I love this topic. I came to the faith later in life and my first Bible was the KJV. Then following a recommendation of a friend, I tried the NIV. This opened the Transition flood gates, leading me to acquire numerous Bibles across the translation spectrum. My translation of choice is the CSB but often include other translations in my reading plan.

3:35 the NLT was approved by Catholic bishops in India. The ESV was approved in England and is going into use December 1 as their official Lectionary translation, replacing the Jerusalem Bible. Canadian Roman Catholics use the NRSV liturgically.

In my not-so-humble opinion, it is sad that any Catholic bishops' conference would approve the NLT or the ESV when they have the RSV2CE for liturgical purposes, and any of the Jerusalem bibles (1966, 1985, 2019?) for private reading. As a Catholic I have very little regard for either the much-ballyhooed NRSV in any form, or the NABRE.

I have my thought for thought bases covered I love the NLT and the NIV. I need a more word for word to read as well and since I agree with you that despite my admitted favoritism to the Critical Text I agree with you that I should add a more word for word translation and one from the TR I do think I’ll add the NKJV to my line up. I agree with you other things you mention. Stay away from cult bibles but Catholic translations are fine. Sorry for writing a long rambling comment to say “I agree with you, only I consider the NIV or the NLT as my main translation.”

  • @richardvoogd705

My go-to Bibles include NKJV, CSB, and NLT. I have others, including ESV, NET, and a handful from the RSV/NRSV/NRSVue family. An honourable mention goes to the Good News Bible, which was the translation of my first ever Bible, and NIV, which was my second Bible. Agreed that some translations and paraphrases require a degree of caution.

I don't mind reading any Bible translation that is: 1) translated from the original biblical languages; 2) translated by committee; 3) and translated by scholars with PhD's in relevant fields from accredited research universities. I find that the more intellectually/academically-based a translation is, the fewer theological biases there are. My personal favorites are the RSV2CE, ESV, NKJV, and NLT.

Hey Tim. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Your example of reading the Bible in different translations inspired me. I read through the CSB this year and am reading through the NRSV now. I modified professor Grant Horner's reading plan to make it easier. Perhaps someone will find this helpful: Pentateuch: 2 chapters/day Historical (Joshua to 2 Chronicles) 3 ch/day Wisdom (Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs) 1 ch/day Psalms: 2 ch/day Prophets: 3 ch/day Gospels: 1 ch/day Acts-Rev: 2 ch/day At that rate the entire bible could be read in 90 days.

I don’t see any issue with them with the apocrypha in it, however, I prefer it separated in the back or in the middle of the testaments. But, I’ve even got some Catholics with it dispersed into the Old Testament. The key is knowing what is what.

Interestingly, as I've been reading various books from the early centuries (such as the Life of St Anthony written by St Athenasius) you'll see lots of Scripture quoted, and there are quotes from the 73 book Bible. I used to be a 66 book guy, until looking further into the matter seeing that the Church didn't intend 66 books.
