  • When it comes to top premium Bibles it’s no secret Schuyler and Cambridge are in the conversation. So I decided to take two of their most popular layouts and compare them. Which one is better? Let’s take a look together.

Thank you for this detailed comparison! I own the Topaz ESV in goatskin and it’s my favourite bible in my collection. I just love the quality of the materials, the design & layout, and the readability & typeface, it’s just fantastic. The Quentel is a great bible though, you really can’t go wrong with either.

I don’t own a Topaz, but three other Cambridge offerings. I have three Schuylers. My nod goes to Schuyler a little bit on the physical quality of the Bible. That said, I I would choose the Topaz, if I was buying today because of the layout: verse by verse, side column reference with some margin space, and awesome red letter. I don’t like the non-poetic setting of the Topaz though. While Cambridge has awesome maps, I think Schuyler has the best maps out there.
You can’t go wrong with either one. I think it comes down to personal preference of layout. 😊
    Fun video. Great comparison.

The Fullsize definitely seems like a darker print than the PSQ

Nice comparison. I'm not a verse-by-verse guy so I would go with the Schuyler plus the font is a touch too small for easy reading in the Cambridge. Since I rarely use a concordance I don't really care about the font, but if bible publishers are going to include one it should be readable. In that case I would have to give the nod to Cambridge due to their concordance font size.

THANK YOU!!! If you are going to put it in there make it worthwhile. If not, then leave it out!

Thank you for this! I really wanted to see these side by side!
In this modern world of Bible apps and websites, I just don’t see a need for a concordance in any Bible anymore. They certainly aren’t exhaustive. And they just make the Bible bigger than it needs to be. I would really love to see publishers do away with them altogether and give us slightly more manageable Bibles size-wise.
Cambridge does an amazing job with Red letter. But I always saw red letter as sort of a new believer’s beginner Bible. A new believer who maybe needs to find Jesus’ words a little easier. But two colored fonts in general are unnatural. No other books are published this way so I would love to see that fade away, or at least always give a black letter option. That is the ONLY thing that keeps me away from the topaz.

The Schuyler is the physically nicer of the 2 and has a larger font. That said I would still buy the Topaz due to the layout. I don't know of any other premium esv bible that has verse by verse and red letter. I do think the Topaz is overpriced for the quality compared to the Schuyler and Allan bibles. In the end though you have to go with what will make your reading experience better and that for me is the Topaz layout. If we were talking KJV bibles I would buy the Schuyler Canterbury all day every day over the Topaz because now you have basically comparable layouts so quality wins out and you get the larger font also.

Print goes to Topaz. Bells and whistles aren't why we should be buying Bibles, but I do like the Schuyler for reading more. I found the VbV almost annoying in any extended reading. I sold my Topaz.
