even the first notes are nice. Now... what to do if a store bought reed simply doesn't make any sound, especially in the upper register? I just won't resonate. My other problem is, that those who make some sound, sound like a bagpipe, absolutely not soft, not smooth bassoon sound.

Why don't you use a tip profiling machine? For a professional full time bassoon player it must take hours and hours preparing reeds by hand.
