Me. I'm Balling again, like a little child. From an iconic, incredibly classy woman to another. You can tell the depth of feeling. God bless you, Petula, for this moving tribute. I still feel sadness to this day but also joy in that I came of age during her time. I was blessed to be comforted and caressed by Karen's amazing voice. As we're millions of us. For all time.

The voice of an angel, so special and haunting. There is a purity in her singing which makes her in, my view, the best female pop singer ever. But there was always a hint of sadness in her voice, so poignant. She makes me cry too.

It's not as easy as it looks.
These stars have remoras that insulate them from their fans and the real world. I used to know people who, 50 years ago, noticed Karen's weight loss and wrote letters. The remoras made sure that she never saw them. Recently, I was part of a group of Carpenters fans who emailed Celine Dion after photos emerged of her in a skeletal state. She never saw them.
Sometimes, you just can't fix stupid.

The most tragic thing about her death was that she knew she was killing herself by not having a proper diet. I really felt badly for Richard's loss. I know they were very close as was I with my little sister. She was my life, I was her hero. We were rarely seen apart growing up. When she passed in February of 2020, she took half my heart with her and that is a part of me I will never get back.

I Have to Say that Ms Petula Clarke's introduction, then Her Reading the Word's that Ms Karen Carpenter. Had apparently Written Day's before? Were Heart Gripping and Gut wrenchingly So Sad that I Couldn't keep from Crying 😭😂 while listening. Being I'm a 1950s Generation Born Baby Myself. The Carpenter's we're a Group I was Really fond of, & listened to them for Year's prior to Karen's Tragic Death ☠️💀 & then I Continued to This Day to Listen any Chance I Can. Her Voice was just Incredible, indescribable, & Had a Quality that was One of A Kind & Only Karen's. Over the Year's of Her & Richard Performing Together, I'd Never Seen them Live in Concert or A Smaller Say Venue, of particular Choice. To Me Her Voice & Thier Music 🎵🎶🎵 was Like an Angels 😇😇 from On High. That had to of Decended From Heaven Above itself.
Those were My POV at least Over the Year's. Never Until a Few Years, before Her Passing was I Aware of Her Illness that, Eventually was Going to Take Her from Us All. What a Tragic Unnecessary Lose it Was Also. She was Way, Way to Young & Had so Much Life, STILL Ahead of Her. IT'S just So Sad, that I'm Still Confused from it All. Alas I Guess Some of Us just Aren't Meant to Last. So RIP Karen You Will Definitely be Missed. Thank You.

Her opening monologue is so touching and sincere, you FEEL every word coming out of her mouth is REAL.
Back then for inexplicable reasons, the Academy (Oscars) would invite other artists besides the original to sing the nominated song at the award show.
Today, it would be UNTHINKABLE other than the original artist to perform the song at the awards.
Karen, you are sooooo missed, your beautiful voice will continue to touch millions.
And to the Downtown Girl, thank you for your moving tribute.

??? This song had been recorded by a bunch of folks before either Karen or Petula recorded it. It was written for a 1970 film - Lovers and Other Strangers - by two Bread members. Larry Meredith (yes I had to look him up!) recorded it for the soundtrack. Countless folks have had a crack including Danny Hathaway. Karen put her unique stamp on it and had a hit. My fave version is still Petula Clarke's first released recording but the 'tribute to Karen' version here is beautiful.💓

The reason was that in 1971 only film stars were allowed to perform at the Oscars ,and Petula had starred in Finian’s Rainbow and Goodbye Mr Chips .This rule was changed for the 1972 Oscars and the Carpenters and other music stars were allowed to perform

    • @janew1720

@@alanpearson2797 You might not realize that the Carpenters had the hit in 1970. Petula sang it at the 1971 Academy Awards when the song was nominated from the movie you mentioned. Petula sang it in a tribute to Karen during her concert a few days after Karen passed in 1983. There may have been many other artists who sang it during those 13 years, but I’m not aware of any who recorded it before the Carpenters did.

Amazing how all the songs sung by Karen Carpenter, with all the unique arrangements by Richard Carpenter, are so timeless and sound as if they were made Only Yesterday. Very impressive and even Comforting.
Showbizz was tough in the 70' and 80's and revues could be very cruelly written, influencing a great artist Karen was, and the tragic story we all know sadly enough, happening in her and Richard's life.
Karen and Olivia now both are greatly missed.

Ats amazing how beautiful her voice is. She soared over all others ( when singers actually had a good voice) not like today when there are very very few singers that can sing, they are entertainers. For me she IS the best of the best. It sounds like she didn't even have to try ot just FLOWED. I say this as a 63 year old man that really likes music. I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but I can hear a beautiful voice from a mile away.
Karan is not gone, she is just singing for a different audience.
Everyone has their own issues and deal with them the way they think they should. I don't even dare to try and say what should and shouldn't have been done, I nor anyone else can judge, blame . Only Karan knows. I don't know why things happen. All I know is whenever I her her voice it brings me peace and I'm glad I'm lucky enough to such a beautiful voice.

The answer is far more complex than what you know. The short answer is that she wanted a home and a family and her parents and "inner circle" prevented both of them from having it. That leads into the parents' Depression-era work ethic that had them living on the road, playing as many dates as possible. They needed time for themselves.
What makes me such an expert? My parents were exactly like Harold and Agnes. My sister eloped to get away from the neverending control over her life. Karen ran off with Terry Ellis, and that failed spectacularly.

@@JustaGroovyGuy JustaGroovyGuy, thank you so much for myself and many others for sharing Petula Clark's beautiful and heartbreaking tribute to her cherished pal Karen Carpenter. The photos you chose and your inclusion of Karen's recording of For All We Know made this video even more unforgettable and searingly poignant.

This was a lovely tribute. As much as I loved Pet, with her many hits, my mind kept reaching out to hear Karen's iconic treatment of this classic song. It's a shame that her life was SO controlled -- first by her mother, then her brother (in other ways). I've spent a lifetime reading about, and following the life of Brian Wilson, another musical icon that was too easily "directed" by father Murry, bandmate Mike Love, and finally Dr. Landy. Fortunately he has largely freed himself from the "control" of so many others and continues to survive. Karen needed more than just a short-term "fix" from the NY doctor. She also needed (and DESERVED) support when she'd finished her Phil Ramone-produced personal record, and sadly, didn't get it from any of her California-based "family." [Similarly Brian didn't get Mikey's support for "Smile," either; it too was shelved, and he went into seclusion for a number of years.]

I suffered with the same thing she had. It took me a very long time to get over it. Then I went from not eating until ate until I was s sick and took laxatives to get rid of it. . I love Karen her voice was so beautiful. We lost a beautiful person. 💔 I wish she could have been able to beat her eating disorder.

I can't watch the whole thing. I had to stop at 2:48. How the hell people close to her couldn't see she needed help is just beyond me! I know Richard was battling drug demons of his own, but still, NO ONE? No one could see she was in free fall? No one? What a damn shame!

That's how it usually is. People either don't want to see, or they don't recognize what's going on right in front of them.

We know so much more today about treating bulimia and anorexia... things we didn't know to do when Karen was ill. I think her tragic death has likely saved a large number of people since then.

From what I have read, many people around Karen DID realise that she needed help and urged her to seek it, but anorexia is a cruel, complex and anything but easy condition to deal with: in fact Karen described it as something that "haunted" her.
