      Thing is he does it because he's talking with Arthur's friends or acquaintances but in rd1 we don't see any of his friends the only guys that knew Arthur were guys like Dutch

    • @drcheesenut896
      @drcheesenut896 4 ปีที่แล้ว +945

      Well yeah, because he wants them to understand why he is the way he is. He even tells Mary-Beth that "I don't talk about him, but always think about him".

      When that happened when I was playing, I always thought John couldn’t help but wish to connect with an old friend about Arthur, to let it be known that Arthur died a good man. And I found it sad but also realistic that everyone else was in a hurry to leave, or to not really talk about it, because they moved on with their life. And the fact that John was the one who brought it up showed us that he didn’t move on like Arthur told him to.

    It's ironic that this game has amazing dialogue but sometimes conversations end in a very Bethesda way.

    • @clearmelody6252
      @clearmelody6252 4 ปีที่แล้ว +751

      Technically, you don't *have* to end it that way, you could just . . . not press the button again, when you know the conversation is probably over. Generally, they don't last much more than two or three lines of dialogue, per person, so it's not that hard.

    It’s wild, I remember I wanted this ending so bad at the end of red dead 1. Just an infinite end game living happily with John’s family on the farm. But instead John dies and I just never really loved jack the same way. I found him jarring, even the way he talks to his horse I found less intimate and it made me want John back.
    Then at the end of red dead 2 my wish finally came true but now all I can do is think about how much I miss Arthur. And the whole dream just kinda feels like a lie.

      Arthur and John's relationship may have been rocky at the start, what with John running off for a year, but you can tell that they're still brothers. And brothers have their ups and downs.

      I get they didn't have this story fleshed out when they made RDR1 so couldn't put Arthur into the game, but the story arc just feels really disconnected given how big a role Arthur plays in getting John to where he finds himself at the start of RDR1 and the actions he takes throughout that game.

    I always felt like John harboured some sort of survivors guilt when it came to Arthur. At the end of RDR2, it's clear that John begins to really look up to Arthur and is still trying to live up to his sacrifice in the epilogue. Keep in mind that John is found by Agent Ross entirely because of his revenge mission against Micah; a mission Arthur in his final days would have disagreed with. If I were John in RDR1, I don't think I'd be able to talk about Arthur either. John turning back to his old ways and hunting down his former gang members makes Arthur's sacrifice seem worthless. It doesn't matter if John didn't have a choice. It seemingly invalidates the sacrifice of someone that John believes was better than him. How do you emotionally confront that?

      @Kelly 22 That is exactly what I mean. Sure, it most certainly could just be people taking the piss, but this notion that John simply threw away everything Arthur gave him kind of grinds my gears, I'll admit. Everything he does, up until the final act of the game, is not of his own accord. He doesn't give a damn about his old "comrades", something he vocalizes several times throughout the first game. At that point, they are now between himself and his family, and those who dare to separate him from what he cherishes most tend to end up dead.
      Meme, or not, ignoring the gravity of John's circumstances is just waterbrained as fuck.

    Arthur passing might be the only thing John never got over, i mean, he saw Arthur slowly get worse and worse in health and never knew why, and Arthur was the only one of the gang he counted as an actual brother, he probably blamed himself for Arthur's death thinking if he stayed or he could've convinced to cone with him a little further he'd still be alive for awhile until he found out he had TB. Arthur possibly could've lived if they went another way, copperhead landing wasn't too far, or if Arthur instead of returning to camp went to get John's body because at the time he thought he was dead and he'd find John and they'd go there. But Arthur's death helping john was the best one for him. He knew what he did in his final moments were right and was at peace.

      It’s more than that. Remember Dutch took Arthur in at an early age and molded him to be an outlaw. That’s all he ever knew by the time we play as him. John had also grew up with hosea and dutch but remember he left for a period of time and got to experience something other than the outlaw life. By the time the Pinkertons were chasing them down, he knew his time was close even if his tuberculosis would never have shown itself. The pinkertons were gunning down the last of the outlaws left in the west. That’s why he tells John to get out of the life, to live for his son jack and Abigail. Because John had something to live for while all Arthur ever lived for, Dutch’s fantasy ideals, we’re all squashed when he saw how quick Dutch cast him aside.

    I would want a RDR1 remake more than a RDR3 or GTA6. It would be pretty time consuming, but I'm guessing it wouldn't take too long of a time considering most of the map for RDR1 is completed already. It would mostly be implementing old missions, which is probably easier than making new ones. And also, most importantly, changing the dialogue so Arthur is mentioned.

    • @JohnReedy07163
      @JohnReedy07163 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Arthur doesn't need to be mentioned, it would add literally nothing to the first game. Bill and Javier sided with Dutch and after 12 years, Arthur is long dead and has nothing to do with why they are doing anything. John is doing what he has to because he killed Micah who was working for the Government the whole time, and as seen in the post credits of RDR2, so was Dutch which is why the government wanted him dead for not saving Micah. Everything having to do with Arthur died with Micah. Everything in RDR1 had to do with why Dutch abandoned John after Chapter 4 in RDR2 and the Saint Denis bank robbery. That's what John means when he said Dutch left him for dead. After Saint Denis, everything John did for "Dutch's gang" he did to make sure he and Arthur could get out of the gang before Dutch destroyed it but they were too late.

      @@JohnReedy07163 I disagree that Arthur doesn't need to be mentioned at all. John left the gang and Dutch behind with Arthurs help that night and him chasing them down again would undoubtedly stir up old feelings about what happened. John not throwing what Dutch did to Arthur in his face is just strange. A conversation where John talks about what a piece of shit Dutch is for leaving him for dead having zero mention whatsoever of Arthur makes no sense.
      "You left me to die. The only reason I'm alive right now is because of Arthur.", or "Me and Arthur trusted you and Arthur lost his life because of it.", or whatever else dialogue.
      If they remake the game and that doesn't get mentioned, people are going to be very confused. That's the biggest reason people want a remake. So that Arthur and the other members of the gang can be added into the story to make it more connected to the original. I agree that it doesn't "need" to mention Arthur, but I honestly wouldn't buy it if it didn't. The older graphics don't bother me. And I mean, what other reason is there to remake Red Dead over any of their other games? Why not GTA 3, or Vice City, or GTA San Andreas, or Bully instead? Red Dead isn't going to do the numbers that GTA does no matter what. The biggest draw they have is that everyone fell in love with Arthur and want to see him mentioned in a remake. But if they don't do that I'm not sure how many people would really rather have a RDR1 Remake over a GTA San Andreas remake.

    I love that the dialogue system is more than basic, but it still gives you all the insight and either way, it remains in character

    The most logical reason of why John doesn’t wanna talk about him is grief. He probably felt like he could’ve saved Arthur if he didn’t run away but he decides to run away and now he regret his decision and felt like he could’ve done so much more for Arthur

    John is haunted somehow by the thoughts of leaving Arhur back, he wish he could save him or die together, even though Arthur talk him out of this. That's the tragic about John character, its like foreseeing the fate of him. Leaving Arthur back proves to him that he is no more than an outlaw, and in the end your past will always follow you.

    It's a smart way of trying to paint over the cracks of why Arthur wasn't mentioned in RDR 1 but it's made irrelevant when John is forced back into the life to hunt down his former gang...surely Arthur would be brought up more....obviously it's because Rockstar had no intention to make a sequel or a prequel and Arthur did not exist but going forward this is why i'll pretend he wasn't mentioned.
    That's the problem with doing prequels, the sequels end up feeling incomplete and bare bones when compared..

      You're right but this attempt by Rockstar is passable. John hardly sees or converses with Bill or Javier in RDR1 and one could assume that Dutch finds it even harder than John to speak of Arthur. Knowing that choosing not to side with Arthur was wrong in so many ways and knowing the suffering Arthur would have had to endure in his final moments was as much his fault as it was Micah's, he may have been too ashamed of what he had done to bring up the subject of Arthur with John.

      Actually they planned this game pretty soon after the first and the intentionally left John's backstory ambiguous with very little detail on purpose

    I've always thought that an amazing high honour ending would've been when Arthur is about to make his decision to help John at the end, he instead tells him about a plan he has had for the past few days and it goes like this:
    The first requirement is that he doesn't contract TB, but rather some kind of progressive motor deficiency illness or even progressive blindness. Each should serve as a good substitute for his altered view on life.
    Because he knows there's gonna be a huge stand off with law enforcement, he's gonna use the commotion to disappear. He already has Charles and Miss Grimshaw involved to help (she gets shot, but it didn't hamper his plan). He sends a letter to Mary telling her to wait for him at Rhodes train station every day at 12:00 pm for the next 3 days. If he doesn't show, she has to move on as he failed to escape and he tasks John with checkinjg to see that Mary doesn't continue waiting past the third day.
    Charles and Arthur then put their plan in motion and Charles comes back to the gang telling them that Arthur died in the crossfire.

      The Pinkertons only wanted Dutch. And what was their way to get to Dutch? Micah of course.... But John killed Micah and the only person on the country left that can find Dutch is John.
      In conclusion, if John followed Arthur's words of "Run and don't look back", Dutch would be dead because of Micah and Micah would be dead because of the Pinkertons. And after that they wouldn't give a shit about John. The same thing happened with Pearson and Tilly. They are still in the country but the Pinkertons never tried to find them, why? Because like I said 2 times, they only wanted Dutch.

    The greatest thing I've learned from RDR series is the "Alright, I'll leave it to you then" as a conversation finisher. It seems to work in both cheerful and gloomy conversations. Learning this is great for people like me who doesn't know how to end a conversation without making shit weird.
