This is interesting! My teacher taught me to scrape the corners of the tip (ears) by twisting the knife on the corner as I scrape it so that it scrapes the upper rails (more vertical) and then more of the actual tip (more horizontal) I then do the crescent moon but more into the heart and such, and then blend it with a triangle diamond file.
Hi Eryn! Great video! It worked out very good for my reeds as well (Miller reserve and Danzi) after I used the tip profiler. I have a question, I am thinking about to get a tip profiler, (I've been using the reeds' n stuff one from a friend of mine). I would like to know your opinion on this matter or if you have a video that you can point out to me I will really appreciate it! Thank you!
Hi Eryn, I love your channel and all of the content you have been putting out! Do you have a video regarding reed adjustments? For example, I have some reeds that will drop drastically when I play an e. One of my teachers has told me to trim the length of the blade but it hasn't been successful for me.
Hi Shelby! Thanks for keeping up with my bassoon adventures. I am working on a video for reed adjustments. If trimming the blade of the reed hasn't helped I suggest checking the tension on the first wire, flexing the tip of the reed (I do have a video on this!) or waiting for the cane to age. Soft cane will be too flexible, if you can wait a couple of years this might be a great reed. The cane is too soft for now. Thank you for this video. I found it incredibly helpful and my reeds immediately responded better with a warm, less resistant tone in all registers. One question.... Do you approximate where the heart is or do you measure? Thanks again! I really enjoy your videos.
Hi Heidi! Thanks for watching. Glad you found it helpful. I do measure the heart and often times I color it with a pencil so that I am sure that I don't accidentally scrape the heart. If the pencil marks begin to disappear I know that I am over scraping. :)

I'm hoping you can advise me on a reed issue. Sometimes after working on a reed, the middle A won't speak properly. It sounds like the lower A and the middle A are speaking at the same time. I try flicking to get the middle A to resolve, which sometimes works right away, but it's a struggle. This problem has happened to the last couple of reeds I've tried to finish....What do I do to fix this problem? Thanks!

This is a tough one. Without seeing the reed, scraping technique and the match to bassoon and bocal I am not sure I can adequately answer your question. If you'd like to do a SKYPE reed lesson I could help more. But currently there are too many variables. Wish I could do more. :)
Hi Eryn, do you have a video on reworking the cane when it's formed but the sides (rails?) don't meet? I've had some cane slip when I was adjusting the wires and I'm not sure how to move them back into place. :)
+Steph I would say from my experience (because this has happened a lot in my reed making) that once formed... you could reform if they don't look like they line up right... but that rarely fixes it in my opinion. take caution when putting on wires.. I was taught at first to tug on the wires and make sure it is very tight... but then I was shown to only really get it about finger tight and DO NOT TUG AND TIGHTEN!!! I find when I do this I can ever so slightly twist one way or another and then causing the blades to slip or slightly overlap. I find that a minute slip, more so a mild overlap than a slip, that it actually helps with my high notes a lot... the only problem I have with that is my own OCD that i want it perfect perfect... but we are dealing with cane... it's a plant... it will never be perfect... the plight of all bassoonist!

What is the dimensions of your reeds blade? (Collar to tip) I'm just wanting to check so I can adjust my scraping accordingly to the dimensions I use.
HI there, Here is a link to a blog with my initial scrape measurements that I use for my Raffe Reeds. erynoft.com/2016/02/28/barton-cane-eryn-oft-style-cane/ I only go this light on Hard Cane. Softer cane will collapse and run flat with these measurements. Cheers!
Do you scrape with the Reed wet or dry?
I make sure the reed has soaked for 30 seconds so that I can insert the plaque without worrying about cracking the reed down the tip. From there I scrape as the reed dries out. Hope this helps! :)
what do you do if you don't have a micrometer I probably misspelled that
I use a combination of micrometer and light. But you could just try using only light. Hold the reed blades in front of a bright light. It will show darker spots that are heavier. Do be aware of hyper pigmentation that is not a heavier spot, just a cane pigment. That is the only danger. But a light will help you get started! Hope this helps!
Hi Eryn, if I draw on the patterns on the reed with a pencil semi-lightly, do I just scrape until the pencil marks are completely gone? (I don't have a micrometer to measure ;-;) Thanks in advance!
Great question. I draw on the reed, scrape off the markings, then play test the reed. Some cane is harder (will need more scraping) and some cane is softer (will need less scraping). By play testing you can be sure you will not over scrape. If the reed still feels resistant or lacks response- mark the reed again and scrape again. Even if you had a micrometer this is the process I would suggest!
