was a continuation...
Jimmy's riff sound was his 59 Les Paul run through a Fender Bassman amp turned up loud for natural distortion. Joe Perry of Aerosmith later used the same set up for the riff on Sweet Emotion.

I have to come back to say i just heard your comments on Bonzo and JPJ. We fans smile cos in the next song, a gentle rocker called "Ramble On," JPJ lays down one of THE sweetest bass lines. Also, listen for the "Lord of the rings" type lyrics, if u are a Tolkien fan at all, u will notice them. And u WILL notice Bonzo drumming in "Moby Dick, right after Ramble On.. All i'm gonna say, but it CAN easily be called a "Bonham song," lol.

Great reaction, man, I knew these twin bangers would F with your mind, lol! Everyone talks about the first guitar solo in Heartbreaker, but over the years I've come to enjoy the second solo even more. It's like it takes off, gets airborne, is so fluid, and then that distortion at the end b4 Robert comes back in is just so badass. The band didn't like the lyrics of the 2nd song much, and maybe thot the music too "poppy," but I think it rocks along just fine, especially Bonzo's kick drum going nuts! Finally, there's an interesting tale behind this album, google has it, but the short of it is Page & the band wanted it to sound BIG, so they produced it/cut it "extra HOT," which is audio language for stuff I don't have a clue about, lol. But it DID make it sound expansive, atmospheric, louder, better, etc. BUT: Many of the teenyboppers who were rushing out to buy it had these shit record players that couldn't handle the "hot" pressing of the record! A daughter of one of the record company's execs complained to her dad and said it was garbage. The exec saw a major crisis brewing, with word-of-mouth saying the new Zeppelin record sucks/sounds like shit, and so he ordered an emergency "stop the presses!" and they pressed it in a much wimpier-but-playable way. So folks who still have one of the rare original prints/pressings have a nice little bit of treasure! I suspect what you played has been revved back up to "hot,", what with remastering and all, heh.
Wooooow that is an incredible background story and i really appreciate you sharing that with me! that makes me want to go on ebay or google and try to find original pressed versions 😂 thats crazy man, the people who have the original’s now are so lucky.

I'm 58 and used to have a lot of albums, still have some. My bro and I need to research all our shit someday and see if we have any "hidden treasure"ourselves, lol.

@@ToMitoReacts1017 Agreed, and Here's the kicker: My grandparents, especially on our late Mom's side, had REALLY old records, like Victrola-era --the ones that were almost HALF AN INCH THICK, lol! After we lost our Dad several years ago, he took charge of the "going through everything" task, and I think he researched it and was disappointed to find they weren't really worth too much, due to bad condition, not Blues or other "collectable" music genres, etc. But I'm pretty sure he/we kept at least some of them anyhow.
When done with this album please watch whole lotta love from 1973MSG. It shows how the band varies their songs. Live verse studio are two different worlds. Keep it up! Thank You

I like both of these songs, especially "Heartbreaker". Since you enjoyed it so much, if you want to react to a live performance of "Heartbreaker" after you finish album 2, you should be able to find some video because they performed it a lot. The same can't be said of "Living Loving Maid" because they never performed it live. Next up is one of my favorites. Hope you enjoy it as well.

Aww YAY! it was my 1st fav as well until i heard ALL the rest & now they just ALL are heh oh tho it still makes me feel the exact same way today as it did back then always will that is one of the reasons i guess **Zep** is THE **Best** & **CrazyOtherworldlyMagical**
I agree with @jamr7631 and, in my opinion, the best live version is from Earls Court and there's a 8:12 version on YT.
Just a suggestion, you should react to the album version then the live version of each song of their discography in a back-to-back format. Mainly because Led Zeppelin’s live versions are a feast for the eyes and ears not to mention all the improvisation you’re missing out on! (I have tons of links/playlists). Also you don’t really have to worry about the copyright text on the official videos-that you’ve been using. To make up for not starting out with this format you can search for Royal Albert Hall 1970& go through the whole concert either all at once or one a day for two weeks-you will NOT regret it!! 😁
Actually, in my opinion, if you're going to start with live, go to the first which is Led Zeppelin: Live on TV BYEN/Danmarks Radio [Full Performance] (on YT). It's a half hour performance of some of the songs from the first album, then go to Royal Albert Hall.

My faves are RAH TSRTS(The Song Remains The Same )aka MSG 73 & EC Earls Court 5/24/75 for Kashmir and 5/25/75 for the encore of Whole Lotta Love(second only to WLL 73!), Black Dog, Heartbreaker, Communication Breakdown. I have playlists if you need hints 😁
What’s funny is the band hated Living Loving Maid, but fans love it, always been used to hearing both together. A few more great songs on this album, including Moby Dick, I still suggest the longer live version of that from Madison Square Gardens. Certain lives need seen & heard instead of the studio version. I personally love listening to studio versions first since its typically the version ill be listening to the most (in the car, headphones, ext.) but i will most definitely check out the live versions as well, thank you for the comment and support!

I so wish I had seen them in concert, to young at first, & no transportation or DL towards the end. I saw a lot of great bands as a teen, almost every weekend, just not my favorite.

LMAO😂! Actually, “spunk” is also used here in the States in lieu of semen, although not very commonly.
