  • Hi Guys! I buy a lot of Bassoon Goodies. It is only natural I don't Love All of Them. I take you through the items I've bought that broke quickly, were not what I expected or didn't live up to the hype.

    Hey Eryn! About your case, I think I have a great option for you. I would look into the Protec Bassoon case. There's one on Amazon for $150 and I'm extremely happy with it. I feel that it does have the same problem on leaning over as the kobyl case, but it's no big deal. The Bocal storage is a little strange, but it works. It has backback straps you can buy separately that are from the same company, so it works fantastically. The molding inside forms to your bassoon, and there is PLENTY of padding room your extra long long joint.

      +jordanxfarber You're the best! I've had a Protec Case when I first bought my bassoon and was told to upgrade due to the amount of travel that I do. I needed a heavy duty reinforced case which is probably why the case is SO Heavy. But I appreciate you thinking of me and taking the time to offer a solution. :) Big thanks!

    If you don't mind the taste of listerine, a product for reeds I absolutely have to recommend is the Reedjuvinate. I have one for alto sax and bassoon, and it works wonders. Keeps your reeds humidified in the chamber with listerine vapor, while also obviously disinfecting them and preventing mold and things from growing. The reeds are basically ready to play out of the chamber with no problems. They are a bit pricey though. I found the best deal for the bassoon Reedjuvinate on eBay, and the best deal for sax/clarinet on amazon.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't mind the taste of Listerine but it can destroy the fibers in a reed causing them to break down more quickly. I have also heard of MOLD happening in these reed cases regardless of the manufacturer's goals! Be careful.

    Haha I don’t play bassoon but I might in the near future I actually play double bass. With the wire if you want it to be smaller and more manageable, you could probably buy a plastic spool from office works or somewhere and just neatly wrap the wire around that yourself.

    Hi Eryn. When buying brass wire, be sure to get it soft tempered or annealed. I pre-cut 3" lengths for the 1st and 2nd wire and 4" lengths for the 3rd wire. I keep these cut lengths in capped plastic tubes. If you need to carry wire with you, cut lengths in plastic tubes take up hardly any space.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +NCF8710 Fantastic! May I ask- Where did you get the plastic tubes? Hardware Store? And yes- I do normally buy the soft brass wire. I think that is why I was so shocked that it wasn't soft wire from Charles Music. And it isn't noted on the website that it is not soft wire.

    • @NCF8710
      @NCF8710 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Eryn Oft I got the tubes from the lab where I work. These same plastic test tubes are available on Amazon and are pretty inexpensive. The 125mm tubes are good for the 3" and 4" wires. The 100mm tubes are good for the 3" wires which are the ones you are most likely to carry. You may also want to try looking at a crafts store for these tubes. Good luck!

      I use available anywhere and basically free drinking straws for similarly shaped items. Heat seal both ends with flame, and voila! safe and waterproof travel container. Heck, plastic coffee stirrers may be better for your purpose, as they are more rigid and your wire awg is surely not too thick.

    100% look at Wisemann cases! They have a plethora of cases and make each case individually. So I’m sure they could probably accommodate an extra long long joint!
    Best wishes, love the video!

    Eryn you should check with the manufacturer or the supplier that the brass wire is actually SOFT brass. I've had that problem with some cheaper suppliers, and the brass probably wasn't reannealed after it was formed.

    I've owned different Heckels over the years and sold many more, that is the first time I've seen or heard of a long joint being just slightly too long - it's a gorgeous instrument, I'm looking into a mid 12 again if I can sell my Yamaha and pool some other funds (will keep the older Heckel I have)

  • @marydoob
    @marydoob 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Eryn, nice videos, good info! Don't throw away the Charles wire, just cut it to the lengths you want and anneal it. You can place the wires on a brick in a heat resistant location, ( outside or kitchen), and heat the wire until it glows slightly, you can cool it in water. There may be some scale or pinking of the wire and it won't be pretty, but it will work better. If you need the wire to shine just clean the scale with 1000 grit sandpaper. I have done this with hard wire before and it always works. I use a small torch for cooking that I also use to heat my mandrel for reed making.

    I have a Kolbl case, it came with my Moosmann bassoon. I quite like it, but I can't comment on the backpack function since I almost don't use it that way. The case only falls in a V-shape when I remove the bassoon while there is a lot of music in the sheet music pocket. Unloading the sheet music pocket first is the simple solution. I don't feel the case can be blamed because the bassoon doesn't fit. I rather think it's the bassoon that causes the problem.

  • @gregfaris6959
    @gregfaris6959 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is the first I’ve ever heard of the slightly longer long joint. Very interesting. What number is your bassoon? Mine was 10488, and looks a lot like this in every way, but I never tried fitting it into a different case.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there- The serial number for my Heckel is 10717. It is presumably a Herzberg bassoon. Here's a link to more information th-cam.com/video/-mpX20fJbzk/w-d-xo.html in case you're curious.

    • @gregfaris6959
      @gregfaris6959 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice video - Thanks! My 10488 has a left-hand little-finger whisper key, and though I may not have ordered that if I had been buying it new, it does turn out to be very useful!
      Again, all these keywork options require care in assembling the instrument. Sometimes you just long for a good old 7000 series....

    I brought a Tom and WIll bassoon case. I've been really happy with that as it has back pack straps and is well padded. The only downside is that the pockets aren't that big so you may have to keep things in a bag instead of in the case

    Bona rulez! I got a Bam case that I wonder what were they THINKING?! I had to study the idea to get my bassoon back into it (was it this way? no.... was it that way? no... hey where is my wing joint?? oh under the other one... right...) on top of that it is big lump of "thing" and totally unpractical. I also got a case from ProTec that has no backpack function, but LOADS of room for knickknacks and an "added squishy bit" that i think can be easily removed to accommodate for a longer joint. But then the no backpack is a bit of a nono. so out the three i own: Bona rulez! it fits snuggly and there is still room to put the so much needed accessories. and hey! my airbook fits in the front pocket to. so handy.

    you can buy brass wire at hobby shops: perfect stuff, for instance 11 meter (0.6mm) for less than $2 (easily 4-8 times cheaper than specialised bassoon shops). I have several adresses in Europe where I buy it but I am sure the stuff is also available in the USA.

    • @erynoft

    Try Americase in Waxahatche (Sp) Tx. I had them build a custom travel case for my Contra a number of years ago and they were great to work with. They can give you a number of options of materials. I don't think they do "soft" cases. They can build a "Wiseman" like case that may suit your or a student's needs for compact design and durability.

    In case you're looking for a good magnetic reed water container, check out Hoboista in the UK. The magnets are secured with a plastic jacket wrapped around the cup. I've had mine since the summer and haven't had any issues, they seem pretty great. They're not always 100% water tight and the lid is pretty basic, but I've never had any serious leaking, just some drops if I didn't close it well.

    Hi Eryn, I accidentally bought copper 22 gauge wire instead of the standard brass... it took some getting use to (because I'm cheap and will absolutely use something I've bought), but I found that the copper is very light so it doesn't crush the tube or constrict the sound as much as brass. Just a heads up if you ever want to do a video on what different types of wire do for our sound and playing!

    • @NCF8710
      @NCF8710 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cory Jones Annealed brass (65/35) has a higher ultimate tensile strength (48K PSI vs 32K PSI) than annealed copper wire. It also has a greater elongation (60% vs 45%) than copper. This means that annealed brass can withstand more stress and will be less apt to break when twisted. Also, the brass can stretch more than copper before breaking. As a side note, brass is more corrosion resistant than copper. I don't know what the effect of using copper wire has on the sound of the reed. It would be interesting to perform a controlled experiment using copper wire.

    • @CoryJones-yc9ie
      @CoryJones-yc9ie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I do come across the issue of wires snapping if I pull too hard, the amount of time mine spend in action hasn't been long enough yet to let them corrode. They stay in place very nicely, and as I said, make it nearly impossible to crush the throat of a reed while forming.

    • @erynoft
      @erynoft  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cory Jones I've used Copper Wire in the past for an added fourth wire but never for the whole reed. This is a great idea to play around with, especially as it would not create a longterm unalterable change. Thanks for sharing.

      (I know what to respond to you) By nature or upbringing I am thrifty, some would say a cheapskate. But I do enjoy consuming (Bluetooth speakers I don't need, bubblebags, subwoofer for my organ that is really only for 6 or so notes...ones below 70 herz etc), but buying bassoon comfort items (stands, water cups, attachable tables for music stand etc)...I guess it's because I am lazy and don't want to lug them around. To prop up my horn during breaks or intermissions I place the bottom of the bassoon in the corner of my case and lean it against the back of my chair (dangerous, but in 25 years of doing this I have not been aware of any accidents), water receptical on the floor. One bassoon thing I'd like to buy but I don't really need is a Reed's and things pregouger. Don't know if you've seen them. Once you get the first one in you just turn the crank and keep feeding cane in and the cane comes out practically gouged. With 5 or 6 swipes on the gouging machine your done. Something like 1200 bucks. I have a '95 fox 601, a 2014 Yamaha (I bought in Japan) and a fox IV that I don't use. I am a bit of a hack bassoonist...a mercenary, and don't have a big job. I ran into your videos while looking for skype organ lessons. That's been my hobby these last few years. Playing with your feet is something else. I imagine trying to play a continuo part with my feet and the bassoon with my hands. Keep up the good work!
