    First off kudos for playing these two together, a big thumbs up. Anytime a radio station played Heartbreaker and didn't immediately follow it up with Living Loving Maid they were flooded with callers expressing their disappointment. So the radio stations always played them together. Back when this came out it was extremely progressive and has influenced countless bands that followed. I've always looked at them from a part I, part II kind of standpoint with the 2nd song being about a slightly older "heartbreaker" with the "mileage" starting to show but still living the life. I believe both songs were based off real people but I doubt the same person. I love the opening lines on the second song... "with a purple umbrella and a fifty cent hat... ...miss's cool rides out in her aged Cadillac..." and jpj's bass line is just Nasty!

      @JK_Clarke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@James_Loveless That happened often with fixed-length 8-tracks and cassettes. Rather than be true to the correct order of the songs, they would save two pennies worth of tape by filling up both sides with an equal time length of songs, which resulted in moving some songs around to accomplish the goal.

      I feel like there are definitely two kinds of zeppelin fans. There’s the gang that love everything from zeppelin IV onwards (they’re probably requesting Achilles last stand, the rain song, no quarter, the ocean, trampled under foot etc).
      And then there’s people like us who love everything from zeppelin I to IV especially - and we’re out there requesting since I’ve been loving you, bring it on home, the lemon song, what is and what should never be, tangerine, you shook me, I can’t quit you baby and good time bad times!
      And I think we both like it all - but whenever I see people asking for Achilles last stand or something, I’m always like “cool but how aren’t we going track by track through I & II first as a priority?”

      Michael, I stumbled onto something from the same period even more primal and raw.
      Find; Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, GTK live Mamma.
      Hard to believe they were that heavy that long ago, it is basic raw rock that evolves into complexity, 50+ years ago!Upon further research I read Plant and Page were fans of Thorpe and I can see why.

    JPJ's growling bass line on Heartbreaker is just nasty!

    • @Dustin2112
      @Dustin2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you mean the growl following the main riff, that's guitar and bass. Page is playing through the neck humbucker of a Les Paul with the tone rolled all the way down which helps produce that growl or guttural sound. He's always playing through a Tonebender fuzz pedal which adds that grit and drives the front end of the amp into breakup. The whole thing sounds very expressively bluesy.

    • @paulpetrick297
      @paulpetrick297 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RL-ww5evBeatles had more main stream appeal and recorded more songs thus they had bigger/more #1 hits, but that doesn't mean they were better musicians or had more talent than others. Plant can sing circles around Lennon and McCartney, Ringo Starr is an underrated drummer but he's no Bonham. George Harrison is also underrated and had a great, underrated solo career but most musicians of the time would put John Paul Jones talent above Harrison's.

    The second song "Living Loving Maid" was written about a famous groupie that hung out with the band in the early days, and dated Jimmy Page for a bit as well. Definitely an interesting story to read more about, I believe she was one of the types of groupies in the day that would hang around all the bands and try to worm her way into their lives, except Zeppelin got tired of her and this song was the result lol

    • @chrisb9577
      @chrisb9577 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Funny thing is Jimmy Page wrote the lyrics....and hated the song because of who it was about. He also hated the fact that people thought both songs were meant to be played back to back. Page said it was just a coincidence based on how the tracks were arranged on the album, with Heartbreaker ending abruptly and Livin Lovin Maid starting almost immediately after. They were never intended to be played that way.

    My buddy threw this record away because it was warped and wouldn't play on his "top of the line" turn table! So I grabbed it and took it to another friend's house and put it on his cheap record player and it played just fine! So every time I hitchhiked to his house (kids hitched rides in Alaska in the 70s) I would always put that warped Led Zeppelin ll album on!👍✌❤🤘

    The Heartbreaker riff is the ultimate rock guitar hook IMO. Jimmy Page is the all-time grandmaster of coming up with them. The solo was hugely influential because it was one of the first times a rock guitarist really went all-out. The band grew to hate the second song Living Loving Maid because it was supposedly written about a female hanger-on or groupie who was always around jabbering, irritating the band; I guess they felt sorry for publicly mocking her as they matured.

    Oh my God the memories of the '70's with Zeppelin rocking my life. I saw them live many times and they were just amazing. Sadly, this recording now sounds quite dated but you can't kill those memories. I know Brad's not really into guitar music but Jimmy Page was (and still is) a genius and Robert Plant with his lead vocals had a voice like no other. The late John Bonham on drums absolutely killing it as usual.

    Brad when it comes to listening to Zep, lyrics are secondary to the music, one will get the most out of their music if they separate the four members and listen to them individually and how they blend together with each other. Each are masters of their instruments and when combined they are legends.

    • @douglasfrantzen3011
      @douglasfrantzen3011 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, with so many of these songs from the old days, I'm just discovering some of the lyrics 50 years later while watching reaction videos. Some lyrics in songs really stand out obviously, but with a lot of the music it's just an overall listening experience. For me personally, I'm very guitar-centric when listening to rock songs, but obviously all the other instruments including the voice are necessary for the songs to be great.

  • @joesmith8725

    Like most hard rock bands and early metal, during the '70s and '80s, were heavily influenced from blues rock. Led Zeppelin was one of them that was heavy hard rock blues. They are also prog rock and folk rock as well. Zeppelin is very versatile.
    Yall know already by now, which is good!. Blues came from African Americans in the Deep South US, Mississippi Delta region many decades ago and spread throughout.

    In the Led Zeppelin catalog, there are several songs that are meant to be played back-to-back. On this album you have this pairing, and on LZ III there is the pairing of Friends/Celebration Day. Remember that Led Zeppelin is from the era of Pink Floyd, and many bands experimented with songs that connected either lyrically or musically. I have always thought that these two songs are mainly connected musically and didn't think of the second being a continuation of the same theme, story, or person as the subject of the first one (although as Brad points out, most of Led Zeppelin's lyrics are about woman troubles).
    I had never thought much about he lyrics of Living Loving Maid, but according to Lyrics Genius, Lex is on the nose. Reading through the lyrics it seems like the "Living Loving Maid" may be a divorcee who is collecting alimony (so perhaps she is the same woman from Heartbreaker earlier) and she may also be supplementing her income through prostitution, a notion reinforced by the lyric in the second verse that says, "when your conscience hits you, knock it back with pills." I've always been a fan of Led Zeppelin, but I've never done a deep dive of the origins of their songs; I'm sure there are many of your viewers that may have a deeper insight than mine.

    The second part was about a woman who bragged about having it all but was actually lived off alimony. . a purple umbrella & a 50 cent hat implied she shopped at thrift stores. The aged Cadillac was also a sign that money was tight. Living off other people got her a bad rep & people started demanding she pay her own way." better lay your money down" . My brother had this album & when he gave it to me I recorded the Living Loving Maid on cassette as its own song. Along with other Zeppelin tunes from various albums.
