Amazing job with these videos, this actually made me think about getting an EQC instead of an A250e (which I highly doubt it’ll happen because unfortunately it’s simply too expensive for me). You forget to mention with range (long journeys) that the number of rapid chargers being installed is vastly fewer in scale to the number of EVs behind produced each year. Currently this is not workable solution. Why would I want to wait 40 min or a few hours for others to finish charging when I can charge my petrol car in 2 minutes?
    Another thing that no one mentions, is that car insurance on electric vehicles is more expensive.

    Hi Nick,
    Please note that the charging power is expressed in kW and not in kWh!
    kWh is the amount of charge. The capacity of a battery is expressed in kWh. How fast it’s being charged is expressed in kW.
    For example: when you charge a battery with 7,2 kW power during 2 hours, the amount of charge transfers to the battery is 2h x 7,2kW = 14,4 kWh.

      Hi Mindaugas Zemaitis,
      Electric will be here in the UK in the year 2040...no car manufacturer will be able to sell a new petrol / diesel engine. It's a long way off yet and as you said it will change. The charge time might get faster but it is certainly useable for most people at the moment!

    "You'll wake up every day with it fully charged" - My understanding was that you're only supposed to charge it to 80% usually, and 100% when you need the extra range. Something about preserving battery life. I could easily be wrong though, I'm still a noob when it comes to EV's. Either way, good vid, thanks for making it.

    • @woodfordp
      @woodfordp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True but a100% is not a true 100% as the EQC car software keeps 5-10% back at either end of the charge so a 100% charge is only ever really 90% in reality!

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Monsta Munch,
      Yes you’re absolutely right, you can set this to do this in the car under the EQ menu. Showrooms like Mercedes-Benz of Poole do this to ensure maximum life expectancy of the batteries mainly because they don’t know when the car will be test driven next.
      For you and me charging to 100% over night is fine, but leaving it at 100% for extended periods of time wouldn’t do it that much good so it would a good idea to store the battery with a charge state less than this.
      I hope that answers your question!

    • @kitchendog
      @kitchendog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@npoleary I have the EQC and the manual recommands to set charge state max to 80% for daily use, and only use 100% when you are traveling far. Great video, but you mix up kW and kWh here and there.

      @@woodfordp Phil, respectfully this is incorrect. I double checked this after my post and Mercedes clearly state that you're better off just charging it to 80% as Nick has clarified. Yes, the software prevents the battery from being run out to 0% (it keeps 10%) but there is no limit at the other end.
      In any case it seems like a great car and a great step forward for Mercedes.

    Hey, i have the 2020 model eqc. And its the biggest mistake i ever made. For starters. The promised range was at 250 Miles. When i turnes on Ac it went down to 170 miles. And thats not during winter. During the winter season, it charged maximum to 92 miles💀 i thought it might be some problems with the battery so i took it to service at mercedes and they said there's no problem. 92 miles? I would seriously get that checked
      I have driven a Mercedes EQC, range is quoted up to around 250 miles but yes for EV’s that don’t have heat pumps, range will take a hit in the winter but it shouldn’t be that low.
      I would estimate that it would be around 160 - 170 under winter driving in most scenarios.

    Most important factor for range is ambient temperature. Much as I like this car (I'm almost certaintly going to buy one), there is no way you will get 200 miles range in winter. I took a Tesla 3 for 3 days in February (3-6 deg C) and got about 140 miles from a full charge.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you won't Richard you're absolutely right, if you're like me I'd have the heating on! 🥶

      @@npoleary I'm still waiting for one to become available for a 2-day test, but I might just order it anyway. I have a BMW 5 at the moment and borrowed a Tesla for 3 days earlier this year. I liked it a lot but it's just not as refined as the BMW's & Mercs. Above 40 MPH, the BMW 5 (with a diesel engine) is simply quieter than the Tesla, which is not particularly well-insulated. Range isn't important to me and I expect to use chargers away from home very rarely. Also, I appreciate the Tesla's minimalist design, but it's a tad Spartan, if I'm honest. Given all that, I think the Merc is the better choice for me.

    Hi Nick. Someone posted on the tube that Mercedes were giving the EQC an upgrade with immediate effect for its charging but didnt give much detail, wondering if you could find anything out.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I already know! 😉
      I was considering a video on it and I still might for the future but it’s basically an upgrade to the “On-Board Charger” for the Fast Charging also known as the AC Charging System.
      The AC charging system is now rated at 11 kW (previously 7kW) and the DC (rapid charging) rated at 110 kW like normal. So it basically means charging when using that connector will be slightly quicker and will shave a few hours off.
      Remember though, if you are considering one, there are new cars in stock in the UK pre built. This change will only affect cars going through the factory from Jan onwards.

    • @ianpollard6642

      @@npoleary Thanks for that Nick. My Prem Plus is being built now for an end of December delivery and was wondering when the poster said from immediate effect mine would be built in. Does that mean you would need an 11kW home charger instead of the normal 7.2 one.

      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe you’ll only ever be able to utilise 7kW in the home unless you spent a lot of money upgrading electrics on the whole house. I could be wrong though as my knowledge on that is very limited. Most charging companies I’ve seen only offer 7kW because of this.
      It’s been increased so that if you stumble across a charge point that only has the type 2 connector, it will be quicker.
      Hope that helps!

    I hear different opinion about how much one should charge the batteries. Some say if you stop at 80% they will last a lot longer if you always charge to 100% every time. Is there some truth in that?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi rgry,
      Yes there is, in a nutshell the less time any Lithium-ion spends at 100% the longer it lasts. Going to 100% is fine for daily use / every two days because obviously it’s there to be used but if you plan on going on holiday for a week or two, it’s best not to leave the battery plugged in at 100%.
      In this instance I would leave the battery below 80% and have it charged when I get back.

    • @npoleary

      Sadly no, you do need to plug electric cars in to charge them back up.
      There is however brake recuperation which captures a little bit of the power used and puts it back into the battery 🤓

As I have asked you before about wireless charging in my car not working. The thing is my son has iphone 11 and his phone charging in the car. Only iPhone 8’s and newer charge on wireless charging pads. iPhone 8 came out in 2017 which was the first iPhone which featured wireless charging so no unfortunately iPhone 7’s are not compatible as they were launched the year before.

      No worries! I do believe there are cases you can buy that will give your iPhone wireless charging. You plug your phone into the case and then you have it. Just bear in mind it will add extra bulk to your iPhone 7 Plus as it will be longer and a bit thicker due to the bigger sized case.

      Hi Alan, most electric cars and hybrids start charging automatically to get electricity into them ASAP but there isn’t anything like that on the car. That sort of functionality is primarily down to your charge point at home. Most new ones being installed at the moment are smart ones which have an app etc where you can do this.

      However in the UK E-Class’s without COMAND arrive like this. Basically there is a small SD card found in the back in plastic bag with the manual. Once inserted into the centre console (where your left elbow would rest when driving) then it will load up.
      Just double check the specification on your car, does it come with the SD Card Based Navigation?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey! Not sure I understand about programming it to recharge. An Electric car will charge when you plug it in just like a phone. For public charging you'll need to activate the chargepoint first and then plug in. If it's scheduling a charge, that is often done by the chargepoint and not the car. For example my chargepoint at home has smart capability that links with my tariff. The car would not know how to do this. Hope that helps!
      Google Translate:
      Hé! Je ne suis pas sûr de comprendre comment le programmer pour le recharger. Une voiture électrique se recharge lorsque vous la branchez, tout comme un téléphone. Pour la recharge publique, vous devrez d'abord activer la borne de recharge, puis la brancher. S'il s'agit de planifier une recharge, cela est souvent effectué par la borne de recharge et non par la voiture. Par exemple, ma borne de recharge à la maison dispose de fonctionnalités intelligentes liées à mon tarif. La voiture ne saurait pas faire ça. J'espère que cela pourra aider!

    Tesla already established a charging network esp. in North America including Canada where Im in. The only reason if im buying the EQC would be built quality of European cars! I hv model 3 but really, it drives like a honda civic ride quality but the price of a GLE!

    • @npoleary

      Absolutely right Eric! Tesla have a great charging network for road trips. There are many companies increasing the infrastructure day by day so only time will tell!

  • @renis.3774
    @renis.3774 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. I’m a happy EQC owner, but with the charging I’m disappointed specifically with the Charging Time configurable options.
    What I mean is that unfortunately the EQC is only able to charge immediately after plugging in (!!) and a charging based on a departure time, for example very useful at home, is not working. Even when configuring the Departure Time, the car start charging immediately.
    That’s double BAD because:
    1) not possible to optimize energy costs by charging during the low tariff during the night -> extra unnecessary costs
    2) when needed to charge to 100%, car reach 100% SOC much earlier than needed, i.e. remaining on 100% during several hours (even the all night or more) because charging starting immediately even if programmed to be fully charged on departure time 😢 -> higher battery degradation and less available range in the future
    Please investigate on this topic please. Mercedes hotline is trying to explain me that this is a correct behavior, even if it is obvious that is a BUG to me.
    Congrats for you videos!

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Renato,
      Glad you like videos! Thank you!
      The departure time is for setting your heating to come on at a certain time prior to leaving. Typically most charge points being installed now in homes are smart chargers which you can set at certain times to control when it provides power to the car etc that way you can take advantage of charging overnight etc.
      If you're concerned about SOC you can set a maximum charge limit which quite a few electric cars allow you to do. Mercedes-Benz showrooms set the SOC less than 70% to preserve the battery life while it's in showrooms or in storage. But yes you're absolutely right the less time it spends at 100% the longer it will last but this is fine for overnight charging. The EQC's 80kWh battery can take all night to get to 100% due to its large battery. It is recommended that if you know you're not needing to use all of your battery then set the maximum charge limit for less. That way it won't even reach 100%.

    • @renis.3774
      @renis.3774 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@npoleary Hi Nick. Many thanks for your answer. Although all other EVs give the possibility to program/influence the charging-time with “departure time” or with “charging starting time” -> it’s very disappointing that the EQC only charging option is “immediately” -> this create extra costs (during the day, the energy cost 30-40% more, example of Switzerland) because i want to plugin my car when i arrive home during the day and i don’t want to wake up at 2AM to plug in.
      For the same reason, when I really need to charge at 100% (i.e. in winter or because i have to travel on highway trip or family trip or many other reasons), I also want to plug in the day before -> but by so doing, the car will immediately charge until 100%.
      Your interpretation of the guideline is the same I received from Mercedes, but let me highlight one fact: Mercedes created two distinctive chapters: one for “Charging the battery at time of departure” and one for “Pre-entry climate control at departure time”.
      Additionally, in the chap. “Charging the battery at time of departure”, there is the additional selection “WITH or WITHOUT pre-climate the cabine” (!!) -> this means clearly that the original aims of the chap. “Charging the battery at time of departure” was NOT the pre-climate reason, but the reason which I assume it should be: changing the charging time of the battery, which unfortunately, it’s not working -> now Mercedes updated the wording in their Guides (from 04/2020 manual) by writing that it’s correct that the car start to charge immediately. This is clearly a trick in my opinion, because they know they have a bug in the functionality of “charging the battery at time of departure”. Again, if it would have been as Mercedes want us to believe, why simply not doing just the Chapter “pre-entry climate control at a given time”?
      In any case, you can agree or disagree with above arguments, but one FACT remain -> EQC can only charge immediately and no way to charge until departure time! -> and this is double bad (as explained above) and it’s a very stupid-charging-management, even compared with any other EV (even cheaper one can do it... including my wife’s BMW i3 from 2014... !)
      There are so many good reasons to charge the battery just in time for departure that even Mercedes should be able to understand 😔
      Best Regards

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Renato,
      I can’t speak on behalf of Mercedes-Benz for not offering this but as this is a first generation electric vehicle, I’d imagine Mercedes-Benz want to make Electric ownership as easy as possible and eliminate any barriers in relation to range & charging.
      I fully understand that off peak rates are amazing and greatly reduce running costs not to mention State of Charge benefits for batter longevity.
      Reading online there are reports of people who have set timers on their EV’s and then on a different day forgot to turn the timer function off and then found it hadn’t charged just before they needed it the most.
      I know Apple do this on the latest iOS Versions where it charges to 80% and then finishes off the remaining 20% just in time before you wake up so not sure what the future holds but I’m sure Mercedes-Benz are working on it!

    salespersons should stop lying about range!
    if you're concerned about range, get a passat diesel.
    "in real life conditions you always get 200 miles",
    hahahaha, in winter in city traffic you can count on 100 miles, rest is bonus, highway at anything above 100 km/h forget 200 miles, headwind, rain, cold, airco/heating, they all take their bite out of that illusionary 250 miles
    ...and on top of that, when's the last time you actually went down to a range of 10 km on your petrol car?
    deduct your own safety margin, too, and you end up with 100-150 miles and only on a good day with super-defensive driving, and a charging station right where you need it, you get 200-220 miles
    i love the car,and i know the limitations, but many people will be frustrated, annoyed, just be turned off after their first 2 weeks, if they fell for the range lie, and will never take electric again
