    I'd really enjoy both seeing you put a manual tip on a reed and also how you break it in.

    BRAVA! Thanks for the extremely useful and clearly presented information. I would like to have the videos of your break-in process as you bring a reed to performance level. Thanks also for the extra links for further study.

    It would be really cool to see a series of you breaking in the reeds! I'm going to try duplicating your process on 5 of my 10 pieces of cane (Vandoren GSP), and doing the process my teacher taught me on the other 5. I'm pretty new to reed making (second batch of cane so far), but it feels good to finally be completely self dependent on reeds now. I don't have any fancy breaking in process though, so if I try some other methods, it might help me find a way to make a consistently good reed 😜😑!

    Thanks for making all 3 reed making videos. I'm just learning how to do this with my teacher...so your videos really help me remember the process. Although my teacher has a tip clipper and tip profiler...I don't...so would love you to put some videos together on how to do this without those! BTW she showed me how to tie the thread without needed to use a slip knot at the end....I find this a little easier than the way you demonstrate.

    I am increasing the amount of reedmaking that I am doing, and I think I'm going to get some nitrile gloves so I don't get Duco on my fingers. It's never bothered me before, but I'm trying to be more careful as I get older. I think the Duco package recommends avoiding skin contact. Anyway, when I saw your pretty fingers smushing the Duco around the reed, I thought I'd mention it. Thanks for sharing so much great information!!

    I am experimenting with the variables of blade length versus insertion length on crook. Should the narrowest part of the blades (collar) meet the tip of the crook from the inside as, in effect, it does with an oboe reed? What benefit does having part of the extension of the bore as reed tube on the sound - if any?
    I know it affects tuning but what about tone and response? Thankyou for some great tips with these videos.

      Hi there! Hello to Venezuela- love that we are a global community here! Guys what?!? I did make a video on how I scape the tip of a reed in three easy steps- it's already posted. Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/c-Nl26YjH0c/w-d-xo.html
      The video does not take you through the full break in process. That is going to be a blog series that is coming up. Thanks for watching and motivating me to take you through the steps I do when breaking in a reed. Happy Bassoon-ing, to you!

    Wonderfully helpful videos - but I just fell over when I saw the price of the Reiger tip profiler. Can you show us your method for scraping with a knife and plaque? One more question - what are the benefits of cutting the collar on a piece of cane? I'm using some uncut Danzi cane at the moment and unsure to cut it or not.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Steph Hi! Great to hear from you. I like to put the collar in the reed to help with the response of the low notes. I find that without a clear edge at the back of the reed I am unable to get the response I need Down Low. I have colleagues that do not do this until the reed is broken in and close to dying. By doing it later they are able to revitalize the reed. It just depends on the music you're playing and your needs. :)

    Hi Eryn, thanks for the awesome videos!
    I’m starting to learn to make reeds, and I can’t find duco cement anywhere. I did some google research, and it sounds like it’s being discontinued. Do you know anything about it, or what some good alternatives might be?

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh V. Glad you’re finding my channel helpful. I pick up duco cement at the hardware store. Often craft stores will have it, too. If you get stuck you can always get a tube from a Double Reed vendor. Other options are beeswax- all natural! Or some bassoonists use hot glue! Happy Bassooning!

    Hey Eryn love your videos! I just wanted to offer a little trick my teacher taught me when making reeds. She said that if you put reeds in the refrigerator during the drying phase that it shrinks the cane to the drying pegs and controls humidity. Is this something you would do? I'm currently testing it but I wanted your thoughts on this. Thanks!

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @trailofundead

    Do you have any thoughts on clipping the corners of the reed tip? My bought reeds have a tiny nick out of each corner, and in my book they cut a good 1 mm off each corner as an option

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES! These are ears. Many reed makers add ears to make a rounded edge so that the corners do not accidentally catch and get torn off. I have reeds that I have added ears to and others that I have left. I find it doesn't make too much difference.

    • @trailofundead
      @trailofundead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aha! Thanks for the explanation. I think I'll leave mine unclipped for now and try not to drop them!

  • @ryanchoi7003
    @ryanchoi7003 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good vid!!!!
    BTW I don't use duco or any thing to prevent leaking because I don't have problem with it. I've seen Mr. Weisberg using sealing tape(that oboe player uses) above 3rd wire to make it seal tight.( If that helps :)
    I have feeling that more duco I put, It prevents freer vibration but that's just my preference.
    How do you handle the reaming of your reeds?
    In my case, I try to ream minimum as possible. I try to finish with the rieger diamont reamer but sometimes cane shrinks some more, I use spiral little as possible.
    Replacing wires before tip cutting is very good Idea because I tend to change sometime when I want to move the wire placement as well as the tightness.
    ( Good Tip!!!)
    I have experience of GSP cane with collar and without as well but my result always comes better without collar (Best w/ collar cane was barton cane so far)
    Could you tell me the difference by collar??
    Gustavo Nunez's tip for preventing cracking to blade was that have making collar like knife dip where the blade starts so that even when cracking happens, It stops on that dip.
    I think I'll order some of your reed soon because I'm really curious.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan Choi Hello! So Good to Hear from You! Good tip about the plumber's tape to seal a reed. I think I might try that- just to see how it works! So Cool!
      I don't reem my reeds. It's been a rare occasion where I have accidentally over-shrunk the tube that I would reem. But I have it down to a system of sealing the tube with just enough of the tube shrinking due to duco to seal the reed at the original lower second wire placement... I feel another video coming on.. as I write this.. that there should be a video just about this! ;)
      I agree with Gustavo Nunez and the collar! If I do get a crack it is usually a surface crack and I remove it when I put the collar in. I could do it before, too. But we are doing the SAME THING! Love That! A Tested Idea that works!
      What type of cane are you using? Just curious!

    • @ryanchoi7003
      @ryanchoi7003 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eryn Oft Wow
      Duco can stable the tube shrink I guess.
      My choice of cane is always best with Glotin cane.
      My teacher's main cane is also Glotin so I think I'm kind of used to the style of vibration I guess.
      I try to use cane various as possible but I think Gonzalez and Donati is the second best for me, 3rd choice would be Danzi, Rieger.
      Danzi and Rieger is very hard in my opinion that I think people of Germany style reed is best suitable but I don't feel flexibility that much from it. I keep some cane for just in case I need a hard cane for the rainy season.
      Gonzalez and Donati seems very quality cane but the rate of good reed is better with a glotin for me.

    • @erynoft

      Fantastic! My Glotin is drying on my reed desk as part of the cane trials- Right Now. Extra Excited to try it out Now!

    i have a question about the collar because when I first started making reeds like a few months ago when I did the collar it made a indent and I'm pretty sure its not supposed to be like that so any advice to fix that and to prevent that for happening and also is there anything you can use besides cotton twine to mummify because I don't have any on hand. the videos are also very helpful though I love them,

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gabe. I've used shoe leather to mummify the reed. And once when I was desperate a shoe lace. It was hard to get the tension right with a shoe lace, so do be careful. When putting in the collar try to run the razor blade parallel to the blade 1/4 inch before the collar. Then when you hit the collar lift up. If you are putting an indent in, your angle is too steep. It needs to run parallel so that it only lifts off high points. Decrease your angle and you will be set! Hope this helps! Please keep me posted on your progress. :)

    Have you ever made a reed that plays horribly flat like -30 flat without changing your reed making process? For some reason out of 10 reeds that I make somewhere between 4-6 will do that. Do you know why that would happen?

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      What type of cane are you using? And are you buying it gouged, shaped and profiled?

    • @jbroom86
      @jbroom86 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats the things... The cane I've been using I've had for at least 8 years (its a big box) I inherited it from an old teacher. So who knows how old is or what type of cane it is. It's gouged.

    • @jbroom86
      @jbroom86 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me add that some of the pieces of cane do say "France" on them.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeremiah Broom Without trying your reeds to know 100% for sure- it sounds like you have some of the cane that is harder (reeds that work) and cane that is too soft (reeds that play flat). This is EXACTLY what happened with the reeds that I am posting a Cane Review about this Sunday (and the cane I am Reviewing is from France, too.) Maybe the weather was bad that year and didn't create consistent growing conditions. It can been frustrating- and usually I move onto cane that has more consistent good results or discard pieces that I know to be variable. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching! And keep me posted if you try a different cane.

    • @jbroom86
      @jbroom86 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you measure the hardness of the cane without having a hardness tester?
