Cool! Have you considered working on lowering your jaw while playing and increasing the air support. It can relax the jaw and shoulders AND darken your sound. 😊
+Eryn Oft To be honest, I've never had a bassoon teacher so it's been a lot of trail and error! Thank you for the advice though it's much appreciated and I can't wait to try it out! :)
Cool video! My old oboe case also does the weird strap thing and it annoys me sooo much bc I feel that my oboe is going to fall over at anytime. Honestly I would just undo the stitching and keep it in case you want to reattach it
Thank you for making this video! In my band, there is an option to switch instruments to the bassoon since we are only a first year band. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to switch, and I wanted to learn about the bassoon before I changed instruments. This was so informative! Now I have a much better understanding of the instrument. Thank you!
One thing i always keep in my case is one of those 3M Anti-Tarnish paper strips. They really do work extremely well! Essentially, they absorb the particles in the air that cause tarnishing of silver, nickel, etc.
My bassoon shipped in this case and it's a gentelmans cut version. The case has the same issue with the tipping over, and tomorrow I'm finally switching to the Bonna case. (They're virtually identical in size other than that the Bonna has an extra pocket and doesn't seem to have the tipping issue like you mentioned) I had an incident where the case popped my bell from the holders when the weight shifted and at that moment I decided I need to invest in a new case. Another bassoonist I know has this case and complained about the same thing AND that the styrofoam holders left weird smudges on the metal bands of the joints. My bassoon also has an added Eb mech and what I noticed was that my dealer, or fox, (idk who did it) kinda just stuffed my wing joint into the case indenting the styrofoam holder. I'm planning to do this on the Bonna case too but if it presents a problem I'll probably just take a knife and carve out a section where the Eb rod can sit unobstructed. Just my $0.02 :)
+Jeffrey Wasik I am so glad that you've shared your experience- I've been so scared about my bell escaping. And during Gig-Mas one of the backpack straps broke off (and the case is less than a year old.) The Koelbl case isn't as comfortable as my Bonna as a backpack, either. It looks like I am due for a custom case upgrade from Bonna- turns out I have one of the Magical 10,000 series Heckels that has an extra long Long Joint. This means it can't fit into most standard cases. I saw your pics on Insta and drooled... just the push I need to look into the upgrade. THANK YOU!
I have a Protec case that I use with my Lorée oboe, it has that same type of strap that would "V" when I took my oboe out. You can see about cutting the strap in the middle and having either velcro or a bra type connector put in by a seamstress. That way you can have the strap IF you want it and disconnect it when you DON'T want it.
I have the Koelbl case as well; my thoughts are that if you cut the support strap, you will put a fair amount of stress on the sliders of your zippers. I do have to agree with you though that the case tipping over backwards is kind of a nuisance! On recommendations for accessories to keep, I do recommend having some teflon tape just in case any of your corks come loose (not that your bell would need it); I actually did pick that up from Shane and have used it several times.
+Turbo Bitch Fantastic! I love the idea of the Teflon Tape, that's brilliant. One of my students came in with a bocal that is moving a bit- that would be a great temporary fix. THANK YOU! Ironically a colleague (who does not watch my videos) gave me a pair of giraffe scissors this week. I had a moment like- is this a sign?!? I will keep you posted if I have the gusto to follow through!
Cut the strap or undo the stitching and sew a piece of shock cord in between the two sections. It should allow the case to open more and not let them completely separate. I must admit, I have a Bonna case, and I have the same problem. I don't like it, but I have learned to live with it to the point that I don't really notice it anymore. For wire, I have an Altoids tin and I have pre-cut lengths of wire in there. That way, if you have to do sudden surgery on a reed, you don't have to take the time to unroll the wire, cut the proper length, re-roll the wire, then futz with your reed. Simply open the Altoids tin, grab one piece, close the tin, toss said tin into the rough vicinity of your bassoon case and you are ready to futz.
Four days ago, at the tender age of 49, I started on bassoon. And I'm never looking back. From my experience with the other woodwinds, the not-great sounds first produced were not a deterrent; muscle memory kicked in yesterday, and I'm able to play for longer stretches. I know better than to overdo it, I understand the embouchure will take a little time to develop, but I've already developed enough to decently play two octaves. Thank you for the video. I have more swabs than either bocals or reeds, but it's early. Also, I started with a medium-soft reed; should I switch to a soft reed at this point, for a better response, or stay with the current reed, for developing muscle strength? You're aces!
Congratulations on your bassoon adventures! It sounds like it is a perfect fit! I find that the word "Soft" in conjunction to reed making manufacturer can vary substantially. If you are able to blow with a big full amount of air and not bend on an E or C# then you have a reed match for you. If it is sinking (running flat when you use your full air stream) this might be a case for either a harder reed or a shorter reed. Let me know if you have any video suggestions. Welcome to our community!
I have band aids often used as silencers for my wedding ring. Usually keep Carmex and hand lotion in there too for dry rehearsal rooms. I definitely want a backpack case in the next year!
Brilliant using bandaids to silence your wedding ring. Do you wrap it the whole way around the finger or just the inside of the hand? And I, too, love a good hand cream!
I play multiple woodwind instruments, and I was supposed to learn bassoon over the summer, but the bassoon my band director lended me was TRASH. I know it’s exaggerative for how I’m referring to the bassoon he lent me, but multiple technicians said it would cost more than $1000 and I’m kinda disappointed/sad that I won’t get the opportunity to learn it. But this video was very interesting and hopefully in the future that bassoon will get fixed.
My old clarinet case had the strap thing. I was assembling my clarinet in a chair, and when I took out the lower joint it tipped of my lap and the bridge key broke. I would cut the strap, and you can stitch it together if you need to
Oooh! That's horrible. I switched cases after I heard a horror story of a bassoon friend taking pieces out and it launched his bell out of his case. Hope your clarinet is ok.
+Eryn Oft I still play clarinet, but I actually switched to bassoon in band a couple days ago. And I learned most of the notes off of the notes video you did. Thank you!

I have been playing for about 2 years at my Middle school. And I am finally buying a new bassoon, an Allora. I am not exactly new at playing the bassoon. But I am not what one might call experienced. Do you have any advice on finding the right bocal for my Fox Renard 51?
This is so exciting! Your own bassoon! If you are buying it new- it should come with two bocals. For the US they include a Fox 2 and a Fox 3. I would use the Fox 2. Let me know if you are buying it used and I will send along a few suggestions. Keep me posted on your new bassoon. :)
I think of contrabassoon as a great adventure. It offers different colors and textures. As long as the hands are large enough, you shouldn't have a problem.. Thanks for watching.
Eryn. Could you help me? I recently began playing the bassoon. I switched from clarinet which I have played for about three years. I asked my band director if I could borrow and learn a bassoon on the last day of school and he gave me the oldest, but best bassoon in our middle school. The problem is that this bassoon has a gentleman's cut (low B and Bb are connected to the bell, long joint is the same height as the wing joint) and the b natural pad doesn't cover the hole. I know it isn't a leak because the pad doesn't even get close to the hole. The pad moves only about two millimeters down. I don't really want to get it professionally repaired because it's not even mine and I will have to pay for it, not my school. I have thought of using key oil on my keys as it worked on my clarinet. Do you suggest that I use it?
Could you do a review on your puchner bassoon, I am an advanced high school player looking for a good bassoon to get, and I wanted to know if puchner is a good choice, and say the good and bad things about it please.
+Carlos Mendoza Let me see what I can do. With all bassoon brands- I've tried great ones and bad ones. All trees differ so do the bassoons. But Puchner is a solid brand on the whole. Just be sure to try several. I will see if I can put together a more in-depth video! Thanks for the suggestion.
I am in great need of a new reed case and I was wondering what brand or website you would recommend. I am looking for a sturdy case with good ventilation and it only needs to carry about 5 reeds.
Hey so this is sort of of topic, but I wanted to start reed making and am just wondering what age do you recommend reed making. I am a middle schooler oboist and understand if you can’t answer but I just wanted input for a double reed player
Hi there- I start all of my double reeds on reed making as soon as they are interested and financially able to buy the tools. It can take a bit of patience to learn a new art but it's so exciting to practice on something you made. I hope this helps. Happy Music Making!
I put my reed tool pouch on the inside of the case with the bassoon in the section next to the bell that weighs the case down while I am putting my bassoon together so the case doesn't flip on me....

I don't live in Oregon now. My work has taken me to Alabama where I work teaching bassoon at Jacksonville State University. You might try relaxing the shoulders and shifting the air speed to see if it helps with playing sharp issue. The balloons and bassoons video helps with air speed shifts and intonation!
