The Mercedes-Benz EQC is the first pure-electric SUV from the brand, and it goes head-to-head with the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron. So is it good enough to take them on despite having a smaller battery and a fussy equipment list? Vicky Parrott has her say...

Drove the EQC 1886 AMG model this week on a test drive. Interior driving displays were clear and impressive. Rear leg room lower than I expected when front seats in driving position. Boot base is high (interior boot height of 650mm won't get a medium size dog inside). Feels a big car, with large roof pillars. Wife liked it. Easy and comfortable to drive. Plenty of power, and sure footed. Jaguar I-Pace and Audi E-tron test drives next.

I took one out for a test drive, sadly not a very long one, only about 40 minutes. Some town driving, some motorway, but no time for slinging it around country roads. What I really liked about it is that the drive feels very neutral. The Audi e-tron feels like a *very* big car, it was a bit like maneuvering a barge down a canal (an incredibly comfortable and well equipped barge, don't get me wrong - it's a beautiful car) but the Merc actually felt a bit more spartan; even though it isn't, not really. But you feel a tad more connected to the road. It feels smaller, and less floaty on the road than the e-tron I drove..
Here in NZ the basic Merc comes equipped with most all the goodies that you have to shell out for the advanced package on the Audi for; but no funky electronic mirrors (good!).
I don't like the dash as well as the Audi's, the screens seem a little smaller and harder to read for ageing eyes. And I sure can't put the reading glasses on while in traffic, to see how fast I'm going. But I understand there are different display modes. Also, there is an HUD, so ... and I am sure once we learn all the ins and outs of the car, we'll hardly need to actually look down. The controls, once you've taken in where everything is, are well laid out. It even takes note of the speed limit if you let it.
I left the default mode of the regen off for a short while to increase it and see how that feels, and I'm tempted to say it almost got a bit rude. Quite strong braking from the motors. I hurriedly went back to the default mode. I've heard it said that the economy actually improves with less regen and more coasting, and I'm willing to give it a go. The car certainly feels very natural and gentle in the default mode.
Sufficiently impressed that I put a deposit down ... even though I will have to wait 4 months for delivery.

Interesting to hear the comments about what's included, and what is not. Here in NZ it seems the 'base' model has pretty much all the bells and whistles included.
I certainly felt no need to go for the NZ$6000 extra accessory package. (Even with that, it is still cheaper than the entry level e-tron, by a cat's whisker)
Certainly I for one would, by the way, never hanker for the Android Auto app ... I tried to use it in the Hyundai Kona EV I drove for a year and found it to be dreadful and it messed up the car's radio and entertainment system. Spend extra money for those? No way. A car like the EQC or the e-tron do not need those apps, because they have everything on board already!

That all comes down on where you live and what youre daily routine/commute looks like. For the fast majority of the people who buy these suv's the range is more than they ever do on a single day working. For some they might spend a few minutes at a fast charger. In Europe We have Ionity and fastned who are pushing the charging networks. And are really usable altough Fastned is only in Germany, The Netherlands and are going to build chargers in Belgium.

Appreciate that you can only review the cars provided by the manufacturers, but it is frustrating that it is always the top end fully loaded model and so a lot of reviewed tech (such as the augmented reality) are only available on the AMG Line with the Premium pack...

Reviewing top-spec cars makes it easier to show our viewers the various options and option packs - allowing you to decide which are or aren't of interest to you. It's harder to decide whether augmented reality nav is a worthwhile extra without seeing it in action! Hope that helps.

Great test good comparison to other EV SUVs and yes your right when specked up £70k plus . Range 216 miles, not headline grabbing but realistic and usable in the UK (were just one big town really). I speak from experience 2014 Tesla Model S P85 85k UK miles, ok the supercharger network and its integration to the sat nav is unique at 100% 24/7 but the public charging is getting better.

On the way back, traffic was really heavy and 50mph was the max and no GP starts at all, it was hovering at 2.2miles, then the last bit into Swindon, is 10 miles of dual carriage way and it dropped to 2.0 @ 70, but crept upto 2.1miles when back in Swindon. Resolution, functionality, speed.... No frunk, ancient interior space usage, transmission tunnel!?! I’m a Benz fan, C63, G-class, SLS, epic motors. Is it wrong for me to expect more from the world’s most experienced car manufacturer? Not a Tesla troll, because I like the eNiro. Even considering to that one have alongside our Model S.

It looks absolutely great and even the wheels styled very tastefully. However I don't need towing SUV with city-only car range. I can envision lines of frustrated electric car owners in a near future waiting for their turn to charge while planning all their trip around charging stations and little 40 minutes stop overs . This car is not suitable for long range trips across the continent in EU or US. This is a commuter/shopping city car for rich people.

Is it? I'm going to bet that the Mercedes EQC manages to not shudder under mild acceleration due to any kind of a design defect in the CV joint. And its doors will probably work without distorting the body frame as the car ages. And it will actually have a luxury class interior. And Mercedes will be able to get parts for repairs in fewer than several weeks. And it won't score as the second-worse SUV in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' 2016-2018 report for loss due to fire in non-collision circumstances.

    • @Andy-zs3dm
      @Andy-zs3dm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@MichaelHalcrow Yes, some Tesla Model Xs have had defects. Just as some Mercedes vehicles have had. Mercedes used to have the worst reliability but they have improved some lately. Tesla is still a smaller brand so waiting for repairs might take longer than usual. But waiting for parts can happen with a Mercedes too. Tesla owners are usually crazy satisfied with their cars. The NAIC mentioning Tesla fires is stupid as anything. It's a few cars out of half a million that has had that problem. Just as common as with other cars. FUD at its finest.
The Mercedes looks to be a really good car. Nice that there's so many options for EVs now. The Model X is more expensive. If you can afford it it's a better option with better performance and superior range and charging network. The defect you're worried about isn't present in the new raven which has better suspension and a more effective front motor.

@@TheWitchfinderGenral The EQC is different. Many reviews have said the EQC is using better materials than the GLC and has tangibly better build quality where the items feel dense and solid. So don't judge this one based on the GLC. And yes I agree Merc needs to up their material and build quality in their newer cars. BMW and Audi is beating them hands down in this department. Actually the quality in the EQC blows them both away (not one part of this interior is the same as the GLC, this has a brand new interior), this has better range, is quieter, has the most tech. It’s only lacking on luggage space. Plus the interior on this is amazing, the attention to detail, the ambient lighting, the materials. The E tron just has two bulbous screens that are super hard to use. The Jags interior looks dated already plus is missing a lot of tech. It accelerates a little slower than the Jag but way faster than the E tron, which u need to have a boost mode for. It’s 5.5 seconds with boost mode (without it it’s about 6), that’s slow, that’s C300 territory. The EQC is doing 4.9 and Jag 4.5 and they don’t need a boost mode.

Material and layout is better than the model X.....then the journalist complains about the layout of the software menu. Yeah, another materialistic journalist. Not to burst your bubble, none of these cars in the industry are up to par with the Tesla. They can be as pretty as you want, but NONE of them can make the distance or have the charge infastructure. So the real question as a journalist should start the conversation with is what on earth are all the OEMs doing.....ANYONE can create a electric vehicle, but NO ONE OEM other than Tesla is creating a charge infastructure. Anyway, lost my interest in your video. I'm off to watch My little pony and sulk in the corner.

Drives like a whale around corners. Even though the batteries are low to the ground, the center of gravity is high.

Looks like another non-descript SUV. Plain, boring, over priced. Tesla Y blows it away

Sadly, it's not a pretty car... It's a bit bland but that seems to be Mercedes design now

I drove this car. It is overweight, overpriced GLC based conversion of fosil car. Trunk is suprisingly small for such big car. Interior space is small for its size as well. It drives very well, but you feel that it has 2,5 tons. For the same price you can have Tesla model S that looks better, has 50% more range, has much better acceleration, bigger trunk, better infotainment.
But I guess there will be some people who will like to buy overpriced SUV just because it is Mercedes.
I'm not Mercedes hater, I own B250e and I am happy with it. I just wouldn't buy this car if I had money for it.

People will buy overpriced SUVs because they're SUVs not even for the practicality. It's mind boggling

@@cortezforever If you have 90 000€, Tesla model S is best choice. If you have 50 000€, Tesla model 3 or VW ID 3 is best choice. That's my opinion.

They use parts of teh GLC it is not the same car. And from building perpective they take a good choice. They can build it on the same assembly line. Model S is indeed a great looking car but not a SUV. And yes SUV's are not great to look at, even the model X. But if people buy SUV's then buy ev's. E-tron/EQC/ I-pace etc. had a look around one and thought it was really decent internal space etc. Better as mine Ford focus station.

Or for close to the same price you can be a boss and get the Taycan

The presenter doesn't do it for me. Old jeans and striped t shirt is not enhancing the style of the car and she doesn't even wear make up. No class at all.
